How to Write Short Stories (With Samples) ReviewRing Lardner was a great short-story writer. However, if you buy this book thinking he actually shared any secrets of that craft, you're in for a huge disappointment, proportionate to how much you pay.
There's a six-page preface, and a couple sentences before each story, that constitutes the entire 'How To' portion. The preface has no real secrets or instruction; it's a sarcastic lark. Really the book is a collection of short stories.
I wish Mr. Lardner had written a book, "How Not to be Suckered Buying How-To Books," and I could have read it before plopping down the hard-earned cash I spent on this. The short stories contained are good, but I already had almost every one in a different collection I already owned of his - that one from a thrift store for $1. Maybe the great savings I got on that one balances out what I overpayed for this deceptive title.How to Write Short Stories (With Samples) Overview
