The Modern Scholar: Rings, Swords, and Monsters: Exploring Fantasy Literature ReviewI preferred Prof. Drout's lectures on science fiction, "From Here toInfinity: An Exploration of Science Fiction Literature", to his fantasy
course, perhaps in part because I enjoy SF more than classic fantasy. Drout is
an enthusiastic and well-spoken lecturer, and his fantasy lectures
mostly held my attention even as he went ON and ON about Tolkien. To
Drout, Tolkien is the elephant in the room when it comes to fantasy,
which every fantasy writer after him has to respond to and distinguish his or
her work from. I think that fantasy has become much broader than that.
He also feels that the main audience for fantasy is young boys and men, which seems mistaken to me. There are whole genres of romantic fantasy, like the
currently popular vampire one, aimed at young women. Or consider
Mercedes Lackey, Le Guin, Diana Gabaldon, and all the authors in the "Firebird"
anthologies. It was interesting learning about Tolkien's life and
work, but there was just too much about him and too little about more
modern authors. The other author he goes a bit overboard on is
Stephen Donaldson and his Thomas Covenanent series.
For those who enjoy Tolkien I think this would be an excellent resource.
But if you want to learn all about the fantasy genre, this is not as
