The Early American Industrial Revolution, 1793-1850 (Let Freedom Ring) ReviewThe Early American Industrial Revolution, 1793-1850 (Let Freedom Ring: The New Nation) certainly does not seem like a history book to many of its readers. Its extensive use of subtle transitions between anecdotal stories and factual evidence truely makes the reader feel as if he's no longer living in the 21st century, but rather, has entered into an entirely new world of the Industrial Revolution. However, the book fails to describe fully certain key elements inherent to the Industrial Revolution. I would definately recommend this book to people who are interested in understanding a general concept of how the Industrial Revolution changed the course of American development, rather than those interested in a lenghty, confusing, tangent-bearing book.The Early American Industrial Revolution, 1793-1850 (Let Freedom Ring) Overview

Hats in the Ring: An Illustrated History of American Presidential Campaigns ReviewThis book has pictures and an article for each campaign - beginning from George Washington up to the 1996 election. While I found some of the pictures to be quite interesting and the articles to be somewhat informative, I would still say that this is more of an overview kind of book - as opposed to a detailed version of our elections.
I think the author could have picked some other pictures or visuals to make the book more appealling, and could have written in more depth about the campaigns.
Nevertheless, the book is a nice book and is a book that could be used as a reference in some respects.Hats in the Ring: An Illustrated History of American Presidential Campaigns Overview

Target Tokyo: The Story of the Sorge Spy Ring ReviewModel research work (61 reference pages) on the ploys of Stalin's master spy Richard Sorge.
Sorge penetrated the highest power circle in Japan and had excellent connections with the Nazi-party through the German Embassy in Tokyo.
Prange proves that Sorge informed Stalin about the German attack against the Soviet-Union (operation Barbarossa) and that Stalin didn't believe him. That Sorge pinpointed the Pearl Harbor attack is for the author a myth.
Sorge got caught by the Japanese when his spy work became careless. He hoped that Moscow would save him through an exchange of prisoners, but his friends let him fall as a burnt spy. He was hanged. Only twenty years later Moscow admitted that he was an agent of the Comintern.
Excellent portrait of Sorge: a desperate soldier of WWI, who saw in communism the salvation of humanity, but also a hard drinker and a compulsive womanizer. The definitie book on Sorge. Four Hats in the Ring: The 1912 Election and the Birth of Modern American Politics (American Presidential Elections) ReviewI have to disagree with the first two reviewers. The author made this a fascinating read in how Wilson won and Taft, Debs, and Roosevelt were the losers. Even before going into the election, Wilson had it sown up. Roosevelt and Taft split the Republican vote. The Republicans consisted of a Progressive wing and a conservative wing. Taft led the conservative wing and Roosevelt went on to form a Progressive Party out of the liberal wing of the Republican Party. Wilson could count on the solid South and various other states thereby meeting the electoral requirements of winning the election. The solid South consisted of whites who didn't let the black population vote, and Wilson gladly accepted this support. This doesn't show the Democratic Party in its best light. Due to this Wilson won, Taft and Roosevelt lost. I was impressed with both Taft and Roosevelt. When shown written evidence of how Wilson cheated on his wife, both did not sink to the level of using this evidence. Taft was civil throughout the campaign. He knew he was going to lose.
This is a nice short read on an interesting campaign. I think the author put some time in describing the four major candidates and parties, and how they game planed the election. Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring ReviewAs the title above indicates, I'm a collector of books set in Revolutionary America as well as the author of a frontier novel. I usually take my time reading a book because I like to savor it as I read. However, much to my wifes surprise, I finished the book in only a few days. I enjoyed the book so much that I wanted to keep on reading when I usually would have paused. The book reads like a novel and Mr. Rose has a unique talent for being able to transport the reader to the time of the revolution and put an entire conflict into perspective. He did a terrific job of capturing the pace of life, which can be a difficult thing to do with the written word. I have literally read over a thousand books on the revolution, and this book is in my top 5. Best of all the book can be trusted to be true to history and is not an attempt at revisionism. You won't go wrong by ordering this book.Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring Overview
