Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings-A Strategy Battle Game ReviewWhat a bargain!
This is NOT role-playing in Middle Earth - this is the rules for fighting skirmish wargames with the heroes and villains of the Fellowship of the Ring.
If you've already got a collection of suitable models to represent the Fellowship, plus a few orcs, elves and, of course, the Nazgul - just add this book and you can recreate the skirmishes of Book 1 of the Lord of the Rings.
If, on the other hand, you haven't got any models - then don't bother with this book - track down the boxed game from Games Workshop. It's about twice the price but it comes with loads of orcs and elves and men of Gondor - all in superb detail and no comparison to the stupid paper cut-outs at the back of this book!Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings-A Strategy Battle Game Overview

Lucky Starr & The Rings of Saturn ReviewThis volume is the eighth and last in the Lucky Starr series for teenagers, originally published under the pseudonym Paul French. A secret agent for Earth's enemy, Sirius, has stolen some intelligence and escaped to the moons of Saturn. Lucky Starr and his friend Bigman race to Saturn only to discover an enemy base set up on Titan, Saturn's largest moon. Somehow they have to return to Earth and force the Sirians out of the Solar System without starting an interstellar war. The story line in Asimov's novel involves the settling of an "enemy" of Earth within Earth's region of space. It's amazing how close Asimov was to an analogous situation in recent history. A short while after this book appeared, there was a revolution in Cuba which resulted in the Soviet Union having an ally close to the U.S. mainland. More moons are now known to orbit Saturn than were known in 1958; there are at least twenty satellites. In the novel, two moons play central roles: Titan, the largest of Saturn's moons, and Mimas, which Asimov (in 1958) states is the moon closest to the planet. However, we now know of closer moons. A photograph of Mimas taken by a fly-by probe shows a giant impact crater having a diameter about one-third that of Mimas. The crater, now named Hershel, has walls of about 16000 feet in height and a central mountain reaching up to 20000 feet. Just as in Asimov's novel, Mimas appears to be made up of mostly water ice, with 20%-to-50% rock. Titan has a substantial atmosphere, mostly nitrogen with some methane.Lucky Starr & The Rings of Saturn Overview

With This Ring (Regency Romance, Signet) ReviewThis was my first 'short' regency romance and my first Carla Kelly book. I enjoyed it tremendously. The writing is fluid (thank you!), the story is original, and the characters are believable and well-developed. I cried for the soldiers who died. The descriptions of death and disease as a result of war were simple, but so real that you can't help but feel it. But mostly I chuckled and laughed out loud at Lydia's thoughts and actions. And thankfully, Major Sam Reed is no cardboard hero. He is brave and compassionate, but also somewhat of a liar (for certain reasons, he tells his family he married a nonexistant woman named Delightful Saunders and had a nonexistant child with her and talks Lydia into marrying him to save his tail!). I highly recommend this book! Very original. Very well-written. I had almost given up reading romance after some rather excruciating experiences with a hero and his manroot and another hero who was over-sexed to say the least. Well, I'm off to look for her other books! With This Ring (Regency Romance, Signet) Overview

The Rings of Allah Review"The Rings of Allah" is a fascinating in-depth look into the world of radical Islamic terrorism. The technical knowledge of the author comes through in the minute detail of weapon systems and their use. The book, written in a chronological sequence of the development of the nuclear industry, gives the reader a detailed background of what we are faced with in the future. The plot was believable and the characters realistic as their lives were woven together in a tapestry of intrigue and human drama that pitted the beliefs of radical Islamic terrorists against mainstream American democratic values. The story keeps the reader connected to the real-life events as they unfold in a suspenseful battle to save America from nuclear holocaust. Even though this is a fictional plot, it is a must-read for those who are interested in what we are faced with from the radical terorists because it can evolve into a morbid reality. The ending is spell-binding and unpredictable, and will leave the reader with an unspoken sense of what can happen in our country if we don't take action. The Rings of Allah Overview

Wedding Ring (Shenandoah Album) ReviewWEDDING RING by Emilie Richards
Here's a book I would recommend to women who love to read about southern traditions and families. WEDDING RING by Emilie Richards takes place in the Shenandoah Valley --- Toms Brook, Virginia --- and centers on three generations of women that are learning to deal with each other and come to terms with a death in the family that occurred three years ago. Tessa McCrae had lost her only child Kayley in a car accident, and is still not able to deal with the emotions from this tragedy. She blames herself, and has shut out her husband to the point that she's driving him away, using the excuse of helping out with her grandmother to stay away from Mack during this particular summer. In the mean time, her mother Nancy has asked Tessa to help her with cleaning up Grandmother Helen's home in Toms Brook, and to their dismay they find that it's a mess. The term "pack rat" doesn't even describe the condition of this house.
The many different quilts that are found in the house help bring the bickering women together. Helen and Nancy open up their souls and tell the stories of their childhoods and early years of marriage with the discovery of each quilt. It's a side that Tessa has never seen of each woman and it changes her perspective of both of them.
The Wedding Ring quilt is one that helps unite the three women, and there is a history behind it. Tessa learns how the quilt was created, through the stories told by both Nancy and Helen, and it is a touching story. While the purpose of the title is not apparent from the start, by the end of the book the reader will understand how the Wedding Ring quilt is central to the story. The first of a trilogy of books called the Shenandoah Album trilogy, based on these traditional quilts, I found WEDDING RING a very enjoyable read. It's a type of book that will be enjoyed by women who like to read about family and traditions, in particular those families deeply rooted in the south.Wedding Ring (Shenandoah Album) Overview

Musashi's Book of Five Rings: The Definitive Interpretation of Miyamoto Musashi's Classic Book of Strategy ReviewI have no doubt about the author's sincerity in offering this personal interpretation of Musashi's original work, "Book of 5 Spheres" (or "The Book of 5 Rings"). The problem I have with what Stephen F. Kaufman has done to Musashi's book deals more with his implied suggestion that this edition is the result of an actual ~translation~ which he was responsible for (see pages xi-xii, "Translator's Note"). In fact, when asked Mr. Kaufman has admitted that this volume (and some others he has written) are not translations at all, but rather his own personal interpretations of English translations done by other authors--something he DOESN'T bother to communicate to his readers. The title of this volume, at odds with the "translator's note" on pgs xi -xii, is actually "...The Definitive _Interpretation_ of Miyamoto Musashi's Classic Book of Strategy". I fail to understand why Kaufman confuses his readers by mixing and matching interpretation with translation. It should be noted that Mr Kaufman himself does NOT speak or read Japanese, and in fact innocently named his own martial arts school "Dojo no Hebi" ("Place of Practice's Snake"), when he was trying for "Dojo of the Snake" (which in Japanese would have been "Hebi no Dojo", meaning "The Snake's Place of Practice"). Innocent mistakes yes, but one would expect a Black belt of the 10th Dan (degree grade) and a proclaimed "Hanshi" (master practitioner) to at least check his spelling with someone who _could_ speak the language he was borrowing.
Kaufman doesn't bother to provide a bibliography of which English translations he used, nor does he include notes explaining _how_ he drew his conclusions from the texts he studied. I am bothered by the fact that many of Musashi's original words have been heavily edited, re-arranged, or deleted altogether by this author until they have been removed entirely from their original context. In doing this, Mr. Kaufman has actually ALTERED the _meaning_ of Musashi's work! What remains appears to be little more than a new age self-help guide for modern martial artists which has retained a smidgeon of flavor from Musashi's original work.
A brief example illustrating Kaufman's tendancy to put his own words in Musashi's mouth is in the fourth paragraph on page 6 of Kaufman's book. Kaufman reworks Musashi's words regarding Merchants as a class to read, "Merchants are a ridiculed class because they produce nothing except profit from the work of others." Two other men who have actually translated Musashi's work from the original Japanese suggest nothing sinister in Musashi's original work concerning the merchant class.
Victor Harris in his translation of "A Book of Five Rings" offers: "The way of the merchant is always to live by taking profit" (page 41, 1974). Translator Thomas Cleary offers the same sentence as: "Whatever the business, merchants make a living from the profits they earn acording to their particular status" (page 7, 1993).
This is a minor demonstration of the differences between Kaufman's work and those offered by actual QUALIFIED translators--the translators make an effort to convey to the reader the actual meaning of Musashi's words in English, while Kaufman crafts a new meaning which never existed in Musashi's original work. Suffice to say, Kaufman's interpretation seems heavily influenced by his modern view of martial arts and his concept of what he feels samurai may have been like four centuries ago. It bears little resemblance to competent translations of Musashi's writings. Or perhaps it is Kaufman's guilt over his own attempt to exploit the expertise and writings of a respected master.
I recommend two excellent translations of Musashi's work which stay true to the original Japanese. The first is "A Book of Five Rings" translated by Victor Harris, a mechanical engineer and technical interpreter of Japanese language who not only practiced kendo (Japanese fencing), but studied this art in Japan for 3 years under Ito Kyoitsu at the Seijudo Dojo. A second recommendation is "The Book of Five Rings" by Thomas Cleary, another professional translator. Unlike Kaufman, I did not find translations by these men to be "intellectual exercises in translating Japanese to English" (pg xi). I found legitimate translations by competent translators who were clear and direct...I suspect most scholarly people, whether students of martial arts or not, will draw a similar conclusions upon comparing Kaufman's book to any actual translation.Musashi's Book of Five Rings: The Definitive Interpretation of Miyamoto Musashi's Classic Book of Strategy Overview
