The Oxford Handbook of Inter-Organizational Relations (Oxford Handbooks) ReviewIt's not a handbook per se. It's more as a sound liteture review on every aspect related to the subject (interoranizational relations). The depth of the academic review in all articles is truly remarkable. Worked just fine for my thesis as an introduction in an array of authors, texts and subjects! Further investigations always starts with a new look in its pages...
The only fault lies in the omission of some theoretical bodies of knowledge (the authors themselves admit it). This ought to be reviewed in a future edition. But it doesn't take the bright out of it, not at all!The Oxford Handbook of Inter-Organizational Relations (Oxford Handbooks) Overview

The Ancient Mounds of Poverty Point: Place of Rings (Native Peoples, Cultures, and Places of the Southeastern United States) ReviewPoverty Point in Louisiana is the grand-daddy of all Indian mounds in the US. Built in the shape of a amphitheater on a low ridge overlooking the swamps of the Mississippi River, Poverty Point is 3,500 years old. Author Gibson, an archaelogist, gives us a vivid, speculative picture of the people who built Poverty Point
You can skip the first two chapters which cover the history of theories about Poverty Point. Chapter Three begins the description of the place. Gibson goes through chapters about who lived at Poverty Point, their economy, politics, religion, equipment, and how they built the massive earthworks -- which consist of six concentric half-moon rings spread over a square kilometer of ground -- an enormous undertaking. It wasn't the first mound built in the United States -- but it was far larger than any previous structures.
The Poverty Point people, in Gibson's view, were pre-agricultural hunters and gatherers which makes their achievement even more remarkable. They lacked stones, so rocks for spearheads and other tools were imported from hundreds of miles away. What did they exchange for the rocks? Gibson doesn't know. That's an unanswered question. What did they eat? Gibson says mainly fish from the lakes and bayous nearly surrounding the place. Was Poverty Point only a ceremonial site? If not how many people lived there? Gibson calls it a residential site but doesn't believe it was large enough to be called a city.
This book blends archaelogical findings with ethnology, common sense and, frankly, guesswork -- but guesses by an expert on the subject. As the oldest major Indian ruin in the United States, Poverty Point has a mystical significance similar in my mind to Stonehenge.

Short Cuts: A Guide to Oaths, Ring Tones, Ransom Notes, Famous Last Words, and Other Forms of Minimalist Communication ReviewSome readers may be searching for the ideal prescriptive usage manual for the short forms in which we do our daily linguistic business; this is not that sort of book. What it does do is tell us how people actually DO use the icon, the bank holdup note, skywriting, texting, and other miniature communication forms, with plenty of entertaining back-story on how these came to be (some of them, for all the apparent modernity of the short take as message, dating all the way back to the Romans and even beyond). Like the authors' previous offerings, this is a book that can be nibbled at for a mental bedtime snack or, for the truly ravenous logophile, devoured at one sitting (well, two or three anyway; there is a thundering lot of information in here.) Ideal for the reader who always wanted to know why newspaper headlines sometimes make unwitting gaffes ("Squad Helps Dog Bite Victim") or what (and why) the term is for a deliberately spurious dictionary entry inserted by the editors to foil lexicographic plagiarism by the competition (a "mountweazel"). An immensely entertaining book. (Warning: In spots it is also quite funny and may make you laugh out loud, so you probably shouldn't browse it in the library's reading room or the Amtrak train's Quiet Car, just to be on thesafe side.)Short Cuts: A Guide to Oaths, Ring Tones, Ransom Notes, Famous Last Words, and Other Forms of Minimalist Communication Overview

The Cocaine Kids: The Inside Story Of A Teenage Drug Ring ReviewPretty good book...
A story concerning the lifes of 8 kids deeply involved in cocaine trade in NYC during the 1980's. It is told from the point of view of an outsider looking in, which I would have rather seen it documented from the 'kids' view but what can you do? Bricks of coke, cut, re-rocked, packaged, street level retail, and all the nitty-gritty details involved with the process. If your looking for a book that tells the tale of the route of cocaine from the source, into the nose/arm of a user, and the people that make it happen. This book is for you, I am a sucker for this type of literature [drug-porn] so take my review with that in mind.
