Tree Rings: Basics and Applications of Dendrochronology ReviewThe publication date of the book is, in fact, 1988 rather than 2007. So the book is considerably less recent than it appears.
The physical aspects of the book are inferior -- it is actually a photocopy (albeit a good one) of the original. None of the figures is reproduced in color, which seems to be an issue mainly for the photographs. In addition, the glue of the binding falls apart after only light use.
Having said that, the content of the book seems appropriate, if somewhat shallow. The user is sometimes left wanting much more, i.e., the author makes blanket statements that are logical, but he fails to support them or develop them further.
As to illustrations, these are really the heart of the book. In several chapters, the space alloted to figures exceeds the space for text. It seems as if the figures are driving the text rather than supporting it.
All in all, the book should be interesting to professionals, but it's neither current, nor detailed, nor well made. As for amateurs, it provides a quick overview of the complexities of the field, and thus serves as an introduction to the subject.
