Spirit of the Samurai: Of Swords and Rings ReviewIn the Seattle suburbs Grandfather raised his two grandchildren, fourteen years old David and thirteen years old Kat Anderson with four simple kind rules on treating and respecting others and one other, the adult mantra to obey him that that he expects both to follow. However, recently David has been constantly angry at his younger sister and has even instigated fights though her martial arts training usually overcomes his brute strength advantage. However this time he attacks her from behind and it takes Grandfather's intervention to stop him.
When David enters their Grandfather's dojo without permission, Kat follows. He shows her a book that provides the history of Japanese Samurai, especially about two rival clans, the Toho and the Black Rings, that fought one another. Grandfather arrives, but David insists on learning the truth as he says they are descendents of Toho and the kid wears three of the four Black Rings that he also found. Finally David touches the Swords of Toho and Hiro of the Black Rings. Whereas David becomes possessed with evil, his sister touches the Toho sword and becomes the last guardian battling against her sibling who wants her dead; on her side is Grandfather and Kyosha the Samurai who has just arrived claiming to be her Father.
Targeting elementary school children, this is an action-packed Samurai fantasy starring a young female teen whose opponent in a life and death struggle is her older brother. The story line is filled with action while illustrations enhance the first-rate plot. David's nastiness comes out before he is possessed so young readers will root for Kat to defeat him during their sibling battle.

Opportunity Rings: A novel ReviewA hilarious book that caught my attention from the beginning. The author's writing style is funny and the book is easy to read. As a woman, I could relate to the events and the dilemmas the main character went through. Personally, I found her to be quite motivating because she's a career woman and managed to get over challenging situations in life (i.e. a cheating husband). It makes you realize that it's not the end of the world if something goes wrong; you'll get back on your feet and things can be good again (hence the title).
The book is very much like 'Sex and the city' and is therefore quite appealing to women. I got hooked on this book quickly and would definitively recommend this to others. Looking forward to read more of Sheryl Steinberg's books.Opportunity Rings: A novel Overview

The Brass Ring ReviewThis book can serve a multitude of uses to a multitude of readers: A "sort of" history of WWII; the story of how a young man from humble and poor beginings won a pulitzer prize for editorial cartooning, how an aspiring cartoonist gained national recognition and how other aspiring cartoonists may go about becoming recognized themselves. Highly entertaining with one of the most humorous and climactic endings I have ever had the pleasure to read. The Brass Ring Overview

New Mangaverse: The Rings of Fate ReviewMarvel's "New Mangaverse" is about as far from the "real" Marvel Universe as you can get. The copy of "Rings of Fate" that fell into my hands apparently comes after a great deal of backstory in previous volumes, but even without that background material, I enjoyed the tale.
Things are going badly for the costumed set in the Mangaverse. Spider-Man and Spider-Woman, a pair of young ninjas from the Spider Clan, are among those dodging a worldwide assault on heroes. And this isn't some half-hearted effort by cackling villains; the good guys are dying in droves. New allegiances are forming, new heroes are rising from the ashes and, through it all, the main characters maintain the cheerful and perky enthusiasm that marks a lot of the manga I've seen.
Of course, being manga, the women are all small-bodied, big-breasted and possibly underage, but hey, if you don't like that sort of thing don't pick up a book with the word "manga" on the cover.
This Mangaverse will never replace the main and Ultimate Marvel universes in popularity, I think, but it's fun, refreshing and, dare I say it, cute. It's a nice change, a treat to read and I certainly wouldn't mind coming back for another visit.

Y: The Last Man, Vol. 5: Ring of Truth ReviewIn the fifth trade paperback of Brian K. Vaughan's Y: The Last Man, we finally see Yorick's girlfriend Beth for the first time since the first story arc, we get a glimpse into Hero Brown's troubled past, a new girl named Beth complicates things with Yorick, and the reason that Yorick and Ampersand survived the plague is revealed.
In the story arc "Tongues of Flame", Yorick goes to a church in order to repent for the girl he killed in the previous arc. While there, he meets Beth, a girl who has become the de facto caretaker of the church. They comfort each other and provide company that each desperately needs. Yorick also helps her deal with a group of Amazons.
In "Hero's Journey", we see scenes from Hero's past, which was fairly traumatizing. From feeling neglected by her parents to being afraid of her grandfather for dark (and implied) reasons to overcompensating sexually for a bad case of acne, we are able to see why the Amazons were so successful at brainwashing her. We also learn what happened to her between her "incarceration" in Marrisville and her situation now.
Finally, in "Ring of Truth", having finally reached California, Yorick, Agent 355, and Allison try to isolate the reason why Yorick and Ampersand survived the "gendercide", but things get complicated when some ex-Culper Ring agents show up. And just as the answer is revealed, a mysterious ninja named Toyota kidnaps Ampersand again (she was responsible for his kidnapping in "Comedy & Tragedy").
This may be the best Y trade paperback yet. While "Safeword" may be the best arc, these three arcs are all very good and very intriguing. The story only continues to get better, and the next leg of the journey of Yorick Brown, the last man on Earth, should prove to be very interesting indeed.Y: The Last Man, Vol. 5: Ring of Truth Overview

Ex Machina, Vol. 9: Ring out the Old ReviewWhen I started reading Ex Machina, 6 trades had come out and I read through them quickly. I loved it. Since then, I have had to wait about half a year for each trade and because of that, I often forget what has been going on and have a hard time loving the series as much as I did the first time. With this trade, I didn't have that problem. The comic starts with a fun "meta" issue with Brian K. Vaughan and Tony Harris written into the story. Then it has another one shot issue about paper. The next four issues (41-44) are the heart of it, the issues that give the book its name. They are fantastic. We get to know more back story about Mitchell, we get teased about how he got his powers, we get a cool villain and the politics heat up as Mitchell is continuing his pragmatic style of governing.
This comic got me very excited about the conclusion that comes up in November in trade format (the final issue comes out in June or July). The comic has shown us three years of government and the last six issues will focus on the last year (2005). With the introduction of new villains, the political pressure and the mysterious outside forces, I am eagerly awaiting the final chapter.Ex Machina, Vol. 9: Ring out the Old Overview

The Ring of Ikribu (Red Sonja, No. 1) ReviewThis is a refreshing book for those who are tired of the same old cliche' in fantasy novels ( strong muscle bound oaf takes on the world). It centers on a beautiful, flame tressed woman who happens to be intelligent( heaven forbid!) She is one Red Sonja and she is fantastic reading. Check this out, you won't be dissapointed. The Ring of Ikribu (Red Sonja, No. 1) Overview

With This Ring: A For Better or For Worse Collection ReviewEnter within and witness the saga of Michael and Deanna's wedding. For all of you who have lived through weddings as a bride, groom or immediate family, you will easily identify with all the wedding preparations, conflicts and joys. The only thing I regreted while reading it was how grown-up Michael has become. However, I just pulled out an older book by Lynn and revisited. But think....only a great author can make you care about characters so much that you hate to see them "grow up." Cheers to Lynn and please keep them coming! With This Ring: A For Better or For Worse Collection Overview

Doomed by Cartoon: How Cartoonist Thomas Nast and the New York Times Brought Down Boss Tweed and His Ring of Thieves ReviewBefore there was Fox News, YouTube and "Saturday Night Live," there was Thomas Nast, whose devastating caricatures in Harper's Weekly helped produce Boss Tweed's downfall. And in "Doomed by Cartoon: How Cartoonist Thomas Nast and The New-York Times Brought Down Boss Tweed and His Ring of Thieves" (Morgan James, $19.95), John Adler, a self-described amateur historian, along with Draper Hill (himself a political cartoonist), present Nast's work in serialized comic book form.
The New York Times reports that "Nast's drawings are fleshed out by an informative and engaging narrative that credits his impact without overlooking his political incorrectness. The caricatures are a vivid reminder that both campaigns and political commentary have, for the most part, gotten tamer."Doomed by Cartoon: How Cartoonist Thomas Nast and the New York Times Brought Down Boss Tweed and His Ring of Thieves Overview

The Book of Five Rings from SmarterComics ReviewPictures say a thousand words. Here you have a dynamic way to learn strategy from one of the best martial artists in history. I love the concept. I love the way it's presented, in beautiful color. I love the bullet-points presented to the back-drop of what each speaks to. This is treasure just as art, but 100-fold for what it teaches. I highly recommend this to everybody. I'm a big fan.The Book of Five Rings from SmarterComics Overview

Superman: The Black Ring Vol. 2 ReviewSuperman the Black Ring volume 2 picks up right where the incredible first volume left off, Luthor at the mercy of Vandal Savage (seemingly) while in the middle of his quest to harness the power of the black spheres.
Volume 2 is a bit slower paced and lacks the chemistry of the interactions Luthor has with the DCU's most notorious as he did in volume 1. The interactions felt stretched and lackluster at times. This collection does not suffer from it, however, it pales in comparison with the first volume. On it's own it's a very good story about a character in the DCU who deserves to be the spotlight of a storyline more often with a very satisfying conclusion. Some readers may be put off by a chapter that looks at two very unique confrontations Luthor has at a younger age, or at a "hairy" moment in his life. The interactions belittle what will be Luthor's first encounter with Superman (pick your origin: secret origin, birthright, man of steel, new 52, etc...) by taking away what sparked Luthor's jealousy of Superman. These "early" pre-Superman encounters make Luthor too powerful too soon. I felt so anyways. They are cool encounters, though.
A variety of artists lend their talents to this collection. Regular artist Pete Woods does the bulk of the work, to a satisfying degree. The covers by David Finch are amazing!
Overall, the end of a great epic with the bald one who wants nothing more to be earth's true Superman.Superman: The Black Ring Vol. 2 Overview

Superman: The Black Ring Vol. 1 (Superman (Graphic Novels)) ReviewSuperman: The Black Ring, volume 1 collects Action Comics #890-895, all originally published in 2010. Continuity-wise, the story takes place after Blackest Night and the Superman: New Krypton saga, but overall it is fairly self-contained (in fact, it seems to ignore the events of New Krypton altogether). Like other recent DC hardcovers, the production quality is barely passable: medium-gloss paper, unfinished boards, and a sloppy application of glue (my copy makes a funny noise whenever opened--indicating insufficient glue along the interior cover). DC has also continued their practice of omitting issue numbers, which will annoy some serious collectors.
Story-wise, The Black Ring features a post-Blackest-Night Lex Luthor as the central protagonist, accompanied by an android Lois Lane. Together, they hunt the globe for residual "black ring" energy, in the process encountering Mister Mind, Gorilla Grodd, Vandal Savage, and even Death (from Neil Gaiman's Sandman). Deathstroke also makes a minor appearance. Paul Cornell's story is imaginative, compelling, and darkly funny--the freshest plot to grace a Superman book since Geoff Johns's Superman: Brainiac. The art, provided primarily by Pete Woods, fits the story well. His Luthor--seemingly modeled after Michael Rosenbaum's Luthor for Smallville--is a much more expressive and human-seeming Lex than is typical.
Ultimately, Superman: Black Ring is a must read for Superman fans and casual readers alike. If only DC could fix the quality of their hardbacks, this would be a perfect buy.Superman: The Black Ring Vol. 1 (Superman (Graphic Novels)) Overview
