Hobbits, Elves and Wizards: The Wonders and Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" ReviewAs a scholar who has studied and taught J. R. R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy for twenty-five years, there are very probably very few better qualified to write an introductory book on the subject than Michael Stanton. He's obviously a great fan on the book (that is, he does not seem to be simply trying to cash in on the recent popularity that the movies have caused) and writes in a simple, chatty style that is easy for most non-academics to understand. For those who are more experienced in reading essays and critiques, "Hobbits, Wizards and Elves" may come across as either too simplistic or repetitive - and I admit that there was very little here that I hadn't already come across in more comprehensive essays on this subject.
But Stanton is well aware of this, and has no delusions about what it is that he's writing - in fact on many occasions he encourages other authors that go deeper into the text, and often apologises for his `bare-bones' treatment of the subject. To like the author's own voice makes up a great part of one's enjoyment of these exploratory books, and there's nothing pretentious or overtly opinionated in Stanton's techniques.
In saying that however, this is a book for beginners to the world of Tolkien - long time studiers or fanatical fans will know all this stuff already - and probably through their own readings of the book. Yet for those starting out, or those that need a helping hand in grasping the finer details of Tolkien's great work, this is a readable and clear-cut `helpmeet' to "the Lord of the Rings".
In Part One of the book Stanton gives us a (very) brief biographical account of Tolkien's life and his inspiration for the book, and the publishing history, followed by a chapter devoted to the geography, history and themes that make up Middle-Earth. The bulk of the book is taken up with accounts of the six books that make up the complete "Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King." This is perhaps the most interesting part (at least for me), as he explores the meanings and finer details of the chapters and the events and characters within them.
Part Two divides up the `species' of Middle Earth and explores their cultures closer: Elves, Dwarves, Ents, Humankind (including Hobbits) and the forces of evil are all discussed separately, and then finally Tolkien's use of language (undoubtedly the basis of the entire saga) and the use of dreams and spirituality throughout the story.
Lastly comes a chapter on the Peter Jackson version of "the Fellowship of the Ring" that is enthusiastically advertised by the publishers on the front cover: "includes a new essay on the first part of "the Lord of the Rings" film trilogy!" As it turns out, this is the most unnecessary parts of the book, and I couldn't help but feel that Stanton was either coerced into doing this for the benefit of sales, or was simply a little `pet-project' of his that he wanted to sneak in. As it is, it is not an `essay' at all, but simply a list of opinions concerning the movie that nearly verges into being a movie review. As you may have guessed, the absence of Tom Bombadil and the role of Arwen are mentioned, as are a few other little nitpicks, but at least Stanton appreciates Sean Bean's role as Boromir - a performance that I believe is often overlooked by viewers.
He's not afraid to criticise certain portions of the book (he points out that only three of five wizards sent to Middle Earth are identified, and that Tolkien puts the title of `oldest living thing in Middle Earth' on two separate characters: Tom Bombadil and Treebeard), and to go against popular fan speculation (in his opinion the `unsung hero' of the story is not Samwise Gamgee, but Prince Imrahil) but on the whole you can tell that he simply adores Tolkien's work and has read it multiple times.
He also points out some interesting titbits that are obvious in hindsight, but which were overlooked by me in my own reading of "Lord of the Rings" - such as the fact that Pippin is the only character in the book to directly converse with Sauron.
It is not a thick book, nor a very deep one, but it is interesting nonetheless and would be valuable to those just beginning to explore Tolkien's world. I've been exploring for a few years now, and I still found some interesting theories and explanations - but then I brought this book at the University's book store for only two dollars, so I'm hardly going to take a harsh view of something brought so cheaply. Any one well-versed in Tolkien's universe has more comprehensive works to explore, but beginners are most welcome here.Hobbits, Elves and Wizards: The Wonders and Worlds of J.R.R. J.R.R. Tolkien Collection (The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, Four Volume Set) ReviewThere have been innumerable depictions of JRR Tolkien's works in various media, but I feel that few would have met with the Professor's approval. The JRR Tolkien Collection created by BBC Radio is a rare exception. The radio dramatizations of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and the shorter works (Farmer Giles of Ham, Leaf by Niggle, Smith of Wootton Major, and The Adventures of Tom Bombadil) collected in Tales From the Perilous Realm have all been collected in this beautiful box set of 21 CDs with 20 hours of material. As a bonus the very fine JRR Tolkien: An Audio Portrait, which contains some of Tolkien's own interviews, has been included as well.
I just received this set for Christmas and I've just begun to enjoy them by dipping into the various CDs and listening to small bits and pieces. I anticipate many happy hours with them through the coming years. The acting and presentation is superbly done, and the listener recognizes that the production had to have been put together by people who were not only familiar with but deeply admiring of Tolkien's works.
I suppose what I like most about these radio dramatizations is that of necessity the listener must use his or her own imagination, and thus each person's experience of them will be almost as deeply individual as it is when actually reading the stories. In my opinion that's the best and indeed the only way to really appreciate Tolkien, and I think the Professor himself would agree.J.R.R. Le Seigneur Des Anneaux: Volume 2 (Lord of the Rings (French)) (French Edition) ReviewThere must be something wrong with Amazon or with the other reviewers (who are reviewing Harry Potter), because this page is for Tolkien's novel The Two Towers (see the book cover and information), which has nothing to do with the Harry Potter novel. They are very different. The Lord of the Rings is the best fantasy story ever written. The Ring of Allaire ReviewWith master magician Blais dead, murdered by the evil wizard Nimir, bumbling apprentice Tristan was all that was left to carry on Blais' last quest - to find and awaken the princess of Allaire and thus save all of Calandra, or to fail and doom the kingdom to eternal winter. Tristan felt ill equipped to rescue the princess, especially after hundreds of heroes and wizards, all better trained than he, had died in the attempt. But Tristan loved his master too much to do nothing less than his very best so he started with the basics that the others discounted. The first thing that Tristan had to recover was the legendary warhorse of Esdragon, Valadan, who had disappeared long ago. Then he had to persuade the Heir to the Throne, Polassar, that his was not a fool's errand, but a true chance at victory to save the kingdom. After he had gathered his companions, then Tristan had to find the location of the sleeping princess, somehow awaken her, find the tenth ring that was needed for the princess to use her powers, fight off jealous wizards, Nimir's Ice Hounds, and whatever other complications came along the way....
The Ring of Allaire is in many ways a simple fantasy tale retold, but in other ways it is new, fresh and fun. There are also plenty of little surprises to keep the reader guessing, even though some things seem obvious to the reader before it is revealed in the book. But, Dexter's characters are delightful and so fun to get to know and to travel with. I love that Tristan tries really hard and sometimes succeeds and sometimes doesn't, but he always tries. He seems like such a normal person and it is refreshing for the nice, normal guy to get ahead for once, instead of the brave, dashing hero. A fast, fun read that kicks of a delightful trilogy - I highly recommend all of Dexter's books! The Ring of Allaire Overview

Treacherous Bonds And Laughing Fire: Politics And Religion in Wagner's Ring ReviewWagner wanted to write music for the revolution. Mark Berry reminds us of this in an exciting new book that catapults us back to the heady turmoil of nineteenth-century political thought. Wagner was using the ancient myth of the Ring to dramatise the struggle of deadening powers of technology, economics, law and bourgeois morality with the eternal human spirit of freedom and love. Mark Berry's treatment of this shows he is the most important new person writing today about Wagner. Anyone wanting to think seriously about Wagner and his milieu must read Berry's important new book.Treacherous Bonds And Laughing Fire: Politics And Religion in Wagner's Ring Overview

The Flame Weaver ReviewEven from the very first page, The Flame Weaver pulls you in. The prologue sets the tone for how the author expresses detail, but it also foreshadows the action that is yet to come.
The story's main character, Kazen, grows over the course of this book. Confident without being overbearing, intelligent without being too perfect, you want to root for him and his friends as they proceed along their quest. And their quest is hectic indeed.
One of Elicker's greatest abilities is the way she paints the scenery and actions with her words. It's very intriguing, and it draws you in. Luckily, the world she creates is an ideal home for your imagination.
I am anxiously awaiting a sequel to this story. While it ends perfectly, there are hints that more can be told. Hopefully I don't have to wait too long! The Flame Weaver OverviewGood and evil, quarrelsome lovers loathly joined since the beginning of time. The never-ending push and pull of these two forces have always been in perfect balance. But when a scheming wizard with an insatiable appetite for power foolishly opens a gate to the shadow-world, the lands are flooded in darkness, and hordes of terrible demons are unleashed upon the innocent. Kingdom after kingdom falls to the icy shadow, muffling the cries of the dying as it presses ever westward, its advance slowed only by the tall peaks of the Pale Mountains, which separate the eastern lands from the west. On the far side of the mountains, where the light still shines, people muddle through their everyday lives oblivious to the approaching doom. But as the darkness grows nearer, a young man named Kazen is awakened to a secret past. With the help of his uncle, a powerful wizard, Kazen discovers a magic within him he never knew he had. A rare conjurer of fire, Kazen learns he may be the only one able to turn back the tide of darkness. But time is running out, for once the living shadow passes over the mountains, its evil will be unstoppable. Joined by a small band of brave companions, Kazen sets out on a desperate quest across demon-infested lands. But no creature born of light can enter the darkness unscathed. The shadow knows their fears, and before the end their courage will be tested as they are forced to face the ghostly fiends of darkness.

The Lord of the Rings (Wood Box Edition): (wood box) ReviewDespite the fact that this is shown as being published in 2001, the copyright dates first from 1954. There is a reason that other versions have come out since this one: this one isn't good.
There are different readers for different characters, and some of the voices are really jarring. Frodo, to my ear, is completely wrong. In addition, it is poorly abridged. One of the most remarkable things about Middle Earth is how wonderfully imagined it is; all of the details are described so lovingly. Not in this version. Here, almost everything is dialog, so you are given little idea of what anything looks like. Some of the most cherished quotations (for me, at least) are mangled. In all, very disappointing. I remember hearing the BBC's dramatization years ago on radio and thinking it was wonderful job on very difficult material. I certainly wouldn't say that of this version. The Lord of the Rings (Wood Box Edition): (wood box) Overview

The Lord of the Rings Poster Collection: Six Paintings by Alan Lee (No. 1) ReviewHaving never owned any of Alan Lee's LOTR artwork before, I bought this collection on the advice I had found in many places online. Needless to say, I was not disappointed.
It is true what is said about Lee's visual mastery of Tolkien's words. The images are often much like what I pictured from the books . . . even Gollum.
My only issue was with the scenes chosen to be depicted in the collection. Three of the six are from Mordor (Gates of Mordor, Gorbag & Shagrat, and from the foot of Mount Doom), the artwork of which is not at all bad, but it is repetitive, when there is so much more. I'm most anticipatory to find Lee's depiction of the Ents somewhere. ^_^
The paper quality is good & thick, and the posters come in a glossy protective folder with information on the artist, text bits that were the basis for the paintings, etc.The Lord of the Rings Poster Collection: Six Paintings by Alan Lee (No. 1) Overview

Emerald Empire 4th Edition (Legend of the Five Rings) ReviewEmerald Empire is a great addition to anyone playing/GMing a L5R game. It includes a lot of information players and GMs can use to play more "authentically". It includes a good number of character options for players. It's a bit expensive, but it's a great quality product with (as usual for 4ED) outstanding artwork.
I would also like to add that AEG customer support is very helpful. My copy had weak binding and was starting to come apart, so I emailed AEG and they sent me a new copy of the book for free. Super classy.Emerald Empire 4th Edition (Legend of the Five Rings) Overview

The Great Clans - Legend of the Five Rings RPG 4th Edition ReviewThis book fills in a ton of gaps in the history that I had questions on, and I would basically consider this book to be an extension of the core book. It is mainly background information and setting details, with some character options built in for each clan. Some die-hard old-school L5R players think that it's a little bit short, considering how thick the L5R background is, but as a relatively new player, this is a vast amount of information to fill a campaign with.
As I said, I would consider this an extension of the core boo, and completely essential. The Great Clans - Legend of the Five Rings RPG 4th Edition Overview

Legend of the Five Rings 4th Edition RPG ReviewBuyers who are familiar with the Revised 3rd Edition may be reluctant to buy the 4th Edition. That's understandable. I was wary myself, but I am grateful I took the plunge and purchased 4th Edition. This makes up for many of the mistakes of the past while forging a new future.
First, the book looks very nice. The artwork is exceptional, and the layout is professionally done. The type is on the small side, but the contrast is good. The fact that the type is so small in a book so large gives you an idea of just how full of information this book is. I'm not a fan of the section headings (Book of Water, et al.), but it's a stylistic decision that simply isn't my cup of tea. Others may disagree. Certainly, it's nothing I'd dock point off of. There have been a few typos, but they are mild; nothing like previous editions!
The book is very robust. The world of L5R has several years of stories crammed into it, and it's simply impossible to fit everything into one book. Still, this book has the most vital parts, while leaving some areas open for GM interpretation or sourcebooks. You have what you need to start a campaign, though the book intentionally makes some things vague so that it'll fit in almost any L5R campaign.
The rules are also well done. I understand this book has undergone some rigorous playtesting, and the hard work is apparent. A lot of the power differences between comparable Schools have been toned down so that while one school clearly has an advantage, it's usually not a runaway. The rules have been retooled so that success is based more on the dice than on what Advantages and Schools you have. Static bonuses are an endangered species; if a character receives a set numerical bonus or a "Raise," then it is indicative of how that character is supposed to be really good at what he does. L5R veterans may recall saying things like "7k3 +30." You're less likely to hear it in 4th Edition.
Veterans of L5R will also notice other changes, mostly for the better. The five stances make combat more dynamic and tactical--without resorting to battle mats with 5-foot squares. The Wounds distribution makes it likely that a character can withstand a solid hit and grit through the pain, rather than spiral down into ineffectiveness; I believe the idea I heard is that, "Combat should not be determined by who rolled the best initiative," and I think the book succeeds here. Also, the list of Advantages and Disadvantages has been expanded, including being blessed (or cursed) by a major Fortune, being positively or negatively influenced by one of the spirit realms, and even epitomizing or rejecting an aspect of bushido (or even its opposite, shourido).
There are still some things I do not like. While I praise the designers for balancing the rules, I am bemused by the Dragon tattoo, which seems to be considerably ahead in the power curve. I also did not like the maximum number of Raises being limited to your Void (I thought 3rd Edition was a step forward by eliminating that). These are very minor disagreements, which can be easily changed in a home game if you feel like it. They may make me roll my eyes, but I wouldn't reduce my score because of them.
Another down side is the price. Once you see and feel the book, you can see where the money has gone. This is obviously not a basement print job. Some may argue that no book should cost this much, but most RPG books nowadays are on the pricy side. At least you get excellent artwork, well-thought-out rules, and a fairly low typo-to-page-count ratio (page count is 400 FYI). Considering the hours of entertainment you can derive from this book, the price is actually rather reasonable.
Finally, this book has made me do something for the first time: Run my own L5R home game. That is high praise indeed if the shelves full of dusty game books are any indication. I've purchase and read many game books, but I never take the serious step in running a game based on them. L5R 4th Edition has gotten me excited enough to hunt down players and begin a new campaign.Legend of the Five Rings 4th Edition RPG Overview

Lord of the Rings ReviewYou can purchase this book is some NewZealand stores and save carrying it with your luggage. I saw it at the airport. It was good at orienting you to where different scenes were shot. A head's up: Many places were used for background, while the action was shot in a studio or created on a computer. Also, many scenes in the movie feature scenes shot all over new zealand and since they are together in the movie you assume they are also together in real life. Example: when arwen rides away from the nazgul, the horse scene (shot with a double by the way) is in one area, the river she enters in another area, and the when she turns to face the nazgul, that river is yet somewhere else. I highly recommend the area around queenstown and glenorche.Lord of the Rings Overview

Unfiltered: The Complete Ralph Bakshi (The Force Behind Fritz the Cat, Mighty Mouse, Cool World, and The Lord of the Rings) ReviewIf all you know about Bakshi is his rotoscope pictures, you're in for a surprise. Ralph is one of the most innovative and wildly creative geniuses of recent times. His influence on animation is immense. On the back cover, Frank Frazetta is quoted as saying, 'Ralph Bakshi is one of the finest artists I've ever met.' He isn't exaggerating a bit.
If you are an artist working in animation, whether you know it or not, Ralph Bakshi is the reason you're here. Don't believe me? Throw your mind back to 1970. Look at what the animation business had turned into... Disney was cranking out Robin Hood, a film without a single new idea. On TV, Filmation was lowering the bar so Hanna Barbera could play 'quality limbo' with them. Animation was dying, animators were choosing retirement over flogging the dead carcass of the art form they loved, and it looked like it the situation would never get any better.
Enter Bakshi. With his first three films, he turned animation upside down. He showed that it wasn't just a medium for big bears with Phil Harris's voice and crappy sitcom characters in outer space. His films shocked and terrified people... they were crass and sloppy. They were made on a shoestring, and sometimes it showed. But they had something honest to say, and that got noticed. Ralph showed that animation- the most collaborative art form ever- could be an intensely personal medium.
Ralph's first three films- Fritz the Cat, Heavy Traffic, and Coonskin- came totally out of the blue. They are the animation equivalent of Louis Armstrong's Hot Fives. Great old time animators like Irv Spence, Ambi Paliwoda and Virgil Ross were offered the opportunity to cut loose and make films that weren't just cats chasing mice and dogs chasing cats. These films dealt with what it meant to be an artist, the battle of the sexes, race relations, and the unsenimentalized realities of urban life. They were improvisational and had no rules.
These three films, made in the darkest of the dark ages of animation, offered a glint of hope for what animation could become. If all you've seen of Ralph's work is Lord of the Rings and Fire and Ice you don't know what I'm talking about here. All of the adult targeted animation you see in the US today has its roots in Ralph's example in these three films. They stirred up controversy and caused riots at screenings back in the day, but now they seem to us like they could have been made yesterday, not three decades ago- except for the fact that today's world has trouble accepting brutal honesty when it comes to politically charged topics. Ralph has never been one to pull punches.
In the 1980s, Ralph did for television animation what he did for theatrical features, blowing the lid off of CBS's Saturday morning schedule with Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures. Ralph took a chance on the ideas of a kid named John Kricfalusi, and set up the studio after the unit structure model used at Warners. Artists were cut loose to create cartoons. Without Mighty Mouse, there never would have been Ren & Stimpy or The Simpsons. The artists who worked on Mighty Mouse have gone on to lead the TV animation industry. Ralph is an absolute genius when it comes to spotting raw talent. He can take a kid straight out of school and turn him into a pro faster than anyone else. Every film had its 'graduating class' of kids. Those kids now populate the animation business on every level, from the top Producer at Disney feature to the creative sparks at Warners. I know of Bakshi alumni who are top dogs at Dreamworks and the CGI companies too.
As a filmmaker, Ralph is one-of-a-kind. He doesn't make films for executives... he doesn't even make films for a specific audience. He makes them for himself. You can count the number of animators capable of using this unweildy medium for personal expression on one hand and still have fingers left. Ralph is one of them. But Ralph is not only the greatest living animation artist. He is the catylist that has more than once pulled the industry out of a hole so deep people had just about given up on cartoons. For that alone, he deserves the respect of any and all animators, whether they like his work or not.
If the animation business needs anything right now, it's another go round with Bakshi. The era of shi-shi 'distressed' animation desks complete with faux wormholes, and middle management producers driving Jaguars paid for by their bonus checks is over. That was great for the people lucky enough to hook up to the gravy train while it lasted. But times have changed. The people left standing will be the ones who REALLY CARE about the medium of animation.
You can take my word for the fact that no one loves cartoons more than Ralph. Read this book and hear him talk about Jim Tyer. (Ralph was Tyer's assistant...) Listen to what he has to say about Spence or Maltese or any of the other old timers he brought in to work on his films. Ralph lives and breathes animation. His drawings are imbued with the whole history of the medium. He announces his retirement every once in a while, and swears off cartoons forever, but it's in his blood. Just count the days till the bellowing voice out of the blue hollers 'BAKSHI'S BACK, YOU BASTUHDS!' over the studio intercom again.
It's time for Ralph to rent a warehouse, fill it full of kids with big dreams, raw talent and lots of ideas and crank out a film. It doesn't even matter if it turns out crappy. It'll be a shot in the arm to the whole business, and it just might lead to something even better. I know I'd love to be a part of it.
UNFILTERED: The Complete Ralph Bakshi isn't one of those 'art books' with postage stamp sized pictures floating in oceans of tasteful white space and huge text blocks of scholarly blather that crowds out the images. It's just pictures, pictures and more pictures... along with just enough text to put them in context. Artwork by Frank Frazetta, John Kricfalusi, Barry Jackson, Louise Zingarelli, Michael Ploog, Ian Miller, Irv Spence, Robert Dranko, Mark Kausler and Ambi Paliwoda. The book is organized to show Ralph's career from his earliest days at Terry-Toons, to his groundbreaking features, to his revolutionary TV work, to his most recent fine art paintings. BUY THIS BOOK!

Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch (Book 1) ReviewWow! What a fun read! The author really has a winner here. If you're looking for a fun romp through a magical world, then look no further. In this book, the author has put an original spin on the essence of magical powers, giving the story a fresh new twist. He also manages to blend the real and magical worlds in a unique way which helps you identify more closely with the main characters: they truly are as real as you and me (no need for a prized lineage or a high midi-chlorian blood count!). If you have kids who don't like to read, hand them this book. They will more than likely change their minds! Is this the next Harry Potter? Who knows, it certainly could be. Although it is a fun book for young and old alike, and full of magic, one thing it is NOT is "another" Harry Potter. This is a truly original story and a lot of fun to read. Once you start, and your internal movie projector gets going, you will quickly get attached to the characters and won't want to put the book (or should I say kindle?) down. There is one down side however: it appears we'll have to wait over a year for the next book! In the meantime, grab a copy, enjoy it, and spread the word!Dylan Murphy And The Magic Touch (Book 1) OverviewThis first book in what promises to be a great new series is a very engaging and entertaining novel in the fantasy genre. Guaranteed to entertain kids and adults alike, this book would be particularly memorable to enjoy as a family. The author's distinctive take on his magical and mystical world is unique, refreshing, and fun. The whimsical tale begins with two wizards battling it out over a supreme magical force which the evil and power-hungry one covets. Although injured in the fight, the magical essence manages to escape. It is accidentally transported off its home planet of Eldora and makes its way to Earth where, unbeknownst to the 16 year old Dylan Murphy, it merges with his body in order to heal and survive. Strange and wonderful things begin to happen as the unsuspecting young boy from Colorado begins to inadvertently invoke extraordinary new magical abilities from within. The evil sorcerer soon locates the magical essence, and deploys his minions to retrieve his prize. Opposing forces from the kingdom of Colabra are dispatched to protect the boy and the magical entity now living inside him. Before they know it, Dylan and a small group of friends are whisked away to the enchanted planet of Eldora and find themselves in a struggle to save each other and the planet from a powerful wicked foe. Full of action, adventure, and enchantment, this story takes you on a delightful ride across very real venues in the state of Colorado as well as some unique, beautiful, and strange lands on Eldora. If you enjoy fantasy books, you'll quickly become a Dylan fan as you accompany him and his friends on this incredible, supernatural journey.

JOURNEYS OF FRODO - AN ATLAS OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN'S 'THE LORD OF THE RINGS' ReviewDrawing upon Professor Tolkien's own well defined descriptions and maps Barbara Strachey has created a fine
volume of cartographic drawings of the routes taken by Frodo Baggins and the other members of the fellowship.
The maps are highly consistent and creative regarding Middle-earth topography and environmental realties.
Moon phases, rest stops, camping sites and important occurrences within the journey are all marked and noted
for a complete picture of the path's taken to destroy the ring of power and the struggle to save
Middle-earth.
This work contains fifty-one maps with detailed but brief(a usual page long) descriptions of the
country traversed , corresponding dates and text from novel for background and
footnoted for reference. This an impressive book allowing the reader to fully
inhabit and trace the epic journey of the company of nine in a relatively compact
collection to compliment Tolkien's own volumes. Though the author concentrates her
work depicted in THE LORD OF THE RINGS she has consulted and referenced for clarity
sake THE HOBBIT,UNFINISHED TALES and other Middle -Earth related material to
ensure a fuller account of said maps and drawings. Undoubtedly comparison's can
be made with another volume of cartographic pieces depicting J.R.R Tolkien's
creation; The Atlas of Middle- earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad, however this much larger
book covers a broader spectrum within Tolkien's sub -created world through
the ages and changes in the spheres. Ms Fonstad is a professional cartographer and her volume
shows it , Ms.Strachey is not a professional in the that field but her work while not as refined
a other is in my opinion can stand alongside the larger especially in regards to what it
provides in detail and execution. THE JOURNEYS OF FRODO is an engaging and vivid book.JOURNEYS OF FRODO - AN ATLAS OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN'S 'THE LORD OF THE RINGS' Overview

The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings (4 Volume Box Set) ReviewThis review is for regular size paperback only, as far as the books themselves, of course they're classics. Unfortunately Amazon links their reviews to multiple versions of the same product (meaning you can write a review for an audio book and that same review show up on a paperback edition of the same title. It's really bad for music reviews, let me tell you!).
If you should by this edition of HOBBIT/LOTR really depends on what you what for your money. I first purchased trade paperback editions of THE LORD OF THE RINGS back in the early to mid nineties. They're nice and more portable than, perhaps, other editions of the book if you looking for some quick reading on the beach/airport/wherever and they're economical.
However, these editions tend of have more misprints, are not as sturdy as other editions of Tolkien's classic texts, and the maps are just hell to look at. As any regular size paperback they are not as hardy as other, better found bound books.
The oversize paperback editions are better, but overall the books do not hold up as well or are durable as hard back editions. If you do want to read the stories though without having to worry about the shape the books are in then the regular paperbacks would be the way to go, as (for me anyway) I want to keep the nicer editions in relatively clean condition.
Given Tolkien's status of one of the world's most popular writers, I would recommend picking up nicer editions of these works anyway, as you can get them at reasonable prices and they are much better purchases than the paperback box sets. The only real drawback is there is no general uniformity between the editions of THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS that I recommend, if that is important to you.
Douglas A. Anderson's THE ANNOTATED HOBBIT, is the definitive text of THE HOBBIT, has numerous textual annotations and examines in complete detail all the different revisions Tolkien made to the work in the subsequent decades after its initial publication in 1937.
For THE LORD OF THE RINGS, the most accurate text is the 50th Anniversay edition prepared by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. I have the one volume oversize paperback edition of LOTR and am quite pleased with it.
The only way I would recommend purchasing the boxset of these books is if they published The Annotated Hobbit and the 50th Annivesary LOTR text as a uniform set as those are the definitive versions, and personally I'd prefer to see all four volumes hardbound. I don't think I've seen a hardbound version box set of all four works, though there are plenty to be had of LOTR.
In summary, unless you are wanting cheap editions of these books, you will be better served by purchasing other editions of Tolkien's books

As that was only in regards to these actual editions of Tolkien's work and not reviews of the books themselves, I am also including my separate reviews I have written for Amazon of THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Also included is an abandoned review I wrote for THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING all the way back in early 2000 but was never posted on Amazon, explaining how Tolkien's life work of THE LORD OF THE RINGS is NOT a trilogy but rather three parts of one work divided up for publishing purposes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE HOBBIT Review - Inferior to THE LORD OF THE RINGS? I think not! No, just different!, April 7, 2000
The biggest problem with this novel is perception. Tolkien wrote this story for children; to be more specific, this was written for HIS children. There were several stories like this, but it was this, The Hobbit, that was his master achievement in children's literature.
The Lord of the Rings ( a single epic, NOT a trilogy) was written to cash in on The Hobbit's success. Tolkien wanted to get on with the more serious work of his mythology, and ultimately that is what happened with The Lord of the Rings. It became attached to his mythology, and became as important to him as The Silmarillion.
So delineation is required if you want to read this. Do not go in with the thought that The Hobbit is a "precursor" or any such nonsense to The Lord of the Rings. Think of it like you would think of any other children's classics: children's classics. If you take it on The L. R.'s terms, this is a failure, primary because it is not written to be like that. But, on the flipside, The L. R. is as much a failure in children's fiction. It is not children's fiction, it is epic fantasy, and one should not equate it with children's fiction. That is EXACTLY what people try to do with The Hobbit. They try to put it in the same type of genre or playing field as The L. R. They are both masterpieces, and I love them both dearly. But one is for children, the other with adults.
Of course, Tolkien is part of the problem. How many books do you know that is a children's book and has an adult sequel? Not very many. The Hobbit, scarcely 300 pages, was written and published in the children's market. He then talked to his publishers, and they wanted a sequel. So he began "the new Hobbit", as C. S. (Jack) Lewis so aptly put it. He was preoccupied with his mythology, and the sequel was drawn into it. So we have two works, spanning two different genres, and as far as surface connections go its little more than prequel/sequel. Instead of looking at The Hobbit as a prequel, a precursor to his ADULT masterpiece, an inferiour version, think of as his CHILDREN'S masterpiece. The Hobbit is top of the class in children's fiction, one of the few contenders against such other great children's works as Narnia and Wrinkle in Time. The Lord of the Rings, likewise, is THE crowning masterpiece of the fantasy genre, of which its influence is incalculable to that fantasy market. Both are as important as the other, just in different fields.
I haven't talked about The Silmarillion much. I have already reviewed it, so I won't go real in-depth here. But the same thing happened with it. People, expecting another Lord of the Rings, were inevitably disappointed with the Biblical style of the published version. If Tolkien wrote that book out in narrative form as he did Lord of the Rings, it would be ten times longer than Lord of the Rings. The biggest problem with Tolkien is people have to many preconceptions that are incorrect.
So, basically, in conclusion, think of it like this:
1. The Hobbit - Children's masterpiece. He scores big with this one.
2. The Lord of the Rings - a single fantasy, not a trilogy. (Tolkien was always quick to point that out). The Crowning achievement of modern fantasy.
3. The Silmarillion - the Bible of Middle-earth. Much more for students of his work than the causal reader.

The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
***** Despite vehement critical hostility, Tolkien is among our most important writers because the way he handles Myth, 26 Sep 2007
Over the past several decades, THE LORD OF THE RINGS has sold millions of copies and is commonly regarded as one of the most influential fantasy novels ever published. Many first time readers have began their trek into Middle-earth with Frodo and the Company of the Ring in recent years. What they will encounter there has been loved by millions of readers before them, and if they allow themselves to respond to Tolkien and his Myth will doubtless become a loyal and ardent fan of Tolkien and those furry-footed hobbits. What's also notable about THE LORD OF THE RINGS is, for a book as long as it is, many of its readers reread the novel many times over. Yet despite its enduring popularity, Tolkien is often held in complete disregard by the literary establishment.
The real question is why? In the literary climate that is characterized by modernism and post-modernism where the twentieth and twenty first century is a wasteland why does a "series" of fantasy novels become one of the most beloved works in modern times?
It's because the power of myth over the human imagination works wonders, creating a longing and a hunger that, Tolkien argues, is met by the Christian religion. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis are the flip-sides of the same coin, with Lewis giving us accounts of the longing and Tolkien providing the books that would create that longing. And what about the longing? It's that longing for Myth, that love for those beauties which Tolkien shows us in THE LORD OF THE RINGS. It's that longing that sets man apart from all other creatures in the universe: a craving for beauty and for joy. The German word for this longing is "senhsucht". In a time characterized by fast-food, cell-phones, materialism, superficiality, the account of a Hobbit working against all odds in a mythic landscape so captures the human imagination (and this is NOT hype) that an entire genre is created. It is because of how Tolkien so masterfully handles Myth that he has been so highly treasured by such a large fan base.
Still, there are a few things to consider when reading Tolkien nowadays. Looking over the reviews, it proved rather shocking to me that people have been complaining that, although it was original when it was published, much of what Tolkien has done has become cliche and that other writers are much better working with these cliches and making them more exciting than Tolkien. They complain about his "endless descriptions" of the natural world, very detailed accounts of geography and not enough "characterization." The characters are unrealistic: the "human drama" required by the book's very nature is beyond Tolkien's scope as a writer. THE FELLOWSHIP...Read more›The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings (4 Volume Box Set) Overview

The Lord of the Rings - Part I - The Fellowship of the Ring ReviewMost people coming to this review already have a good idea what the story is all about from either other readers or people who have seen the movies made from this three part story. This is not a trilogy the three-part story so you can buy the individual books but it might be prudent to buy all three at the same time or a combined volume.
The reason I say buy the complete "Lord of the Rings" now is that you will just be picking up speed and getting everything straight in your mind and you will come to the end of this volume. Talk about a cliffhanger. This animal leaves you with several.
Even though the adventure takes place six years after the adventures in Tolkien's "the Hobbit or There and Back Again", the writing style is also a little more in-depth.
I am not going to paraphrase the story. J.R.R. Tolkien himself tells you what you need to know in the prolog.
Many people have read things into this story thinking it was maybe an allegory of things like the bomb; but Tolkien says himself that this is not an allegory.
Tolkien creates a rich world in which you the reader will feel you are part of the adventure. If you've only seen the movies than you've only seen a synopsis and you will not be disappointed in this book. The Lord of the Rings - Part I - The Fellowship of the Ring Overview

Shadow and Flame (Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game) ReviewThe other rewiew took the words right out of my mouth. This book is amazing. In my opinion its the best so far. I got the book today and finished it a few hours later and immediatly knew I have to write a review about it.
In book 11 of the Cirque Du Freak series (or the saga of Darren Shan) time has passed since Harkat and Darrens journey in book 10. Now working at the cirque where does the luck of the vampires lead him? Back to his home town! Darren is faced with difficult decicions, familiar friends, horrible truths, death and shocking events that will make you wish book 12 was already out!
I highly recommend this book.
