The Ring and the Cross ReviewIn The Ring and the Cross, Barbara Rogers tells the tale of the sixth century love story between King Sigibert of Austrasia and his Queen Brunhild, a story later taken up in the thirteenth century epic of Siegfried and Brunhilde in the legend of the ring, The Niebelungenlied. Thanks to Rogers, I now understand why the original story was carried as epic mythology! It was Rogers' choice of bringing out the other significant love story of the time, that of Thuringian princess Radegund and poet-adventurer priest Venantius Fortunatus--the unforgettable gentle exemplars of a better age to come--that provided the necessary contrast to the dark and murderous nature of sixth century France. On the other hand, true to this period, many of the historical figures in Rogers' novel offer the more common examples of the age--aggression, ambition, treachery, jealousy and revenge, whose expression delivered despair and destruction (vis a vis the Queen Fredegunds of this world). This was a brutal time when the Roman Empire had just collapsed and the Christian Middle Ages was just being birthed.
I discovered Rogers has had a lifelong fascination with this period in the Middle Ages, and in particular with the circle of characters whose lives move upon these pages. Her passion for this story over many decades brought her to write scholarly papers on the subject, as well as some of the most highly acclaimed translations from the Latin of Fortunatus' original poetry. Some of these translations are found in the novel. We can rest easy in her company, knowing we will not be misled about the history.
I have always enjoyed well written historical biographies. And over the years, Mary Renault has been one of my constant favorites. So it is with the highest praise that I say, Mary Renault, you have another member of your circle! Welcome Barbara Rogers to your small group of exceptional historical writing kin who truly transport us through time, entertain, fascinate, and move us, as they make it possible for us to enter the chambers of the past. The Ring and the Cross Overview
