The Lord of the Rings Instrumental Solos: Clarinet (Book & CD) ReviewIf you have a middle shooler in band that loves the Lord of the Rings Movies and plays clarinet, this book will get them playing more. The tape helps if you are an ear musician.
Our only reservation was about how the clarinet is generally buried in the original score and how it would sound as a solo instrument. Basically, there are some numbers where the clarinet picks up a solo by an oboe or flute but they picked songs where it works, along with some pieces they feature that sound like they have clarinet in them orginally. The rohan and black rider songs in particular sound kind of exotic with the clarinet featured as a solo piece.
If your kid watches the movies over and over, probably this book will get them more stoked about band, but my kid practices a lot anyway, so it's hard to say.The Lord of the Rings Instrumental Solos: Clarinet (Book & CD) Overview

Lord of the Rings ReviewYou can purchase this book is some NewZealand stores and save carrying it with your luggage. I saw it at the airport. It was good at orienting you to where different scenes were shot. A head's up: Many places were used for background, while the action was shot in a studio or created on a computer. Also, many scenes in the movie feature scenes shot all over new zealand and since they are together in the movie you assume they are also together in real life. Example: when arwen rides away from the nazgul, the horse scene (shot with a double by the way) is in one area, the river she enters in another area, and the when she turns to face the nazgul, that river is yet somewhere else. I highly recommend the area around queenstown and glenorche.Lord of the Rings Overview

Lord of the Rings Instrumental Solos Violin Book: With Piano Accompaniment & CD ReviewThis is a wonderful score book for violin with piano accompaniment. Inside there is a removable section with just the violin sheet music and it comes with a cd with a demo and back-up music to play along with. I truly recommend this for anyone who plays violin. I enjoy the Lord of the Rings, but I also feel that the music is beautiful on its own.Lord of the Rings Instrumental Solos Violin Book: With Piano Accompaniment & CD Overview

The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King Strategy Battle Game ReviewI believe that this rulebook makes a nice addition to the two previous rulebooks: Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. As with the previous two rulebooks, it gives you all of the general movement and combat rules with an additions of some new rules.
A general overview of the table of contents as follows:
1. Introduction to the Game Rules
- In case this is your first copy of a LOTR rulebook, they cover all of the basic game rules such as: How the game turns work, the move phase, the shooting phase, the fighting phase and cavalry.
2. Advanced Rules
- Some of the advanced rules cover Courage, Heroes, Weapons, Banners and Forces.
3. The Free Peoples
- You are given a list of all the good heroes and warriors in the ROTK expansion.
4. Forces of Darkness
- This section lists all of the evil heroes and warriors and also provides setup details for 12 different scenarios.
5. The War of the Ring
- This section provides information on some of the good heroes, assembling the miniatures, painting your models, making terrain, and the gaming hobby itself.
Overall, you have a little bit of the same information in the beginning as you receive in the previous two rulebooks, but there are all new ROTK pictures of models used in presenting the information and all of the new scenario's and stats provided for all of the new ROTK miniatures makes this a helpful addition to the previous two rulebooks. The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King Strategy Battle Game Overview

Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings: A Guide to Middle-Earth ReviewColin Duriez's "Tolkien and the Lord of the Ring: A Guide to Middle Earth" is an impressive book about the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, and the Silmarillion. It's divided into 4 parts.
Part 1: The Mind Behind Middle-earth: Includes background info about Tolkien, his life and work.
Part 2: The Book of the Century: A guide to LOTR, how it relates to the Silmarillion, etc. Basically a recap, in case you're a bit fuzzy.
Part 3: An A-Z of Tolkien's Middle-earth: I found this very helpful; I could look up my favorite people, places, events, and things quickly and effortlessly. This is especially helpful for those currently reading either LOTR or the Silmarillion to get extra info on what they're reading. If you are intimately familiar with the books, however, it would be more reference than new facts.
Part 4: A Look Behind Tolkien's Life and Work: Most interesting part to me. Evaluates key themes, concepts, and images in Tolkien. Allegory (or lack thereof), Christianity, Posession and Power are some of the themes explored by Duriez. Then it talks about key people and places in Tolkien's life.
It's more geared to people who are more interested in the book and Tolkien's writings than in the recent movies, so it shouldn't be confused with books like, "The Magical Worlds of Lord of the Rings."
I recommend it to anyone interested in Lord of the Rings.Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings: A Guide to Middle-Earth Overview

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (Prima's Official Strategy Guide) ReviewI haven't played many games of this type, but I'm a huge Tolkien fan so I decided to try the game. I have to be honest-I couldn't even get out of the Shire ( the first level) until I bought this guide! I ended up using it religiously along the way, because there were many sections where I wouldn't have had any idea what I was supposed to do otherwise. For instance, there's a section in Moria where, without the guide, I would *never* have figured out where I was supposed to go, even though I religiously explore every nook and cranny when playing these types of games.
Once I bought the guide, it took me about a week to finish the game. Since then, I've decided to play it again, without referring to the guide, to see if I can make it all the way through by memory.
The book is very comprehensive, and avoids using terms that the casual gamer wouldn't understand-it doesn't talk over your head, and it's very straight forward and easy to understand. The screen shots are helpful, so that you can see what sections of the game they're referring to.
As a little added perk, this book, while showing you all of the ins and outs, still leaves a couple of tiny goodies out-not essential ones, just a couple little perks, so it still pays to explore as much as possible to see if you can find them. To me, that added to the fun, and I didn't feel like the book was doing *all* of the work for me. For instance, the book doesn't mention that, if you can find Gollum, you can get a little treat from him!
I highly recommend this game guide; in fact, I'm off to the bookstore today to pick up Prima's game guide to another LOTR game! The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (Prima's Official Strategy Guide) Overview

The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (Prima's Offical Strategy Guide) ReviewI bought this book just to help me out on Minas Tirith - Top of the Wall - because I couldn't figure out exactly what I was supposed to be doing. I did refer to this book a couple of times along the way. I have just finished the game and re-playing some of the levels with different characters just for fun. If you are having any kind of trouble with this game, this guide offers some good tips. It is excellent at showing you how to beat all the bosses and finding missed items and offers some good strategies for each level. If you don't want to read any hints, then don't read the next few sentences. The guide book tells you how to defeat the Nazgul at the "Black Gate" with Aragorn. If you are having too much trouble doing this (as I did), change your character to Gandalf. Gandalf's magic arrows do ten times more damage to the Nazgul than if you use Gimli, Aragorn, or Legolas. The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (Prima's Offical Strategy Guide) Overview

The Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook: Extended Edition ReviewIt has been interesting reading the reviews of my book. As a Tolkien fan for the last 32 years I wanted people to enjoy the scenery of New Zealand as it relates to Middle-earth.
Certainly there are more than 3 locations easily accessible. In fact, 90% of the locations listed in this book are accessible by car. There are very few (about 6) that are only helicopter accessible.
The GPS co-ordinates are listed to enable some fans to find the exact spots. They have been checked to within 5 metre accuracy.
The book is not intended as a travel guide to NZ, hence the sparseness of maps. I would recommend any visitor purchasing a good NZ atlas as well.
My major disappointment with this book is the small pictures - but the book is a guide to allow people to pit it in glove-boxes or backpacks.
A much larger coffee-table version will be released later this year with more pages and much bigger pictures. The Lord of the Rings Location Guidebook: Extended Edition Overview
