Rakshasa's Ring (Clay Sanskrit Library) ReviewWe tend to be centered around our own language so that works originally written in English predominate. We pick up a few works from French or German, and a little from other languages such as Russian. Works such as this one, written in Sanskrit are part of the classic literature of India, but are very little known here.
This play is a true classic, and rivals 'The Prince' in content and sophistication. It is set just after Alexander's invasion of India (about 325 B.C.) and concerns the interplay between the chief advisor of the previous dynasty (Rakshasa) and his replacement in the new court. It brings a maturity and an insight to the stage in a manner just a bit different than normally seen on our stages.
This book presents a new translation with the original Sanskrit on the left hand side and the translation by the late Michael Coulson on the right hand side.Rakshasa's Ring (Clay Sanskrit Library) Overview
