Grasping the Ring II: Nine People Who Matter ReviewThe author is the former president of Major League Baseball's American League and co-owner of the Charleston RiverDogs minor league baseball team, so his love of baseball and sports is well established. For this book, Budig has written short essays about nine people whose life was intertwined with sports. The people profiled are:*) Rachel Robinson- widow of Jackie Robinson and bulwark of emotional strength when he was going through the strain of integrating baseball.
*) Bill Veeck - maverick and innovative owner of major league baseball teams, best known for sending the diminutive Eddie Gaedel up to bat, he was the American league owner that integrated the league.
*) Bob Costas - acknowledged by many as the best broadcaster in the profession today.
*) Gene Autry - known as "the singing cowboy" Autry was the longtime owner of the Angels franchise in the American League.
*) Bob Gibson - the dominant pitcher in the last half of the 1960's when pitching began to overwhelm the hitting. One of the toughest competitors ever, in the words of a teammate, "he pitched hateful." His 1.12 ERA in 1968 was a pitching phenomenon in a phenomenal year.
*) Billy Beane - general manager of the Oakland Athletics, he revolutionized the business side of the game, introducing metrics for evaluation that have even been adopted outside of baseball.
*) Jerry West - growing up in West Virginia and practicing basketball on a packed dirt surface, West became a star in the NBA and then excelled in the front office of several teams.
*) Stan Kasten - chief executive extraordinaire, at one time the simultaneous president of three teams, the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Thrashers.
*) Bud Selig - longtime commissioner of Major League Baseball, he has been the head of baseball through the most trying labor difficulties and performance enhancing drugs scandals.
The essays are laudatory and brief, making them nice fodder for a late night reading, as you are getting ready for bed.Grasping the Ring II: Nine People Who Matter Overview
