Catherine's Ring ReviewThis novel sucked me in from page one. I work full time, have two children, in the middle of moving, and I still managed to finish this book within two days. I loved the imagery and the constant suspense from chapter to chapter. The author did a great job of interjecting some history in the book as well. The book is about two families, two twin sisters, and two identical rings. One family is located in the United States and the other from "across the pond" in England. The family in England was descended from a Caroline Barton and the family in the United States descended from a Nicholas Linden who was Caroline's sister, Catherine Barton's, one true love. The two rings had their origin with Catherine and Caroline's father, Joseph Barton. Joseph had given each of his daughters identical rings whose gems were said to have mystical properties. He acquired these gems in exchange for some gold coins from a tribal leader and medicine man on one of his journeys in the late 1800's.Catherine was sent to England by her father, Joseph Barton, because she was in love with a Nicholas Linden and they were of two different faiths. Her father did not approve of an inter-faith relationship and thought that Catherine would have time to think and forget about Nicholas if he sent her to England to live with his sister-in-law. Fate intervened though and took Catherine during the sinking of the Lusitania. Before she left however, she confided in her sister and told Caroline that she would be giving her ring to Nicholas to hold in his safe-keeping while she was gone. From the time of the disaster though, Caroline knew that her twin sister Catherine was gone and was devastated. Caroline wrote letters to her dead sister Catherine until the day of her own death.
Some 98 years later after the sinking, the beautiful ring was finally delivered to Nicholas' descendant, also named Nicholas Linden. The book details Nicholas and Maria's, Nicholas' wife, journey in discovering why the ring was delivered to them and not to the original Nicholas Linden. During this journey, Maria starts seeing the spirit of a lovely young woman. Many questions came up along the way - Where was the package all this time? Why was it mysteriously discovered now in the post office under a counter during renovations? Was someone really just holding on to it all this time for a reason or was it misplaced by a clerk in the post office all those years ago? Did Catherine give it to a confidante instead and not mail the package at all?
On the other side of the Atlantic, Caroline Barton's descendent, Catherine is on her own quest to discover what happened to her great grandaunt's ring. She is in possesion of her great grandmother's (Caroline's) ring since it was passed down to her through the generations. She discovers some papers and various letters in her ancestral home in England that really peaks her interest and makes her wonder what ever happened to the other ring. This drives her to make her way to the states with her mother and meet Nicholas and Maria. Together, the two families forge ahead and work together to uncover the mystery surrounding the rings, the visions of the young woman, and the mysterious story behind it.
I don't want to give too much away because I want you to read this book! The ending was wonderful - everything I was hoping it would be. Mrs. Bowman has an instinctual talent for weaving a beautiful story into a haunting and suspensful whole. I would recommend this for all readers of every age.Catherine's Ring Overview
