Chord-Scale Theory and Linear Harmony for Guitar: Creative Tools for Improvisation and Composition in Contemporary Music ReviewWhen I picked up this book I was so excited that someone has put this information in a well organized and clear fashion. The diagrams are great and it is obvious that the author is a good music teacher because he presents the theories in a friendly and knowledgeable way. I think some ideas in the book are reminiscent of the way Bill Evans (jazz pianist/composer) described the concept of the "universal musical mind." It is not just a jazz theory book; like Evans idea of the musical mind, the book constantly implies that the commonalities in various styles of music are greater than the differences. The author helps one to understand that and to see that the flexibility of chord/scale theory can be translated into many expressions of playing. I highly recommend this book for guitarists who feel stuck in their habits and who want to expand their options for creating good music.
The book is relatively brief - only 90 or so pages, but the content is substantial and will keep a student busy for quite some time absorbing and utilizing the ideas and fretboard patterns. Though the linear harmony section is loosely based around jazz improvisation, it is not filled with extensive musical excerpts like so many other theory books. This is probably because the author didn't want to force any particular style on the reader. It is friendly towards songwriters, rock guitarists, and jazz players alike. It is a refreshing view.Chord-Scale Theory and Linear Harmony for Guitar: Creative Tools for Improvisation and Composition in Contemporary Music Overview
