The Art of Jewelry Design: Principles of Design, Rings and Earrings ReviewThe good: This book has absolutely drop dead gorgeous illustrations of fine jewelry created using precious metals and precious stones.
The bad: The book is targeted primarily to those who have excellent drafting or drawing skills, with very little to no instruction provided in developing the skills needed to execute the concepts in the book.
The "artistic values" are presented as matter of fact axioms, with no support or explanation. In other words, this is not a "how to do it" book at all. It's a lovely presentation of jewelry design illustration, but there is no teaching here, and no hints on how the illustrations might be actually rendered in metal and stone.
Nice "idea book" for manufacturing fine jewelers who render metal from drawings, but of little to no value for small scale artist jewelers with no drawing skills who render pieces via improvisitory skills and spontaneous arrangement of physical objects. The Art of Jewelry Design: Principles of Design, Rings and Earrings Overview

Create Colorful Aluminum Jewelry: Upcycle cans into vibrant necklaces, rings, earrings, pins, & bracelets ReviewIf you think the only thing you can make from soda cans is crocheted purses and hats, you'll be surprised by the gorgeous jewelry she demonstrates how to make in this book.
The introduction to the book explains the tools and techniques you'll be using to create the jewelry. How to cut and flatten the can and how to connect pieces together with rivets and with epoxy.
Then you get into the projects. They are really gorgeous. They are all made with supplies that are fairly easy to find at any good craft store and they aren't very expensive supplies. The time it takes to make a finished piece is minimal.
The projects start with delicate hanging blossom earrings, and get more complex as the book goes on. The techniques and methods used are inspiring.
My favorite projects include the Tiny Blossom Brooch which uses beads with flowers and leaves made from aluminum cans on a sieve type brooch finding to make a pretty little brooch which reminds me strongly of some of the costume jewelry my grandmother had. The same technique could be used to make a forget-me-not ring or even shoe clips or clip on earrings. The simple daffodil hair pins remind me of the paper daffodils I made in school. My favorite project is the roses that are very realistic and just a lovely addition both to jewelry and to other crafts. I could see these on the cover of a scrapbook or larger ones glued to a paper mache box.
The book is mostly flowers, but the technique uses craft punches to create shapes so you don't need any drawing skills and no more cutting skills then it takes to cut open the can. The methods of turning, bending, and folding the shapes creates lovely realistic flowers. If you paint your cans with a good paint for metals, nobody would even guess this is upcycled jewelry. The finished pieces are fun, floral and remind me strongly of vintage costume jewelry.
The book inspired me to make Christmas ornaments using bottle caps and aluminum can shapes, and there are a bunch of other ideas I want to try.
I recommend this book highly. The projects are simple enough for teens and tweens, and versatile enough to make adult, experienced crafters happy and inspire them to try new things.Create Colorful Aluminum Jewelry: Upcycle cans into vibrant necklaces, rings, earrings, pins, & bracelets Overview

Greek Gems and Finger Rings: Early Bronze to Late Classical ReviewGreek Gems and Finger Rings is not a book about jewelry, merely; it's about history, archeology, art, and the origins of Western civilization. John Boardman makes a great case for why anyone interested in the ancient Greeks, and particularly their fine arts, should take a careful look at their gems and finger rings. Many if not most of the "gems" and "rings" discussed (and pictured in exquisite detail in the book) are actually seals used by the ancient Greeks (and Minoans) for various purposes: to seal and mark private personal correspondence and documents of state, to seal and identify containers and their goods in commerce. They were also used as heraldry. And yes, sometimes they were just jewelry. In Bronze Age Greece, these seals went from crude glyphs to gorgeous works of art in ivory, gold, precious stones. Some depict religious rituals and gods, scenes from mythology. Or they can depict hunting scenes with people and animals. Boardman takes you chronologically from Minoan/Mycenean to Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic. He places the gems in cultural and historical context. He obviously has extensive knowledge of the prior literature on the subject, especially the archeological record and matters of provenance. Many of the gems in this book are artistic masterpieces to rival those of any Greek art. Boardman makes a case for them as miniature sculpture. To me they are more interesting than early Greek vase painting, which appears more frequently in books about ancient Greece than these seals, which are rarely shown. What particularly fascinated me was the clear differences in techniques, tastes, and styles from period to period. Comparing, say, the early Minoan and Mycenean seals to those of the Classical period yields some continuities, of course, but also much that is different, even in the way they portray the human (and also non-human) body. For example, the Minoans depicted people as wasp-waisted, with arm and leg joints very tapered, a total contrast to the Classical depictions, which are more realistic even within their idealizations. The Minoan bodies look more flexible, and their style captures a vibrant sense of animation, movement, life. The Classical gems are beautiful, but I found the Minoan gems more interesting. They are certainly more ecstatically alive. I might wonder to what extent the classical Greeks really believed in their gods, but in the case of the Minoan seals I must say they really convey a sense of pagan worship, showing rituals involving bare-chested women holding serpents, little gods materializing above altars. The Minoans and Myceneans are farther back in time than the Classical Greeks, and their art conveys that primordiality, a spirit and attitude towards existence that appear strange to us today as compared with the seals created in subsequent periods. We recognize the classical; its influence is all around us. But the Minoans seem alien, even in the way they dress. The book itself is large, sumptuous, and brimming with over a thousand detailed impressions and photographs. Well worth the price.Greek Gems and Finger Rings: Early Bronze to Late Classical Overview

Finger Rings: Ancient to Modern (Ashmolean Handbooks) ReviewDiana Scarisbrick & Martin Henig's book turned out to be a complete disappointment to me. I do not own any other books of either author but if this is any indication of what to expect from them on the subject of finger rings then I won't be buying any more of their books. I am a novice collector of ancient rings (mostly roman) and was hoping to find a brief history of roman rings and their symbolism. Given the wide variety of types to be collected (bronze votive types with their various numbers of dots that are supposed to invoke the help or guidance of either male or female dieties as an example) are not mentioned. A background of the various styles of rings and their symbolism would have been useful but all that appeared for the romans in their book was 1/2 page explaining 3 rings whose photos appeared on the facing page. I understand that the book was just supposed to cover a smattering of finger rings throughout human history but what you get in this book is brevity right down to the skull and bones of the subject. Any elaboration on ring styles and a background of their symbolism of the various eras would have made the book interesting. Having said this however, if pretty color photographs (there are very few per historical era that is covered) that are supported with very little historical information is your cup of tea then this may be the book for you. If the authors have some expertise in this field of finger rings and their history it would be nice if they would share it with their readers next time in some future book by elaborating in more detail. Attempts by other authors to cover this subject seem to deal mostly with the gemstones found on the rings and cover the gold and silver types. Bronze rings of the common man do not seem to be covered much in any book. In many ways the bronze rings would be of more interest in shedding light on the beliefs and aspirations of the common man on whose backs those empires were made. I predict that if there is a knowledgeable author out there who puts out a book on the subject of ancient finger rings and includes numerous photographs of the various styles that exist for each culture along with detailed explanations for them (so far as is known) the book will sell and will make alot of money. To date, there is no such book as far as I know.Finger Rings: Ancient to Modern (Ashmolean Handbooks) Overview

Link It: Colorful Chain Mail Jewelry with Rubber O-Rings (Lark Jewelry Books) ReviewThe first flip through - lots of vivid colorful pictures of some pretty and complex looking stuff I can't believe is just rubber o-rings with metal rings. Some designs incorporate the czech "fisher" rings, lampwork, and large hole "donut" style gemstones. Ok, it has my attention...
So I go back to the beginning, the intro shows the 3 basic elements: rubber ring pulled through a rubber ring, a rubber ring folded over another ring and secured by a metal jump ring, and then a combo with rubber rings folded over with more rubber rings pulled through. That's it?! Pull some rubber rings through rubber rings with string or pliers?!
and yet somehow this book is AWESOME! :) I'm extremely impressed with the complexity of some of the designs, and I have a whole lot of respect for the author coming up with such cool, innovative, creative ways to make jewelry with a cost effective materials. I have experience in chainmaille jewelry, and the price of the traditional precious metal wire is through the roof compared to what it was not so long ago!
Some of the color combinations are a little wild, but I think it's great for the book. You should have no problem figuring out which ring went where as you try to make it yourself. It will look classy, interesting and complex when you're done. NOT, as I would have thought, something you'd see on a goth punk working at your local McDonald's. :)
Oh, the stretch means no clasps! Another cool feature of o-ring jewelry! Supplies aren't too hard to find with a quick web search. And they won't tarnish... this technique is getting better and better the more I think about it!Link It: Colorful Chain Mail Jewelry with Rubber O-Rings (Lark Jewelry Books) Overview

The Rings Book (Jewellery Handbooks) ReviewI was looking for a book on making rings and creating stone settings for them, and this is it. It has been the catalyst for a bracelet, the synclastic ring on Pg 46 for the general shape, and Mount 9 on page 85 with a cabochon of my own cutting. The information is more applicable than just rings, and the techniques for creating mounts has also worked well on my pendants. It has proved well worth the money. The Rings Book (Jewellery Handbooks) Overview

Minimal Rings ReviewThis book is a "must" for anyone with a love of jewelry! It is a beautifully done book to stir and inspire the imagination of the viewer.
Becoming prevalent in the 1930's, the minimal art movement encompassed sculpture, painting, architecture, jewelry and other art forms, following Mies van der Rohe's statement that "Less is more". However, Gregory discovered there were no books written on the movement as it affected the design of jewelry. This book is a chronological and pictorial history of minimal design in jewelry, as exemplified by the work of 140 international artists. One will be amazed to discover that a ring made by Fritz Schwerdt in 1930 looks as current in design as one by Fritz Maierhofer made in 2003. Gregory's own definition of "minimal", which he applied in writing this book, is " a limited amount of ornamentation or embellishment". The works include materials both precious (gold, silver, gems) and common (acrylic, iron, rubber), and show amazing variation despite their simplicity. A special threat is the author's own work that is included.
The presentation of the work stays true to Gregory's minimal philosophy. Most of the rings are shown on a black background, including only the most pertinent information, allowing the rings to speak for themselves. Of special interest is the index, which pictures the rings next to photos of the artists who made them.
By all means, treat yourself to this elegant book showing ring design in it's purest form.Minimal Rings Overview

Beads, Buttons, and Bijoux: 58 Original Designs for Making Rings, Necklaces, and Bracelets ReviewI checked this book out at our local library, and am seriously considering buying it. I have several other jewelry books, and this book has lots of designs I haven't seen elsewhere.
There is not a lot of use of chains/headpins in the book. Many designs use nylon thread or 32 gauge wire, and a lot of seed beads. I really like the author's use of embroidery ribbon. Instructions seem easy enough: one friend of mine made two rings in one afternoon, and I made a necklace and a ring. As the other reviewers said, look at it first to see if the designs appeal to you.
If you like the Bead Fantasies series, you may like this also. The designs here are simpler than Bead Fantasies, but they use lots of seed beads and have a generally similar delicate appeal.
I'd give it 5 stars, but there are too many ring designs and not enough necklace/bracelet designs for me.Beads, Buttons, and Bijoux: 58 Original Designs for Making Rings, Necklaces, and Bracelets Overview

Big Book of Crystal Beads: 70+ Bracelets, Earrings, Necklaces, and Rings (Creative Homeowner) ReviewThere are 38 patterns for rings, 11 for earrings, 5 for bracelets, one pin and 19 pendants. Some of them are sets though. All the patterns use mainly crystals with rocailles or Japanese seed beads. Also the work is done with 2 needles and the thread as explained in the English translation is not familiar to me but in my French original it says transparent nylon size from 0.25-0.35mm. The illustrations are in good color with excellent charts showing the steps of work in the French method. Most of the projects call for 4mm bicones with a few larger ones and sometimes rhinestones or rondelles. Swarowski is not specified but the pictures definitely look to be mainly Swarowski. The work is needle crossing and the techniques are illustrated and explained before the projects. The first earring project explains how to attach the earwires but none of the others do. Also the ring bands are not specified but there is a general explanation at the beginning of the book suggesting a way to do them.
Another procedure explained at first is called "assembling picks" or stems of beads. The projects are arranged into groups of 4 seasons with colors suitable to the season and there is a large variety of colors. There are no cabochons or bezels and the work seems easy to do and every project has a difficulty level so beginners can wade right in. The book is a large hardback with good print and appears to be quite sturdy. If you like rings this book is definitely for you. Not 5 stars because I would have liked more earrings and bracelets. Also recommended because there are so many projects for crystals and because they are small items, and therefore less costly to make.Big Book of Crystal Beads: 70+ Bracelets, Earrings, Necklaces, and Rings (Creative Homeowner) Overview

New Rings: 500+ Designs from Around the World ReviewSo far the only review for this book is a shallow dismissal of it, an exhortation to the reader not to read, but to disregard. But if you do take the advice of passing this book by you'll be missing out on quite a lot. Maybe it isn't a book everybody would want to own, but ANY TYPE OF ARTIST, from photographer to dancer, poet to web designer, ANY ARTIST would benefit from giving this wonderful collection of images a bit of consideration. If you don't buy it, try to borrow it from your local library's inter-library loan program if available. The first reviewer of this book says (s)he considers herself "open-minded" but in fact offers an extremely narrow interpretation of the rings in this book: i.e. (s)he views them as actual wearable ornamentation that readers would want to wear. That's not at all what this is about! This is thought experiment made tangible. How much Haute Couture fashion is actually made to be worn? Skirts made of paper and dresses formed from steel are not made to be worn, but rather to be seen and thereby serve as inspiration. The collection of rings found here is an incredibly rich source of inspiration - I guarantee it will have you thinking outside the box even more than you usually do. If you're interested in collecting antiques, this is not the book for you, but if you are an individual devoted to understanding the world and possibly creating meaning and/or beauty, then at least give this book a glance.New Rings: 500+ Designs from Around the World Overview

30-Minute Rings: 60 Quick & Creative Projects for Jewelers (30-Minute Series) Review30 Minute Rings by Marthe Le Van is a collection of ring projects by designers who work with different materials and using various methods.
A lot of different types of ring projects are in this volume, so if you're looking to expand your skills, this offers projects that may be challenging, and will probably take more than a half hour to make. The projects only have minimal illustrations, but the text is well written. If you haven't worked with a torch or jewelers saw before, you may want to have a good reference for the projects that require them.
Rings as art form, and some artistically made rings that are very wearable, this collection has wonderful projects including several that don't require specialized tools or torches. A lot of the rings that do require more specific silver smithing tools require just a basic set up so you won't need a kiln or casting equipment.
My favorites are
Wire flower frame ring. The simple technique creates a frame you can slip a small reinforced photo into.
The ring on the cover. This one reminds me of bracelets I used to make out of silver. The ring as shown is made affordable by using brass sheet which you can pick up from hobby stores
The wire ring that is the first project. This ring is gracefully shaped from wire and can be adjustable, which also makes it a good style for a toe ring.
The plumber's pipe ring which is carved from plastic piping. The clever use for a material you wouldn't normally think of as a jewelry making supply is wonderful.
The techniques used include crocheting with wire, various texturing techniques, soldering, sawing, forming, carving, chain mail, setting stones in prong, wire and bezel settings, and drawing up a bead on wire.
It's inspirational, the rings as shown as lovely, but you might have beads you want to instead of the moonstone chips on one, or maybe a special button you want to incorporate into a project. The small scale and small amount of materials needed allows for a lot of experimentation.
I recommend this book mostly for people who like to work with metal or who are learning to work with metal along with their beads.30-Minute Rings: 60 Quick & Creative Projects for Jewelers (30-Minute Series) Overview

1000 Rings: Inspiring Adornments for the Hand (500 Series) ReviewHello, I'm a Jeweller living and working in rural Australia. I was so excited by this book. I am participating in an exhibition in Perth later this month called The Ring, the book 1000 Rings was perfect for me. I design and make works for exhibition and contrary to other reviews this book does indeed have some very wearable work in it and some wonderful interpretations of what is or isn't. Still a great platform for my work. Believe me I can't afford to spend days on a piece exhibit it and have it come back a month later! So yes its a great book for the open minded jeweller or otherwise. Beautifully put together and the images are very good. I'm glad there isn't a lot of wording allowing more room for more images.....1000 Rings: Inspiring Adornments for the Hand (500 Series) Overview

Ring a Day: 700 Photos from a 365 Day Jewelry Challenge ReviewArtists took up the challenge to create one ring each day for a year. No matter where they were or what they had to work with. The results were rings that challenge the basic structure of a ring, becoming more sculpture than jewelry. Rings that were made of found items or whatever was handy. Alternative materials and some that were by their nature, transient. Creative and wonderful ideas are all over this book.
Some of the rings made me chuckle, and more than I would have thought, I stopped on a page to show it to my husband. Some just astounded me with their beauty or their function. Many of them made me look at the form of a ring differently or at the use of things people might normally throw away.
Absolutely inspiring. The designs can be springboards for your own imagination. One ring made me think of something I want to try with a votive candle holder. Several others made me think of kinetic possibilities with beads to make pendants.
The photographs are very well done, the rings are really creative. This small volume is one that I'll keep by my bed to glance through before sleep if I'm stuck for ideas.
While a lot of the rings are made using hot jewelry techniques, some of them are cold formed. Some are made with alternative materials that are fairly easy to find.
My daughter was just as charmed by this book, and it inspired her creative side in a completely different way. Some of the rings that thrilled me were less interesting to her and some that inspired her greatly didn't charm me as much. Since we can be very different, it was neat for me to see that this collection could inspire her as much as it did me. It's a gallery of wonderful art in small scale.Ring a Day: 700 Photos from a 365 Day Jewelry Challenge Overview

Chained: Create Gorgeous Chain Mail Jewelry One Ring at a Time ReviewThis has to be the best instructional guide for maille that I've read yet. The detailed close up pictures of actually working with the rings has been very helpful. There is a lot of detail to showing exactly how a weave works for beginners, and shows a fast track to refresh your memory if you're doing it again or if you have a lot of experience weaving. I highly recommend this book to people of all skill levels. And the projects are fantastic, too.Chained: Create Gorgeous Chain Mail Jewelry One Ring at a Time Overview
