EEk's Fairy Ring ReviewMother Mouse, EEk wants to take her children into the woods to witness a marvel, but if there is too much messing about and loudness, there will be no marvel to watch. The reader finds themselves hoping that the children will obey the rules so that they will discover, along with EEk's children, the magical goings-on in the deep woods, which we get a clue about on page six - this will only make the reader want even more for the children to be quiet, slow down and be alert.
Little Top is the more interesting character, because he has a problem. Little Top must overcome his relentless elation that manifests itself in over excitement, which leads to wriggling about and joyful noise making. Little Top must try very hard to curb his enthusiasm, for if he erupts in loud pleasure, surely the night's entertainment will be lost! The magic will go out and his fellow brothers and sisters will miss out, because of him! The reader hopes along with EEk that he will manage alright.
G.H Green calls the reader to, particularly the older one, those of us called adults, just stop a moment from your busy day and believe in magical things again as we did as children. Green calls for children to never forget their wonder and powerful belief in fairy tales and the impossible.
As far as the writing is concerned it flows well. The simple language in this story makes the content accessible to readers younger than eight and older than five. However by page nine, I had got annoyed with the word excited/excitement and quiet/quietly. The over use of these words began to grate on me. Words like eagerness/all aflutter and silently/softly would not be far above the target audience's vocabulary and would help to bring variety. As a writer myself, I firmly believe in putting one or two large words in the hope that it encourages children to consult the dictionary or ask Mum and Dad for the meaning.
In her dedication G. H Green writes her story, in the hopes that children everywhere will always be able to see clearly.
I agree! The word 'always' is very telling. Humans do not stay children physically and nor does their minds, but I believe that adults should always be children at a heart level. It has helped me not to get overly cynical at the world. Cynicism kills ones imagination very quickly. You stop seeing clearly the wonderment that can be found in the world. In nature.
This story is a long way from original, but what makes it a little different is the font setting - it is a swirly text that I thought my eyes would grow sick of. I wouldn't encourage the choice, but since the tale of 'EEk's Fairy Ring ' is a short one and the font size is large, it worked OK for me.
On the story title. When I read it, it evoked in my mind a different tale. Note: I had the ebook, so I did not have the cover art. There is something I love about rings and the possible magic qualities such items sometimes hold, so when the ring turned out to be something different I felt myself deflate a little. What it turns out to be, I must let you find out for yourself, if you haven't already studied the cover art closely.
I like to ask myself after reading a story if I felt left wanting something. My answer was this. I wanted more of Little Top and I wanted to know where Father Mouse was in all this? Maybe another EEk tale is in order. That would be fine, I'd welcome another tale. G.M Green, just make sure there is plenty of Little Top in the story. He is a fun character.
Now to the scoring... Out of 5.
For the overall story I give the tale of EEk and her Fairy Ring a 3.
For the characters, Little Top certainly saves the night with a 4.
For the Plot I felt that it was a standard one, and sits on a 2 and a half.
For the writing style apart from repetitive word use this scores a 3 and a half.
