Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch (Book 1) ReviewWow! What a fun read! The author really has a winner here. If you're looking for a fun romp through a magical world, then look no further. In this book, the author has put an original spin on the essence of magical powers, giving the story a fresh new twist. He also manages to blend the real and magical worlds in a unique way which helps you identify more closely with the main characters: they truly are as real as you and me (no need for a prized lineage or a high midi-chlorian blood count!). If you have kids who don't like to read, hand them this book. They will more than likely change their minds! Is this the next Harry Potter? Who knows, it certainly could be. Although it is a fun book for young and old alike, and full of magic, one thing it is NOT is "another" Harry Potter. This is a truly original story and a lot of fun to read. Once you start, and your internal movie projector gets going, you will quickly get attached to the characters and won't want to put the book (or should I say kindle?) down. There is one down side however: it appears we'll have to wait over a year for the next book! In the meantime, grab a copy, enjoy it, and spread the word!Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch (Book 1) OverviewThis first book in what promises to be a great new series is a very engaging and entertaining novel in the fantasy genre. Guaranteed to entertain kids and adults alike, this book would be particularly memorable to enjoy as a family. The author's distinctive take on his magical and mystical world is unique, refreshing, and fun. The whimsical tale begins with two wizards battling it out over a supreme magical force which the evil and power-hungry one covets. Although injured in the fight, the magical essence manages to escape. It is accidentally transported off its home planet of Eldora and makes its way to Earth where, unbeknownst to the 16 year old Dylan Murphy, it merges with his body in order to heal and survive. Strange and wonderful things begin to happen as the unsuspecting young boy from Colorado begins to inadvertently invoke extraordinary new magical abilities from within. The evil sorcerer soon locates the magical essence, and deploys his minions to retrieve his prize. Opposing forces from the kingdom of Colabra are dispatched to protect the boy and the magical entity now living inside him. Before they know it, Dylan and a small group of friends are whisked away to the enchanted planet of Eldora and find themselves in a struggle to save each other and the planet from a powerful wicked foe. Full of action, adventure, and enchantment, this story takes you on a delightful ride across very real venues in the state of Colorado as well as some unique, beautiful, and strange lands on Eldora. If you enjoy fantasy books, you'll quickly become a Dylan fan as you accompany him and his friends on this incredible, supernatural journey.

Ring of Destiny (Dance of the Rings, Book 3) ReviewMs. Fancher's book, "Ring of Destiny", is superb. Some who have reviewed the book have been concerned about the length. This I do not understand. What is the hurry? Is it a race? In the case of a book as good as this, the only draw back is that it has to end at all. In fact, you are fortunate because (if you haven't already) you can buy the entire triology and read from one book right into the next, without stopping. I recommend it. The complexity and growth of her characters, like the development of her plot, unfolds with majestic beauty. I've read a lot books, cotton candy books that can be devoured in a single sitting; Ms. Fancher's books are much more. They are a full-course, gourmet meal that leaves a lasting satisfaction.Ring of Destiny (Dance of the Rings, Book 3) Overview

Time Spike (The Ring of Fire) ReviewI have the feeling that Flint has run into troubles with the complexity of changes cascading into alternate history in the Ring of Fire - it becomes more and more complex extrapolating the new history that resulted from the arrival of Grantville.
This book is set onto a smaller stage - it is more about the interaction of a small set of cultures being transposed into virgin time. 20th century knowledge does not have the devastating effect is had in middle age Germany.
The cultures - modern prisoners and prison guards, 1800's Cherokees, 1500's Conquistadores, and early (very early) American Indians are dropped way back in time before familiar plants and animals had evolved.
The book was a good page turner, well written. Much faster paced than "Bavarian Crisis". Flint seems to have found a good co-author.
The book though has the feel of the beginning of a series - I can almost taste the sequel that has already been written in draft form. This sense of incompleteness got it the four - rather than the five - stars from me. (Besides - to needs to keep authors humble.)
But go buy it - it is good.Time Spike (The Ring of Fire) Overview

Three Gothic Novels: Ring of Fear, the Mark of Merlin, the Kilternan Legacy ReviewThis is a wonderful accumulation of three top quality romances. The Ring of Fear is a story about a nice girl who fell on hard times and is traveling the horse show circuit when she meets a wonderful fellow. They then begin a series of adventures including some encounters with a dubious character from a dark period in her past.
The Mark of Merlin is another wonderful story. A young woman is orphaned and her legal guardian is one of her father's war comrades. The soldier is expecting a small child but recieves a young woman just under twenty one. A nice, beautiful woman almost twenty one.
The Kilternan Legacy is a wonderful romance set in modern Ireland where a young American divorcee woman comes to deal with an inheritance. She soon discovers a lot about herself, her distant relations, and a couple of very handsome menThree Gothic Novels: Ring of Fear, the Mark of Merlin, the Kilternan Legacy Overview

The Integral Trees and The Smoke Ring ReviewI don't think anyone who has read Niven would argue that
he is the master of what I like to call the "concept"
novel. He invents a fantastic concept, throroughly
develops the idea, then writes a story around it. The
shortcoming of the method is that characters, and in
particular the flow of the stories from beginning to end
is compromised. The Integral Trees is no exception to
this rule, though characters are developed marginally better
than in many Niven novels. The concept is based around
a society of people descended from a single space ship
which was stranded near a neutron star. The neutron star
sustains a unique ecosystem in the "smoke ring" of
breathable gasses in orbit around it. The integral trees
are giant trees, shaped like the calculus symbol for an
integral. The people inhabit the trees, and this is where
the story begins. This novel is a very quick read, and
as I mentioned, the concept is fabulous. I recommend it.The Integral Trees and The Smoke Ring Overview

The Ring of Five Dragons (The Pearl, Book 1) ReviewRing is a refreshingly different entry in the fantasy sweepstakes with Lustbader breaking away from the stereotyped battle between a group of innocents and an imprisoned "Dark One" aided by a band of apostates. For one, the scale of this series is galactic. The drama is played out on a single planet, but the key protagonists come from different star systems and in fact are ethnically very different. On one hand are the peaceful, almost passive Kundalan and on the other hand the aggressive, oppressive V'ornn. The V'ornn, as part of their history, have warred with and eradicated numerous other planets at the bidding of their mysterious technomage lords the Gyrgon. V'ornn society is male dominated and strictly stratified into merchants, warriors, workers and women. The Gyrgon themselves are a kind of super-caste who direct the actions of the V'ornn in a quest for an unknown goal. This quest has brought V'ornn and Gyrgon to Kundala where they oppress the peaceful Kundalan in a savage campaign of suppression. The Kundalan, unable to resist the superior might of the V'ornn, are driven to questioning the old gods and traditions of Kundala, which kept them prosperous and happy, yet were of no avail in the face of the V'ornn assault. Into this long dark night of the Kundalan soul comes a prophesied savior who may be able to restore the balance. That is the bare bones of the plot; however Lustbader brings a number of innovations that make this story special. First, the world of Kundala and the lifestyles of Kundalan and V'ornn are very well depicted, so much so that the reader can easily picture the scenes. Second, in keeping with some of his earlier writings, Lustbader brings a large dollop of mysticism to Ring. The blend of religion and sorcery is very well handled and the mystic element shapes the story. Third, social interactions within and across boundaries are very well painted. For all their external differences, the politics, lusts and feuds of V'ornn, Gyrgon and Kundalan alike are eminently human! For a change, women do play a more than ornamental role and in fact the unusual male-female dichotomy of its main protagonist should make future volumes very interesting indeed. And make no mistake, there will be more volumes! This book is just the setting of the stage (in fact it's ending hangs in the air) and the main story is yet to develop. A very promising first volume of a possible series (though of course this is really not Lustbader's fantasy debut - remember the excellent Sunset Warrior trilogy). Highly recommended. The Ring of Five Dragons (The Pearl, Book 1) Overview
