Ring of Power: The Abandoned Child, the Authoritarian Father, and the Disempowered Feminine : A Jungian Understanding of Wagner's Ring Cycle ReviewBolen's "Ring of Power" is exactly what it claims to be, a Jungian (psychological) understanding of the Ring cycle. She systematically moves through each of Wagner's 4 operas, first outlining, very briefly, her goals, the opera's respective plot, and finally a character analysis.
This is NOT an in-depth study. Bolen spends very little time on each section, and while her systematic approach allows for relationship comparison and analysis, there is little mention of the context in which these works were written. Her sole concern is with Wagner's treatment of these relationships, though it is curious that she essentially ignores his own philosophical viewpoint which led to his interpretation of these myths.
All that aside, this book is a very simplified read. I literally felt that Bolen was writing down to the audience. This is fine for a brief introduction to this subject matter, but the literary "hand-holding" became very annoying almost immediately.
I'd have to recommend Bryan Magee's "Tristan Chord" over "Ring of Power" in terms of more accurate treatment of the works as well as their informative and contextual analysis. Magee places the massive Ring cycle in context of Wagner's other works (musical and literary), in addition to historical and philosophical trends.Ring of Power: The Abandoned Child, the Authoritarian Father, and the Disempowered Feminine : A Jungian Understanding of Wagner's Ring Cycle Overview

One Ring to Bind Them All: Tolkien's Mythology ReviewI've seen this book around and finally decided to take a chance on it. I was not disappointed. There's so much garbage being published about Tolkien now because of the high popularity from the films, but thank Valinor, this book is one of the real ones. Very clear organization, hard evidence directly from the Tolkien writings, a specific topic successfully argued in terms appropriate to the fields of comparative mythology and sociology. One Ring to Bind Them All: Tolkien's Mythology Overview

Ring of Power: Symbols and Themes Love Vs. Power in Wagner's Ring Cycle and in Us- A Jungian-Feminist Perspective (Jung on the Hudson Book Series) ReviewI won't launch into an academic review or a precise of the story. Suffice to say that this is a wonderful book. For 30 - something women, particularly who identify with a patriarchal 'Wotan' figure and his defiant daughter (Brunnhilde) who forsakes wealth and power for love, this is a journey with which you will be familiar. And a wonderfully warm insight into what can be acheived by such women should they take some risks and act from their hearts! Many books have been written on the suppression of the feminine in society but this multi faceted gem allows a glimpse of so many layers of understanding in such an accessible way that it is irresistible. A peek at Carl Jung, an introduction to the genius of Wagner, the insights of the mythologies and the interpretation and storytelling genius of Jean Shinoda Bolen. If nothing else, this book is good value! So much in one package - a rare find these days indeed!Ring of Power: Symbols and Themes Love Vs.
