Sparkle (Kindle Single) ReviewMade the mistake of downloading this at work... couldn't let it go til I was done.
Loved every word of it - I myself opted for a simpler engagement ring, I never understood the Tiffany craze or why a man should ruin himself on a ring... I prefer putting down money on a house. But that's just me. Or it's me and Mara Altman.
I had read "Thanks for Coming", her novel, before reading this and she never disappoints. Always funny, always witty, always uncomfortably honest.
Great read! I highly recommend it, whether you care about engagement rings or not.Sparkle (Kindle Single) OverviewLast fall, newly-engaged author Mara Altman rejected the showy sparkle of a multi-carat diamond ring, and chose instead a simple, three-figure bauble. But why? There began her reportorial journey to find the true connection of diamonds to marriage -- and to love.

The Use and Complexity of Sex Magic ReviewI loved this book.It drew me in and I didn't want to leave this world. The women characters were strong and well developed, the hero was hot! Loved the sex magic scenes.
Norfarland's adventures were funny and I loved the way it all tied together in the end. If you like romantic fantasy, this is definitely one you don't want to miss.

Harry Potter, Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings: What You Need to Know About Fantasy Books and Movies ReviewHarry Potter, Narnia, and the Lord of the Rings by Richard Abanes is a dissection of three of the greatest fantasy phenomena around today. Is fantasy harmful? Can we learn from it? Are there different types? How does fantasy affect us?
These are just a few of the questions Abanes answers in his informative book. As a mildly interested reader and watcher of fantasy, this book surprised me as it disclosed the impact that reading or observing fantasy can have on a person--especially a child or teenager. Yet parents are often very lax in supervising what their children read or watch, resulting in a decline in morals as well as an increasing interest in the occult.
Abanes compares the three above-named fantasies to show what each is preaching or teaching. With the Narnia and Lord of the Rings series, he shows how Christian values and morals can be taught through the fantasy medium.
With Harry Potter, he raises a few questions. Some in the Christian arena have said it teaches Christian morals. Abanes disputes this by asking: Do we have a clear-cut example of good and bad in Harry Potter? How can we call the hero "good" and yet watch Harry lie, cheat, and steal? What about all the occult spells and paraphernalia explored in the books?
In the last chapters, he shows how television and movies are delving more and more into the occult, including horror movies and even prime-time weekly television programs. "Children are big imitators," asserts Abanes. Many of the crimes being perpetrated today--especially by children and teenagers--are copycats of scenes watched in movies or television.
Harry Potter, Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings is enlightening while remaining highly readable. Abanes challenges Christian authors and pastors in a friendly way, but calls us all to be discerning of what we put before our children and grandchildren. ..Harry Potter, Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings: What You Need to Know About Fantasy Books and Movies Overview

With This Ring ReviewOn one hand, it definitely was a page turner. I was hooked to the characters and the story flowed very well. I felt what the characters felt; the good, the bad, and the ugly.
On the other hand, I don't know if I liked the ending. There were some loose ends that I wish had been tied up, but I don't want to put any spoilers.
I would recommend this book because, even after hours after putting my Kindle down, I'm still thinking about Amy, Sam, and Justin and I think that is a good sign that the author did her job in making the characters feel real.
Side note- I also read her book Betting on Love, and I enjoyed it was well. I can see myself reading more of her books in the future. With This Ring OverviewA Love for All Time . . .They came from different worlds. Then Sam's best friend Justin Malone enters the picture. Rocked by grief and loss, Amy and Justin turn to each other for comfort and companionship. A Silver Ring ReviewNathan has done an outstanding job of writing a story that anyone can identify with if they have ever lived. Of course pilots old and new will see the parallels of their own lives or of the people that they know through the always small world of aviation. This book even offers up how small the world of aviation truly is. Romantics will more than identify with the relationship side of this book between parents and kids, siblings, lovers, and married couples. It is a tale that I identified with in so many ways yet it was so different from my own life, and I believe most readers will be able to insert themselves into the book in their fitting role. The flying scenarios are very accurate and truthful. The non-pilot will be able to understand as good as the highly experienced aviator.
As a civilian trained airline pilot, trained by my best friend my father who passed away very prematurely, and now raising what promises to be a third generation pilot, I can recommend this book to all readers, but especially those with a love for aviation and the camaraderie that surrounds those of us so taken in by it. I only hope that Nathan has more of this kind of story to share with us.
Enjoy "A Silver Ring"!!A Silver Ring Overview

With This Ring: A Tabloid Star Story ReviewDear me! The good points about this book is that it can be downloaded for only $2.00 and can be read in a little more than an hour. I see that there are two 5-star ratings that have been written. Is T. A. Chase a friend of theirs? I found the writing puerile and totally lacking of any tension or drama. While sometimes nice endings are wonderful and there was one character (great aunt) you loved, this book is not even worth the [...] for a download. Sugary sweet is all it is -- and I generally love gay romance novels! With This Ring: A Tabloid Star Story OverviewThe end of the year is the start of a whole new beginning' A Tabloid Star story. Ring of Lies (Jewel of the Night) ReviewThis book boasts a multitude of interesting ingredients: two engaging characters who are perfectly matched, a priceless gem, several sinister bad-guys and a phenomenally cranky cat -- all in all, a great combination that makes for a very entertaining read. A fast-moving adventure plot, this story still manages to incorporate a heartfelt and honest love story.
When Ivy Michaels is called away from putting the finishing touches on her new restaurant to deal with the murder of her Aunt Fey, she finds herself embroiled in a mystery over two decades in the making. A safety deposit box key in her aunt's overturned, vandalized apartment leads Ivy to an envelope containing a collection of seemingly random receipts and some family jewelry -- and apparently leads the same men who ransacked her Aunt's apartment to Ivy. She turns to security specialist Dominic Riordan to keep any further intruders out. The attraction between them is immediate and unmistakable and, just this once, it looks like Ivy's luck with men might have changed.
But Dom has plenty of secrets of his own, and he knows far more about Ivy's new ring than he is willing to share. When it becomes apparent that the men who want the ring back are willing to kill for it, Dom and Ivy have to work together to uncover a long-cold murder and a cover-up that will have irreparable repercussions for them both.
Even though she has her fair share of flaws, Ivy is a very likeable character. She is warm and friendly without being helpless, and strong enough to be Dom's equal, both in fighting off bad guys and in their relationship. Her childhood with her aunt left her with a number of hang-ups about men, which become blatantly evident as her feelings toward Dom grow, and which slowed down the story a bit, but she has the courage to overcome them, and the bravery to do what is right, for her and for Dom.
After meeting Ivy's cat, it isn't surprising that she was attracted to Dom. Sergeant Pepper bites, and is generally dreadful to everyone but Ivy, with whom he is a big, loyal, fluffy furball.
When we first meet Dom, he comes across as bitter, arrogant and very, very angry, mostly with Ivy's godfather, congressional candidate James Brogan. Thinking that Ivy's relationship with Brogan is of a much more romantic nature, his intentions towards her begin as far more mercenary than romantic, especially when he sees her new ring and thinks she is involved in a crime he has tried to years to crack. It is only later in the story that it is revealed that he became a cop to solve his mother's murder, and that Ivy's godfather was responsible for getting him kicked off the force before he could do so. So, while his hostility and distrust are understandable, it took me a while to warm up to him.
Ivy is a perfect foil for him, however, and brings out his better nature from the very first. As his attraction for her moved from the physical to the personal, it became easier to see what drew Ivy to him and why she is willing to fight for, and alongside, him.
There is very little "mystery" in this mystery story. The answers to the main questions surrounding the ring are obvious to the reader long before they are to the characters, which makes for a frustrating read at times, especially when the identity of the villain lurking in the shadows is revealed in the first third of the book. It felt rather like, in order to get to the action, some of the opening scenes were glossed over, which made for some confusion, but not enough to spoil my enjoyment.
The book has the feel of a hard-boiled detective novel, with Ivy as an admirably competent damsel-in-distress and Dom as her hard-boiled detective heartthrob. The dastardly exploits that caused Ivy and Dom such trauma are neatly solved and their own relationship resolves a little quickly, but the excellent characterization and great sense of place make up for any structure problems the story may have. One can only say they put their crime-fighting talents to use, as it would be great to read about their future adventures!

The Ring of Water. Chris Bradford (Young Samurai) ReviewChris Bradford is an incredible author. Each of his books brings something new and fantastic. The dedication to the accuracy of the history of Japan and the martial arts is outstanding. My eight year old started reading the series when he was 7 and has read each book. He loves these books. I also have a 12 year old and a husband who thoroughly enjoy these books as well. They are fresh, intriguing, and riveting. The pace and suspense leaves you wanting more. My kids enjoy the Harry Potter series also, but without a doubt, choose The Young Samurai above all. I can't say enough about these books. You will not be disappointed. Ring the Change ReviewI enjoy stories with transgendered characters and Tanya's writing is good in that the story stands on it's own without getting carried away with superficial things such as clothing, makeup, etc. This would be good thriller even without the TG twist to the story.Ring the Change OverviewImagine the value of a personal protective force-field in a combat situation. Professor Standing had more than imagined it, he'd actually made one, or had very nearly completed it. The only problem was that of funding. The MOD had lost patience and the funding was going to be stopped, so the professor was looking at alternative sources of finance.Enter ex-Sgt. Curly Curtis, late of the SAS. The Silver Ring ReviewI'm not sure exactly where to put this work. It has a lot of elements of fantasy, but some SF, as well, and quite a bit of the thriller to it. A young man finds a silver ring, and once he puts it on everything changes for him. He becomes aware of a much wilder universe around him than he'd imagined. There's sort of a Tolkien meets Koontz vibe.
As you see with the title, the book is a novella and is a quick read. I found it very fast paced. I liked the human characters very much, and found the primary villain to be well developed. The revelations keep coming fast and furioius.
I probably would have given this five stars but I wasn't overly enamored of the ending. It's hard to end a work like this and the ending is perfectly fine. Maybe I would have just liked a longer work with more revelations about that wilder universe.
This is the first thing I've read by Swartwood and I enjoyed it a lot. As far as I know, it's his first major work of fiction. He's an author to keep an eye on.The Silver Ring OverviewDavid Beveridge is in the wrong place at the wrong time. When a gunman storms into a convenience store demanding money, he ends up shooting both the counterwoman and David. Only David doesn't die. Neither does the counterwoman. David is able to bring her back to life with the help of a mysterious silver ring he found earlier that night - a ring that the darkest evil in the universe wants for its very own. THE SILVER RING is an 18,000-word novella that contains a special afterword and a bonus short story. Praise for THE SILVER RING: "Robert Swartwood's THE SILVER RING is a full-tilt no-holds-barred bobsled of a ride, absolutely engaging and a hundred percent fun. If this one doesn't grab you, it's time to up your Ritalin." - Joe Schreiber, author of CHASING THE DEAD and NO DOORS, NO WINDOWS "In short, sharp chapters, Robert Swartwood's THE SILVER RING launches the reader into a high-flying, fast-paced cosmic adventure in which the fate of the universe rests in the hands of a seventeen-year-old movie clerk. Grounded in the emotional realities of an everyday family, Swartwood infuses his tall tale with the humanity of a young man navigating his way through the emotional minefields of everyday life while trying to be the best big-brother he can be. THE SILVER RING delivers light in the heart of darkness, and simple truths from webs of mystery. Have fun!" - Gerard Houarner, author of THE OZ SUITE and A BLOOD OF KILLERSBONUS CONTENT: excerpt from THE CALLING
