Sparkle (Kindle Single) ReviewMade the mistake of downloading this at work... couldn't let it go til I was done.
Loved every word of it - I myself opted for a simpler engagement ring, I never understood the Tiffany craze or why a man should ruin himself on a ring... I prefer putting down money on a house. But that's just me. Or it's me and Mara Altman.
I had read "Thanks for Coming", her novel, before reading this and she never disappoints. Always funny, always witty, always uncomfortably honest.
Great read! I highly recommend it, whether you care about engagement rings or not.Sparkle (Kindle Single) OverviewLast fall, newly-engaged author Mara Altman rejected the showy sparkle of a multi-carat diamond ring, and chose instead a simple, three-figure bauble. But why? There began her reportorial journey to find the true connection of diamonds to marriage -- and to love.

Opportunity Rings: A novel ReviewA hilarious book that caught my attention from the beginning. The author's writing style is funny and the book is easy to read. As a woman, I could relate to the events and the dilemmas the main character went through. Personally, I found her to be quite motivating because she's a career woman and managed to get over challenging situations in life (i.e. a cheating husband). It makes you realize that it's not the end of the world if something goes wrong; you'll get back on your feet and things can be good again (hence the title).
The book is very much like 'Sex and the city' and is therefore quite appealing to women. I got hooked on this book quickly and would definitively recommend this to others. Looking forward to read more of Sheryl Steinberg's books.Opportunity Rings: A novel Overview

The Brass Ring ReviewThis book can serve a multitude of uses to a multitude of readers: A "sort of" history of WWII; the story of how a young man from humble and poor beginings won a pulitzer prize for editorial cartooning, how an aspiring cartoonist gained national recognition and how other aspiring cartoonists may go about becoming recognized themselves. Highly entertaining with one of the most humorous and climactic endings I have ever had the pleasure to read. The Brass Ring Overview

Rings of Ice ReviewThe idea behind this story is an interesting one, but you can tell this is his first novel. The idea is that a large comet(s) are exploded and diverted in such a way as to bring some additional rain to Earth. The ill conceived plan goes drastically wrong, and the earth is once again deluged with non-stop rain. Cilivization and the environment break down, and Anthony's band of misfits - being led by a man with a vision in a Winnebago - try to survive.
If you are a die hard Anthony fan, you should read this to help you understand his evolution as a writer. If not a die hard fan, you may want to avoid this one and try some of his other Sci-fi - like his Orn, Omnivore, and Ox trilogy, or Kirlian Quest Series.Rings of Ice Overview

The Best Short Stories of Ring Lardner ReviewLardner's voice is distinctive, and it cuts through all the noise in your life until all you hear are his characters speaking, telling their stories as best they know how, their dialect as real and immediate as it was when these stories were first written. Imagine Dorothy Parker covering the World Series, Oscar Wilde at a bridge club in suburbia, Dave Barry on the slow train from Chicago to New York. The only difference is in Lardner's restraint: his characters, when ridiculous, never fail to remind that to laugh at them is to laugh at ourselves as well, a fact which can be comforting and disconcerting at the same time.
Best of the collection: "Alibi Ike," "Liberty Hall," "There Are Smiles," "The Anniversary."The Best Short Stories of Ring Lardner Overview

The Talisman Ring ReviewThe Talisman Ring is a marvellous piece of comedy, high drama, farce, romance and wit. If you find Regency drawing-room dramas slow-moving, but enjoy the beautiful writing, and want something to set your pulse racing and your excitement on end - buy The Talisman Ring. If you love mystery, this book is considered by some to be Heyer's masterpiece from her mystery writing career - probably because it is not a mystery in the strict sense of the word. It is a late 18th century story of snowdrifts, misunderstandings, disguises, humour, murder, and stolen rings. The book is very romantic, with one of Heyer's most likeable casts - Eustacie de Vauban, the romantic, strong-willed French refugee, Ludovic, Lord Lavenham, refugee of justice, smuggler and rogue, Miss Thane, as sensible as she is romantic and inventive, and Sir Tristram, one of Heyer's sardonic dark heroes. With Basil Lavenham, the oily dandy, a charming innkeeper, his deaf sister, a couple of bumbling Bow Street Runners, and Hugo Thane, Justice of the Peace, this is a happy, very fast-moving novel full of the sort of corruption that the reader can forgive, and it is just the right length for a beginner. Younger readers, in particular, should thoroughly be recommended to read this book to introduce them to the world of Heyer and its high drama, stylised manners and wonderful language. The Talisman Ring Overview

Ring Road ReviewI read an earlier edition of this great book under the title THE IMPARTIAL RECORDER. Here is the review I wrote of it:
How does a mere "customer review" deal with a novel by a professional reviewer? Like avoiding a fight with a professional boxer -- by saying only nice things. Fortunately, I have only nice things to say about THE IMPARTIAL RECORDER. The author, in his Preface, offers the book "for you to enjoy" and I urge everyone to take him up on the offer.
This is a novel with an Index. This is a comic novel with an Index and footnotes. This is a comic, poigant novel with an Index, footnotes, a wry Preface, droll Acknowledgments, even an amusing dust jacket photo of the author seemingly trying hard not to look like he is a funny fellow. This is an awful lot of fun for what is essentially a lament--a lament for the continuous passing of The-Way-Things-Are.
The title itself is clever: the original British title RING ROAD might not mean much to American readers, so we get "THE IMPARTIAL RECORDER" which happens to be the name of the local newspaper in the small town that is the story's setting, but which really refers to the story's good-natured and nonjudgmental narrator, who chronicles in detail the everyday thoughts and actions of the town's ordinary citizens, as they simultaneously cause and cope with the changes that sweep (or creep) through their small town life. We read equally of their strengths and their faults, their failures and their achievements, even as we read equally of the fairness or foulness of the weather. Meanwhile, the plot develops, barely glimpsed behind the streams of detail. Or, according to the Index, "Plot: thickens, the, 129."
Because Mr. Sansom is, to me, an unfamiliar author, I keep finding similarities with those who are familiar. The amiable narrator, for example, reminds me of Van Reid and his Moosepath series; others mention a resemblance to Garrison Keillor. The focus on mundane mental minutiae, while not as extreme or obsessive, is somewhat like Nicholson Baker's in THE MEZZANINE, or John Lanchester's MR. PHILLIPS. The sort of backhanded plot development recalls the first half of Lanchester's THE DEBT TO PLEASURE. The author's knack of fitting opposing emotions into a single thought rivals that of Sherman Alexie, though Alexie's combination of grieving with bawdy hilarity (TEN LITTLE INDIANS) is more extreme than Sansom's combination of grieving with gentle drollery (as a recent widower spends his days doing all the things he never did with his wife--watching soaps, window shopping at the mall). The author's ability to look out from within his various character's minds is reminiscent of Ursula K. Le Guin's SEA ROAD, also set in a small town. THE IMPARTIAL RECORDER's small town is presumably in Ireland, but could easily be Mayberry RFD or Pickax City USA. Some of those mundane, everyday thoughts are somehow very like my own, and the whole story is somehow very like this story I'm living right now in my own small town, and maybe like yours too, in your town. And maybe--even if it seems that "Here we are lived by our lives rather than the other way around," maybe, like the impartial recorder, we just can't see the theme for the details (the Index lists "themes: disowning of, xi" but also "themes: residual evidence of, 1ff").
Read it for the laugh-out-loud details, though, and let the theme take care of itself. I'll be looking for an opportunity to read the author's TRUTH ABOUT BABIES.Ring Road Overview

At first you may find yourself a little lost as the story jumps thru time and different characters. This will subside--ride it out and you will be pulled into an intoxicating mix of myth, lost love, and stark reality that will leave you howling for more. Bored of the Rings: A Parody of J.R.R. Tolkein's the Lord of the Rings ReviewDespite a background in literature I actually remember very few lines of verse, but amongst those committed to memory are the lines: "We Boggies are a merry folk/who like to eat until we choke/loving all like friend and brother/and hardly ever eat each other" (which is followed up a chorus that repeats the word "gobble" a whole bunch of times). "Bored of the Rings," the Harvard Lampoon parody of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings," was written by Douglas C. Kenney and Henry N. Beard at the end of the Sixties, right before they went off into the real world to found "The National Lampoon" and at a time when the Trilogy was required reading for fans of fantasy.
Of course, it goes without saying that much of what you will find in here will be grossly offensive and that if you are not well versed in Tolkien's Trilogy then the story of the ring that was given by Dildo Bugger to his nephew Frito, who then embarked with his servant Spam, his friends Moxie and Pepsi, Goodgulf Grayteeth the wizard, Stomper the ranger (a.k.a. Arrowroot of Arrowshirt), Bromosel, Gimlet the dwarf and Legolam the elf across Lower Middle Earth to the dark land of Fordor is not going to make much sense. For that matter you had better be well versed in the drug culture of the Sixties and the political machinations of Richard Nixon to get all of the references (I just realized: we need an annotated edition of "Bored of the Rings"). Even if you have seen the movies and recognize the lady Hashberry, you still need to have read the books to know who Tom Benzedrine is in the grand scheme of things.
My favorite scene are when the Ballhog shows up and when Goddam and the ring meet their final fate. This is a lengthy parody, necessitated by the size of the work that inspired this insanity. Despite the low-brown humor involved with the playful names, there is some college level sophistication to the parody as well. However, if you consider Tolkien to be sacred text, then do not go anywhere near "Bored of the Rings" because you will be grossly offended (and probably several other types of offended as well). I will still maintain that the wicked sense of humor here is inspired by an affection for Tolkien's work, but understand that there will be those who dismiss that idea.Bored of the Rings: A Parody of J.R.R. The Boxer's Heart: How I Fell in Love with the Ring ReviewAfter reading great reviews about this book, I got a copy even though boxing--let alone women's boxing!--isn't my thing. But then, this book isn't about boxing: it's about life, love, mastering fear and pain, themes that this amazing writer ties together by means of boxing & conflict as a metaphor for life. (Still, there are many fascinating details about real, 'non-metaphorical' boxing too--the first chapter, about the author's preparations for her first professional bout, is so suspenseful and well-told that I couldn't put the book down until I'd gotten to the end when Ms. Sekules tells us the outcome, after detouring through other fascinating territory about her life, the history of women in boxing, and many other issues.) Ms. Sekules does a dazzling job here of intertwining the gripping descriptions of her life in boxing with those issues that that 'the ring' is meant (I think) to represent here: the difficulties of loving (loving oneself not least of all), of coming to terms with one's fears about life and self-worth, of realizing one's limitations--and, in the end, also one's strengths. It's a moving journey.
Also, the author's narrative voice is unlike any I've ever come across: strong, clear, very idiosyncratic, and, in the end, totally winning. It reminded me of the first time I read "Catcher in the Rye"--it's that personal and quirky and astute. I hope there are many more Sekules books in the pipeline. This is clearly a major new author. The Boxer's Heart: How I Fell in Love with the Ring Overview

The Red Blazer Girls: The Ring of Rocamadour ReviewTerrific mystery for girls. The story is a puzzle filled with puzzles--linguistic, mathematical, logical (even the publication information has to be read in a mirror). The Red Blazer girls are middle class kids who attend a Catholic school in the Upper East side of Manhattan--tony surroundings, regular kids. Refreshingly, the story is filled not only with wit, suspense, excitement, and adventure, but with good, caring parents, teachers, priests, and other adult role models. It is cool--and crucial to solving the puzzle--to be smart and work hard in school. Dialogue is crisp and funny, and the girls, though they seem quite advanced for 12-year olds--are a delight. The Red Blazer Girls: The Ring of Rocamadour Overview

The Ring of Truth Review"Patrick O'Kelly was a peddler of scarves and trinkets, with a habit of telling magnificent lies." So begins "The Ring of Truth". "Magnificent" may even be an understatement for him. He is supposed to have kissed the Blarney Stone once, that fabled and mystical rock that gives one the gift of gab, and by the way he carries on, it's believed that he managed to get a bit of that rock stuck in his teeth! He is such a fine artist of Blarney, that he easily boasts that he could out-fib the very king of the Leprechauns himself!!
Well, as any good Irish legend will tell you, be careful about what you say about the Fair Folk, for they have great ears for hearing and egos to boot!! It's hardly long before Patrick O'Kelly is swept off to the very land of the Faeries to meet the king of the leprechauns himself!
Like any fine Celtic tale, the book is full of twists and turns and play on words, of which the title of the book is just one (I'll not give away the ending for fear of spoiling the fun for readers!). The ending is a fun surprise for readers, as well as for our brave hero, Patrick O'K. Himself! What will stick to readers' ribs most, however, are the illustrations.
Illustrated by Omar Rayyan, the book resembles now an illuminated manuscript, now a surrealistic painting. Faeries and other Fair Folk are mischievous creatures, to say the least, and to step into their world, however briefly, is to take a roller coaster ride into the ethereal and strange. Winged sprites flit too and fro, and the King has always about him a smile that is first playful and fun, and upon closer inspection, hinting at some darker purpose. Once Patrick has gone to their fair land, they are all about him, hiding here and there, yet the reader knows that they are invisible to everyone-another example of that mischievous, almost sinister magic they weave.
All in all, a tremendous book and perhaps too overlooked in the children's section. Though Irish in nature, it is not about St. Patrick's day, so there is no need to keep it mothballed until then! Bring out this treasure of a story and illustration and read it often!!The Ring of Truth Overview

William and the Magic Ring A Shadow Casting Bedtime Story ReviewMy son received this gift for his birthday and we are hooked. He and I have cast shadow after shadow on the wall. In addition, it's a good story with a good surprise at the end that provides some comfort. The words on the page are poetic. What more could you want in a childhood book. It's one to keep in your child's trunk so he can read it to his kids some day.
This would be a magical Christmas or birthday gift . It encourages quality time, something we all need more of in this busy world.

The Ring Bear ReviewThis highly original book by author David Michael Slater is a fascinating picture book that enthralled me from cover to cover, even as it captivated children all around the world. Published by Flashlight Press, one of my favorite children's publishing houses, the book is geared for children ages 4-8, a category I love to read.
The Ring Bear has a little bit of everything: love, joy, anger, fear, family unity, humor, adventure and much more. It deals with the serious subject of parental remarriage. The main character is a young boy named Westley who is used to his mother being a single parent and has adjusted to life without a father. His world is turned upside down when she decides to remarry.
In order to help her son with his objection to the marriage and assuage his anger and fear, his mother tells him he's going to be the ring bearer at the wedding--hoping this will make him feel more secure. Westley thinks she said "ring bear," so he comes to the wedding dressed as a bear and tries to scare everyone away.
That's when the problems--and the fun--begin. What happens then? How do the wedding guests react? How do his mother and Stan, his future stepfather, take it? Is there a happy solution to this problem, a situation that sadly happens more and more often in today's world? If so, how does it happen? Will the troubled boy finally come to realize how much his mother loves him and learn to trust her? And what does Stan do to break the ice with Westley?
Obviously, I can't tell you any more without spoiling the plot, but I can tell you that despite the serious theme, this is a book that has many giggles for you and your little ones. It's a warm-hearted book that will tug at your heart-strings ... as you cry one minute, laugh the next.
Slater makes his characters so believable you will feel like you are there with them, and no one will be able to forget the mischievous, yet endearing Westley. The colorful, charming illustrations by talented artist S. G. Brooks enhance the story-line, helping bring it even more alive.
This unusual wedding adventure is a touching book which will be helpful for children whose parents are remarrying. I recommend it highly. If you feel the same, look for Grandfather's Wrinkles, Grandpa for Sale, and Carla's Sandwich ... other releases by this same popular publisher whose editor has the uncanny ability to know what children enjoy reading.

Ring of Bright Water ReviewThis book has been a favorite of mine for years. Maxwell exceeds at conveying deep personal emotion, and this book is suffused with the joy he felt during his first few years with his otters Mij and Edal.
Fans of this book should take pains to search for the two out-of-print sequels: "The Rocks Remain" and "Raven, Seek Thy Brother". Neither is as joyful or cohesive as "Ring", but you will indeed find out what the life of a reclusive-yet-famous nature writer can be like. I also highly recommend Maxwell's autobiography of his childhood, "The House of Elrig".Ring of Bright Water Overview

Tree Ring Circus ReviewWhat do you get when you mix a seed in the ground three miles out of town with nature, a runaway clown named Pogo, and thirty-three animals? Tree Ring Circus!
Lyrical and melodious with a splash of whimsy, Adam Rex artfully intensifies the action as one seed grows into a tree full of circus animals...until the elephant shows up. The illustrations are masterful and fun and they incorporate the text flawlessly--yet maintain the circus feel. Not only do the readers see the action corresponding to the text, they also get frames of what happens between the pages, adding dimension to the story.
This is a delightful read-aloud that will be accompanied with exclamations of, "Read it again, Mommy!" And Mommy will want to.

The Raven Ring: A Lyra Novel ReviewThe Raven Ring is one of my favorite books. It was the first book I read in the "Shadows over Lyra" novels, and discovered it was a stand-alone book. This can be your first Patricia C. Wrede book, but it will make you want to read more.
The Raven Ring is about a young woman, Eleret, who goes to visit the city of Ciaron to collect her dead mothers belongings. There, she discovers many people who are interested in the raven ring her mother owned. With the help of her friend, the sly and witty thief Karvonen, and her guide/bodyguard/friend Lord Daner, she solves the mystery of the Raven Ring and finds love along the way.
The Raven Ring is a great book which has just the right amount of mystery, romance, and fun in it. Patricia Wrede is a great author. The Raven Ring is the kind of book you will want to have on your bookshelf to read over and over again. The Raven Ring: A Lyra Novel Overview

With This Ring, I Thee Dread: A Contemporary Romantic Comedy ReviewTypically people aren't forced into marriage in this day very often. But that did happen for Ryan and Elizabeth. Their harsh reality of being forced to marry and live together in the Alaskan wilderness for four months is appalling to both parties. Elizabeth hates Ryan for his behavior during grade school. Ryan hates Elizabeth for her coldness toward him. Both learn that there were other forces at work in their relationships and their hatred is replaced by friendship. Of course, it all works out in the end. It wouldn't be a romance novel if that didn't happen!
The book is a delight to read! It didn't take me long at all to get caught up in the story, eager to see what would happen with every turn of a page. Ruth Ann Nordin brings to light a rare situation where two people who are forced to be together do come around to like and even love one another. Her style is fun and exciting to read! I can't wait to delve into other works by this fun and exciting author! With This Ring, I Thee Dread: A Contemporary Romantic Comedy Overview
