The Ruby Spy Ring: An Ezra Melamed Mystery ReviewThis book is like a regency romance a la Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer, only without the romance. Instead we have an intriguing mystery and the main characters are Jews who lived in London at that time, with some cameos by Beau Brummel, the Prince Regent, and even Jane herself. This book was well written and lot of fun for me, since I am big-time Jane and Georgette fan!The Ruby Spy Ring: An Ezra Melamed Mystery Overview

The Ring ReviewI really enjoyed the Ring.
15yr old Mardie Wolfe is struggling to find her footing. The book opens with her being driven home by the police after being charged with drunk and disorderly conduct. While on punishment, Mardie is forced to go to the gym with her step mother, Amy. At the gym Mardie discovers boxing. On that first night she simply watched.
"On the drive home, I smiled in the dark, tapping my foot like a maniac. I loved the smell of sweat and leather in the training room. I loved the sound of the small hanging bag going bip-bip-bip, bip-bip-bip, and the dry slap aganist the floor." (From ARC)
Amy helps Mardie convince her dad its okay for girls to box. Mardie takes to the lessons but boxing isn't a sport that comes easy. Even though Mardie's discovered the ring, the chaos that is life doesn't stop. She still misses her mom who died in a car accident. Trying to do what she can to please her dad. Living in the shadow of her lacrosse star, older brother, Michael. A boyfriend who wants more then Mardie is willing to give. A bestfriend who won't return her phone calls. Those are only a few of the issues Mardie must deal with, and yes its a lot but somehow the author makes it work.
The transtions are smooth, the storylines uncluttered. There is something about Mardie I really liked. I could feel her frustrations and self doubt. Mardie is far from perfect, she outs her brother to their parents out of jealousy. Now the Wolfe family must adjust to this new truth. Mardie spent more time training, getting the technique down then in the ring. There was something very honest and fitting about that. I really enjoyed the time Mardie spent with Kitty the trainer and the other girls. All the training is leading up to a tournament in Denver. Mardie lost her first fight, there are somethings even training can't help.
"But Dad didn't think I was good enough to come watch. I felt like I was right back in the gym, that night when Ben and Sam saw me in the ring. Huge, stupid looking gloves hung at the end of long skinny arms. I looked like a freak" (from ARC)
I think a lot of girls will be able to relate to that feeling of not measuring up. It's not a new theme but the ring is, this book tells girls its okay to put on a pair of gloves. The action in the ring is very good. I loved the sparring Mardie did with the other girls in her gym. The author writing is good and she avoids stereotypical pitfalls. One of the other boxers, a latina, Shireen lives with her mother and younger siblings. When Shireen is asked about her dad, my first thought was uh-oh. Will he be in A) jail, B)dead or C)never in the picture. I was very happy to see it was D) none of the above. Shireen's dad in the reserves and was deployed for the second time.
Pyron truly committed to Mardie. By the end Mardie finds her rhythm inside and outside of the ring. She can stand up to the other girls in the ring and to the classmates who mocked her, without her knees buckling. This looks like the first book in a series and I hoping that is the case. There is much growth protential for Mardie Wolfe and all of Kitty's girls. I look forward to reading moreThe Ring Overview

The Draejon (The Sirius Ring) ReviewThe Draejon is an epic story with compelling characters and rich descriptions of a world almost like our own, but not quite. The story takes off right from the beginning and doesn't let up. The detail of Morrissey's imagination is superb. Rusty and D'tanya's journey takes you deep into a search for their own identities while struggling with enemies, the Draejon, and forces that threaten the very existence of their clan. The depth of the story is revealed layer by layer. I was surprised by the complexity of the society and the inner/personal power that is the focus of the `magehood' . I literally didn't want the book to end. But I understand the Draejon is the first of a series, so - where's the next book???The Draejon (The Sirius Ring) OverviewIn the shadows of the millennia-old ruins of the Talla Empire, something ancient has awakened. Hours before dawn, a stranger's broken body is found at the edge of the village. Across the village, Rusty awakens from a nightmare. It's his sixteenth birthday, his Magehood day. Studying the Magecraft of the ancients has been Rusty's secret passion. Even so, working side-by-side with those who have shunned him is the last thing he wants to do. He plans to refuse the Magehood tests and take his chances on his own. Then an unexpected vision changes everything and Rusty is thrown into the center of the effort to track down and destroy the Draejon, a massive beast of prey that is destroying the harvest and killing anyone who gets in its way. Without food stores, few will survive the coming winter. While a small group loyal to the Elder protects Rusty, he and D'tanya must discover who they are and trust their new found powers to guide them on their path to the Draejon's lair. A stranger from the past sheds light on Rusty's extraordinary past just as long-buried forces reveal that a goddess is living among them. If the Talla Clan is to survive, Rusty must learn to trust himself, lead those who wish him harm, and recognize truth and hope in the shape of an enemy.

All Emergencies, Ring Super (Dead Letter Mysteries) ReviewMs. White continues to intrigue me with her creative writing styles. In this amazing book, she uses sarcasism to draw you into the life of Dana Coakley, a once aspiring actress who has decided to live a more normal life. Trading in her headshots for a tool belt she becomes the super of an apartment building. Wanting to help out in the community, she volunteers her time at a local second chance school. It is here that she runs into a student who will change her life forever. He gets her involved with uncovering the mystery of a fire that destroyed the building where he lived. Her snooping uncovers certain facts about the fire that cause her to get more involved. In the end, she winds up putting her life on the line to find out why there are so many people want the fire to remain a mystery. This book was a rare find and a joy to read. I hope you enjoy it because I truly did. The story will pull you into a whirl of interesting charactors and an amazing plot. Cathy's Ring: If Found, Please Call 650-266-8263 ReviewThere are never any easy solutions in the life of Cathy Vickers. After all, what does a girl do when she has a boyfriend who is immortal, a group of people trying to kill her, and another girl who has taken her identity? From the minute she walked into my life Jewel had been nothing but trouble. An ex-con named Denny (Jewel's wayward but good-intentioned brother) has risked his life for Cathy. Her best friend Em (techno-geek girl) is trying to protect her and re-make a fortune. And her father is supposed to be dead but isn't really because he is an immortal, so Cathy has to keep this secret from her unsuspecting mother.
This seems to add up to one plan: going into hiding --- most especially after she spends a night listening to the sounds of people being murdered right outside her window. When she sees the three bodies the next morning, she goes into "flight" mode. Now she knows for certain that Ancestor Lu (the Immortal) will stop at nothing to get to her, including probably murdering all her friends and family. Enough is enough already.
Once you make up your mind to disappear (she's done this before), there are practical matters to consider. First, she can't just tell anybody, but perhaps she can leave a vague note for her mom. Putting together her plan, she's going to:
* Need some cash (sell some of her dad's paintings)
* Not tell Victor (he will try to track her --- and besides, he doesn't really love her)
* Not tell Em (she will try to divert her with another brilliant business plan)
* Get Denny to drive her with the ruse of getting to Jewel (she does need her identity back)
* Find a way to destroy Ancestor Lu (maybe the serum?)
Cathy imagines her life with Denny --- he's the auto mechanic and she's the cheeky waitress working in some diner with a name like Flapjack Ranch. She could finally live without worrying about Victor or immortals or her mysterious father. She rationalizes several other things, nimbly sketching in her diary her version of herself as "Hamburger Girl - Cathy Sue," one of her alter egos. Cathy doesn't lose her sense of the absurd, not for a minute. And of course, even as she leaves to get into Denny's car, she is an artist extraordinaire, always caring about important details:
I stopped in the bathroom to brush my hair because an artist never stops thinking about how she looks.
The best-laid plans can go awry, and that's exactly what happens. Denny sees through her elaborate ruse and leads her back to a pancake house where "the gang" (Emma, Pete and Victor) wait. Cathy reacts with a flood of pent-up emotion:
Relief flooded into me. Relief and tearful gratitude and dizzy, knee-buckling joy. My body started to shake and I was crying after all, crying without tears, and for the first time in what felt like forever the crushing cloud of loneliness thinned a little and a ray of sunshine came in. Maybe my life wouldn't be a short, lonely, desperate chase with a brutal end after all.
The flood of euphoria does not last long because when Cathy goes into the bathroom, she is attacked by one of Ancestor Lu's thugs. Who saves her this time? Ancestor Lu's daughter, Jun, who happens to be an immortal but who also has an agenda (doesn't everyone?). Jun is a beautiful woman even when she is playing pool:
She bent low over the ball, cold and beautiful as a knife blade, sighting along the line of her cue. She went completely still --- her long hair glossy and black as if carved out of obsidian; her pale skin eternal as winter; her eyes as empty as stars.
Okay, so maybe here's some competition because it's obvious to Cathy that Jun finds Victor appealing. This is just what she needs...another complication in her life. In the time being Cathy doesn't know what sacrifice Victor has made for her, nor is she aware of what her father is plotting. All things are about to change again, and they are going to change really fast.
Picture Cathy and Jewel dressed up like clowns, picture Jewel in her troublesome way helping out, picture Cathy's father making a surprise appearance, picture Victor bleeding in a car (do immortals bleed?), picture Cathy and Denny kissing in a motel room, picture Emma knowing just when to step in...and then there's that serum. Cathy's witty comments, fantastic drawings, colorful, well-drawn characters, and the great storyline make this final book in the Cathy trilogy an adventure that will leave readers gasping. CATHY'S RING resolves some unanswered questions and brings others to the front. Just maybe Cathy and Victor have a chance.
Enjoy Cathy's package of goodies that go with the book, visit the website (www.CathysRing.com), listen to the music, look at the drawings, and call the phone numbers. What a fantastic time!

Sacred Ring ReviewWhen Kynan's parents tell him of their impending divorce he is angry and hurt and wants to lash out. His first reaction is to make mischief at a shrine on an annual school trip the very next day. But before he and his best friend Michael get the chance, a priest approaches him and utters a strange message in Gaelic that Kynan cannot understand. Fortunately, their classmate, Briana, overhears the message and translates: "he who holds the sacred ring from hate to love the will bring." Is it possible that this ring might save his parent's marriage?
An investigation that starts at the school library eventually leads the trio to the northern coast of Ireland to the archives of a church to a map and finally to an uncharted cave.
The story is full of adventure and mystery and danger. Kynan and Michael and Briana are well rounded and bursting with character. I was engaged from the moment I read the first page. Although the book is categorized as teen fiction, it is certainly likely to engage upper middle grade readers as well.Sacred Ring Overview

The Sherwood Ring ReviewLet me first dispel any misconceptions you might have. Upon first hearing the title, I assumed that this was a Robin Hood retelling. It isn't. This is a children's historical fiction, but in this case the history imparts a vivid backdrop for the story to take place. You never feel pressured to know overmuch about the events of the American Revolution (although your enjoyment will be enhanced if you do). History isn't a dry, weighty affair in this book--it's what gives _The Sherwood Ring_ its breath.
I've also heard this called a ghost story. Technically true, but each of the characters is vividly, blazingly drawn, undimmed by any ghostliness. Their purpose is not to haunt the present as echoes of the past. In fact, it is *their* story which forms the heart of the book, and I argue that you spend more time in the time of the American Revolution than in the present day. The appearance of those characters as ghosts only provides you with a chance to observe a delightful parallelism between *then* and *now.*
Throw in some romance. Not the soppy kind that you want to wring out, but the thoughtful kind between two well-suited characters that makes you want to cheer it on. There's a good share of humor, as well. Despite the presence of a war in one storyline and ghosts in the other, this really is not a grim book at all.
So: one American corporal, his normal arrogance dampened by desperation as he searches for a British conspirator who slips through his hands. The butterfly-deft woman who taunts him for his failure. His sister, quite sensible, but even the most clearheaded can get a bit muddled when caught in a snowstorm, and so she rides straight into her own share of problems. And a hunted man, showing off his cleverness to supposedly win his uncle's approval, but when he runs into the object of his true desire, he decides to go after what he really wants.
And as Peggy meets each of them and becomes entranced by listening to their lives, so will you. Caught in Pope's clear, strong prose, this tale is a definite read for both children and older readers. The Sherwood Ring Overview

Ring of Earth 4 (Young Samurai) ReviewMy 12 year old son wasn't a big reader but he's been involved in the martial arts since he's about 5. Trying to figure out a way to get him to read more, I started purchasing the Young Samurai series as they come out and he's been devouring them. I have to admit, I have to. He'll read to me out loud at night and he's even introduced to Japanese words / terminology. This is a great series that keeps he and I interested and eager for the next one to come out.Ring of Earth 4 (Young Samurai) Overview

The Silver Ring ReviewI'm not sure exactly where to put this work. It has a lot of elements of fantasy, but some SF, as well, and quite a bit of the thriller to it. A young man finds a silver ring, and once he puts it on everything changes for him. He becomes aware of a much wilder universe around him than he'd imagined. There's sort of a Tolkien meets Koontz vibe.
As you see with the title, the book is a novella and is a quick read. I found it very fast paced. I liked the human characters very much, and found the primary villain to be well developed. The revelations keep coming fast and furioius.
I probably would have given this five stars but I wasn't overly enamored of the ending. It's hard to end a work like this and the ending is perfectly fine. Maybe I would have just liked a longer work with more revelations about that wilder universe.
This is the first thing I've read by Swartwood and I enjoyed it a lot. As far as I know, it's his first major work of fiction. He's an author to keep an eye on.The Silver Ring OverviewDavid Beveridge is in the wrong place at the wrong time. When a gunman storms into a convenience store demanding money, he ends up shooting both the counterwoman and David. Only David doesn't die. Neither does the counterwoman. David is able to bring her back to life with the help of a mysterious silver ring he found earlier that night - a ring that the darkest evil in the universe wants for its very own. THE SILVER RING is an 18,000-word novella that contains a special afterword and a bonus short story. Praise for THE SILVER RING: "Robert Swartwood's THE SILVER RING is a full-tilt no-holds-barred bobsled of a ride, absolutely engaging and a hundred percent fun. If this one doesn't grab you, it's time to up your Ritalin." - Joe Schreiber, author of CHASING THE DEAD and NO DOORS, NO WINDOWS "In short, sharp chapters, Robert Swartwood's THE SILVER RING launches the reader into a high-flying, fast-paced cosmic adventure in which the fate of the universe rests in the hands of a seventeen-year-old movie clerk. Grounded in the emotional realities of an everyday family, Swartwood infuses his tall tale with the humanity of a young man navigating his way through the emotional minefields of everyday life while trying to be the best big-brother he can be. THE SILVER RING delivers light in the heart of darkness, and simple truths from webs of mystery. Have fun!" - Gerard Houarner, author of THE OZ SUITE and A BLOOD OF KILLERSBONUS CONTENT: excerpt from THE CALLING

Real Mermaids Don't Wear Toe Rings ReviewMy Thoughts: Real Mermaids was a purely cute read! We are introduced to Jade who is 13 years old. She has a best friend named Cori who she likes to share everything with. She lives with her dad. Her mom died a year ago and she's been missing her ever since.
Jade likes a boy named Luke. This is a somewhat new crush. He comes back into town after being away for a while. The thing is, he used to make fun of her for a while, or at least she thought so, calling her scissor lips. He comes back with nice hair, a killer tan, and really cute.
Jade gets her first period and its quite a funny situation. If I was in Jade's position and didn't know much about what would happen, I would have been really nervous and embarrassed too!
One night while Jade is in the bathtub she falls asleep and wakes up with a tail. What is going on? Is she a mermaid? Read the book to find out!
Overall: This was a cute book. It didn't have much real depth to it. Just a sweet read. It felt more like a tween book than teen. No real substance to it besides just the fun factor. Still a cute read though. I liked Luke, I liked Cori, I liked the storyline. I'll definitely read the next book in the series though!
Cover: Like it. Love the colors and its actually really cute.
