Like Engend'ring Like: Heredity and Animal Breeding in Early Modern England ReviewReading this book is like joining a seemingly cordial discussion, but as you listen more, you realize you are in the middle of a feud. The long-standing point of contention in this book is the importance of the contribution of the most well-known of animal breeders, Robert Bakewell. Although not addressed directly, there are jibes sprinkled throughout which suggest that Bakewell's contributions were over-rated, and these passages are peculiar, given the book's otherwise neutral, dissertation-like tone. However this quirk does not distract from the other information, which covers animal breeding (horse, cattle and sheep) in England from the earliest part of the written record, say 1500 or so, to the late 1700s. Several ideas of these early breeders were highlighted; first, they thought that imported animals would lose their special qualities after they became acclimatized to the local weather and soil, and so refreshing of stock from outside was viewed as important. Apparently there was no understanding that cross-breeding imported lines with existing ones would change the imported breed's genotype over time. The second idea is that animals were created by God, and were perfect at that time, and any ensuing problems were the result of deterioration due to imperfect human husbandry. This idea is in contrast to those of improvement of species to new summits through selective breeding, an idea which emerged toward the end of the 1700s.
