The Rings of Destiny: Inside Soviet Russia from Lenin to Brezhnev ReviewThis book is a lot more interesting than Solzhenitsyn's books because it is a beautiful woman who wrote it. Therefore you get the sense of what it was like to be a woman in Russia during the purges and the terror campaigns. Hard enough to be a man, but to be a woman at this time really sucked.
Kuusinen's husband was a big red and friends with Stalin, but she ends up circulating in the gulags for over a decade.
Her survival and her day to day accounts including actual meetings with Stalin, are filled with precise feet on the ground explanation and detail.
The woman is Finnish so she gives a lot of what it was like to be Finnish and caught up with such a horrible bunch of loonies as were the reds in Russia. It was actually fun to read in spite of the horrible situations, the beatings, and the sexual humiliations.
