Needlework: An Historical Survey ReviewBetty Ring is the expert on needlework history. In this thoroughly researched volume, oozing with B&W photos, she assembles examples and discussions on the following: English Embroideries, Canvas Work, Schoolgirl Embroideries, Bed Coverings, Rugs and Carpets, and Museum Collections. Each chapter is written by a number of experts, including her. She recites the history of this book itself as stemming from the first articles of 1922 in "The Magazine: Antiques" and details the evolution of the various chapters of the book.
This book is so rich in detail and provides historic overview of WHAT people were stitching and WHY. It's remarkable to me that the first words you read in the Introduction are these:
"In the country life of America there are many moments when a woman can have recourse to nothing but her needle for employment. In a dull company, and in dull weather, for instance, it is ill-manners to read; it is ill-manners to leave them; no card-playing there among genteel people--that is abandoned to blackguards. The needle is then a valuable resource. Besides without knowing how to use it herself, how can the mistress of a family direct the work of her servants?" [Thomas Jefferson to his little daughter, Martha.]
I have included 2 Images above to give a clue what is included. Unfortunately, I had to include a color photo of the woman's waistcoat and coif just to illustrate how tantalizing it is. (See this photo in: Needlework (Smithsonian Illustrated Library of Antiques))
If you like needlework history like I do, consider looking up the following. If for no other reason than to see color pictures. The text can't be beat, however.

American Needlework Treasures: Samplers and Silk Embroideries from the Collection of Betty Ring ReviewThis book is one of the standard sources on American needlework, highlighting the collection of Betty Ring.
In the introduction Ring explains what lead her on a lifetime of savvy collection. She was initally desirous of learning more about mourning embroideries. At the time, the middle of the twentieth century, this sort of needlework was "more often scorned than appreciated." Ring discovered that in order to study mourning work, she needed to conduct a full-scale study of all American embroidery.
The text she supplies in this book -- the detailed, loving, historicity of a true connoisseur -- is almost as revealing as the images.
(Still, the belles of the ball of this book are the color illustrations.) Trade paperback, 112 pp, with about 2 to 3 color illustrations on each page. Preface, Introduction, 1 page of End Notes, a 2 page Bibliography, and Index. The work is organized into two categories: Samplers and Silk Embroideries. Within these headings, the work appears by state or region ("the south.") from the 1650s through the 1850s. While this two-book set may
seem expensive, rest assured it's filled with color and black
and white photographs of samplers, paintings, and newspaper
clippings about needlework during this 200-year period.
The writing is thick -- not a "day at the beach" reader, but
is chock-full of information for the different time periods and
areas of the U.S. covered here (the East Coast, mostly New England).
There are no patterns here to follow, nor are there many descriptions
of the stitches themselves. This book gives unique insight into
the origin of outstanding pieces of art/needlework, and discusses
