The Lord of the Rings (Wood Box Edition): (wood box) ReviewDespite the fact that this is shown as being published in 2001, the copyright dates first from 1954. There is a reason that other versions have come out since this one: this one isn't good.
There are different readers for different characters, and some of the voices are really jarring. Frodo, to my ear, is completely wrong. In addition, it is poorly abridged. One of the most remarkable things about Middle Earth is how wonderfully imagined it is; all of the details are described so lovingly. Not in this version. Here, almost everything is dialog, so you are given little idea of what anything looks like. Some of the most cherished quotations (for me, at least) are mangled. In all, very disappointing. I remember hearing the BBC's dramatization years ago on radio and thinking it was wonderful job on very difficult material. I certainly wouldn't say that of this version. The Lord of the Rings (Wood Box Edition): (wood box) Overview

The Use and Complexity of Sex Magic ReviewI loved this book.It drew me in and I didn't want to leave this world. The women characters were strong and well developed, the hero was hot! Loved the sex magic scenes.
Norfarland's adventures were funny and I loved the way it all tied together in the end. If you like romantic fantasy, this is definitely one you don't want to miss.
Thanks D.L., can't wait to read the sequel, so write! The Use and Complexity of Sex Magic OverviewThe Throne of the High King stands empty.' and so are the nurseries of the High Court Elves.A solution to both must be found before the magic of the Empire fails.Eioth, Lord of the North West, has found a very odd book sitting openly in a library. The Use and Complexity of Sex Magic is a scholarly study of that most obscure, frequently derided and almost unknown branch of magic. For an Elemental Scholar of Eioth's rank and ability the exploration of Sex Magic begins as a simple exercise in curiosity ' soon it may become the solution to all the problems of the Empire. But first he needs to find one special woman.

The Sword (The Sword, the Ring, and the Chalice, Book 1) Review_The Sword_ is the first of a high-fantasy trilogy and is little more than a prologue for whatever follows. What I mean by that is this: in terms of actual plot development, very little happens here. Each paperback in this trilogy is about 400 pages long (1200 total), so this could easily have been a 2-book saga with little to no impact on its quality.
As for the story itself ... There are some books you can read when you're tired, some you can't, and some that just make you tired. At its best, this book falls into the first category; at its worst, in the third. The writing is clear but rough and unremarkable (much more telling than showing, especially where character emotions are concerned, not one clever simile or metaphor), while the plot is uneven and filled with numerous, extended chase and fight sequences that create a sense of deja vu. (Other reviews here describe the plot, so I won't, except to express complete disappointment with the climax, in which the hero saves the day not through his own talents but through, not just one, but two instances of deus ex machina.) Two sub-plot threads are interspersed with the main one; however, the female protagonists in those receive so little stage-time that one can only hope their actions will actually mean something later in the trilogy.
The book's one strength is its ability to keep you wanting to know what happens next, which is certainly a literary virtue. However, few to none of the other ones (style, plausibility, insight, etc.) are present here. I strongly recommend _A Game of Thrones_ by George Martin or _The Briar King_ by Greg Keyes instead of this (though this one does contain a lesser degree of sexual content, if not violence, than those very fine tales). That said, if you're looking for a fantasy book to distract yourself during a long plane ride, this one would probably work. 2-1/2 disappointed stars. The Sword (The Sword, the Ring, and the Chalice, Book 1) Overview

The Changelings (War of the Fae: Book 1) Review(From my blog, Word Vagabond: Supporting Independent and Small Press Authors)
Things are not going well for Jayne Sparks. High school's never really been a dream, and now her mother's creepy new boyfriend is causing problems for her at home. When her geeky best friend Tony pulls a gun on the school bully, running away with him to Miami actually seems like the most sensible option. But joining a group of other runaways for a secret research project will change her life beyond all recognition, and might even cost her the person she cares for most.
I liked the main character of this book from the very beginning. She has a fierce, strong personality, but a good heart. I couldn't help but be on her side. She also swears- a lot- but I found that amusing rather than annoying. Tony is an awesome character, too. The friendship between them is genuine, touching and funny. I love that they can have such a strong relationship without it being in any way romantic.
The pacing and suspense in this book are perfect. There's enough description to immerse the reader in the adventure, but not enough to get bogged down in. The minor characters they encountered were fascinating and really well drawn. Unfortunately, it's impossible to go into detail without spoiling the plot, and this is a plot that's too good to spoil!
I was intrigued by the other main characters, though we didn't get to know them very well in this book. I look forward to learning more about them in the next few books. I liked the way the character of Jared was used to create conflict within the group to add to the conflict from without.
This was an extremely fun, exciting, and original book. I couldn't put it down, and I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of the series! The Changelings (War of the Fae: Book 1) OverviewJayne Sparks, a potty-mouthed, rebellious seventeen-year-old and her best friend, shy and bookish Tony Green, have a pretty typical high school existence, until several seemingly unrelated incidents converge, causing a cascade of events that change their lives forever. Jayne and Tony, together with a group of runaway teens, are hijacked and sent into a forest, where nothing and no one are as they seem. Who will emerge triumphant? And what will they be when they do?

Lembas for the Soul: How The Lord of the Rings Enriches Everyday Life ReviewOne of the things I love most about the Lord of the Rings is how it has allowed me to share my love of it with other fans. This book is just another way to share that love. I read these stories and they all basically say the same thing - the Lord of the Rings has changed the author's life for the better; it's made each one a better person. In this world of decaying morals and values, it's refreshing to find people who so love a story that embraces goodness and 'doing the right thing even though it's not easy.' This wonderful book makes me remember that there's goodness in humankind. I highly recommend it for all lovers of LOTR.Lembas for the Soul: How The Lord of the Rings Enriches Everyday Life Overview

Dragon's Ring ReviewFionn and Meb are two of the most enjoyable characters I have read about in recent years.
A dragon with a heart and a mage who is not suddenly all powerful after 'finding out the truth' are very different heroes.
Fionn has been working for a long time to destroy Tasmarin whilst Meb was dragged into this plane when Fionn destroyed the first of the towers holding Tasmarin in place.
They travel Tasmarin as Fionn plans the final destruction of Tasmarin and Dragon's Ring is a fascinating read. Meb is a very likeable character who changes from a young girl to a mature woman who is more then a match for Fionn. Fionn is a rogue who is honest about his intentions to destroy Tasmarin to all who ask but no one believes him.
Along the way they gather favours from the many races who live in Tasmarin and finally connect them all together as Fionn prepares to destroy Tasmarin.
Read Dragon's Ring to find out how good a story this is.
Hopefully this will be only the first in a series about Fionn and Meb.Dragon's Ring Overview

The Return of the King: Being the Third Part of The Lord of the Rings ReviewThe Return of the King is the final part of The Lord of the Rings. In this last part the feeling of good versus evil reaches its pinnacle in LOTR. Tolkien gave incredible detail describing the War of the Ring, as it spanned several chapters. All of the characters are developed further, and for most of the TROTK, the story remains a two way split. TROTK has an amazing conclusion, and that is partly bad. Upon finishing the novel, I was sad that it was over, and I didn't want it to be over, because Middle-Earth is a great place to get lost in. You go on the journey that the Fellowship undertook, and feel everything that each member of the party felt. This is possible because throughout LOTR, Tolkien wrote vivid passages describing the regions of Middle-Earth, the characters, and what they were thinking. I read TROTK more slowly, because I wanted to stay longer than what the novel would allow. The four hobbits of the Fellowship become harden warriors, a trait that was virtually absent from their kind. Even though the novel finally came to a complete finish, it felt like it left room for more. It's to bad that there is no direct sequel, and while it answers most of the questions left from the end of The Hobbit, the reader can come up with plenty more questions upon finishing LOTR. Professor Tolkien did a work that was unexpected in its depth. He invented several REAL languages and writing systems, a complete history to back the novel, and created a wonderful world filled with diverse races and environments. Some fantasy authors may have tried to reach Tolkien's level in fantasy literature, but I am certain the The Lord of the Rings will never be duplicated. The Return of the King stands as the incredible conclusion of the greatest epic ever written. My only regret was that it ended. The Return of the King: Being the Third Part of The Lord of the Rings Overview
