Return of the Heroes: The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Social Conflict ReviewAs a fan of Tolkein, Star Wars, and Harry Potter and one who has appreciated a number of analytic treatments of their themes in relation to culture and society, I was expecting something a little different. Perhaps a more accurate title might have been "Defending the Heroes: Debating Critics of Tolkein and Star Wars, with a Little Harry Potter Thrown in."
The larger portion of the book consists of the author cataloging an extensive list of negative criticisms and in turn criticizing the critics for their method and mood. Granted, his arguments make a lot of sense. But there is much less positive treatment of heroic themes and their potential validity and usefulness in modern society, and much repetitive groaning about how mistaken the critics are.
Not only that, the subtitle suggests that three different series will be treated in the book. In fact, Harry Potter is mentioned only briefly, a few times, almost as if his inclusion were meant to capitalize on his current popularity. For the amount of space devoted to Harry Potter themes, he could just as easily (and more accurately) have been excluded from the title. I found this to be misleading.Return of the Heroes: The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter and Social Conflict Overview

Hitters, Dancers and Ring Magicians: Seven Boxers of the Golden Age and Their Challengers ReviewKelly Richard Nicholson's new boxing book, HITTERS, DANCERS AND RING MAGICINAS: SEVEN BOXERS OF THE GOLDEN AGE AND THEIR CHALLENGERS, examines seven great turn of the century fighters - George "Kid" Lavigne (21 page chapter), Bob Fitzsimmons (39 pages), "Barbados" Joe Walcott (14 pages), Joe Gans (19 pages), "Terrible" Terry McGovern (19 pages), Sam Langford (21 pages), & Stanley Ketchel (33 pages) - who fought in the years after the transition from the bareknuckle era to the gloved one. The author starts off with a brief but informative chapter that outlines the evolution of prizefighting up to the aforementioned transition, then provides generally excellent chapter-long biographies of each of the above boxers (with profiles of their most noteworthy opponents), and winds up with a chapter regarding devvelopments in the sport since the "Golden Age", with the opinions of the author and those of past and present historians as to some of the merits of "old time" fighters relative to boxers of subsequent eras. On the whole, this is a good - albeit short - book, well written, insightful, entertaining, and well-researched.
There is, however, a major problem with Nicholson's work, which is that it shortchanges its (logical) primary audience/buyers: "hardcore" fight fans. One would think that boxing aficionados (those of us who are interested in all boxing eras, anyway) would have ALREADY read the available (full length) biographies of some of the magnificent seven Nicholson examines, such as International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) member Clay Moyle's utterly superb SAM LANGFORD: BOXING'S GREATEST UNCROWNED CHAMPION (2007), Colleen Aycock and Mark Scott's excellent - albeit very biased - JOE GANS: A BIOGRAPHY OF THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN WORLD BOXING CHAMPION (2008), and any of the recently published and generally good bio's of "Freckled Bob" (though my favourite is still Gilbert Odd's THE FIGHTING BLACKSMITH: THE STORY OF BOB FITZSIMMONS [1976]), so one must wonder why he devoted (whole and, in the case of Fitz, long) chapters to Langford, Gans, and Fitzsimmons, especially since he imparts little, if any, new info about them. Surely, Nicholson would have better served hardcore boxing fans better if he had gone into greater depth regarding the lives (and fights!) of Lavigne, Walcott, and McGovern (I exclude Ketchel here because, while there hasn't been an in depth bio written of him lately - a good one, anyway - there are some good Ketchel profiles out there already, such as the chapters on the "Michigan Assassin" in Moyle's book and in Graeme Kent's THE GREAT WHITE HOPES: THE QUEST TO DEFEAT JACK JOHNSON [2005], and on IBRO member Monte Cox's website, coxscorner) AND providedlonger, more detailed profiles of the super seven's worthier opponents and other greats of that era, such as Young Griffo, George Dixon, "Young" Peter Jackson, "Mysterious" Billy Smith, Bobby Dobbs, Jack Blackburn, Dave Holly, "Nonpareil" Jack Dempsey, Kid McCoy, Tommy Ryan, etc (AND, perhaps, given a couple of them the full chapter treatment - indeed, if written with casual or new fans in mind, it might have been better to write full [but shorter] chapters on more than just these seven fighters).
Other quibbles with thisbook include a) its dearth of photos (just one or two of each of the seven pugilists); b) the lack of a chapter specifically addressing the different conditions (equipment, rules, etc) under which turn of the century boxers fought compared to other eras, which would have benefited the "casual" boxing fans who grabbed this work (while the author does mention old time conditions here and there in the first eight chapters and addresses some of the differences in the book's Afterword, he more or less elaborates those differences as "asides" or brief discussions rather than making a cohesive argument on a particualr facet of boxing; for example, Nicholson could have explained that fighters of the seven's era were/had to be MUCH more durable than, say, modern fighters because the conditions necessitated it, conditions such as fighting with smaller, less padded, less water-resistant gloves that had separate, unpadded thumbs, fighting without benefit of mouthguards, protective cups, and lubricants on the face, having to deal with referees who regularly turned a blind eye to all manner of fouls, having to occasionally fight opponents from higher weight classes to make ends meet when bouts with good boxers of one's own weight were hard to come by, having to often enter the ring for bouts while nursing serious injuries, etc, and the author could have pointed out that, although modern fighters use gloves with much more padding than in previous eras, engage in championship bouts that are of shorter duration than in previous eras, generallt fight much less often, and are reputed to be fitter and better conditioned than fighters of yesterday, they, nonetheless, tend to throw less punches per round than inany gloved era, save the "Golden Age" when fights were often of MUCH greater duration and the average fighter fought much more frequently ~ okay, okay, maybe TOO much detail here); c) given the brevity of the book (just 188 pages of "text") and its price, the author really ought to have included the sevne fighters' ring records or, at least, their measurements; d) Nicholson's erroneous statement that former heavyweight chasmpion Jim Jeffries was 6'2", which so many others have also claimed (this is a pet peeve of mine because in photos and film clips that show him standing next/close to the 5'11' or 11 1/2" or 11 3/4" Fitzsimmons or the 6'1" James J. Corbett, the "Boilermaker" seems to be about the same height as - if not shorter than - the former and definitely appears to be at least 2 inches shorter than the latter); e) the author's ridiculous assertion (while trying to illustrate the evolution of ring technique) that Gene Tunney's improved showings in subsequent bouts against Harry Greb after getting pummeled in their first encounter was a victory of "Gene's (improving) ring science" over Greb's (unorthodox) ring style (not only does Nicholson ignore the fact that the "Fighting Marine" grew from a "medium-sized" light heavyweight to a [small] heavyweight during the course of their five bout series whereas the "Pittsburgh Wildcat" remained a natural middleweight, that Tunney was young and edging toward his prime while Greb started to go "downhill" some time around their second or third bout, and that Greb's eyesight had been progressively deteriorating since BEFORE the first Tunney bout, but the author also doesn't seem to grasp the fact that "Greb's all-angles attack" WAS a demonstration of ring science in that positioning [and re-positioning) oneself at an angel to an opponent at which one can easily hit one's counterpart while he/she cannot easily land in return IS one of the most important skills in ring craftmanship - indeed, whenever Tunney spoke of his bouts with the "Human Windmill", he made a pointof saying that Greb rarely stood dirrectly in front of him and was always moving, either in and out on Gene or circling to the side); f) the lack of a more in depth account of the 1904 Walcott-Gans bout (the Aycock & Scott book also failed toprovide one and Nicholson should have known this because he states that he read their book, so it could have been something new for him to "bring to the table"); g) the lack of a citation concerning the weigh-in weights of Gans and Lanjgford for their 1903 mill (I only mention this because Nicholson's info contradicts the weights given by Aycock & Scott AND by Moyle, and NONE of the three books cite a source); and h) the fact that the chapter/endnotes and their "citation numbers" often do not correspond/align. (Perhaps, I am nitpicking on some points above, but one must assume that a HISTORIAN is probably writing for an informed audience, right? In addition, this book is pretty expensive relative to its length/size.)
STILL, this is, again, a good informative book, especially for casual or new boxing fans, but might not be worth the $30+ outlay to boxing fans who've already familiarized themselves with Lavigne, Fitz, Walcott, Gans, McGovern, Langford, and Ketchel via other sources. Incidentally, all of the books cited above are available here at Amazon.com and I highly recommend all of them.Hitters, Dancers and Ring Magicians: Seven Boxers of the Golden Age and Their Challengers Overview

Adam, the Altaic Ring and the Children of the Sun ReviewA major league biblical analysis of more than 10,000 years of historical, astronomical events verified with scientific theory/research from the works of Immanuel Velikovsky...by far the best break down of biblical historical events from mainly Genesis and Exodus with a sprinkling from other passages, that I've read. These passages selected, are separated and sliced into detail and brought to life from the classic biblical analogs... then the mega history is brought forward and presented for presentation. You will see the parallel events today. There are three major players brought to the scenes from the authors interpretations focusing on 4000B.C....The Adams Group family, The Altaic Ringers, and The Sun Children.
This first group reportedly got caught up in the cold cataclysm of the Altaic ring (near Moscow) and suffered to a point where it weighed heavily on the type of individual that his current descendents are. There is very little difference in the classic Adam and the psuedo modern Adam although there are exceptions...
When the Adams group recovered he along with the other browned Altaic ringers (too long away from home to remember their home training) to the southeast left for survival purposes and met up with the Arameans, eventually meeting with the Sun Children in the fertile valley's of the south known as the Fertile Crescent Valley and the Nile Delta (the garden of Eden), where the triple A group showed their true colors. see page 121....They were not liked and were thrown out of these valleys frequently or whenever, the last group, the Sun Children, whose civilization was being wrecked, decided it was time for a good a#@^&% whippin as the current kemetic history has shown several times, the last being under the family leadership of Shabaka, Pianky, Tirhaqa....
The point of this mental exercise ...to show that "the cultural norms of behavior can be traced to early physical environmental conditions of various cultural groups"....the whole point being that your past can provide guidance for your future, in this case, the message is for the militarily defeated Sun Children.Adam, the Altaic Ring and the Children of the Sun Overview

The Tao of Success: The Five Ancient Rings of Destiny ReviewIn contrast to the first book "The Tao of Daily Life" in which Derek organize the contents based on themes, this book has been written in a sequential and systematic manner. Derek chose this organizational style to further clarify how to apply Tao to our daily life systematically. I believe this is also to address many questions from the readers who want to look at the big picture of how to apply Tao to daily life.
Specifically, according to Derek own words' "Although there is no universally recognized curriculum for the Tao, there are common patterns in traditional cultivation. These patterns are not random or arbitrary. They have been distilled from experience over thousands of years. When the ancient sages observed someone making a meaningful change for the better, they took notes."
Derek addresses this with 5 steps sequence considering both internal and external aspects of our life:
Internal aspect:
Step 1: Your spirituality. Change yourself inside-out and "unleash the hidden power within". In my opinions, it is similar to "substance over form" (a popular phrase in accounting field).
This consists of 5 elements: Tranquility, Buddha nature, faith, existence, and renewal.
Step 2: Your mind. "Take advantage of the water by regulating and channeling its flow. Rather than to let it splash out in random directions..." is such a beautiful metaphor for this. I think this is to understand, recognize, monitor and control your own thinking.
This consists of 5 elements: Perception, authenticity, integrity, perspectives, and alchemy.
External aspect:
Step 3: Your relationships. Good relationship management and conflict resolution are emphasized here. "The Tao encompass the full range of human interactions, from the darkness of discord to the light of fellowship."
This consists of 5 elements: criticism, reaction, harmony, alignment, and seamless compassion.
I extremely like "The Blanket" short story that illustrates "seamless" compassion. This story clears up not only the doubt of what is really compassion and forgetfulness but also why we should have compassion--a seamless compassion. Seriously, if everyone reads and understands this story alone, our world will be way more peaceful!
Step 4: Your world. "This step highlights the practical and down-to-earth nature of an authentic practice...in managing prosperity."
This consists of 5 elements: Emptiness, attention, knowledge, acquisition, and detachment.
In my opinions, opposite to many who misunderstand that the Tao suggests no-action, the Tao actually suggests we not only plan, think and talk about something but also take actions accordingly. In this step, Derek shows exactly how we should be pro-active to take opportunities and "handle the gains properly, rather than to have them handle you."
Step 5: Your destiny. "The last step pulls together the work of the previous four to channel it toward life transformation...This step is not only about the how of destiny determination, but also the why."
This consists of 5 elements: Command, goals, persistence, fortitude, and purpose.
This is like now you have all the parts and tools, you actually need to assemble and build the whole system. Therefore, systematically speaking, I would suggest everyone to learn the parts and tools (from the first 4 steps) and build your own unique system (with suggestion of step 5) for gradual improvements in your life from now on and forever.
The above is just a very brief summary of what this book has to offer. For every element from every step, Derek illustrates it with concrete and memorable short story in a format similar to the "Tao of daily life". Again, Derek's writing contains such significantly deep wisdom from seemingly simple and sometimes funny stories.
Last but not least, when you read this book with an open mind and critical thinking, don't forget to actually test it by applying Tao in your own life, then you will probably see Derek Lin' short stories playing right in your head. When you encounter a similar situation like the short story, review what you do with and without the Tao wisdom, and see the result live. I always like to revisit the stories and magically enough, every time I re-read the story, I clear out few more doubts.
Finally, as a student in many practical majors (undergraduate student in math, and accounting and graduate student industrial engineering), I always like to look at big pictures before scrutinize into the details. This book provides exactly that systematic framework.
I would say this is like the new invention of the century: iTao 1.0 framework! :)
This book can be improved even further if Derek links in more Tao-Te-Ching chapters comprehensively, not just short stories. The Tao of Success: The Five Ancient Rings of Destiny Overview

Greek Gems and Finger Rings: Early Bronze to Late Classical ReviewGreek Gems and Finger Rings is not a book about jewelry, merely; it's about history, archeology, art, and the origins of Western civilization. John Boardman makes a great case for why anyone interested in the ancient Greeks, and particularly their fine arts, should take a careful look at their gems and finger rings. Many if not most of the "gems" and "rings" discussed (and pictured in exquisite detail in the book) are actually seals used by the ancient Greeks (and Minoans) for various purposes: to seal and mark private personal correspondence and documents of state, to seal and identify containers and their goods in commerce. They were also used as heraldry. And yes, sometimes they were just jewelry. In Bronze Age Greece, these seals went from crude glyphs to gorgeous works of art in ivory, gold, precious stones. Some depict religious rituals and gods, scenes from mythology. Or they can depict hunting scenes with people and animals. Boardman takes you chronologically from Minoan/Mycenean to Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic. He places the gems in cultural and historical context. He obviously has extensive knowledge of the prior literature on the subject, especially the archeological record and matters of provenance. Many of the gems in this book are artistic masterpieces to rival those of any Greek art. Boardman makes a case for them as miniature sculpture. To me they are more interesting than early Greek vase painting, which appears more frequently in books about ancient Greece than these seals, which are rarely shown. What particularly fascinated me was the clear differences in techniques, tastes, and styles from period to period. Comparing, say, the early Minoan and Mycenean seals to those of the Classical period yields some continuities, of course, but also much that is different, even in the way they portray the human (and also non-human) body. For example, the Minoans depicted people as wasp-waisted, with arm and leg joints very tapered, a total contrast to the Classical depictions, which are more realistic even within their idealizations. The Minoan bodies look more flexible, and their style captures a vibrant sense of animation, movement, life. The Classical gems are beautiful, but I found the Minoan gems more interesting. They are certainly more ecstatically alive. I might wonder to what extent the classical Greeks really believed in their gods, but in the case of the Minoan seals I must say they really convey a sense of pagan worship, showing rituals involving bare-chested women holding serpents, little gods materializing above altars. The Minoans and Myceneans are farther back in time than the Classical Greeks, and their art conveys that primordiality, a spirit and attitude towards existence that appear strange to us today as compared with the seals created in subsequent periods. We recognize the classical; its influence is all around us. But the Minoans seem alien, even in the way they dress. The book itself is large, sumptuous, and brimming with over a thousand detailed impressions and photographs. Well worth the price.Greek Gems and Finger Rings: Early Bronze to Late Classical Overview

The World of the Rings: Language, Religion, and Adventure in Tolkien ReviewThis book was originally published ca 1980 as England and Always. I have not seen the original so I can't tell how much of this book is new material (beyond a chapter dealing with Peter Jackson's films). Lobdell has examined Tolkien's writings from several interesting and unusual perspectives. One of the most interesting deals with the influence of Edwardian adventure fiction (Haggard, etc.) on Tolkien. Another fascinating chapter deals with Middle Earth as a Christian world in a pre-Christian age. There is also a short fiction story in an Appendix which is meant to be a sort of parallel to Tolkien's own abandoned sequel to The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the Shadow. I enjoyed this story, though of course Lobdell as a fiction writer cannot measure up to Tolkien. (But then, no one can!)
I am a long time Tolkien reader and addict (since the age of 12 in 1969.) Most of the time I do not care for Tolkien "criticism" and "literary analysis", which to me seems to suck out the magic, but Lobdell's work is different. The World of the Rings enhances Middle Earth and intensifies the love I feel for it.The World of the Rings: Language, Religion, and Adventure in Tolkien Overview

Finger Rings: Ancient to Modern (Ashmolean Handbooks) ReviewDiana Scarisbrick & Martin Henig's book turned out to be a complete disappointment to me. I do not own any other books of either author but if this is any indication of what to expect from them on the subject of finger rings then I won't be buying any more of their books. I am a novice collector of ancient rings (mostly roman) and was hoping to find a brief history of roman rings and their symbolism. Given the wide variety of types to be collected (bronze votive types with their various numbers of dots that are supposed to invoke the help or guidance of either male or female dieties as an example) are not mentioned. A background of the various styles of rings and their symbolism would have been useful but all that appeared for the romans in their book was 1/2 page explaining 3 rings whose photos appeared on the facing page. I understand that the book was just supposed to cover a smattering of finger rings throughout human history but what you get in this book is brevity right down to the skull and bones of the subject. Any elaboration on ring styles and a background of their symbolism of the various eras would have made the book interesting. Having said this however, if pretty color photographs (there are very few per historical era that is covered) that are supported with very little historical information is your cup of tea then this may be the book for you. If the authors have some expertise in this field of finger rings and their history it would be nice if they would share it with their readers next time in some future book by elaborating in more detail. Attempts by other authors to cover this subject seem to deal mostly with the gemstones found on the rings and cover the gold and silver types. Bronze rings of the common man do not seem to be covered much in any book. In many ways the bronze rings would be of more interest in shedding light on the beliefs and aspirations of the common man on whose backs those empires were made. I predict that if there is a knowledgeable author out there who puts out a book on the subject of ancient finger rings and includes numerous photographs of the various styles that exist for each culture along with detailed explanations for them (so far as is known) the book will sell and will make alot of money. To date, there is no such book as far as I know.Finger Rings: Ancient to Modern (Ashmolean Handbooks) Overview

The Frodo Franchise: The Lord of the Rings and Modern Hollywood ReviewDVDs can be stamped out in seconds, while VHS tapes are slower to produce because they have to be recorded in real time. Time is money, and so the movie industry's movers and shakers acted decisively to all but eliminate the VHS format - by charging video rental stores exorbitantly high fees for the rights to offer VHS rentals and much lower fees for the rights to offer DVD rentals. Author Kristin Thompson (Honorary Fellow in the Department of Communication Arts, University of Wisconsin-Madison) traces how this and numerous other profit-driven directives have permanently changed the modern film industry in The Frodo Franchise: The Lord of the Rings and Modern Hollywood. Central to The Frodo Franchise is the story of Peter Jackson's celebrated three-film adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings", and the lasting impact it has had on cinematic and entertainment culture. "The Lord of the Rings" was utterly groundbreaking in that it was, from Jackson's initial vision, a commitment to three full-length movies to be released over a short period. Yet the success of the film itself is virtually eclipsed by the immense profits of the franchise label - toys, video games, movie-related books, collectibles, and countless other Lord of the Rings licensed merchandise. The Frodo Franchise examines this franchise phenomenon and its repercussions on modern cinema (where the real money to be made lies in a film that will spawn profitable sequels and merchandise, rather than one-shot stories), with especial attention paid to the construction of "The Lord of the Rings" trailblazer trilogy. Accessible to lay readers and cinema scholars alike, and illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs as well as an inset section of color plates, The Frodo Franchise is an utterly fascinating, completely unbiased behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" movies and their effect on both the body of Tolkien's famous mythology and cinema as a whole. Highly recommended. The Frodo Franchise: The Lord of the Rings and Modern Hollywood Overview

Target Tokyo: The Story of the Sorge Spy Ring ReviewModel research work (61 reference pages) on the ploys of Stalin's master spy Richard Sorge.
Sorge penetrated the highest power circle in Japan and had excellent connections with the Nazi-party through the German Embassy in Tokyo.
Prange proves that Sorge informed Stalin about the German attack against the Soviet-Union (operation Barbarossa) and that Stalin didn't believe him. That Sorge pinpointed the Pearl Harbor attack is for the author a myth.
Sorge got caught by the Japanese when his spy work became careless. He hoped that Moscow would save him through an exchange of prisoners, but his friends let him fall as a burnt spy. He was hanged. Only twenty years later Moscow admitted that he was an agent of the Comintern.
Excellent portrait of Sorge: a desperate soldier of WWI, who saw in communism the salvation of humanity, but also a hard drinker and a compulsive womanizer. The definitie book on Sorge. I agree with one of the rewiewers that this work is essential historical reading about WWII.Target Tokyo: The Story of the Sorge Spy Ring Overview

The Vanished Captain's Ring ReviewThe vanished captain's ring by Bambi Harris was the first book I choose to read not by force or for a grade, but sheer curiosity and intrigue. Not having a wild imagination I mostly watch movies based upon books to see the story. In the vanished captain's ring I found my imagination taken by Bambi's talent in writing. I imagined romantic scenes, action scenes, funny scenes and even embarrassing scenes that I thought I could never make up in my head. The characters were a lot of fun to follow around, but my favorite was chuck, Justin's grandfather. Hilarious guy. If this book were to become a movie it would have to be directed by M Night Shyamalan because the twists were that surprising. Absolutely enjoyed the book . :) Holly ReddockThe Vanished Captain's Ring Overview

Ring of Fire: The Inside Story of Valentino Rossi and MotoGP ReviewHundredths, thousandths of a second.
Inches, millimeters.
Winning, glory, life; injury, pain, death.
That's how racers exist, in tiny increments of time/space, pleasure or pain, paid (often hugely) to do things they love, at the limit of control, at up to 200 MPH. These activities are accessible only to few: life on the edge, embraced whenever a champion rides--in practicing, in races and especially in qualifying. No letup. No excuses.
As we learn (again) in this intriguing book, motorcycle racers are abnormal: top 1% in vision and reflexes; supremely fit; mentally tough, able to focus for sustained periods in superhuman ways; devastatingly, destructively competitive, driven to win at any cost; able to recover magically from adversity. For some, life is the price.
Broadbent, an experienced sportswriter (The Times, London) alternates between current contenders, focusing on Rossi but including all the principal racers in MotoGP, and the classic struggle between Mike Hailwood and Giacomo Agostini thirty years earlier, and Hailwood's extraordinary spirit. Broadbent had that journalistic essential: access to key people, willing to talk. He writes with lyrical ease (no photos).
The books describes MotoGP racers, scenes and records familiar to most motorcycle roadrace enthusiasts, with the welcome addition of rich `insider' anecdotal insights that turn these men into flesh-and-blood humans.Ring of Fire: The Inside Story of Valentino Rossi and MotoGP Overview

The Second World War, Volume 5: Closing the Ring ReviewIt is fortunate for us as readers that Winston Churchill not only had the qualities of a writer, but that he also found the time to put them to such good effect. Many a retired politician has written his personal memoirs-few of them have ever done so quite as completely. In the war, Churchill used secretaries to help him cover the multitude of daily tasks he needed to get through and afterwards, when living at Chartwell, his home in Kent, he kept up the practise of using an amanuensis instead of writing himself. This allowed him to get far more work done, since he could literally do it with his eyes closed. Nevertheless, we may feel sure that the text is his own. Proud man that he surely was, there is little chance that he indulged anyone in much editing. When we see his virtually unedited copy sent from the field from India, the Sudan and South Africa at the end of the last century, we can feel sure that by the 1950s, he was a competent composer of text indeed.
"Closing the Ring" is the story of the climax of the Second World War. Although he refused to admit it, Hitler probably knew deep down what everybody else could see very clearly after Stalingrad. The once mighty armies of the Third Reich were being forced to withdraw; some of the best divisions had by then been so savaged that little remained. Berlin was being mercilessly ground down to rubble by legions of British and American heavy bombers that ended up attacking their targets almost unopposed. It was the time when madness reigned in the Fuhrerbunker and when the Allies could see the fruit of their careful planning starting to ripen. Churchill was at once rewarded by the knowledge that he had been right in thinking America invincible, and at the same time he was sadly aware that an era was passing and the British Empire was fading away in front of his eyes.
This is a long sustained narrative, written by a man in full command of his enormous personal resources. In addition, Churchill had access to a vast quantity of documentation concerning the period, because he had written much of that too! Frankly, this is an admirable work of history, told with a writer's gift for spinning a yarn and I enjoyed every word of it.The Second World War, Volume 5: Closing the Ring Overview
