J.R.R. Tolkien Collection (The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, Four Volume Set) ReviewThere have been innumerable depictions of JRR Tolkien's works in various media, but I feel that few would have met with the Professor's approval. The JRR Tolkien Collection created by BBC Radio is a rare exception. The radio dramatizations of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and the shorter works (Farmer Giles of Ham, Leaf by Niggle, Smith of Wootton Major, and The Adventures of Tom Bombadil) collected in Tales From the Perilous Realm have all been collected in this beautiful box set of 21 CDs with 20 hours of material. As a bonus the very fine JRR Tolkien: An Audio Portrait, which contains some of Tolkien's own interviews, has been included as well.
I just received this set for Christmas and I've just begun to enjoy them by dipping into the various CDs and listening to small bits and pieces. I anticipate many happy hours with them through the coming years. The acting and presentation is superbly done, and the listener recognizes that the production had to have been put together by people who were not only familiar with but deeply admiring of Tolkien's works.
I suppose what I like most about these radio dramatizations is that of necessity the listener must use his or her own imagination, and thus each person's experience of them will be almost as deeply individual as it is when actually reading the stories. In my opinion that's the best and indeed the only way to really appreciate Tolkien, and I think the Professor himself would agree.J.R.R. Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch (Book 1) ReviewWow! What a fun read! The author really has a winner here. If you're looking for a fun romp through a magical world, then look no further. In this book, the author has put an original spin on the essence of magical powers, giving the story a fresh new twist. He also manages to blend the real and magical worlds in a unique way which helps you identify more closely with the main characters: they truly are as real as you and me (no need for a prized lineage or a high midi-chlorian blood count!). If you have kids who don't like to read, hand them this book. They will more than likely change their minds! Is this the next Harry Potter? Who knows, it certainly could be. Although it is a fun book for young and old alike, and full of magic, one thing it is NOT is "another" Harry Potter. This is a truly original story and a lot of fun to read. Once you start, and your internal movie projector gets going, you will quickly get attached to the characters and won't want to put the book (or should I say kindle?) down. There is one down side however: it appears we'll have to wait over a year for the next book! In the meantime, grab a copy, enjoy it, and spread the word!Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch (Book 1) OverviewThis first book in what promises to be a great new series is a very engaging and entertaining novel in the fantasy genre. Guaranteed to entertain kids and adults alike, this book would be particularly memorable to enjoy as a family. The author's distinctive take on his magical and mystical world is unique, refreshing, and fun. The whimsical tale begins with two wizards battling it out over a supreme magical force which the evil and power-hungry one covets. Although injured in the fight, the magical essence manages to escape. It is accidentally transported off its home planet of Eldora and makes its way to Earth where, unbeknownst to the 16 year old Dylan Murphy, it merges with his body in order to heal and survive. Strange and wonderful things begin to happen as the unsuspecting young boy from Colorado begins to inadvertently invoke extraordinary new magical abilities from within. The evil sorcerer soon locates the magical essence, and deploys his minions to retrieve his prize. Opposing forces from the kingdom of Colabra are dispatched to protect the boy and the magical entity now living inside him. Before they know it, Dylan and a small group of friends are whisked away to the enchanted planet of Eldora and find themselves in a struggle to save each other and the planet from a powerful wicked foe. Full of action, adventure, and enchantment, this story takes you on a delightful ride across very real venues in the state of Colorado as well as some unique, beautiful, and strange lands on Eldora. If you enjoy fantasy books, you'll quickly become a Dylan fan as you accompany him and his friends on this incredible, supernatural journey.

Terrestria Chronicles -- The Sword, the Ring, and the Parchment ReviewAbout a year and a half ago, my then 10 year old son, bought these books with his own money because they sounded like something he would like. (Knights and castles) He was raving about how wondererful they were and read the whole series in less than a week. My husband, wondering what all the "fuss" was about decided to read "The Sword, the Ring and the Parchment" too. He was so impressed and too, went on to read all 7 books, and recommended that I do too. I don't have tons of time to read, being a homeschool mom of 6 children, but I read every one of the books in the Terrestria Chronicles and was so blown away at not only how wonderfully written they were, but how incredibly they were able to explain our spiritual walk with God and encourage me in my own personal relationship with Him.
Another great plus, or maybe THE best part, is that, having read them, we are able to use the books to refer to when explaining spiritual truths to our children. That has been so neat. I can say, "Remember Prince Josiah when he did......" and they can immediately relate and understand what I'm trying to show them.
These books are worth their weight in gold. You will never regret this purchase!!! If your children love knights and castles, they will love these books. They are not just for boys though, either. My 7yo "girly" daughter begs me to read another chapter. It even keeps my 5yo's attention. Thank you Mr Dunlop for allowing God to work through you. These books, in my opinion, are much better than even Pilgrim's Progress!Terrestria Chronicles -- The Sword, the Ring, and the Parchment Overview

The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings (4 Volume Box Set) ReviewThis review is for regular size paperback only, as far as the books themselves, of course they're classics. Unfortunately Amazon links their reviews to multiple versions of the same product (meaning you can write a review for an audio book and that same review show up on a paperback edition of the same title. It's really bad for music reviews, let me tell you!).
If you should by this edition of HOBBIT/LOTR really depends on what you what for your money. I first purchased trade paperback editions of THE LORD OF THE RINGS back in the early to mid nineties. They're nice and more portable than, perhaps, other editions of the book if you looking for some quick reading on the beach/airport/wherever and they're economical.
However, these editions tend of have more misprints, are not as sturdy as other editions of Tolkien's classic texts, and the maps are just hell to look at. As any regular size paperback they are not as hardy as other, better found bound books.
The oversize paperback editions are better, but overall the books do not hold up as well or are durable as hard back editions. If you do want to read the stories though without having to worry about the shape the books are in then the regular paperbacks would be the way to go, as (for me anyway) I want to keep the nicer editions in relatively clean condition.
Given Tolkien's status of one of the world's most popular writers, I would recommend picking up nicer editions of these works anyway, as you can get them at reasonable prices and they are much better purchases than the paperback box sets. The only real drawback is there is no general uniformity between the editions of THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS that I recommend, if that is important to you.
Douglas A. Anderson's THE ANNOTATED HOBBIT, is the definitive text of THE HOBBIT, has numerous textual annotations and examines in complete detail all the different revisions Tolkien made to the work in the subsequent decades after its initial publication in 1937.
For THE LORD OF THE RINGS, the most accurate text is the 50th Anniversay edition prepared by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. I have the one volume oversize paperback edition of LOTR and am quite pleased with it.
The only way I would recommend purchasing the boxset of these books is if they published The Annotated Hobbit and the 50th Annivesary LOTR text as a uniform set as those are the definitive versions, and personally I'd prefer to see all four volumes hardbound. I don't think I've seen a hardbound version box set of all four works, though there are plenty to be had of LOTR.
In summary, unless you are wanting cheap editions of these books, you will be better served by purchasing other editions of Tolkien's books

As that was only in regards to these actual editions of Tolkien's work and not reviews of the books themselves, I am also including my separate reviews I have written for Amazon of THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Also included is an abandoned review I wrote for THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING all the way back in early 2000 but was never posted on Amazon, explaining how Tolkien's life work of THE LORD OF THE RINGS is NOT a trilogy but rather three parts of one work divided up for publishing purposes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE HOBBIT Review - Inferior to THE LORD OF THE RINGS? I think not! No, just different!, April 7, 2000
The biggest problem with this novel is perception. Tolkien wrote this story for children; to be more specific, this was written for HIS children. There were several stories like this, but it was this, The Hobbit, that was his master achievement in children's literature.
The Lord of the Rings ( a single epic, NOT a trilogy) was written to cash in on The Hobbit's success. Tolkien wanted to get on with the more serious work of his mythology, and ultimately that is what happened with The Lord of the Rings. It became attached to his mythology, and became as important to him as The Silmarillion.
So delineation is required if you want to read this. Do not go in with the thought that The Hobbit is a "precursor" or any such nonsense to The Lord of the Rings. Think of it like you would think of any other children's classics: children's classics. If you take it on The L. R.'s terms, this is a failure, primary because it is not written to be like that. But, on the flipside, The L. R. is as much a failure in children's fiction. It is not children's fiction, it is epic fantasy, and one should not equate it with children's fiction. That is EXACTLY what people try to do with The Hobbit. They try to put it in the same type of genre or playing field as The L. R. They are both masterpieces, and I love them both dearly. But one is for children, the other with adults.
Of course, Tolkien is part of the problem. How many books do you know that is a children's book and has an adult sequel? Not very many. The Hobbit, scarcely 300 pages, was written and published in the children's market. He then talked to his publishers, and they wanted a sequel. So he began "the new Hobbit", as C. S. (Jack) Lewis so aptly put it. He was preoccupied with his mythology, and the sequel was drawn into it. So we have two works, spanning two different genres, and as far as surface connections go its little more than prequel/sequel. Instead of looking at The Hobbit as a prequel, a precursor to his ADULT masterpiece, an inferiour version, think of as his CHILDREN'S masterpiece. The Hobbit is top of the class in children's fiction, one of the few contenders against such other great children's works as Narnia and Wrinkle in Time. The Lord of the Rings, likewise, is THE crowning masterpiece of the fantasy genre, of which its influence is incalculable to that fantasy market. Both are as important as the other, just in different fields.
I haven't talked about The Silmarillion much. I have already reviewed it, so I won't go real in-depth here. But the same thing happened with it. People, expecting another Lord of the Rings, were inevitably disappointed with the Biblical style of the published version. If Tolkien wrote that book out in narrative form as he did Lord of the Rings, it would be ten times longer than Lord of the Rings. The biggest problem with Tolkien is people have to many preconceptions that are incorrect.
So, basically, in conclusion, think of it like this:
1. The Hobbit - Children's masterpiece. He scores big with this one.
2. The Lord of the Rings - a single fantasy, not a trilogy. (Tolkien was always quick to point that out). The Crowning achievement of modern fantasy.
3. The Silmarillion - the Bible of Middle-earth. Much more for students of his work than the causal reader.

The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
***** Despite vehement critical hostility, Tolkien is among our most important writers because the way he handles Myth, 26 Sep 2007
Over the past several decades, THE LORD OF THE RINGS has sold millions of copies and is commonly regarded as one of the most influential fantasy novels ever published. Many first time readers have began their trek into Middle-earth with Frodo and the Company of the Ring in recent years. What they will encounter there has been loved by millions of readers before them, and if they allow themselves to respond to Tolkien and his Myth will doubtless become a loyal and ardent fan of Tolkien and those furry-footed hobbits. What's also notable about THE LORD OF THE RINGS is, for a book as long as it is, many of its readers reread the novel many times over. Yet despite its enduring popularity, Tolkien is often held in complete disregard by the literary establishment.
The real question is why? In the literary climate that is characterized by modernism and post-modernism where the twentieth and twenty first century is a wasteland why does a "series" of fantasy novels become one of the most beloved works in modern times?
It's because the power of myth over the human imagination works wonders, creating a longing and a hunger that, Tolkien argues, is met by the Christian religion. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis are the flip-sides of the same coin, with Lewis giving us accounts of the longing and Tolkien providing the books that would create that longing. And what about the longing? It's that longing for Myth, that love for those beauties which Tolkien shows us in THE LORD OF THE RINGS. It's that longing that sets man apart from all other creatures in the universe: a craving for beauty and for joy. The German word for this longing is "senhsucht". In a time characterized by fast-food, cell-phones, materialism, superficiality, the account of a Hobbit working against all odds in a mythic landscape so captures the human imagination (and this is NOT hype) that an entire genre is created. It is because of how Tolkien so masterfully handles Myth that he has been so highly treasured by such a large fan base.
Still, there are a few things to consider when reading Tolkien nowadays. Looking over the reviews, it proved rather shocking to me that people have been complaining that, although it was original when it was published, much of what Tolkien has done has become cliche and that other writers are much better working with these cliches and making them more exciting than Tolkien. They complain about his "endless descriptions" of the natural world, very detailed accounts of geography and not enough "characterization." The characters are unrealistic: the "human drama" required by the book's very nature is beyond Tolkien's scope as a writer. The Lord of the Rings - Part I - The Fellowship of the Ring ReviewMost people coming to this review already have a good idea what the story is all about from either other readers or people who have seen the movies made from this three part story. This is not a trilogy the three-part story so you can buy the individual books but it might be prudent to buy all three at the same time or a combined volume.
The reason I say buy the complete "Lord of the Rings" now is that you will just be picking up speed and getting everything straight in your mind and you will come to the end of this volume. Talk about a cliffhanger. This animal leaves you with several.
Even though the adventure takes place six years after the adventures in Tolkien's "the Hobbit or There and Back Again", the writing style is also a little more in-depth.
I am not going to paraphrase the story. J.R.R. Tolkien himself tells you what you need to know in the prolog.
Many people have read things into this story thinking it was maybe an allegory of things like the bomb; but Tolkien says himself that this is not an allegory.
Tolkien creates a rich world in which you the reader will feel you are part of the adventure. If you've only seen the movies than you've only seen a synopsis and you will not be disappointed in this book. The Lord of the Rings - Part I - The Fellowship of the Ring Overview

Shadow and Flame (Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game) ReviewThe other rewiew took the words right out of my mouth. This book is amazing. In my opinion its the best so far. I got the book today and finished it a few hours later and immediatly knew I have to write a review about it.
In book 11 of the Cirque Du Freak series (or the saga of Darren Shan) time has passed since Harkat and Darrens journey in book 10. Now working at the cirque where does the luck of the vampires lead him? Back to his home town! Darren is faced with difficult decicions, familiar friends, horrible truths, death and shocking events that will make you wish book 12 was already out!
I highly recommend this book.

Ring Of Daggers ReviewI love being able to download a book for a few bucks and be reading it within minutes. This was my enjoyment book I read these last few days, while spending the rest of my time reading books for finals, and it was a fun escape from the rest of the academic readings.
Lots of intrigue and apocalyptic mysteries to be solved. Lots of puzzles within the book; kind of like a Middle-East Da Vinci code-ish type of book, sort of. It's hard to figure out what to say, without giving things away. Good book for those interested in 2012, biblical, or doomsday scenarios. The whole book is really just a puzzle, trying to figure things out; lot's of history in the book, too; like Da Vinci code, so you feel like you're learning a little something while you read.
There was one thing that was pretty cool--and I hope I'm not spoiling anything--but at the end, the author mentions that there was a puzzle hidden within the book and whoever solves it gets a prize. So I actually thought that was really cool, and I'm working on solving the puzzle now.Ring Of Daggers OverviewDavid Nelson, a soft-spoken but principled maths teacher from an obscure boarding school in the north-west of England, finds an intriguing and ancient artefact while in Paris.Follow David on a perilous international quest as his research transforms legend into history, uncovering the far-reaching plot of a small group of zealots hell-bent on revenge. Will he be able to solve the centuries-old arcanum of the Doomsday Calendar and prevent a disaster of Biblical proportions?

Pollen and the Ring of Harmony ReviewI never do reviews but after reading, "Pollen and the Ring of Harmony", I wanted to say something about this very special book. It made me realize the great damage we are doing to our planet and if we don't change the way we are treating it we will loose this special place. I am not a reader but I read this book in one night and that is a first for me. This book somehow changed me into being more aware of our environment. I want to read it again. The Ring of Allaire (Wizard's Destiny) ReviewI have been in love with this series for over twenty years. For more than ten years of that time, it's been out of print. I don't know that I would read it today with the same eyes I did as a teen, but I still remember the liking and empathy I had for Tristan and his companions. I'm still impressed with the twist in how Tristan finds Valadan. The city of magicians is still wondrous, despite the many others I've read about since I discovered the flavors of this one.
This is a book which takes fairy tale and epic fantasy, and twines them into one. As such, there will be familiar archetypes, but also new twists. There are shades of The Last Unicorn in Valadan's tale, while still being unique and different. Allaire's plight reminds the reader of Sleeping Beauty, but it's not the same tale at all. And, of course, Tristan calls to mind every orphaned hero since Arthur. The Ring of Allaire (Wizard's Destiny) OverviewTristan is a teenaged wizard with dark hair and green eyes--but he's no Harry Potter. No cozy boarding school for Tristan either--he's been home-schooled by the old wizard who discovered him as an abandoned infant under an apple tree on Midwinter's Night. There's no one to tell Tristan who he is or what abilities may be his. If not for Thomas, his smart-ass cat familiar, he'd be utterly lost. One ordinary afternoon, Tristan returns home to find that his master has vanished, leaving his unprepared apprentice to take up the entwined quests for the legendary warhorse Valadan and the lost princess Allaire of the Nine Rings. He'd be no one's first choice, but Tristan's the only one left to assemble the essentials of the quest--a wizard, the Warhorse, the heir to Calandra's throne--infiltrate Nimir's fortress of Darkenkeep, and steal Allaire from beneath the Winter King's icicled nose. In their hundreds, the other wizards have tried--and died. Tristan's training is exemplary. His will is indomitable. His confidence, however, is nonexistent, and his magic is flawed and unreliable. The fate of his world depends on him--whether he thinks himself equal to the task or not.

The Fellowship of the Ring (Lord of the Rings (Pb)) ReviewI am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!The Fellowship of the Ring (Lord of the Rings (Pb)) Overview

Grantville Gazette II (The Ring of Fire) (v. 2) ReviewDisclaimer: As an introductory point for those not familiar with the ''1632verse'' series, this book is set in the years 1631-1633 and is an alternate history. It is but one of ten works in publication in just over 'five' years!!! Reading this book by itself is okay, but the first (lead) novel '1632' is free online from the Baen Free Library, and you will be best off enjoying that first. (Note the series is not consistantly labeled by Amazon, see wikipedia or Baen.com for the proper books in the collection. For example, the second novel is listed first under co-author David Weber, and not Eric Flint.)
This is a most unusual, and in my mind a very historical series since it's roots are not just the fruits of one author's thoughts, but based on the ideas and experience of hundreds. Yes hundreds, perhaps thousands. Since 2000 the marvelous webform Baen's Bar [...] has had a niche called 1632 Tech, which initially continued discussions started over in David Webers dedicated forum 'Buships'. After a friendly 'eviction' to the new 1632 Tech forum the discussions continued and picked up steam. It is certain that Eric Flint had not intended the lead book in the series '1632' to be the first of a series--he's said so, multiple times. But when the public calls, an author rethinks his schedule and begins considering feasibility and plot elements. This is what took place on the bar in those days, and has ever since in 1632 Tech. At some point the public won, and Eric conceded to do a sequel and the cheers began.
That concession produced the '1633' novel co-written by NYT best selling author David Weber, which appears under Webers by-line 'first listed author' (Marketing!!!) as the (then) better known author due to the arcane habits of print publication.
But the 1632 Tech forum activity also caused Flint to do something very unusual--he made a decent and perhaps even noble public acknowledgement of his debt to Fans and the whole tubful of published authors that contributed to the frenzied furor of seething ideas on 1632 Tech--He officially opened up his milieu to accept stories from writers and wanabee's. This created an unusual thing--a co-sequel, 'THE RING OF FIRE, albeit published somewhat later--an eponymous reference to the 'miracle' that created the storyline in it's 17th century setting; one smack dab in the middle of the horrendous Thirty Years War (Just for spice, no doubt!). This long work was essentially were co-written at the same time as the 1633 sequel, and both works influenced and shaped the other.
In a single word, both are 'canonical' for the milieu-- i.e. part of the official background for what comes later. Another result is the opening of the Baen's Bar '1632 Slush' (A 'Slushpile' in editor-speak refers to the stack(s) of unsolicited manuscripts that need read and vetted) forum, a place for wanabees (and a few published writers!!!) to submit stories within the milieu for 'Peer Review' and critical editing.
Both Flint and Jim Baen agreed when setting this up to stay out of it, and eventually when the stories were 'Ripe' they were commended to Eric for another anthology. This brought about in succession, first an expermental eMagazine 'The Grantville Gazette' then the expermental publishing of that as a trade paperback and then five more 1632verse anthologies all published first as eMagazines, then eBooks. This book, the Grantville Gazette II, is the second of the six and like all six--again a very remarkable characteristic in a series--all the works published by Baen in any format are considered canon for the series per Eric Flint. So not only are they high quality and tried by fire by picky knowledgable co-fans, but they are the cream of what ferment has been going on 1632 Tech now in it's sixth year, and shape the background and characters that appear in the series' novels.
Many authors have 'loaned' their milieu to others, or equally, invited them for a short story or two, but the standard tradition heretofore has been the works were performed off to the side some where--formulated so they wouldn't impact the main storylines which were held to be sacrosanct to the author that owned it. Well Eric Flint has maintained editorial control, but he has also wrought several new and wonderful things in developing this rich and wondrous mish-mash of novels and short-stories by essentially conceding to restrict his plot developments to the 'neohistorical' framework as are embodied by these shorter works collected into anthologies and then thrice released. A big part of the appeal of this series is Flint's rejection of the importance of 'Big Men' in history and the counter thesis that historical forces are instead made up by the many individuals choosing this over that and sweeping together collectively into a new dawn. These are the stories as seen from that ground level and they are special in their own right.
Others above have commented on the hilarious 'The Company Men', and I too give it kudos. I did not find 'An Invisible War' at all wordy, and suspect that as a tale it will have far more impact within the canon than the former. It deals with Medicine and Education from our day meeting and coming to terms with Medical practices and practioners and the Educational establishment rooted in late-middle age practices, and ... (I won't spoil the plot, suffice it to say, it was very well done and I violated my implicit contract with Baen's by immediately forwarding that story as an RTF file to no less than seven friends I know in medicine related fields. I did pennance by running down the HC the very next day!)
'Bottom Feeders' is a delightful murder mystery complicated by anti-germanic predjudices, and 'Collateral Damage' featured the Airforce giving Richelieu a taste of the future in a thought provoking good tale. 'Just One of Those Days' is written from the viewpoint of a Gustavus' II cavalry trooper and it's dry wit ended far too soon. 'God's Gifts' is a interesting and quite readable vignette that could have been much longer and sadly wasn't--it covered the difficulty's likely faced by the 'approved' German churches when faced with the modern practices of religious toleration and ecumenicalism. In truth, for my part Eric Flint's own 'Steps in the Dance' is the weakest work in the collection and his writing is never weak in any general sense. So buy it early and often. It's good stuff. If you're already into the series, as a canonical work, the decision's a no brainer. Incidently, I gave me 84 y.o. Mom '1632' for Mother's Day last year. :-)Grantville Gazette II (The Ring of Fire) (v. 2) Overview

1634: The Galileo Affair (Ring of Fire) ReviewThis volume in the alternate history series based on Eric Flint's 2000 novel "1632" follows "Ring of Fire" and "1633," and is the first of several planned "1634: ..." books to be published. Even though "Ring of Fire" is an anthology, it should be read before "1634: The Galileo Affair," since stories in it introduce and develop many of the main characters (Father Mazzare, the Stones, Mazarini) and set up much of the plot. "1632" and "1633" should be read as well, of course.
At the beginning of "1634: The Galileo Affair," the new United States of Europe is not in the best strategic situation. Simultaneously at war with England, France, Spain, Denmark, Austria and various other polities, it is running short of allies - the Dutch Republic is in dire straights, while Bohemia has its hands full trying to break away from Austria. To try to break out of this encirclement and tap into Mediterranean trade, an embassy is sent to the Venetian Republic.
At the head of the embassy are Father Mazzare and Reverend Jones, along with Sharon Nichols and Tom 'Stoner' Stone, a nurse and chemist (respectively), who will be sharing their medical knowledge with the Italians as a demonstration of good faith. Accompanying Stone are his three teenage sons, who (following their hormones and the lovely Giovanna) quickly fall in with a group of incompetent but enthusiastic revolutionaries hoping to Americanize Italy. They are sucked into a wacky, hare-brained scheme to free Galileo from the Inquisition and take him north to Grantville and Freedom. This plot would probably be harmless were it not receiving expert assistance from a French agent provocateur under orders to discredit the USE. Meanwhile, the copies of the Papers of the Second Vatican Council and related twentieth century Catholic theology that were sent to Pope Urban VIII in "Ring of Fire" have been creating quite a stir in the highest ranks of the Church. The Pope is carefully considering what to do about Galileo, as well as the USE and its curious religious toleration.
"1634: The Galileo Affair" is quite a bit different from the other novels that have so far been published in the 163x series (and probably from those yet to be published, as well). This seems to be Flint's intention, and the reason he's writing the series with a large number of coauthors. In this volume, he is joined by English lawyer Andrew Dennis, with the result that military and political aspects of the story decrease dramatically, while more time is spent on romance and lawyerly discussion. Although I enjoyed the book overall, this is not my favorite approach.
Another notable feature of this volume in the series is that it ignores all of the plot threads developed in "1633," focusing entirely on Italy. According to Flint, "The Galileo Affair" is only the first of several books that will take place in 1634, each pursuing only one story line at a time, though all still tying in with each other. Currently five volumes are planned for this "1634: ..." 'story explosion' - "The Baltic War" (with David Weber), "Escape from the Tower" (Eric Flint solo), "The Austrian Princess" (with Virginia DeMarce) and "Bohemia" (a tentative title, with Mike Spehar) in addition to "The Galileo Affair." While some may be frustrated by the lack of connection to "1633," I personally feel that this approach is much preferable to the 'Robert Jordan method' of trying to cover every plot line at once and ending up not advancing any of them.
At any rate, if you enjoyed "1633" and "Ring of Fire," "1634: The Galileo Affair" should be worth checking out. If you're a fan of the series primarily because of Flint's military writing, the library may be the best choice.1634: The Galileo Affair (Ring of Fire) Overview

Y: The Last Man, Vol. 5: Ring of Truth ReviewIn the fifth trade paperback of Brian K. Vaughan's Y: The Last Man, we finally see Yorick's girlfriend Beth for the first time since the first story arc, we get a glimpse into Hero Brown's troubled past, a new girl named Beth complicates things with Yorick, and the reason that Yorick and Ampersand survived the plague is revealed.
In the story arc "Tongues of Flame", Yorick goes to a church in order to repent for the girl he killed in the previous arc. While there, he meets Beth, a girl who has become the de facto caretaker of the church. They comfort each other and provide company that each desperately needs. Yorick also helps her deal with a group of Amazons.
In "Hero's Journey", we see scenes from Hero's past, which was fairly traumatizing. From feeling neglected by her parents to being afraid of her grandfather for dark (and implied) reasons to overcompensating sexually for a bad case of acne, we are able to see why the Amazons were so successful at brainwashing her. We also learn what happened to her between her "incarceration" in Marrisville and her situation now.
Finally, in "Ring of Truth", having finally reached California, Yorick, Agent 355, and Allison try to isolate the reason why Yorick and Ampersand survived the "gendercide", but things get complicated when some ex-Culper Ring agents show up. And just as the answer is revealed, a mysterious ninja named Toyota kidnaps Ampersand again (she was responsible for his kidnapping in "Comedy & Tragedy").
This may be the best Y trade paperback yet. While "Safeword" may be the best arc, these three arcs are all very good and very intriguing. The story only continues to get better, and the next leg of the journey of Yorick Brown, the last man on Earth, should prove to be very interesting indeed.Y: The Last Man, Vol. 5: Ring of Truth Overview

The Ring Around the Rose ReviewDavid has reached a new peak with this engrossing tale of an as yet unstarted final battle between man and myth. At first you may find yourself a little lost as the story jumps thru time and different characters. This will subside--ride it out and you will be pulled into an intoxicating mix of myth, lost love, and stark reality that will leave you howling for more. David has a unique way with a phrase-"Burning like a cross on an Alabama hilltop"-perfect! That will leave you grinning whilst grimacing at the same time. Highly recommended!!The Ring Around the Rose Overview

Grantville Gazette V (Ring of Fire) ReviewThese Grantville Gazette volumes are a real paradox for a reviewer. Since several different authors are involved, it is really difficult to separate the "wheat from the chaff." In general and without belaboring the good, the bad, and the downright ugly on a blow-by-blow basis, I always enjoy these volumes, since they manage to keep the 163x fan in me satisfied 'till the next major work hits the printers.
As both a chess player and amateur astronomer, I enjoyed the tales thus related. I didn't care much for the "electric buddha" business, since it really didn't add much to the ongoing Grantville saga.
I particularly view author David Carrico as an emerging talent.
2 "thumbs up" and 4 stars.Grantville Gazette V (Ring of Fire) Overview

1634: The Bavarian Crisis (Ring of Fire) ReviewBavarian Crisis is another novel about diplomacy in "1634", actually avoiding discussion of local military conflict. The main action of that year is covered in "The Baltic War," which could be read first (and, thankfully, has now been belatedly published). If newcomers start here (or with any of the "1634" books), they will miss too much of deeper import, and may find the story both incomprehensible and boring. This new volume takes us back to 1634, to one of the four crucial side-theaters for which longtime readers of this series have been waiting. The story develops in Thuringia, Bavaria, and Vienna, month by month, with chapter headings in Latin for no discernible reason. (You can play a little game, to find the phrase translated somewhere in the text.) Duke Maximilian of Bavaria is a study in religious madness as he loses control of his realm and makes others the scapegoats. He, and other potentates on the edges of the young United States of Europe, are under constant pressure and intrigue from its agents.
The book opens with three maps, showing places and contemporary political borders one won't find on a modern map. DeMare provides four genealogies so we can follow the intricate relations among characters and the ruling Hapsburg dynasty (the longest and therefore most complicated in all known history). There's much humor in these big books--not in dialogue so much as characters' thoughts, wordplay, anachronistic up-time jargon, manly jokes; nothing elaborate. Most everyone is very reasonable, that is, they make their reasons perfectly clear. In general, everybody acts so reasonably, with such little emotion, such wry humor, that the result is flat. One manifest flub--having a lead undercover character blurt out her identity when nobody had asked--is actually a setup for the final suspense. The pace has to be slowed by long digressions on historical and strategical matters (vital to alternative HISTORY, after all), while immediate tactics are concealed in the commanders' heads and cleverly sprung on the enemy (and the reader). That's about the only suspense, as the Adolf/Stearns USE juggernaut rolls on from success to success.
This West-Virginians-in-the-Thirty-Years-War saga is a thoroughly collaborative work in progress, with significant online input. Thus, the fact this book is "late" to the fray means little, because there is no single main line, many themes in parallel, and no single series "hero" (instead, many). That is what makes this alternative history series unique, yet frustrating to try to follow while it is being published. These later novels lack the shock and surprise of the first, truly novel. They also lack the sense of desperation that made "1632" and "1633" so powerful.1634: The Bavarian Crisis (Ring of Fire) Overview

The Ring of Five ReviewExcellent book. I bought this book thinking it was an adult book. When I found out it was a young-adult book i was kinda dismayed but figure 'heck, i paid for it, im gonna read it.' And thank God I did! It was very exciting and keep moving right from the beginning. I hate books that take 15 chapters to explain the character and premises for stories but this book explains it all AS you go along.
If your a Christian (which I am) you have to look past all the mythical angelic stuff in this book. Its purely fiction people and no need to get upset saying its not accurate about angels and seraphim etc etc.
I feel this book ranks up there with Harry Potter in the mythical-thriller category. No gore, language, sex or descriptive violence. Great for parents and teens. The Ring of Five Overview

The Red Blazer Girls: The Ring of Rocamadour ReviewTerrific mystery for girls. The story is a puzzle filled with puzzles--linguistic, mathematical, logical (even the publication information has to be read in a mirror). The Red Blazer girls are middle class kids who attend a Catholic school in the Upper East side of Manhattan--tony surroundings, regular kids. Refreshingly, the story is filled not only with wit, suspense, excitement, and adventure, but with good, caring parents, teachers, priests, and other adult role models. It is cool--and crucial to solving the puzzle--to be smart and work hard in school. Dialogue is crisp and funny, and the girls, though they seem quite advanced for 12-year olds--are a delight. The Red Blazer Girls: The Ring of Rocamadour Overview

The Ring Bear ReviewThis highly original book by author David Michael Slater is a fascinating picture book that enthralled me from cover to cover, even as it captivated children all around the world. Published by Flashlight Press, one of my favorite children's publishing houses, the book is geared for children ages 4-8, a category I love to read.
The Ring Bear has a little bit of everything: love, joy, anger, fear, family unity, humor, adventure and much more. It deals with the serious subject of parental remarriage. The main character is a young boy named Westley who is used to his mother being a single parent and has adjusted to life without a father. His world is turned upside down when she decides to remarry.
In order to help her son with his objection to the marriage and assuage his anger and fear, his mother tells him he's going to be the ring bearer at the wedding--hoping this will make him feel more secure. Westley thinks she said "ring bear," so he comes to the wedding dressed as a bear and tries to scare everyone away.
That's when the problems--and the fun--begin. What happens then? How do the wedding guests react? How do his mother and Stan, his future stepfather, take it? Is there a happy solution to this problem, a situation that sadly happens more and more often in today's world? If so, how does it happen? Will the troubled boy finally come to realize how much his mother loves him and learn to trust her? And what does Stan do to break the ice with Westley?
Obviously, I can't tell you any more without spoiling the plot, but I can tell you that despite the serious theme, this is a book that has many giggles for you and your little ones. It's a warm-hearted book that will tug at your heart-strings ... as you cry one minute, laugh the next.
Slater makes his characters so believable you will feel like you are there with them, and no one will be able to forget the mischievous, yet endearing Westley. The colorful, charming illustrations by talented artist S. G. Brooks enhance the story-line, helping bring it even more alive.
This unusual wedding adventure is a touching book which will be helpful for children whose parents are remarrying. I recommend it highly. If you feel the same, look for Grandfather's Wrinkles, Grandpa for Sale, and Carla's Sandwich ... other releases by this same popular publisher whose editor has the uncanny ability to know what children enjoy reading.
