J.R.R. Tolkien Collection (The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, Four Volume Set) ReviewThere have been innumerable depictions of JRR Tolkien's works in various media, but I feel that few would have met with the Professor's approval. The JRR Tolkien Collection created by BBC Radio is a rare exception. The radio dramatizations of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and the shorter works (Farmer Giles of Ham, Leaf by Niggle, Smith of Wootton Major, and The Adventures of Tom Bombadil) collected in Tales From the Perilous Realm have all been collected in this beautiful box set of 21 CDs with 20 hours of material. As a bonus the very fine JRR Tolkien: An Audio Portrait, which contains some of Tolkien's own interviews, has been included as well.
I just received this set for Christmas and I've just begun to enjoy them by dipping into the various CDs and listening to small bits and pieces. I anticipate many happy hours with them through the coming years. The acting and presentation is superbly done, and the listener recognizes that the production had to have been put together by people who were not only familiar with but deeply admiring of Tolkien's works.
I suppose what I like most about these radio dramatizations is that of necessity the listener must use his or her own imagination, and thus each person's experience of them will be almost as deeply individual as it is when actually reading the stories. In my opinion that's the best and indeed the only way to really appreciate Tolkien, and I think the Professor himself would agree.J.R.R. The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings (4 Volume Box Set) ReviewThis review is for regular size paperback only, as far as the books themselves, of course they're classics. Unfortunately Amazon links their reviews to multiple versions of the same product (meaning you can write a review for an audio book and that same review show up on a paperback edition of the same title. It's really bad for music reviews, let me tell you!).
If you should by this edition of HOBBIT/LOTR really depends on what you what for your money. I first purchased trade paperback editions of THE LORD OF THE RINGS back in the early to mid nineties. They're nice and more portable than, perhaps, other editions of the book if you looking for some quick reading on the beach/airport/wherever and they're economical.
However, these editions tend of have more misprints, are not as sturdy as other editions of Tolkien's classic texts, and the maps are just hell to look at. As any regular size paperback they are not as hardy as other, better found bound books.
The oversize paperback editions are better, but overall the books do not hold up as well or are durable as hard back editions. If you do want to read the stories though without having to worry about the shape the books are in then the regular paperbacks would be the way to go, as (for me anyway) I want to keep the nicer editions in relatively clean condition.
Given Tolkien's status of one of the world's most popular writers, I would recommend picking up nicer editions of these works anyway, as you can get them at reasonable prices and they are much better purchases than the paperback box sets. The only real drawback is there is no general uniformity between the editions of THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS that I recommend, if that is important to you.
Douglas A. Anderson's THE ANNOTATED HOBBIT, is the definitive text of THE HOBBIT, has numerous textual annotations and examines in complete detail all the different revisions Tolkien made to the work in the subsequent decades after its initial publication in 1937.
For THE LORD OF THE RINGS, the most accurate text is the 50th Anniversay edition prepared by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. I have the one volume oversize paperback edition of LOTR and am quite pleased with it.
The only way I would recommend purchasing the boxset of these books is if they published The Annotated Hobbit and the 50th Annivesary LOTR text as a uniform set as those are the definitive versions, and personally I'd prefer to see all four volumes hardbound. I don't think I've seen a hardbound version box set of all four works, though there are plenty to be had of LOTR.
In summary, unless you are wanting cheap editions of these books, you will be better served by purchasing other editions of Tolkien's books

As that was only in regards to these actual editions of Tolkien's work and not reviews of the books themselves, I am also including my separate reviews I have written for Amazon of THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Also included is an abandoned review I wrote for THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING all the way back in early 2000 but was never posted on Amazon, explaining how Tolkien's life work of THE LORD OF THE RINGS is NOT a trilogy but rather three parts of one work divided up for publishing purposes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE HOBBIT Review - Inferior to THE LORD OF THE RINGS? I think not! No, just different!, April 7, 2000
The biggest problem with this novel is perception. Tolkien wrote this story for children; to be more specific, this was written for HIS children. There were several stories like this, but it was this, The Hobbit, that was his master achievement in children's literature.
The Lord of the Rings ( a single epic, NOT a trilogy) was written to cash in on The Hobbit's success. Tolkien wanted to get on with the more serious work of his mythology, and ultimately that is what happened with The Lord of the Rings. It became attached to his mythology, and became as important to him as The Silmarillion.
So delineation is required if you want to read this. Do not go in with the thought that The Hobbit is a "precursor" or any such nonsense to The Lord of the Rings. Think of it like you would think of any other children's classics: children's classics. If you take it on The L. R.'s terms, this is a failure, primary because it is not written to be like that. But, on the flipside, The L. R. is as much a failure in children's fiction. It is not children's fiction, it is epic fantasy, and one should not equate it with children's fiction. That is EXACTLY what people try to do with The Hobbit. They try to put it in the same type of genre or playing field as The L. R. They are both masterpieces, and I love them both dearly. But one is for children, the other with adults.
Of course, Tolkien is part of the problem. How many books do you know that is a children's book and has an adult sequel? Not very many. The Hobbit, scarcely 300 pages, was written and published in the children's market. He then talked to his publishers, and they wanted a sequel. So he began "the new Hobbit", as C. S. (Jack) Lewis so aptly put it. He was preoccupied with his mythology, and the sequel was drawn into it. So we have two works, spanning two different genres, and as far as surface connections go its little more than prequel/sequel. Instead of looking at The Hobbit as a prequel, a precursor to his ADULT masterpiece, an inferiour version, think of as his CHILDREN'S masterpiece. The Hobbit is top of the class in children's fiction, one of the few contenders against such other great children's works as Narnia and Wrinkle in Time. The Lord of the Rings, likewise, is THE crowning masterpiece of the fantasy genre, of which its influence is incalculable to that fantasy market. Both are as important as the other, just in different fields.
I haven't talked about The Silmarillion much. I have already reviewed it, so I won't go real in-depth here. But the same thing happened with it. People, expecting another Lord of the Rings, were inevitably disappointed with the Biblical style of the published version. If Tolkien wrote that book out in narrative form as he did Lord of the Rings, it would be ten times longer than Lord of the Rings. The biggest problem with Tolkien is people have to many preconceptions that are incorrect.
So, basically, in conclusion, think of it like this:
1. The Hobbit - Children's masterpiece. He scores big with this one.
2. The Lord of the Rings - a single fantasy, not a trilogy. (Tolkien was always quick to point that out). The Crowning achievement of modern fantasy.
3. The Silmarillion - the Bible of Middle-earth. Much more for students of his work than the causal reader.

The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
***** Despite vehement critical hostility, Tolkien is among our most important writers because the way he handles Myth, 26 Sep 2007
Over the past several decades, THE LORD OF THE RINGS has sold millions of copies and is commonly regarded as one of the most influential fantasy novels ever published. Many first time readers have began their trek into Middle-earth with Frodo and the Company of the Ring in recent years. What they will encounter there has been loved by millions of readers before them, and if they allow themselves to respond to Tolkien and his Myth will doubtless become a loyal and ardent fan of Tolkien and those furry-footed hobbits. What's also notable about THE LORD OF THE RINGS is, for a book as long as it is, many of its readers reread the novel many times over. Yet despite its enduring popularity, Tolkien is often held in complete disregard by the literary establishment.
The real question is why? In the literary climate that is characterized by modernism and post-modernism where the twentieth and twenty first century is a wasteland why does a "series" of fantasy novels become one of the most beloved works in modern times?
It's because the power of myth over the human imagination works wonders, creating a longing and a hunger that, Tolkien argues, is met by the Christian religion. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis are the flip-sides of the same coin, with Lewis giving us accounts of the longing and Tolkien providing the books that would create that longing. And what about the longing? It's that longing for Myth, that love for those beauties which Tolkien shows us in THE LORD OF THE RINGS. It's that longing that sets man apart from all other creatures in the universe: a craving for beauty and for joy. The German word for this longing is "senhsucht". In a time characterized by fast-food, cell-phones, materialism, superficiality, the account of a Hobbit working against all odds in a mythic landscape so captures the human imagination (and this is NOT hype) that an entire genre is created. It is because of how Tolkien so masterfully handles Myth that he has been so highly treasured by such a large fan base.
Still, there are a few things to consider when reading Tolkien nowadays. Looking over the reviews, it proved rather shocking to me that people have been complaining that, although it was original when it was published, much of what Tolkien has done has become cliche and that other writers are much better working with these cliches and making them more exciting than Tolkien. They complain about his "endless descriptions" of the natural world, very detailed accounts of geography and not enough "characterization." The characters are unrealistic: the "human drama" required by the book's very nature is beyond Tolkien's scope as a writer. THE FELLOWSHIP...Read more›The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings (4 Volume Box Set) Overview

The Lord of the Rings - Part I - The Fellowship of the Ring ReviewMost people coming to this review already have a good idea what the story is all about from either other readers or people who have seen the movies made from this three part story. This is not a trilogy the three-part story so you can buy the individual books but it might be prudent to buy all three at the same time or a combined volume.
The reason I say buy the complete "Lord of the Rings" now is that you will just be picking up speed and getting everything straight in your mind and you will come to the end of this volume. Talk about a cliffhanger. This animal leaves you with several.
Even though the adventure takes place six years after the adventures in Tolkien's "the Hobbit or There and Back Again", the writing style is also a little more in-depth.
I am not going to paraphrase the story. J.R.R. Tolkien himself tells you what you need to know in the prolog.
Many people have read things into this story thinking it was maybe an allegory of things like the bomb; but Tolkien says himself that this is not an allegory.
Tolkien creates a rich world in which you the reader will feel you are part of the adventure. If you've only seen the movies than you've only seen a synopsis and you will not be disappointed in this book. The Lord of the Rings - Part I - The Fellowship of the Ring Overview

The Lord of the Rings ReviewWhile the price of this book is steep, this is easily the best version of this book in print. The gilded pages and high-quality leather look, smell and feel wonderful. This is not the questionable quality leather used on previous versions, this is the real deal. More importantly, this version has, as J.R.R. recorded in letters, reproductions of the Book of Marzubul. These are the pages from the Dwarven book found in the Mines of Moria by Gandalf and the Fellowship. In the begining and ending of the book are also included maps that fold out to render Middle-earth for the reader, again as the author originally wanted.
This is the book that Tolkien dreamed of having published but couldn't due to the realities of post-WWII publishing costs and questions about a 400,000 word publication.
For me, there is an emtoional response to this book for two reasons. One, it is as fine or better than the book the author originally wished to have published and two, it is a beautiful piece of art all on its own, suitable for display. If you love books or love Tolkien or both, this is a must have and the centerpiece of any worthy collection.
(Some are commenting that the book isn't actually leather. Be sure to check your version as there are others available, but the information provided to me stated my copy was leather and if it is fake, it fooled me.)The Lord of the Rings Overview

Understanding Tolkien and the "Lord of the Rings" ReviewAs a student and employee of Marquette University, I am grateful to William Ready for his foresight in acquiring the Tolkien manuscripts. But as far as understanding Tolkien's work -- Ready does not. The research is sloppy, there are factual inaccuracies, and his understanding of the role of Catholicism in Tolkien is faulty. This is probably the single worst piece of Tolkien literary criticism that I have ever read.Understanding Tolkien and the "Lord of the Rings" Overview

The Fellowship of the Ring (Lord of the Rings (Pb)) ReviewI am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!The Fellowship of the Ring (Lord of the Rings (Pb)) Overview

Ideas of Heaven: A Ring of Stories ReviewJoan Silber's Ideas of Heaven is really a terrific collection. Each of these first-person narrative stories is just wonderful, not a weak link in the bunch. Many times, I feel that a short story is a bit of an emotional letdown, but not in the case of these stories; each is emotionally rewarding. Never will you wish that a story was a little longer, or had a bit more for you. The writing here is excellent; the stories, compelling. Silber makes it a little bit more interesting by linking each story to the ones surrounding it as placed in the book. Well done. I highly recommend this collection, even if you generally shy away from short fiction.Ideas of Heaven: A Ring of Stories Overview

Ring of Lies (Jewel of the Night) ReviewThis book boasts a multitude of interesting ingredients: two engaging characters who are perfectly matched, a priceless gem, several sinister bad-guys and a phenomenally cranky cat -- all in all, a great combination that makes for a very entertaining read. A fast-moving adventure plot, this story still manages to incorporate a heartfelt and honest love story.
When Ivy Michaels is called away from putting the finishing touches on her new restaurant to deal with the murder of her Aunt Fey, she finds herself embroiled in a mystery over two decades in the making. A safety deposit box key in her aunt's overturned, vandalized apartment leads Ivy to an envelope containing a collection of seemingly random receipts and some family jewelry -- and apparently leads the same men who ransacked her Aunt's apartment to Ivy. She turns to security specialist Dominic Riordan to keep any further intruders out. The attraction between them is immediate and unmistakable and, just this once, it looks like Ivy's luck with men might have changed.
But Dom has plenty of secrets of his own, and he knows far more about Ivy's new ring than he is willing to share. When it becomes apparent that the men who want the ring back are willing to kill for it, Dom and Ivy have to work together to uncover a long-cold murder and a cover-up that will have irreparable repercussions for them both.
Even though she has her fair share of flaws, Ivy is a very likeable character. She is warm and friendly without being helpless, and strong enough to be Dom's equal, both in fighting off bad guys and in their relationship. Her childhood with her aunt left her with a number of hang-ups about men, which become blatantly evident as her feelings toward Dom grow, and which slowed down the story a bit, but she has the courage to overcome them, and the bravery to do what is right, for her and for Dom.
After meeting Ivy's cat, it isn't surprising that she was attracted to Dom. Sergeant Pepper bites, and is generally dreadful to everyone but Ivy, with whom he is a big, loyal, fluffy furball.
When we first meet Dom, he comes across as bitter, arrogant and very, very angry, mostly with Ivy's godfather, congressional candidate James Brogan. Thinking that Ivy's relationship with Brogan is of a much more romantic nature, his intentions towards her begin as far more mercenary than romantic, especially when he sees her new ring and thinks she is involved in a crime he has tried to years to crack. It is only later in the story that it is revealed that he became a cop to solve his mother's murder, and that Ivy's godfather was responsible for getting him kicked off the force before he could do so. So, while his hostility and distrust are understandable, it took me a while to warm up to him.
Ivy is a perfect foil for him, however, and brings out his better nature from the very first. As his attraction for her moved from the physical to the personal, it became easier to see what drew Ivy to him and why she is willing to fight for, and alongside, him.
There is very little "mystery" in this mystery story. The answers to the main questions surrounding the ring are obvious to the reader long before they are to the characters, which makes for a frustrating read at times, especially when the identity of the villain lurking in the shadows is revealed in the first third of the book. It felt rather like, in order to get to the action, some of the opening scenes were glossed over, which made for some confusion, but not enough to spoil my enjoyment.
The book has the feel of a hard-boiled detective novel, with Ivy as an admirably competent damsel-in-distress and Dom as her hard-boiled detective heartthrob. The dastardly exploits that caused Ivy and Dom such trauma are neatly solved and their own relationship resolves a little quickly, but the excellent characterization and great sense of place make up for any structure problems the story may have. One can only say they put their crime-fighting talents to use, as it would be great to read about their future adventures!

Wind of War (Legend of the Five Rings: The Four Winds Saga, Book 2) ReviewWind of War was a huge disappointment. The author seems to have a very weak grasp of Rokugani society and custom. In fact, take out all of the bowing and references to katana and yari and this story could have taken place anywhere. There is no sign of the complex system of etiquette that governs all social interactions in Rokugan. The Scorpion Clan provides the story's villains but the characters behave nothing like the Scorpions of previous novels. Their leader is a buffoon, easily intimidated, short of temper and extremely heavy-handed - the complete opposite of what one would expect from a Bayushi lord. It is absurd to think that a political mastermind like Hantei Naseru would have anything to do with such a man. The Scorpion clan mandate to protect the empire at all costs, even if it means the sacrifice of their honor is disregarded and these samurai are reduced to nothing more than a band of thugs and extortionists. The plot revolves around Akodo Kaneka but does nothing to advance the story of the conflict between the Four Winds. In fact, the late emperor's other children do not even appear in the novel and only Naseru is even mentioned by name. Kaneka spends the entire novel defending a village of poor farmers from their Scorpion oppressors. The book is full of combat scenes that go on for pages but do nothing to advance the plot (in one scene, seven pages are devoted to a fight between Kaneka and a gang of thugs). The author frequently repeats himself (Lord Zuto is constantly narrowing his eyes and Kaneka is always rolling his shoulders and stretching his neck). Perhaps the most upsetting thing about this book is that the author clearly did not do his homework. Besides failing to capture the feel of Rokugan's complex society, there are events in this book that contradict events that have already taken place in previous novels of the series. For example, in The Steel Throne the Water Dragon dumps Hatsuko at the feet of a cowering Akodo samurai and commands him to care for her. For some reason, the author feels compelled to retell this part of the story, but in his version, Hatsuko shows up at the Akodo stronghold with a hand-written note explaining her circumstances. Did the author not read the previous novels? And how did this get by the folks at Wizards of the Coast? Are they not concerned with the quality of these stories? The Four Winds are potentially interesting characters and their struggle for Toturi's throne could make for an excellent series of novels. This potential is wasted however, if each character is handled in a vacuum as in this novel. What a shame!Wind of War (Legend of the Five Rings: The Four Winds Saga, Book 2) Overview

The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (Cliffs Notes) ReviewAlthough it is not a substitute for these four great books (there are so many errors and things like that), this Cliff Notes edition is a pretty good read for a fan of the books or a person struggling with them. It is a lot better than the Barron's Book Notes, to say the least. First, The Hobbit summary is really good. Except for a few minor inaccuracies, this is a very good summary of the Hobbit, probably the best one out there. Even the LOTR one is okay, except for they use all kinds of politically correct terms (Black Riders are Dark Riders), and other miscillany (the Hardy dude does not even mention where Bilbo is going, until the Rivendell part). So, if you need help with the books, this will suffice. Also of note: the whole part in the back about the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Ages is really a summary of the Silmarillion. Go figure. The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (Cliffs Notes) Overview

The Power of the Ring: The Spiritual Vision Behind the Lord of the Rings ReviewI was more than pleasantly surprised at Stratford Caldecott's The Power of the Ring. I began reading the book in order to become more formally knowledgeable about opinions surrounding Tolkien's vast work, and I finished reading the book for pure pleasure. Caldecott takes the reader through specific aspects of Tolkien's world in relation to Christian, and more specifically Roman Catholic, beliefs. He discusses not only themes in The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, but also the Silmarillion and other Tolkien essays as well. However, even the reader who is not necessarily familiar with the less-familiar Tolkien works will find this book accesible and an enlightening read. Caldecott does a superb job of not assuming the reader has absolute knowledge of Tolkien's work while still avoiding summarizing. He provides a perfect blend of Tolkien's own statements, ideas from some of Tolkien's good friends, textual evidence and personal theory to demonstrate Tolkien's more subtle themes surrounding light, death, imagination, etc. that Tolkien perhaps wanted to make in his work. I have gained a deeper understanding of and greater aprreciation for Middle Earth through the reading of this book. Any reader interested in learning more about Tolkien and his own thoughts on his series should consider reading this book, even if a person does not have Christian beliefs. The book will simply allow one to look deeper into Middle Earth and realize there is a lot more present in the many threads that may be sited upon a first, or even fifth reading.
Also, Caldecott provides a relatively short and yet intriguing review of the Peter Jackson films which was fascinating and also a good read for people interested in motivation behind certain film decisions. The Power of the Ring: The Spiritual Vision Behind the Lord of the Rings Overview

The Lord of the Rings 1st (first) edition Text Only ReviewAs a long time Lord of the Rings fan,.... I have had the paper back set for years... I saw this set and immediately ordered it... To start with, the presentation of the set is excellent... The three books are delivered in a cardboard case that is covered in Allan Lee`s art work... The books themselves are 8x10.5 inches in size and are hefty in weight.. There is nothing like sitting and reading a book that has some weight to it... maybe just me, but reading a hardback over a paperback is the difference between night and day even if the words are identical. The type face is excellent and the artwork through out is images from Allen Lee.If you are reading this review, you are most likely already a Tolkien fan, so to review the book itself can be set aside as this set of books has probably been the most reviewed books in history. (save for he Bible of course). This set has a quality that is far above some of the other sets out there. I personally give this set 10 out of 10 and it has a special spot on my bookself.. Enjoy!!!The Lord of the Rings 1st (first) edition Text Only Overview

A Matter of Scandal (With This Ring, Book 3) (Vol 3) ReviewAfter plowing my way through hopelessly unimaginative, flat-ploted romance novels lately, imagine my utter surprise at discovering that Suzanne Enoch's latest release is a little jewel of delight!
Miss Emma Grenville is a lively, spirited and spunky heroine who knows her own mind and is not afraid to stand up for her beliefs. In fact, in a an era ruled solely by men, she has managed to uphold herself with carving out a career as a headmistress of a girls' Academy. However, her whole world turns upside down when an arrogant and dashing rake known as Greydon, the Duke of Wycliffe storms in and threatens her position as a headmistress and dismisses all her teachings as nothing but calculating husband trapping tricks.
Greydon is at his wits end, trying to dodge from attentions of countless simpering debutantes and their matchmaking mamas. So, when he receives urgent summons from his uncle in the country, it is none too soon for he is desperate to get away from London and its exasperating ton. Upon his arrival, he learns that his uncle's estate is in dire condition and desperately needs his intervention...However, in order to accomplish this feat, he finds himself dealing with one of the most stubborn, impossible creatures; otherwise known as Miss Emma, the headmistress of the blasted, dreaded girls' Academy. And the worst thing of all is that she's totally immune to his charms! He is the bloody Duke of Wycliffe, after all!...Women pursue him endlessly...so, what's amiss here?
What follows is an absolutely hilarious and engrossing regency romp, in which the utterly arrogant and rakish duke is thoroughly reeducated in female vurtues...and learns the folly of falling hopelessly, head-over heels in love with the only female who dared to defy him...
Although the central focus of the novel is the romance between the h/h, there are also wonderful portraits of friendship, devotion and the importance of loyalty.
For those readers that are already acquainted with Miss Enoch creative work, you'll be delighted to revisit with Alexandra and Vixen, the heroines of the previous installments of this trilogy - "Reforming a Rake" and "Meet Me at Midnight" - and their illustrious spouses - Lucien and Sinclair.
However, if you have not read these previous novels, it is not necessary to do so. "A Matter of Scandal" perfectly stands on its own and the characters are well thought out and fully developed. Although the previous two were also enjoyable, this one outshines them both!
Even though this particular plot line has been done numerous times before, in the clever and talented hands of this author, it exudes wit and originality. The story evolves very naturally and the reader is deeply drawn into it and effortlessly falls in love with both the hero and heroine. The passion and sensuality aspects of the novel are done with supreme taste and delightfully evoke all the senses.
Meet a score of delightful and unforgettable characters such as Jane, Lizzy, Tristan, Viscount Dare (whose story I truly hope is next!) and Georgina along with other significant friends, well-wishers and villains...
One point of warning, though: the constant antics and witty, humorous dialogue in this book will bring forth a bout of giggles, snickers and silly grins...So, if you read it in public, you might draw some attention to yourself :-)
I truly enjoyed this book, and I hope you do too. This one definitely goes on the keeper shelf!A Matter of Scandal (With This Ring, Book 3) (Vol 3) Overview

The Postman Always Rings Twice ReviewI spent some time trying to find out why this potboiler turned literature is called "The Postman Always Rings Twice" since at no place in the novel is a postman even mentioned. At first I thought it might be an echo of Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, dreamt up by Knopf, Cain's publisher, to lend some literary pretension to a novel they weren't sure about; but that play wasn't written until some years after Postman was published in 1934. It was recently suggested to me (by Joseph Feinsinger, one of Amazon.com's best reviewers of literature) that it might be a rejoinder for the saying "opportunity knocks only once," which was the sort of pabulum given to out of work people during the depression. Cain's original title was "Bar-B-Que," which is entirely appropriate for a couple of reasons (the café, the burning car), but was perhaps a little too morbid for Knopf's sensibilities.
At any rate, the title finally chosen is somewhat magical as is the novel itself, the first of Cain's hard-boiled, loser tales that somehow caught the imagination and psyche of depression America. Re-reading the novel today one wonders why, but then again, I can see why.
First there's the raw sex with Frank forcing himself onto Cora, biting her lip, etc. and she loving it, that was somewhat shocking for its time. Ditto for the spontaneous sex they have in the dirt outside the car after Frank has beamed Nick. Then there is the fascination we have with stupid people doing vile deeds rather clumsily (with whom we might identify). But more than anything else it's the style. Cain raised the dime novel to something amazing with his no nonsense, no time to chat, no description beyond the absolutely necessary--a pared-down to raw flesh and bones writing style that made even some of the icons of literature sit up and take notice. Edmund Wilson, long the dean of American literary critics, was intrigued by the novel, as was Franklin P Adams who called it "the most engrossing, unlaydownable book that I have any memory of." (Quoted from Paul Skenazy's critical work, James M. Cain (1989), pp. 20-21). And Albert Camus said that his internationally famous masterpiece The Stranger was based in part on Postman. The alternate English title, "The Outsider," perhaps reveals its debt to Cain more clearly. Today the sex seems rather tame and the terse style seems almost a burlesque, having been so often imitated. I personally think that Cain, who was a one-time editor of The New Yorker and a relatively sophisticated literary man, was actually taking Hemingway's primer-prose style to its logical conclusion by simply cutting out all of Hemingway's poetic repetitions and anything else that didn't move the plot.
Well, how well does this stand up after almost seventy years? It was made into two movies, a 1946 version starring John Garfield and Lana Turner and a 1981 version starring Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange, which you might want to compare. You can read the novel faster than you can watch either movie. I read it in an hour and I'm no speed reader. There was also a play and, believe it or not, an opera. The atmosphere is suburban naturalistic, set in the environs of Glendale, California, just north of L.A. where there really are (or mostly were) oak trees. (The name of the café is the Twin Oaks.) The story is a little confused in parts, and a little unlikely elsewhere (Cora really would not be such an adept at gun toting, and the Frank would not be so quick to fall for the D.A.'s line of chatter and turn on Cora, nor could Nick be quite so blind to the hanky-panky going on behind his back). But what Cain got so, so very right was the underlying psychology. This is a classic triangle, the old guy with the resources who can't cut the mustard anymore with a young wife who longs for love, a little excitement and to be rid of "that greasy Greek." Even deeper (and this is characteristic of Cain) is the suggestion that Nick encouraged Frank and kept him around, using his presence to spice up his own libido. Furthermore, Frank is a kind of depression-era anti-hero, who beat up on the hated railway dicks, the kind of guy who has become a film noir staple, a man who acts out his basic desires in an amoral, animalistic way. I see woman. I take woman. I eat when I'm hungry, drink when I'm dry, and sleep when I run out of gas, a kind of natural man on the run, the kind of guy we think we would like to be for a change (a brief change) in our daydreams around two p.m. on a blue Monday afternoon.
Cain followed this up with Double Indemnity (using some insurance fraud research he had left over). Double Indemnity appeared as a serial in Liberty magazine after being rejected by Redbook. It was also made into a classic Billy Wilder movie starring Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray and Edward G. Robinson in 1944 a year after it finally appeared in book form.
Cain, along with Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Nathanael West and later Ross MacDonald created a kind of southern California milieu that Hollywood has mined again and again with such postmodern films as, e.g., Chinatown (1974) and L.A. Confidential (1997). Read this (during lunch) for its historical value as a precursor of film noir and the hard-boiled detective novel. The Postman Always Rings Twice Overview

Brass Ring ReviewAs a devoted Diane Chamberlain fan, I have read every one of her novels. This one was particulary intense and compelling. Diane deals realistically with the fallout from sexual abuse and survivor guilt. Sisters Claire and Vanessa share sharply different memories of summers spent with their grandfather, who was in the process of restoring an antique carousel. Claire has nothing but happy memories of lazy summer days spent with her beloved grandfather. Vanessa, after overcoming drug and alcohol addiction has become an activist for molested children. Claire does not understand why her sister Vanessa will have nothing to do with her.
Claire is witness to a suicide that triggers flashbacks that she doesn't understand. With the help of the victim's brother, she uncovers the terrible truth about her grandfather and her perceived role in her sister's trauma.
Claire's struggle to come to grips with her memories, her guilt, and her attempts to make amends with her sister will touch the hearts of anyone who hold themselves responsible for causing unspeakable pain to someone they truly love.
Highly recommeneded!Brass Ring Overview

J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) ReviewEveryone knows the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings are wonderful stories, and I fully agree. The reason for my bad rating of this PARTICULAR edition of JRR Tolkien's works is that the books are riddled with typographical errors, some so severe that they change the meaning of sentences, effectively reversing the author's intent. One example: "The Breelanders locked their doors at night, which was also not unusual in the Shire." The word "unusual" should have been "usual"--i.e., the Shire Hobbits don't usually lock their doors at night. But exactly the opposite idea is conveyed by this typographical error! And there are many more errors where that one came from. I counted THREE errors on ONE PAGE! AVOID THIS EDITION at all costs!J.R.R. Tolkien Boxed Set (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) Overview

The Wolf Ring (an erotic/erotica paranormal romance) ReviewNo SPOILERS or plot summaries. Recommendations included.
HIGH LEVEL: This is a short story that reads like the opening chapters of an over-dramatized paranormal romance. There was some magic: magical ring, legend of werewolves come to life in a whimsical way. Overall, however, it was pretty unsatisfying.
SEXUAL CONTENT: While it is labeled as "erotic" - there was really only one scene of lust and it was just OK. It was sexy in a desperate kind of way, but felt incomplete.
PLOT & CHARACTERS: Not really much plot and the story was so short that pacing was irrelevant. Mostly this was just incomplete. It read like a vignette, not a story. The characters were undeveloped, though the man was intriguing. It might have been fun to get to know him better through a longer story.
BOTTOM LINE: This story is one word: HARMLESS. Nothing really to it, but nothing terribly against it except that it was too short. If this had been developed into a real book, it might have turned out to be "just ok." As it is, though- not worth reading.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Vivian Arend's Wolf Signs: Granite Lake Wolves, Book 1 fun, light were-romance series
2. Vivian Arend's Tidal Wave: Forces of Nature, Book 1- with frolicking dolphins
3. Dana Marie Bell's Dare to Believe (The Gray Court) - sexy, humorous para-romance with all manner of fae: Sidhe, dragons, leprechauns, vampires and more
4. Kresley Cole's slightly more adventurous and intricate magical romance series (never mind the ridiculous title): A Hunger Like No Other (Immortals After Dark, Book 1)
5. Jacquelyn Frank's Jacob (The Nightwalkers, Book 1) - demons, were, vamps and other fae finding their better halves in races that should be the enemy
6. Marie Harte's Rachel's Totem - lighter, less developed para-erotica featuring a variety of shifters in a quirky little town
7. Moira Rogers' basic werewolf romance series: Cry Sanctuary: Book 1 of Red Rock Pass series
8. Moira Rogers' magically diverse romance series Crux: Southern Arcana, Book 1
9. Nalini Singh's Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changelings, Book 1) - romance series which features weres and psychics, but also carries plotlines with some substance
10. Sydney Somers' gargoyle spin on romance: Primal Hunger: Pendragon Gargoyles, Book 1The Wolf Ring (an erotic/erotica paranormal romance) OverviewWhen Conner gives his girlfriend an antique ring, things between them get unexpectedly... wild.Warnings: Explicit sex, blunt languageLength: Short story (7200 words)
