The Wishing-Ring (Judaic Traditions in Literature, Music, and Art) ReviewBeing a Jew has never been easy, certainly not in the 19th century Pale of Settlement. Mendele Moykher Sforim wrote with love, and bitterness, about the harsh conditions of Jewish life at the time. It is a testament to Michael Wex's sensitivity and skill as a translator that he brings Mendele's tone to life in the most enjoyable way. As a reader of Yiddish in translation, I have been disappointed many times by wooden or lifeless translations of this incredibly juicy language. Reading the Wishing Ring was truly a mekhaye. (a pleasure)
Mendele/Abramovitsch is surely smiling upon this wonderful new translation of an essential Jewish classic. The Wishing-Ring (Judaic Traditions in Literature, Music, and Art) Overview
