COLD SUMMER NIGHTS ReviewThis is the second book I have read by this author and I just have to say he is a great writer. He makes me laugh, he keeps me held in suspense, he throws in little quirks (like his mention of one of his other books Cold Faith and Zombies, yep I caught it!) and he keeps my attention held from beginning to end. I just love his writing style, it is so down to earth and every day, like what he is writing about is just another normal everyday occurrence. Cold Summer Nights was no different. It is a short read but jam-packed full of errie goodness from the first page to the end. I loved the characters in this story and what I loved even more was the creep factor: shadows in the dark, a mysterious girlfriend that just pops up out of nowhere that no one really seems to know anything about, Nick (the main character)seeing his grandma in his room, considering the fact she had been in a vegetative state for a couple years and hadn't spoken a word. I don't want to give away anymore and ruin it for readers.
Basically, you have got to read this book and jump on board the Sean Thomas Fisher bandwagon. Then go to his blog and become a GFC member fishblogwash(dot)blogspot(dot)com for more information on his books and anything else on his mind. Sean's blog is one of my fav's, visit it and I'm sure it will be one of your's too. I can't wait to read what Sean brings forth in the future!!

With This Ring, I Bleed, DEAD ReviewWhen a couple chooses to join together in marriage those lives are changed forever...for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health...til DEATH do they part. With This Ring, I Bleed, DEAD! takes the words "til death do us part" quite literally in ten imaginative tales of love, loss, murder and betrayal. It's not typical to find an anthology of horror stories that focus on love/marriage and I found the change to be very refreshing and highly enjoyable.
I do not plan on giving my thoughts on the individual stories inside the electronic pages of this anthology, as I loved them all and do not feel it fair to try to pick one or two to give thoughts on. Each story in With This Ring, I Bleed, DEAD! were very well written and each had a hauntingly beautiful quality that just added to the torment the characters were involved in or the cause of.
Characters, setting and mood were well established and defined, which can sometimes be a problem in short stories. It is possible to have well developed characters and settings in a limited amount of words, it just takes creativity and the authors of With This Ring, I Bleed, DEAD! have that ability.
Obviously I give this anthology a definite I DO and YOU SHOULD.With This Ring, I Bleed, DEAD Overview

Sci-Fi Movie Freak Review"Sci-Fi Movie Freak" by Robert C. Ring is an outstanding book, but it's more than just an outstanding book--it's an outstanding experience.
The writing is excellent, the bright, vivid photographs are superb and the layout is phenomenal. When you crack open the pages of "Sci-Fi Movie Freak" you experience a barrage of images of the best of the best in Science Fiction, iconic still frames that elicit an emotional response drawn from the darkened-theater-full-on-surround-sound-jaw-dropping-popcorn-munching-movie-theater impregnated reaches of your memory banks that remind you of all the fun, the laughter, the excitement and, at times, the cathartic terror you've experienced over the years watching films like "Forbidden Planet", "Invasion of the Body Snatcher", "Godzilla", "Alien" and so much more.
And Mr. Ring's writing--fluid, accessible, clear and with a welcomed air of intellectualism--shares in that sense of joy and love for these classic Science Fiction Films. "Sci-Fi Movie Freak" is a page-turner, by the truest definition of the phrase. As I read, I found myself swept up in the fun of the book and drawn forward from beginning to end by the fluid tempo of Mr. Ring's writing, like a locomotive cascading down a mountainside, trailing a long train of boxcars, the momentum building moment to moment, the thrill of the ride increasing with each passing page.
I am, of course, a lover of Science Fiction films and my love for the genre knows few bounds. But it is not only my love for the source material that made this book enjoyable. Mr. Ring's writing would have made a true believer out of me had I not already had an embedded love for science fiction. It is in that way that "Sci-Fi Movie Freak" is not only a book for Science Fiction fans but a book for anyone who has seen a movie in the last hundred years.
If you don't already have a passion for Science Fiction, you likely will by the time you get to the last page of this book. And you'll have a bloody good time getting there too.Sci-Fi Movie Freak Overview

Slave Ring (Vampire: The Masquerade -- Clan Brujah Trilogy, Book 1) ReviewIf you like "Vampire: The Masquerade" then you may like this first in a series about the Brujah clan. We meet Theo, a Brujah archon who was once a slave in the antibellum south, whose method of operations appears to be very traditional until his mortal life memories get triggered by his latest assignment. Some Kindred and some mortals are working together to run a slave ring of mortals for high profit to markets around the world. This ring seems to cut across all lines that exist in the world of Kindred politics or perhaps its just a cover for something more serious. Burdened with a neonate Brujah who is a survivor of this modern slave ring, Theo must balance his duty, his clan, the politics of the Midwest, and his own memories as he searches for other survivors and the leaders of the slavers. The writing is excellent, showing depth to Kindred characters that is often lacking in many RPG groups and in the books themselves on occassion. There is plenty of violence for those just interested in the mechanics of combat but primarily this is a story of lies and coverups discovered by someone with a century and a half chip on his shoulder.Slave Ring (Vampire: The Masquerade -- Clan Brujah Trilogy, Book 1) Overview

Witches' Rings (Series B (Norvik Press)) ReviewJust a note from the translator in reaction to the published customer review -- the "witches' rings" of the title are rings trampled in the grass by mating deer, and allude to the way people spend their lives running around in circles, unsure of what they want or how to obtain it, as the character who sees them observes that the deer are doing.Witches' Rings (Series B (Norvik Press)) Overview

The Haunter of the Ring and Other Tales (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural) ReviewWhenever we think about R.E. Howard, certain mythical images of gigantic, brooding men, with "smouldering" eyes, automatically emerge. But in the process we tend to forget that Howard, under pressure from market conditions, had tried to expand his market by trying his hand in several genres apart from the "sword & sorcery" stuff, as well. Since he was a regular (if not the foremost) contributor to Weird Tales, and also a protege of H.P. Lovecraft, it was inevitable that he would create several horror stories that would fit the requirement of that magazine ideally, while retaining his own vitality and tight narrative structure. This book, with the incredible pricing provided by Wordsworth, is bursting at the seam with such stories. Amongst them there are numerous gems which we overlook while thinking about the mythical men from Atlantis, Cimmeria, Pictish Britain, and medieval Europe & Asia. There are solid "southern" horror tales, best represented by: "Pigeons from Hell" (alone worth the price of the book). There are Cthulhu-mythos tales like "The Black Stone" and "The Thing on the Roof". There are blood-curdling vampire stories and stories of ancient horrors that wait for the over-eager opportunist to stumble across them. There are adventure stories like "Fire of Asshurbanipal" and novella like "Skull-Face". There are....
Overall, the book is highly recommended for all lovers of pulp fiction who like their horrors to be horrific enough, and yet described in a lucid and tight English (something that the creator of Cthulhu could not achieve in his life-time), that also at a very-very reasonable price. The Haunter of the Ring and Other Tales (Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural) Overview

The Traiteur's Ring ReviewAuthor Jeffrey Wilson mixes two not normally related genres together in a fast moving novel called "The Traiteur's Ring". The author weaves jungle warfare in with a supernatural and mystical element that creates a whole new kind of reading experience for readers. The key here is that he successfully pulls it off. The author carries the reader along on one great adventure story. The characters are fleshed out well so we have a good idea who the hero and the bad guys are. More importantly - we are allowed to get inside their heads and find ourselves following them along in the story as if we were a part of the action ourselves.
There are no other stories like this out there-this is totally an original idea. It is both creative and explosive. It will provide readers of war and adventure genre with more then enough action while still giving us an inside look at all those involved. I enjoyed the book. I feel that most readers will have a difficult time walking away from this once they begin to read it. You will find yourself actually wondering where this story will take you next. There is mysterious elements not normally found in books dealing with warfare.
An entertaining book for those traveling on an airplane, through airports, or on vacation - just download it and take it along with you. I love this new way to read books - it allows me to take many books along on my journeys. My recommendation is to take this one with you and add it to your collection. It will be money well spent. The Traiteur's Ring Overview

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Ring of Fire ReviewDespite the cover and the back cover, the main characters of this story is Buffy and Drusilla with Angelus and Spike backing up their main squeeze. Dru's new demon boyfriend is consolidating power and decided to show his "affection" by eliminating the Slayer. Which places Angelus and Spike as third wheels - either support Dru by destroying Buffy or eliminate their rival for Dru's attention. A difficult decision for Angelus who wants that joy for himself. So if you were looking for the major confrontation between Angelus and Buffy, buy a copy of the video. But if you're looking for a good story within the time period that most of the writers of the books avidly avoid, pick this up. It's an excellent addition to the Buffy Universe and Sook's artwork is getting better and betterBuffy the Vampire Slayer: Ring of Fire Overview

The Best of John Bellairs: The House with a Clock in Its Walls; The Figure in the Shadows; The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring ReviewThis volume contains:
The House with a Clock in its Walls (1973)
The Figure in the Shadows (1975)
The Letter, the Witch and the Ring (1976)
I have not read all of Bellairs' novels, so I cannot say whether these three are really his "best". But the grouping is appropriate for other reasons: These are in fact the first three of Bellair's supernatural horror novels for kids; each is a sequel to the last; and all three feature the characters Lewis Barnavelt, Jonathan Van Olden Barnavelt, Mrs. Zimmerman, and (in the last two novels) Rose-Rita Pottinger. Moreover, the collection is more-or-less complete, since these are the only ones featuring these characters that were written entirely by Bellairs and published during his lifetime. The "next" in the series, entitled "The Ghost in the Mirror" was published posthumously after being completed by Brad Strickland in 1993 (after a gap of 17 years, during which Bellairs switched to writing about Johnny Dixon and Anthony Monday). Strickland has gone on to write his own adventures in the series (with what success I cannot say).
HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS begins with the orphaned Lewis Barnavelt, aged 10, being sent to live with his crazy Uncle Jonathan, and his batty neighbor Mrs. Zimmerman. The Uncle and the neighbor both turn out to be magicians (of the benevolent sort), and the grand old house they inhabit is filled with magical artifacts and mysteries, including a strange ticking sound reputed to come from a hidden clock. Matters get serious after the insecure Lewis, in an attempt to impress a friend, ignores his uncle's warning that he should never attempt magic. Creepy, scary fun ensues.
The next two novels in the series are just as well written, and every bit as creepy and scary as the original. However, the grimness becomes a little more unrelenting, and some kids may even find it depressing. One reason for this is that Bellairs seems to have somewhat regretted sending mixed messages in his first book, by his positive portrayal of magic as practiced by Mrs. Zimmerman and Uncle Jonathan. In the course of these volumes Mrs. Zimmerman is almost completely deprived of her powers. Bellairs continues to pay lip service to the idea that they are both benevolent minor magicians, but he ceases to show them using magic to positive effect. Magic use becomes, for all practical purposes, almost entirely associated with evil, and any dabbling therein leads only to horrific consequences.
I don't think Bellairs is necessarily wrong to want to discourage kids from seeking occult powers. However, it is a possibly unintended effect of this decision that the stories become increasingly and unrelentingly horrific. While the first volume made it seem as though there were powerful forces of Good to compete with those of Evil, the two sequels start to seem a bit like reading H.P. Lovecraft, wherein Evil has all the power.
This edition contains the original illustrations for all 3 books. This means we get Edward Gorey for the first novel, which is good. Unfortunately, other artists illustrated the 2 sequels. The latter pictures do not enhance the stories, which would be better off without them. The Best of John Bellairs: The House with a Clock in Its Walls; The Figure in the Shadows; The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring Overview

Rings: A Short Story ReviewI really struggled with what rating to give this story.
For the Story Quality (for the short time I was reading) 5 stars!
For the Characters 5 stars!
The Premise 5 stars!
HOW SHORT THE STORY WAS 1 STAR!
I loved this story about a civilization that sacrifices so much for the greater good. The premise was very interesting. I was left with so many questions! It was very unsatisfying. I mean dang. I know it was a short story. I just did not know HOW SHORT!!! I mean just when you are getting into the story. Blam... It is over. I swear it was 15 pages on my kindle. What happens to the people if the rings can become full blown? How did this epidemic begin? How does it end? Why are there no guns at the suicide stations? Why did the main character make a run for it with his daughter? What was so bad about this disease that made it so easy for people to make the choices that were made?
This author has some serious talent! Just next time put some meat on it!!Rings: A Short Story Overview

The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring ReviewJohn Bellairs' "The Letter, the Witch and the Ring" was the last in his Lewis Barnavelt series that he saw through completion before his death in 1991, Brad Strickland then continued the series, but never reached near the great thrill involved in this outstanding adventure. "The Letter, the Witch and the Ring" follows "The Figure in the Shadows" which I found rather disappointing and is the third in "The House with a Clock in its Walls" or Lewis Barnavelt series, this one however, hardly includes Lewis, instead, Rose Rita Pottinger introduced at the end of the first book stars in this great sequel.
Rose Rita Pottinger isn't looking forward to summer, her best friend Lewis is going away to camp and she'll be left all alone, there's an opportunity for her to join a girls camp, but she does not want to spend summer with other girls, mainly because she is a tomboy and believes that boys get to have all the fun. Nearby, Mrs. Zimmermann receives a letter from her late cousin Oley inviting her to pay a visit to the now deserted farm up in Wisconsin, which Mrs. Zimmermann has now inherited as well as an old snake-shaped ring which Cousin Oley believes might be magic. Mrs. Zimmermann invites Rose Rita in what-seems like an ordinary trip to the north, instead what they encounter is a thrilling unforgettable adventure facing the wicked witch Gert Bigger!
When Mrs. Zimmermann and Rose Rita arrive at Oley's Farm in the old green 1950 Playmouth (Named Bessie), they find that the place has been broken into and the ring stolen. Now the mystery is, who would want the ring and for what? Things go very wrong and seem to be getting worse and worse, more frightening for Rose Rita, especially after Mrs. Zimmermann mysteriously disappears. Luckily for Rose Rita, she's able to meet some new friends there, for instance, the Sipes family, who although sometimes become trouble for the girl, their intentions are always good.
What I loved most about this great book was its atmosphere, it seems surrounded by a somewhat gloomy, yet cozy feeling and the different events are chilling, sometimes you might even feel your heart-rate speed up enourmously. Indeed the greatest among all of the Lewis Barnavelt series I have read! A winner! The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring Overview

The Skull Ring ReviewAfter surviving a horrible physical and emotional trauma, journalist Julia Stone flees the big city for a new job in the bucolic surroundings of the rural mountain town of Elkwood, North Carolina. There, with the aid of therapist, Dr. Pamela Forrest, Julia literally begins to confront her past demons and the crippling paranoia that plagues her. During these intense therapeutic sessions with Dr. Forrest, dormant memories from Julia's subconscious begin to resurface--memories that hold secrets that not only threaten Julia's sanity, but her very life.
Scott Nicholson is the author of The Red Church, They Hunger, Burial To Follow, and several other wildly captivating novels. A slick, pro-writer with a bent for moody, suspenseful tales set in the Appalachian environs of North America, Nicholson knows how to get under the skin of his characters, and thus, the reader's. In his latest venture into the backwoods, Nicholson has created one hell of a unique heroine in the guise of Julia Stone. While as plucky and resourceful a protagonist as a reader could hope for, she is also terribly burdened and deeply flawed--which makes it all the easier to embrace and root for her.
Whether you're a fan of dark fiction, thrillers, mysteries, the occult, or just damn fine writing, The Skull Ring is a fire and brimstone rush. The Skull Ring Overview

The Ring, Vol. 4: Birthday (v. 4) ReviewMeimu, Birthday (Dark Horse, 2004)
Birthday, known in its film incarnation as Ring 0, is exactly what the film title would lead one to expect: a prequel to Ring. It's told in three interconnected short stories, that focus on Sadako (if you have somehow not yet found yourself involved some way in the Ring trilogy, read the first novel, or watch the first film; you'll get up to speed pretty quickly. Note: Ring Two is an "offshoot," not the actual sequel [that's Spiral, the film version of which was called Rasen and has not been remade in America as of this writing], and so you may get thrown off track if you think of it as canon).
I can't really call Birthday bad, per se, but am more than willing to entertain the idea that I'm not doing so because I have a fondness for Koji Suzuki's wonderful novels and Hideo Nakata's film versions. What Birthday is is more disjointed. It's hard, despite the presence of Sadako, to figure out exactly how it all fits in some pieces of the story (not to mention how we get from point A to point B; where does the title [and last frame] of "Lemon Heart" come from, anyway?). There are enough events from Ring here (told, of course, from different points of view) for us to get an anchor, but the boat itself is being battered by constantly-shifting winds.
Still, it's not a bad little book. The impressionist feel of the delivery, while sure to alienate those who like their stories straightforward, does give the whole thing a creepy sensation, and the stuff that comes at you from out of the blue (like that whole "lemon heart" thing) can be unsettling, as long as it doesn't completely jar you out of the story.
For Ring fanatics only, but will be a valuable addition to the completist's collection. ***The Ring, Vol. 4: Birthday (v. 4) Overview

Spiral (Ring Series, Book 2) ReviewIn Spiral, the sequel to Suzuki's Ring, we are to discover that the hoped for (if uncomfortable) resolution e promised at the end of Ring is not to come to pass. Instead we discover that there is a whole layer below Sadako's efforts at vengeance and that a darker and more haunting motive drives the story - one that threatens more than just those who watched the videotape.
Dr. Mitsuo Ando is haunted by the horrible accident that killed his son and destroyed his marriage. Still unable to make sense of his own life, he is called on to perform the autopsy of his friend Ryuji Takayama, who played a vital role in Ring. What he finds is that death was caused by a coronary blockage and that there are signs of a smallpox like viral infection. Odder is that the body seems to expel a piece of the newspaper used to fill out the thoracic cavity. Ryuji and Dr. Ando used to be addicted to ciphers, and a string of numbers on the paper can be decoded to spell R I N G.
Ando is drawn to Mai, Ryuji's student and lover, who suddenly disappears. As he investigates Ando discovers for himself that all of the victims of the videotape died similarly - all deaths seemingly by a viral infection and exposure to a videotape. Spiral thus introduces another, more unnerving idea. The Spiral is DNA and the theme of the book is mutation or, in broader terms, change.
This book is every bit as solid as Ring, but it pulls the rug out from under the reader by shifting from Ring's story of curses and ghosts to hard science fiction with just a dash of mysticism. As readers, we often have trouble shifting gears like that - stories that suddenly become something else take us out of our comfort zone. The Japanese seem more adept at accepting this kind of narrative 'mutation,' since the real core of the story, the focus on individuals who must make dark choices is still constant.
I liked Spiral a good deal, once I got over the change of pace. In its way, it is as well written as Ring, although it seems to have fared worse when converted to film. That is a shame, because the book will get less attention than it should as a result.Spiral (Ring Series, Book 2) Overview

The Ring, Vol. 1 ReviewAfter Koji Suzuki made it big with the Ring, it was a matter of time before it went into one of Japan's best-known mediums-manga. Artist Misao Inagaki and scripter Hiroshi Takahashi made it into a manga in 1999, and only in 2003 did an English language version reach American shores.
The story is so well-told from the American movie version to the Japanese and Korean movie versions, but I'll repeat it anyway. An urban legend tells of a videotape that will kill anyone who watches it within a week. Was this behind the death of Tomoko, the niece of reporter and single mother Reiko Asakawa?
Reiko learns a couple of things, that it wasn't just Reiko who died, but three of her friends who also watched the cursed video and died at the exact same time. Things take a turn when she visits the South Hakone Pacific Land resort where Tomoko and her friends spent vacation and watches a very strange video. Sure enough, a message at the end tells her she'll die within a week.
She enlists the aid of her ex-husband, Ryuji Takamura, a university professor who's having an affair with his student helper, Mai Takano. Confident of his intellect and cool-headedness, she believes he can help her. Sure enough, he sees it as a challenging game, and after analyzing the video bit by bit, discovers clues, such as an obscure dialect, a volcano, and the character Sada reflected in a human eye. "Whoever made this isn't normal. Without a tremendous amount of evil energy, this kind of complex prank can't be done." Note: unlike the movie, Ryuji seems a dashing sort of guy, younger than the actor who portrayed Ryuji in Ringu.
Their investigations lead them to Izu Oshima and to Sadako Yamamura. The rest is history. In the manga, like the films, the main character is a female and not male per the novel. Also, the more unsavory aspects of Ryuji's character has been eliminated, and the reason why Sadako was killed has been altered in the various versions. Here, it's mostly correct except for one aspect. Also, the concept with the blurred photos, never a part of the novel, is made here, as with the film versions.
The art here is definitely not the glittery wide-eyed shoujo style, although Mai, who is drawn kind of cute, is closest to it, but a more serious sort. Some of it is pretty macabre, such as Reiko waking up to the sight of a bloodied Tomoko, which leads to her discovering that her son Yoichi has just watched the video. However, the drawing of Sadako, dressed in a white robe, long black hair flowing down her face, obscuring it, will have entered the annals of horror film legend due to its replication in the three Ring films and variations of it in The Hypnotist and Ju-On. And her emerging from the TV makes for good graphic novel horror.
Followed by Ring 2, Spiral, the proper novel sequel to Ring, and the prequel Birthday, Ring Vol. 1 stands out as a great manga version of Suzuki's novel. The Ring, Vol. 1 Overview
