Superman: The Black Ring Vol. 2 ReviewSuperman the Black Ring volume 2 picks up right where the incredible first volume left off, Luthor at the mercy of Vandal Savage (seemingly) while in the middle of his quest to harness the power of the black spheres.Volume 2 is a bit slower paced and lacks the chemistry of the interactions Luthor has with the DCU's most notorious as he did in volume 1. The interactions felt stretched and lackluster at times. This collection does not suffer from it, however, it pales in comparison with the first volume. On it's own it's a very good story about a character in the DCU who deserves to be the spotlight of a storyline more often with a very satisfying conclusion. Some readers may be put off by a chapter that looks at two very unique confrontations Luthor has at a younger age, or at a "hairy" moment in his life. The interactions belittle what will be Luthor's first encounter with Superman (pick your origin: secret origin, birthright, man of steel, new 52, etc...) by taking away what sparked Luthor's jealousy of Superman. These "early" pre-Superman encounters make Luthor too powerful too soon. I felt so anyways. They are cool encounters, though.
A variety of artists lend their talents to this collection. Regular artist Pete Woods does the bulk of the work, to a satisfying degree. The covers by David Finch are amazing!
