The Use and Complexity of Sex Magic ReviewI loved this book.It drew me in and I didn't want to leave this world. The women characters were strong and well developed, the hero was hot! Loved the sex magic scenes.
Norfarland's adventures were funny and I loved the way it all tied together in the end. If you like romantic fantasy, this is definitely one you don't want to miss.
Thanks D.L., can't wait to read the sequel, so write! The Use and Complexity of Sex Magic OverviewThe Throne of the High King stands empty.' and so are the nurseries of the High Court Elves.A solution to both must be found before the magic of the Empire fails.Eioth, Lord of the North West, has found a very odd book sitting openly in a library. The Ring: The Last Knight Templar's Inheritance ReviewThe plot idea for this book is a good one. The beautifully designed cover and the blurb "the Last Knight's Templar's Inheritance" drew me in and I was ready for a hopefully well written Templar Treasure adventure. Wrong. Although the story idea was good, it unfortunately was not well executed. Parts of the story were written very well, other parts were written so poorly that I kept thinking throughout the book that it seemed like it was written by two authors. I have to also say that an awful lot of the story was very predictable which ruins the wish to keep plodding along. The issue I have the most complaint about is that the characters are so lame. Three main characters make up the story, three friends from childhood who inherit a legacy and are thrust into a thrilling hunt for the lost treasure of the Templar Knights. These three people have got to be the most immature young people I have ever come across. The dialog between them was so bad, the integrity of the main character of Christina was appalling, and there never was any deep character development for any of them. I cant say I liked one character in this book, they were simply shallow, sarcastic, and all had schizophrenic personalities that changed like chameleons. I would loved to have seen a more seasoned writer pen this same story. This author in my eyes is not accomplished or polished and it really came through clearly to ruin the story. I barely could finish it, many times I almost put it down, and in my eyes, the ending was simply not worth the overly long journey. Give this a big miss. In fact at this moment, for a very new book that was just released, I found it telling that there were so many many copies of it used for just a dollar or two. I guess no one wants to keep it.The Ring: The Last Knight Templar's Inheritance Overview

Five Gold Rings: A Royal Wedding Souvenir Album from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II ReviewThere's something irrepressible about a wedding of royalty. Even the most jaded of us is capable of maybe an 'awww' or two as we get to see a bit of a fairy tale come to life. There is pomp everywhere, from the fabulous gown and jewels that the bride is wearing, the wedding cakes and favours, to public displays of the wedding gifts.
This handsome little souvenir album is to commemorate an upcoming wedding anniversary -- that of England's Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who will have been married for sixty years, in November 2007. It is also a look at how Royal weddings have changed and evolved from fairly private ceremonies that were witnessed by close family members and courtiers, to now what is a spectacle watched by millions on the television and launching a flurry of books, magazines and various souvenirs from the pleasant to the grossly tacky.
The five weddings themselves occur in a period of time that spans just over a century, from 1840 to 1947, with the criteria that either the bride or groom would be a monarch of the United Kingdom.
The first wedding is that between Queen Victoria and her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, in 1840. Victoria had been Queen of Great Britain for two years when her wedding was celebrated, and public curiosity was intense as to who she would choose to be her consort. With the rise of new printing techniques, there were now ways that the public could observe, albeit from a distance -- there were special prints and panoramas that were printed to feed the curiosity about the event.
About twenty years later, the next royal wedding occured, this time between Victoria and Albert's eldest son, Bertie, the Prince of Wales and the future Edward VII, and his fiancee, Princess Alexandra of Denmark, 1863. Now there was the art of photography to add to the documents; some of these were hand-tinted to create a nearly painting like quality. The gifts were also more opulent, and this time, were described in a special magazine that supplied all of the details from what the guests were wearing to engravings that showed various aspects of the wedding service itself.
Thirty years later, another wedding occured, this time between Bertie's son, George, Duke of York, and his cousin, Princess Mary of Teck, in 1894. This time, celebrations and public notice were high, with various royalties from around Europe visiting to pay their respects. The gifts were put on public display this time, and admission was charged, with the proceeds going to a charity. The bride's trousseau was described in various ladies magazines in lavish detail and illustrations.
The fourth wedding was that of George VI and Queen Mary's second son, Albert, Duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923. No one really expected them to become sovereigns of Great Britain, and so the celebrations were not quite as extravagant as might be expected. But one notable addition was that this was the first royal wedding to be filmed, and soon there would be opportunity for anyone to see it, all for the price of a ticket to the cinema, and sitting through a newsreel.
The fifth wedding was in 1947, with that of two of Queen Victoria's great-great-grandchildren -- Princess Elizabeth, and Prince Philip of Greece. After the dreary years of WWII, and the troubles of rebuilding, London was ready for a celebration. The outpouring from the public was immense, and it seems that all of England took the day off for a holiday. The marriage proved to be one of the most successful in the royal family, and appears to be still quite solid after nearly sixty years.
Each wedding goes into some detail about the clothing, providing pictures and closeups of the brides' gowns, showing some of the intricate sewing and decoration that went into the making. As was traditional, all of the clothing worn were made from British materials and designers. What I found especially beautiful were the samples of lace and embroidery, often with monograms and special designs incorporated into the designs. A very brief history of the couple is also included, talking a little about their childhoods, and what happened after the weddings. At the end of the book, there is also a listing of what music was performed at each wedding, with a few surprises tucked in.
What may surprise you is what you will not find in this book. There isn't any mention of Lady Diana, or of the notorious wedding of Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson.
For anyone interested in royalty, and how what started as a private celebration soon became an opportunity for public celebration, this is a lovely, well-made and designed book. The photographs and pictures are unusual, many of which I had not seen before, and gave a sense of intimacy.
The author, Jane Roberts, is the Royal Librarian, and has compiled a beautiful little volume on the lore of royal weddings. For anyone interested in the English monarchy, it would be a nice addition to their collection.
Five stars. Recommended.Five Gold Rings: A Royal Wedding Souvenir Album from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II Overview

One Golden Ring ReviewLady Fiona Hollingsworth needs twenty-five thousand pounds quickly to free her brother, Randy, who has been abducted by Spanish bandits in The Peninsula. However, the family fortune is depleted. When she sees Mr. Nicholas "Nick" Birmingham, the richest stockbroker in England, she gets an idea. The very next day, Fiona goes to Nick's office and offers to marry him in exchange for his help. It is fairly well known that Nick's deceased father had always hoped his son would make an aristocratic match. Even though Nick does not believe himself worthy of Fiona, he agrees. It does not take the pair long to fall totally in love with each other.
Lord Edward Warwick, the Foreign Secretary, had grown up unofficially betrothed to Fiona. Yet last year he jilted Fiona to marry another, Countess Maggie. The Crown needs the help of Nick, his brother (William), and his money. Edward goes to Nick, hoping Nick's patriotism will force his agreement. It does, but only because William has experience in stealthy dealings. If not for his loyalty to his country, Nick would have refused. Nick could not help being jealous that Fiona had once loved Edward for so long.
Fiona has truly gotten over Edward. She is deeply in love with Nick. She is even growing to adore Nick's illegitimate, eight-year-old daughter, Emmie. But she is jealous that Nick keeps disappearing at night and fears he is going to another woman. In addition to this, it is no secret that Randy frowns upon Fiona marrying so beneath their station. Yet Randy may soon be forced to eat crow.
***** You say that you want dreamy romance? Then pick up a copy of "One Golden Ring". This has got to be the most PERFECT Regency Romance that I have read this year. I actually found myself envying Fiona. You will not find any stupid characters that you will want to strangle. These characters are intelligent and realistic. I have high hopes that a couple of the secondary characters will get their own stories told someday soon. *****

With His Ring (Brides of Bath) ReviewIf you liked Cheryl Bolen's first installment in her Brides of Bath series set in Regency England, you'll like this one. The heroine, Glee Pembroke, is the spirited younger sister of Felicity, the heroine of Cheryl's January release, THE BRIDE WORE BLUE. As usual, Cheryl gives her readers a realistic stroll through the Regency period and an indomitable heroine to root for--one who is not above sacrificing her dignity for the man she loves. Glee has her sights set on Gregory Blankenship, one of Bath's most sought-after bachelors. Readers of THE BRIDE WORE BLUE will remember Blanks as the best friend of Glee's brother George who is content to squander his money on gambling and loose women. Blanks has no desire to change his ways until his father dies, leaving him control of a sizeable fortune. There's just one catch. Blanks has to marry by his 25th birthday or lose it all. Glee tricks him into wedding her by the deadline stipulated in his father's will, but getting Blanks to the altar is nothing compared to the difficult task ahead--winning his heart. In WITH HIS RING, the reader sees the sensitive side of Blanks, a man who, despite earlier misgivings, finds himself strongly attracted to his beautiful wife, but who fears the consequences should they actually fall in love. WITH HIS RING has plenty of sensuality, a villain to make your skin crawl, and a voluptuous rival for Glee. Even if you're not a Regency fan, check this book out. With His Ring (Brides of Bath) Overview

A Gift of Love : Double Exposure / Just Curious / Gabriel's Angel / Yuletide Treasure / Five Golden Rings ReviewI normally don't care for anthologies, for two principal reasons. First, many stories in these anthologies suffer from being over-short; the usual 70 - 100 pages is simply not sufficient to develop the storyline in a sufficiently satisfying manner. Second, there is always at least one story in each collection which is disappointing and lets the others down.
However, I saw this book in, of all places, a bookshop in Manchester (yes, in the UK). An import, at a very reasonable price, so I decided to give it a try. And I'm delighted I did, having had several days of very satisfying reading from five authors, none of whose work I had read before.
These stories all have a strong Christmas theme, which is done properly, in sharp contract to many Christmas-themed books these days in which the festive season gets perhaps a couple of lines at the end with no other mentions anywhere in the book. Each story in this anthology *feels* Christmassy, in different ways. And yet each story is very different. There are two contemporary romances in US settings, two British historical romances (in the Victorian period, though again each very different), and one time-travel, again set in the US.
We have a modern career woman reunited with the childhood hero who devastated her years ago by a careless act; a still-grieving widow who discovers that the boss of whom she thoroughly disapproves has an incredibly romantic heart; a poverty-stricken young woman finds out how it feels to play the role of angel to a lonely widower and his son; a young Victorian choolmistress enters into an arranged marriage with a reclusive Earl so that his orphaned niece will have a governess, and quickly finds a way to melt his frozen heart; and a 1990s woman is transported back to Pioneer country, finding herself married to the man of her dreams.
I loved each and every one of these short stories. None - well, except perhaps the last, which ended a little abruptly - seemed over-short or insufficiently well developed. And each had its share of humour, angst, romance and heartwarming seasonal cheer.
Highly recommended!A Gift of Love : Double Exposure / Just Curious / Gabriel's Angel / Yuletide Treasure / Five Golden Rings Overview

With This Ring (Regency Romance, Signet) ReviewThis was my first 'short' regency romance and my first Carla Kelly book. I enjoyed it tremendously. The writing is fluid (thank you!), the story is original, and the characters are believable and well-developed. I cried for the soldiers who died. The descriptions of death and disease as a result of war were simple, but so real that you can't help but feel it. But mostly I chuckled and laughed out loud at Lydia's thoughts and actions. And thankfully, Major Sam Reed is no cardboard hero. He is brave and compassionate, but also somewhat of a liar (for certain reasons, he tells his family he married a nonexistant woman named Delightful Saunders and had a nonexistant child with her and talks Lydia into marrying him to save his tail!). I highly recommend this book! Very original. Very well-written. I had almost given up reading romance after some rather excruciating experiences with a hero and his manroot and another hero who was over-sexed to say the least. Well, I'm off to look for her other books! With This Ring (Regency Romance, Signet) Overview

The Talisman Ring ReviewThe Talisman Ring is a marvellous piece of comedy, high drama, farce, romance and wit. If you find Regency drawing-room dramas slow-moving, but enjoy the beautiful writing, and want something to set your pulse racing and your excitement on end - buy The Talisman Ring. If you love mystery, this book is considered by some to be Heyer's masterpiece from her mystery writing career - probably because it is not a mystery in the strict sense of the word. It is a late 18th century story of snowdrifts, misunderstandings, disguises, humour, murder, and stolen rings. The book is very romantic, with one of Heyer's most likeable casts - Eustacie de Vauban, the romantic, strong-willed French refugee, Ludovic, Lord Lavenham, refugee of justice, smuggler and rogue, Miss Thane, as sensible as she is romantic and inventive, and Sir Tristram, one of Heyer's sardonic dark heroes. With Basil Lavenham, the oily dandy, a charming innkeeper, his deaf sister, a couple of bumbling Bow Street Runners, and Hugo Thane, Justice of the Peace, this is a happy, very fast-moving novel full of the sort of corruption that the reader can forgive, and it is just the right length for a beginner. Younger readers, in particular, should thoroughly be recommended to read this book to introduce them to the world of Heyer and its high drama, stylised manners and wonderful language. The Talisman Ring Overview

Love'S Funny That Way (The Wedding Ring) (Harlequin Temptation) ReviewThe four women have been best friends since kindergarten. When they graduated from high school, they formed THE WEDDING RING CLUB, agreeing to find each other husbands if any of them are still single at age thirty. Little did they suspect just how complicated that agreement would become twelve years later.
When Raven Muldoon's friends introduce her to Brent Radley, the pact is set into motion. Sexy, attentive, eager Brent wants to find the right woman and get married. Raven has promised, as part of her pact, to date the chosen man for three months, much to her heart's dismay. Because when Raven meets Brent's younger brother Hunter, she immediately knows she's dating the wrong brother!
As a hypotherapist, Raven reaches tremendous conflict when Hunter becomes one of her clients. Despite her suspicions regarding the validity of Hunter's phobia, Raven proceeds in a professional manner, attempting to maintain appropriate distance. Nevertheless, her heart won't let her off the hook--nor will her oddball matchmakers.
Seeking to overcome her own phobia, speaking in front of large groups of people, Raven finds herself appearing at Hunter's comedy club. Soon Raven realizes that she has a real knack for stand up comedy. Yet her new boyfriend Brent is obviously absent during these midweek engagements, leaving Raven with his brother. Issues of family loyalty and morals leave both Raven and Hunter shaken.
This series has a fun, marvelously troublesome premise. Matchmaking notoriously goes wrong, and yet in these cases, that wrong makes such a terrific right! In January, I DO, BUT HERE'S THE CATCH will lead to the second matchmaking when Charlie enters a marriage of convenience. In February Sunny's story appears in ONE EAGER BRIDE TO GO, and twice divorced Amanda finds love in March with FIANCÉ FOR HIRE. As wonderful as this story is, I can hardly wait for the rest!Love'S Funny That Way (The Wedding Ring) (Harlequin Temptation) Overview

Five Golden Rings ReviewBoy was I glad that I found this book at a thrift store for $1, otherwise I would have been very dissapointed.
1st story: Fern Michaels - A Bright Red Ribbon: Alone in her car, a weary traveler becomes lost in a blizzard. But a dog wearing a scarlet ribbon will lead Morgan Ames to a safe haven...and into the arms of a most unlikely hero.
How did Fern Michaels get to be so famous? Sorry to all the fans of hers out there, but I think her writing stinks! This book reads like something I would have written when I was 14. I never even got more than ten pages into before I skipped to next story. I mean, a woman barges into a man's house, through a doggie door of all things, and he goes into a twenty line speech, (saying "Sorry I wasn't here to welcome you" - what? He's never even seen her before!) and at the end, he's already telling her that he has a warm robe in the spare bedroom where she can stay. Huh? Completely unrealistic. He's never even seen her before, and he's already going into details like the fact that he's got a robe for her. I mean, where's the, "Oh my gosh, as you all right? Where did you come from?" Nope, he just starts talking her head off. I read one other of Fern Michaels novellas, and also thought that it could have been written by a teenager. I understand that writers take creative liscence, but a story needs a semblance of realism. No stars if I could - one begrudgingly.
2nd Story: Kat Martin - Christmas Angel: Despite having been on opposite sides of the war, Yankee doctor Josh Coltrane is unprepared for the continued bitterness of long-lost love Angel Summers. Can these two former sweethearts learn to forgive and forget the past?
I had high hopes for this one. It has so many elements that I love: it's historical, a civil war story, and reunited lovers. But then I got to the part when some straggling Confederate soldiers try to rape Angel. Josh of course shows up with a gun and saves her. And what does Angel do? She begs him to let her attackers go, because "the war made them this way". Again, completely unrealistic. I guess the author was just trying to show how understanding and kind she was, but I just didn't buy it. No decent man will rape a woman, no matter what he's been through. They deserved to go to jail for what they did, but they didn't. That disgusted me so much that I again skipped to the next story. Two stars, since it started off well.
3rd Story: Jo Beverly - Twelfth Night: Lady Alice Conyngham was jilted exactly six years ago. Now, at this year's Christmas festival, she must face the scandal of years past and the gentleman to whom she'd given her heart.
One of the better stories in this anthology, and the most "Christmassy" one. While it's not one I would bother re-reading, it was entertaining. I liked reading about the old traditions, especially the game "snapdragon". Four stars.
4th Story: Katherine Sutcliffe - Home for Christmas: Virginia Valemere is barely handing on to her prized horses. Her father's desperate need for medical attention may tip her over the edge. Virginia's enigmatic new neighbor Dr. Neil Ellison could wind up being her hope for salvation, or her ruin.
Another so-so story which was not quite as good as the last. Good for one read, but not to re-read. Had the "small-town" thing going for it, which was quite pleasant. Three stars.
5th Story: Brenda Joyce - The Miracle: In a remote castle on a windswept island, an American beauty challenges a wild Irish nobleman...and finds that after innocence, passion comes -- and a very special Christmas gift.
Not a very "Christmassy" story, but the best one of the bunch. This story is written about two minor characters, Lisa Ralston and Julian St. Clare who appeared in "After Innocence". You do not have to read that story first (I haven't), this story stands very well by itself. Wow! No one can write romantic tension like Brenda Joyce! This was the first of her stories that I read, but it certainly won't be the last. This story was already printed in "A Gift of Joy", so if you own that already, this is a reissue of that same story. Five stars.Five Golden Rings Overview

The Marriage Ring ReviewI really wanted to give this book a five star rating, but the end of the book held me back. That's not to say the end of the book was bad (it wasn't) but I was hoping for more. The characters are refreshing and, even though they come to love each other in such a short period of time, the reader can appreciate what they go through together. I wanted this book to keep going and, as I approched the end, I knew it would be wrapped up too quickly. I would have really loved an epilogue...a letter from Grace to her friend Fiona (from Seduction at Christmas) telling of her marriage, or a look ahead to Grace's and Richard's married years...something that would have given me that extra satisfaction at the end of the story.
Other than that, a solid romance and definitely one I will re-read.The Marriage Ring Overview

An Affair to Remember (Talisman Ring) ReviewI should have realized when I read "The Seduction of Sara" (my first Hawkins book) that I was being drawn into yet another of these family series where you feel compelled to read all the books just because! The fact that she had 5 brothers should have tipped me off. While I enjoyed "Sara", I found some of the secondary characters more interesting than Nick and Sara - primarily St John family head Marcus (whose story will likely be last as he seems to be the most interesting of them all). And I was very happy to find that overbearing half brother Anthony's story would match him with his nemesis, Sara's unconventional best friend Anna Thraxton. I was not disappointed - I liked it better than "Sara".
Anthony Elliot, Earl of Greyley has "inherited" custody of the five unruly and mischievous children of one of his Elliot cousins. As head of the Elliot family, he takes all of his responsibilities seriously and they're no different. But dealing with them is more than he bargained for and several governesses later, things are out of control - a state of affairs Greyley cannot abide. And so in desperation he seeks out Anna Thraxton who has the reputation of being the best governess in London. If only there were some other alternative since he and Thraxton cannot stand one another. He finds her impertinent, disrespectful, opinionated, irritating and stubborn. Too bad he needs her!
Anna Thraxton was not always a governess and she misses her life in society very much - the clothes, the balls, her best friend Sara. But she and grandfather must eat, and so she must work. When Greyley approaches Anna about working for him, she initially refuses. She's always found him overbearing, heavy handed, arrogant, irritating and stubborn. Too bad he's offering to pay her more money than she could make in a year for three month's work!
And so, Anna and grandfather move into Greyley House where Anna begins to bring order to the nursery - and disorder to Greyley's peace of mind. Their often heated disagreements somehow end as passionate kisses. He's helplessly attracted to her eventhough he has agreed to marry another. And Anna is just as hopelessly drawn to him, but knows there is nothing but heartache down that road for he's an earl and she's a mere governess - and certainly no man's mistress! So it may just take the mischievous children, together with Anna's equally naughty grandfather to bring this situation to the end they choose - whether Anthony and Anna like it or not!
A really fun and recommended read.An Affair to Remember (Talisman Ring) Overview

The Ruby Ring: A Novel ReviewThe current vogue in historical fiction has led to an influx of novels such as The Ruby Ring. Their authors take truly fascinating and moving artifacts and stories (in this case, the apparent affair between Renaissance artist Raphael and baker's daughter Margherita Luti) and then use them as the basis for a novel. In some cases (such as Philippa Gregory's various novels about English history and Emma Donoghue's Slammerkin and Life Mask) the results are fascinating and inspired. In other cases, such as The Ruby Ring, the results are dishwater-dull recoutings of what might have happened if everyone in history acted like they were in a romance novel. I will discuss the plot of this novel, so don't read further if for some reason you fear having this book spoiled for you.
One sure sign you're reading a stinker is if the heroine is immediately presented as a paragon of wit, beauty, bravery and intelligence even though she is a mere girl of humble means. Often a parent (usually the father, in this case the mother) has impressed upon our lass that she is very special and cut out for great things. And typically she has some kind of unusual eye color, for some reason, though in this case there's an actual painting so the author must lump it with the classic brown hue.
In any case, here's how this love story of the ages goes. Raphael needs a new model, he seems Margharita, he immediately falls in love, after some ridiculous dillydallying on her part when offered what must have been the equivalent of 10K, easy, to pose for Raphael (I believe to show her feisty independence, even though her family is impoverished, so her hesitation seems to make no sense), she poses, they hit it, they fall in love.
From this point henceforth, which occurs early on, the vast majority of dialog between the two consists of "I love you, bella." "I love you, mi amor." (Sex ensues.) This does not vary over the course of the rest of the book.
There are other characters, of course, particuarly a cardinal obsessed about having Raphael marry his daughter (who is ugly and weird, unlike super!pretty!and smart! and just as noble as the nobility! Margharita.) Most of them are pretty interchangeable. Often they admire Margharita and think she is wonderful, unless one of them wants to marry/do Margharita or Raphael (handy!)
There is also much coverage of the politics of art and artists, none of which will be particularly interesting to most people who has read anything about Renaissance Italy before. It seemed to me that the author was powering through those parts so she could get to the next "mi amor" scene.
The writing is dull too. The author has a tendency to inform the reader of things that one could clearly pick up from context. "Oh, Raphael, you signed the nudie painting of me!" "Yes, mi amor, I am signing it because I am proud that I painted you in the altogether and you are my lady!" "Oh, my dearest love, but you rarely sign paintings!" "Oh yes, but as you can see, I did in this instance! Now let us off to the bedchamber!"

How to Treat a Lady (Talisman Ring) ReviewThis is the first Hawkins book I have read, but won't be the last. Chase St. John is running from his past when he lands (almost literally) in Harriet Ward's lap. Harriet's has problems of her own as the bank is trying hard to take back her family home and only her mother's bravado keeping them at bay. Harriet's mother invented a fake fiance for the lovely Harriet -- a sea captain with a ship full of treasure and laughing blue eyes, a face stolen from a portrait the mother once saw.
At first the deception kept the bank from demanding payment right away, but when the mysterious sea captain fails to appear, they begin to demand an introduction. Thus when Chase lands in the Ward household and pretends he has amnesia so as not to reveal his own identity and bring his famous brothers post haste to fetch him back home, the Wards decide to pass him off as the made-up Captain.
This was a very funny and warm-hearted tale. I loved both Chase and Harriet and cannot wait to find the other books that went before this one. I hope Ms. Hawkins writes fast! How to Treat a Lady (Talisman Ring) Overview

Stetsons, Spring and Wedding Rings: Rocky Mountain Courtship\Courting Miss Perfect\Courted by the Cowboy (Harlequin Historical) ReviewLet me start by saying, I hate to give bad reviews. It makes me feel bad because I'm sure the authors are very nice people who poured a little bit of themselves and a lot of hard work into writing their story.
Let me also say that everyone's taste is different. What I may not enjoy may be what others are looking for.
I will give you my individual star ratings for each story within the book.
"Rocky Mountain Courtship" 1 star
The whole thing was just too remedial for me. Felt like I was reading a Jr High love story. The story line was flat with no twists or turns. I never felt a connection to anyone in the book except for maybe Clara, who was pretty likable. I shuttered at the thought of Joseph. He was someone that didn't inspire romance in me at all....too naive? I couldn't wait to get done reading this section of the book. I always try to finish what I start, but if not of that mindset I would have skipped it.
"Courting Miss Perfect" 2 stars
This one was better, but again, a little flat. I did enjoy Travis as the man of the story. Brynn was a little too prim and proper for my taste. She was a bit of a coward and dishonest and her terrible secret was hardly terrible at all. It was better than the first story but then in the end I was disappointed. I don't want to give away what happens...but it was a real letdown for me.
"Courted by the Cowboy" 5 stars
I was starting to think that a three in one book just didn't have enough time to develop good character/reader relationships. Stacey Kayne fortunately proved that wrong and saved the day for this book. She was able to develop a real connection to the story. Constance and Kyle were both very likeable people, which to me is really key a good book. She had twists and turns and a wonderful ending that left me feeling satisfied yet longing for more. The only downfall was that it was over too soon. I recommend all of Stacey Kayne's books--she is amazing at what she does.
In conclusion...I thought I was getting a 3 for 1 with this book but actually got a 1 for 3. Knowing what I know now--I would still have bought it for Stacey Kaynes section.Stetsons, Spring and Wedding Rings: Rocky Mountain Courtship\Courting Miss Perfect\Courted by the Cowboy (Harlequin Historical) Overview

A Matter of Scandal (With This Ring, Book 3) (Vol 3) ReviewAfter plowing my way through hopelessly unimaginative, flat-ploted romance novels lately, imagine my utter surprise at discovering that Suzanne Enoch's latest release is a little jewel of delight!
Miss Emma Grenville is a lively, spirited and spunky heroine who knows her own mind and is not afraid to stand up for her beliefs. In fact, in a an era ruled solely by men, she has managed to uphold herself with carving out a career as a headmistress of a girls' Academy. However, her whole world turns upside down when an arrogant and dashing rake known as Greydon, the Duke of Wycliffe storms in and threatens her position as a headmistress and dismisses all her teachings as nothing but calculating husband trapping tricks.
Greydon is at his wits end, trying to dodge from attentions of countless simpering debutantes and their matchmaking mamas. So, when he receives urgent summons from his uncle in the country, it is none too soon for he is desperate to get away from London and its exasperating ton. Upon his arrival, he learns that his uncle's estate is in dire condition and desperately needs his intervention...However, in order to accomplish this feat, he finds himself dealing with one of the most stubborn, impossible creatures; otherwise known as Miss Emma, the headmistress of the blasted, dreaded girls' Academy. And the worst thing of all is that she's totally immune to his charms! He is the bloody Duke of Wycliffe, after all!...Women pursue him endlessly...so, what's amiss here?
What follows is an absolutely hilarious and engrossing regency romp, in which the utterly arrogant and rakish duke is thoroughly reeducated in female vurtues...and learns the folly of falling hopelessly, head-over heels in love with the only female who dared to defy him...
Although the central focus of the novel is the romance between the h/h, there are also wonderful portraits of friendship, devotion and the importance of loyalty.
For those readers that are already acquainted with Miss Enoch creative work, you'll be delighted to revisit with Alexandra and Vixen, the heroines of the previous installments of this trilogy - "Reforming a Rake" and "Meet Me at Midnight" - and their illustrious spouses - Lucien and Sinclair.
However, if you have not read these previous novels, it is not necessary to do so. "A Matter of Scandal" perfectly stands on its own and the characters are well thought out and fully developed. Although the previous two were also enjoyable, this one outshines them both!
Even though this particular plot line has been done numerous times before, in the clever and talented hands of this author, it exudes wit and originality. The story evolves very naturally and the reader is deeply drawn into it and effortlessly falls in love with both the hero and heroine. The passion and sensuality aspects of the novel are done with supreme taste and delightfully evoke all the senses.
Meet a score of delightful and unforgettable characters such as Jane, Lizzy, Tristan, Viscount Dare (whose story I truly hope is next!) and Georgina along with other significant friends, well-wishers and villains...
One point of warning, though: the constant antics and witty, humorous dialogue in this book will bring forth a bout of giggles, snickers and silly grins...So, if you read it in public, you might draw some attention to yourself :-)
I truly enjoyed this book, and I hope you do too. This one definitely goes on the keeper shelf!A Matter of Scandal (With This Ring, Book 3) (Vol 3) Overview

Meet Me at Midnight (With This Ring, Book 2) ReviewAnother wonderful read by Suzanne Enoch. The story is of Victoria "Vixen" Fontaine and Sinclair "Sin" Grafton. Sin was a spy in France during the war and had developed a horribly black reputation in England so he could fit into the role he played while a spy there.
He comes home 2 years after his brother dies to claim the title as well as find his brothers killer. This leads him to Vixen because he suspects a friend of hers, Viscount Marley. Vixen is incredibly spirited and is considered fast. She has no intention of marriage and all her actions point to her being what I term a "female rake". Sin and Vixen are attracted to each other and are caught embracing shortly after meeting each other in the garden of the ball they are at. Vixen's father, at his wits end with his scandal-creating daughter, insists on marriage.
They do and its a wild ride til they fall in love from there. Both are concerned with helping and protecting the other and will do what they must to ensure that. Vixen is not your ordinary heroine and she is quite likeable and Sin is not only sexy but a decent, honorable man who is having a hard time meshing his former "spy" life with his new titled one.
Sin's spy friends are amusing, Alexandra and Lucien from Reforming a Rake appear, and Vixen's menagerie all make for a great time reading this! Vixen's parrot, Mungo Park, is hysterical! I highly recommend this book!Meet Me at Midnight (With This Ring, Book 2) Overview

Reforming a Rake (With This Ring, Book 1) ReviewThe opening paragraph of 'RAR' sets the whole tone for the book. It also set the tone for the hero Lucien's character. He was witty without even trying and I could give this book five stars on the strength of his character alone. What an adorable hero! Looks, intellegence, and wealth. Heavens, what more could a girl want. Hey, he's also pretty darn nice too, even though he wouldn't agree. Did I mention loyal? Enoch really created one heck of a romantic hero here. Alexandra almost seems pale in comparison to Lucien (almost). But she too is an interesting character in a nicely written tale.
But 'Reforming a Rake' is Lucien's tale, I think. Some of his dialogue is just wonderfully witty. He believes Alexandra without question when she tells him what happens at her last position and the scandal that followed. If there was one thing I would wish to change about the book, I would like to have had Enoch attempt to restore Alexandra's reputation. She had done nothing wrong and I would have liked to have seen Lady W. bested. The old biddy!
So, RAR has a delicious hero, a neat heroine and a wonderfully nasty villian (that will surprise you). The two main characters really click, the writing is well done and the plot not too well worn. What more could a romantic reader want. Nothing terribly heavy here. And that's fine with me. Can't wait for the next book - this one about the Vixen. debbieReforming a Rake (With This Ring, Book 1) Overview

The Deception of the Emerald Ring (Pink Carnation) ReviewThe books in this series (this is the third) just keep getting better. To summarize briefly, the story alternates from the present, in which Eloise is researching English spies in the Napoleonic era for her Ph.D. thesis, to Regency England and the story of Letty, who becomes involved with one of these spies. Both are having trouble with the male species (and it's not surprising that despite the century, the contretemps in which men and women find themselves have not changed all that much). The author switches between stories with an amazing dexterity that keeps the reader turning the pages as rapidly as possible.
The book is full of dry wit, the characters are delightful, and the plot engaging.
My advice to the author: Do quit the day job and focus on writing entirely -- and give us more of these books, SOON!The Deception of the Emerald Ring (Pink Carnation) Overview
