Hobbits, Elves and Wizards: The Wonders and Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" ReviewAs a scholar who has studied and taught J. R. R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy for twenty-five years, there are very probably very few better qualified to write an introductory book on the subject than Michael Stanton. He's obviously a great fan on the book (that is, he does not seem to be simply trying to cash in on the recent popularity that the movies have caused) and writes in a simple, chatty style that is easy for most non-academics to understand. For those who are more experienced in reading essays and critiques, "Hobbits, Wizards and Elves" may come across as either too simplistic or repetitive - and I admit that there was very little here that I hadn't already come across in more comprehensive essays on this subject.
But Stanton is well aware of this, and has no delusions about what it is that he's writing - in fact on many occasions he encourages other authors that go deeper into the text, and often apologises for his `bare-bones' treatment of the subject. To like the author's own voice makes up a great part of one's enjoyment of these exploratory books, and there's nothing pretentious or overtly opinionated in Stanton's techniques.
In saying that however, this is a book for beginners to the world of Tolkien - long time studiers or fanatical fans will know all this stuff already - and probably through their own readings of the book. Yet for those starting out, or those that need a helping hand in grasping the finer details of Tolkien's great work, this is a readable and clear-cut `helpmeet' to "the Lord of the Rings".
In Part One of the book Stanton gives us a (very) brief biographical account of Tolkien's life and his inspiration for the book, and the publishing history, followed by a chapter devoted to the geography, history and themes that make up Middle-Earth. The bulk of the book is taken up with accounts of the six books that make up the complete "Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King." This is perhaps the most interesting part (at least for me), as he explores the meanings and finer details of the chapters and the events and characters within them.
Part Two divides up the `species' of Middle Earth and explores their cultures closer: Elves, Dwarves, Ents, Humankind (including Hobbits) and the forces of evil are all discussed separately, and then finally Tolkien's use of language (undoubtedly the basis of the entire saga) and the use of dreams and spirituality throughout the story.
Lastly comes a chapter on the Peter Jackson version of "the Fellowship of the Ring" that is enthusiastically advertised by the publishers on the front cover: "includes a new essay on the first part of "the Lord of the Rings" film trilogy!" As it turns out, this is the most unnecessary parts of the book, and I couldn't help but feel that Stanton was either coerced into doing this for the benefit of sales, or was simply a little `pet-project' of his that he wanted to sneak in. As it is, it is not an `essay' at all, but simply a list of opinions concerning the movie that nearly verges into being a movie review. As you may have guessed, the absence of Tom Bombadil and the role of Arwen are mentioned, as are a few other little nitpicks, but at least Stanton appreciates Sean Bean's role as Boromir - a performance that I believe is often overlooked by viewers.
He's not afraid to criticise certain portions of the book (he points out that only three of five wizards sent to Middle Earth are identified, and that Tolkien puts the title of `oldest living thing in Middle Earth' on two separate characters: Tom Bombadil and Treebeard), and to go against popular fan speculation (in his opinion the `unsung hero' of the story is not Samwise Gamgee, but Prince Imrahil) but on the whole you can tell that he simply adores Tolkien's work and has read it multiple times.
He also points out some interesting titbits that are obvious in hindsight, but which were overlooked by me in my own reading of "Lord of the Rings" - such as the fact that Pippin is the only character in the book to directly converse with Sauron.
It is not a thick book, nor a very deep one, but it is interesting nonetheless and would be valuable to those just beginning to explore Tolkien's world. I've been exploring for a few years now, and I still found some interesting theories and explanations - but then I brought this book at the University's book store for only two dollars, so I'm hardly going to take a harsh view of something brought so cheaply. Any one well-versed in Tolkien's universe has more comprehensive works to explore, but beginners are most welcome here.Hobbits, Elves and Wizards: The Wonders and Worlds of J.R.R. J.R.R. Tolkien Collection (The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King, Four Volume Set) ReviewThere have been innumerable depictions of JRR Tolkien's works in various media, but I feel that few would have met with the Professor's approval. The JRR Tolkien Collection created by BBC Radio is a rare exception. The radio dramatizations of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and the shorter works (Farmer Giles of Ham, Leaf by Niggle, Smith of Wootton Major, and The Adventures of Tom Bombadil) collected in Tales From the Perilous Realm have all been collected in this beautiful box set of 21 CDs with 20 hours of material. As a bonus the very fine JRR Tolkien: An Audio Portrait, which contains some of Tolkien's own interviews, has been included as well.
I just received this set for Christmas and I've just begun to enjoy them by dipping into the various CDs and listening to small bits and pieces. I anticipate many happy hours with them through the coming years. The acting and presentation is superbly done, and the listener recognizes that the production had to have been put together by people who were not only familiar with but deeply admiring of Tolkien's works.
I suppose what I like most about these radio dramatizations is that of necessity the listener must use his or her own imagination, and thus each person's experience of them will be almost as deeply individual as it is when actually reading the stories. In my opinion that's the best and indeed the only way to really appreciate Tolkien, and I think the Professor himself would agree.J.R.R. Le Seigneur Des Anneaux: Volume 2 (Lord of the Rings (French)) (French Edition) ReviewThere must be something wrong with Amazon or with the other reviewers (who are reviewing Harry Potter), because this page is for Tolkien's novel The Two Towers (see the book cover and information), which has nothing to do with the Harry Potter novel. They are very different. The Lord of the Rings is the best fantasy story ever written. The Lord of the Rings (Wood Box Edition): (wood box) ReviewDespite the fact that this is shown as being published in 2001, the copyright dates first from 1954. There is a reason that other versions have come out since this one: this one isn't good.
There are different readers for different characters, and some of the voices are really jarring. Frodo, to my ear, is completely wrong. In addition, it is poorly abridged. One of the most remarkable things about Middle Earth is how wonderfully imagined it is; all of the details are described so lovingly. Not in this version. Here, almost everything is dialog, so you are given little idea of what anything looks like. Some of the most cherished quotations (for me, at least) are mangled. In all, very disappointing. I remember hearing the BBC's dramatization years ago on radio and thinking it was wonderful job on very difficult material. I certainly wouldn't say that of this version. The Lord of the Rings (Wood Box Edition): (wood box) Overview

The Lord of the Rings Poster Collection: Six Paintings by Alan Lee (No. 1) ReviewHaving never owned any of Alan Lee's LOTR artwork before, I bought this collection on the advice I had found in many places online. Needless to say, I was not disappointed.
It is true what is said about Lee's visual mastery of Tolkien's words. The images are often much like what I pictured from the books . . . even Gollum.
My only issue was with the scenes chosen to be depicted in the collection. Three of the six are from Mordor (Gates of Mordor, Gorbag & Shagrat, and from the foot of Mount Doom), the artwork of which is not at all bad, but it is repetitive, when there is so much more. I'm most anticipatory to find Lee's depiction of the Ents somewhere. ^_^
The paper quality is good & thick, and the posters come in a glossy protective folder with information on the artist, text bits that were the basis for the paintings, etc.The Lord of the Rings Poster Collection: Six Paintings by Alan Lee (No. 1) Overview

Lord of the Rings ReviewYou can purchase this book is some NewZealand stores and save carrying it with your luggage. I saw it at the airport. It was good at orienting you to where different scenes were shot. A head's up: Many places were used for background, while the action was shot in a studio or created on a computer. Also, many scenes in the movie feature scenes shot all over new zealand and since they are together in the movie you assume they are also together in real life. Example: when arwen rides away from the nazgul, the horse scene (shot with a double by the way) is in one area, the river she enters in another area, and the when she turns to face the nazgul, that river is yet somewhere else. I highly recommend the area around queenstown and glenorche.Lord of the Rings Overview

JOURNEYS OF FRODO - AN ATLAS OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN'S 'THE LORD OF THE RINGS' ReviewDrawing upon Professor Tolkien's own well defined descriptions and maps Barbara Strachey has created a fine
volume of cartographic drawings of the routes taken by Frodo Baggins and the other members of the fellowship.
The maps are highly consistent and creative regarding Middle-earth topography and environmental realties.
Moon phases, rest stops, camping sites and important occurrences within the journey are all marked and noted
for a complete picture of the path's taken to destroy the ring of power and the struggle to save
Middle-earth.
This work contains fifty-one maps with detailed but brief(a usual page long) descriptions of the
country traversed , corresponding dates and text from novel for background and
footnoted for reference. This an impressive book allowing the reader to fully
inhabit and trace the epic journey of the company of nine in a relatively compact
collection to compliment Tolkien's own volumes. Though the author concentrates her
work depicted in THE LORD OF THE RINGS she has consulted and referenced for clarity
sake THE HOBBIT,UNFINISHED TALES and other Middle -Earth related material to
ensure a fuller account of said maps and drawings. Undoubtedly comparison's can
be made with another volume of cartographic pieces depicting J.R.R Tolkien's
creation; The Atlas of Middle- earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad, however this much larger
book covers a broader spectrum within Tolkien's sub -created world through
the ages and changes in the spheres. Ms Fonstad is a professional cartographer and her volume
shows it , Ms.Strachey is not a professional in the that field but her work while not as refined
a other is in my opinion can stand alongside the larger especially in regards to what it
provides in detail and execution. THE JOURNEYS OF FRODO is an engaging and vivid book.JOURNEYS OF FRODO - AN ATLAS OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN'S 'THE LORD OF THE RINGS' Overview

The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings (4 Volume Box Set) ReviewThis review is for regular size paperback only, as far as the books themselves, of course they're classics. Unfortunately Amazon links their reviews to multiple versions of the same product (meaning you can write a review for an audio book and that same review show up on a paperback edition of the same title. It's really bad for music reviews, let me tell you!).
If you should by this edition of HOBBIT/LOTR really depends on what you what for your money. I first purchased trade paperback editions of THE LORD OF THE RINGS back in the early to mid nineties. They're nice and more portable than, perhaps, other editions of the book if you looking for some quick reading on the beach/airport/wherever and they're economical.
However, these editions tend of have more misprints, are not as sturdy as other editions of Tolkien's classic texts, and the maps are just hell to look at. As any regular size paperback they are not as hardy as other, better found bound books.
The oversize paperback editions are better, but overall the books do not hold up as well or are durable as hard back editions. If you do want to read the stories though without having to worry about the shape the books are in then the regular paperbacks would be the way to go, as (for me anyway) I want to keep the nicer editions in relatively clean condition.
Given Tolkien's status of one of the world's most popular writers, I would recommend picking up nicer editions of these works anyway, as you can get them at reasonable prices and they are much better purchases than the paperback box sets. The only real drawback is there is no general uniformity between the editions of THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS that I recommend, if that is important to you.
Douglas A. Anderson's THE ANNOTATED HOBBIT, is the definitive text of THE HOBBIT, has numerous textual annotations and examines in complete detail all the different revisions Tolkien made to the work in the subsequent decades after its initial publication in 1937.
For THE LORD OF THE RINGS, the most accurate text is the 50th Anniversay edition prepared by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull. I have the one volume oversize paperback edition of LOTR and am quite pleased with it.
The only way I would recommend purchasing the boxset of these books is if they published The Annotated Hobbit and the 50th Annivesary LOTR text as a uniform set as those are the definitive versions, and personally I'd prefer to see all four volumes hardbound. I don't think I've seen a hardbound version box set of all four works, though there are plenty to be had of LOTR.
In summary, unless you are wanting cheap editions of these books, you will be better served by purchasing other editions of Tolkien's books

As that was only in regards to these actual editions of Tolkien's work and not reviews of the books themselves, I am also including my separate reviews I have written for Amazon of THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Also included is an abandoned review I wrote for THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING all the way back in early 2000 but was never posted on Amazon, explaining how Tolkien's life work of THE LORD OF THE RINGS is NOT a trilogy but rather three parts of one work divided up for publishing purposes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE HOBBIT Review - Inferior to THE LORD OF THE RINGS? I think not! No, just different!, April 7, 2000
The biggest problem with this novel is perception. Tolkien wrote this story for children; to be more specific, this was written for HIS children. There were several stories like this, but it was this, The Hobbit, that was his master achievement in children's literature.
The Lord of the Rings ( a single epic, NOT a trilogy) was written to cash in on The Hobbit's success. Tolkien wanted to get on with the more serious work of his mythology, and ultimately that is what happened with The Lord of the Rings. It became attached to his mythology, and became as important to him as The Silmarillion.
So delineation is required if you want to read this. Do not go in with the thought that The Hobbit is a "precursor" or any such nonsense to The Lord of the Rings. Think of it like you would think of any other children's classics: children's classics. If you take it on The L. R.'s terms, this is a failure, primary because it is not written to be like that. But, on the flipside, The L. R. is as much a failure in children's fiction. It is not children's fiction, it is epic fantasy, and one should not equate it with children's fiction. That is EXACTLY what people try to do with The Hobbit. They try to put it in the same type of genre or playing field as The L. R. They are both masterpieces, and I love them both dearly. But one is for children, the other with adults.
Of course, Tolkien is part of the problem. How many books do you know that is a children's book and has an adult sequel? Not very many. The Hobbit, scarcely 300 pages, was written and published in the children's market. He then talked to his publishers, and they wanted a sequel. So he began "the new Hobbit", as C. S. (Jack) Lewis so aptly put it. He was preoccupied with his mythology, and the sequel was drawn into it. So we have two works, spanning two different genres, and as far as surface connections go its little more than prequel/sequel. Instead of looking at The Hobbit as a prequel, a precursor to his ADULT masterpiece, an inferiour version, think of as his CHILDREN'S masterpiece. The Hobbit is top of the class in children's fiction, one of the few contenders against such other great children's works as Narnia and Wrinkle in Time. The Lord of the Rings, likewise, is THE crowning masterpiece of the fantasy genre, of which its influence is incalculable to that fantasy market. Both are as important as the other, just in different fields.
I haven't talked about The Silmarillion much. I have already reviewed it, so I won't go real in-depth here. But the same thing happened with it. People, expecting another Lord of the Rings, were inevitably disappointed with the Biblical style of the published version. If Tolkien wrote that book out in narrative form as he did Lord of the Rings, it would be ten times longer than Lord of the Rings. The biggest problem with Tolkien is people have to many preconceptions that are incorrect.
So, basically, in conclusion, think of it like this:
1. The Hobbit - Children's masterpiece. He scores big with this one.
2. The Lord of the Rings - a single fantasy, not a trilogy. (Tolkien was always quick to point that out). The Crowning achievement of modern fantasy.
3. The Silmarillion - the Bible of Middle-earth. Much more for students of his work than the causal reader.

The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien
***** Despite vehement critical hostility, Tolkien is among our most important writers because the way he handles Myth, 26 Sep 2007
Over the past several decades, THE LORD OF THE RINGS has sold millions of copies and is commonly regarded as one of the most influential fantasy novels ever published. Many first time readers have began their trek into Middle-earth with Frodo and the Company of the Ring in recent years. What they will encounter there has been loved by millions of readers before them, and if they allow themselves to respond to Tolkien and his Myth will doubtless become a loyal and ardent fan of Tolkien and those furry-footed hobbits. What's also notable about THE LORD OF THE RINGS is, for a book as long as it is, many of its readers reread the novel many times over. Yet despite its enduring popularity, Tolkien is often held in complete disregard by the literary establishment.
The real question is why? In the literary climate that is characterized by modernism and post-modernism where the twentieth and twenty first century is a wasteland why does a "series" of fantasy novels become one of the most beloved works in modern times?
It's because the power of myth over the human imagination works wonders, creating a longing and a hunger that, Tolkien argues, is met by the Christian religion. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis are the flip-sides of the same coin, with Lewis giving us accounts of the longing and Tolkien providing the books that would create that longing. And what about the longing? It's that longing for Myth, that love for those beauties which Tolkien shows us in THE LORD OF THE RINGS. It's that longing that sets man apart from all other creatures in the universe: a craving for beauty and for joy. The German word for this longing is "senhsucht". In a time characterized by fast-food, cell-phones, materialism, superficiality, the account of a Hobbit working against all odds in a mythic landscape so captures the human imagination (and this is NOT hype) that an entire genre is created. It is because of how Tolkien so masterfully handles Myth that he has been so highly treasured by such a large fan base.
Still, there are a few things to consider when reading Tolkien nowadays. Looking over the reviews, it proved rather shocking to me that people have been complaining that, although it was original when it was published, much of what Tolkien has done has become cliche and that other writers are much better working with these cliches and making them more exciting than Tolkien. They complain about his "endless descriptions" of the natural world, very detailed accounts of geography and not enough "characterization." The characters are unrealistic: the "human drama" required by the book's very nature is beyond Tolkien's scope as a writer. THE FELLOWSHIP...Read more›The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings (4 Volume Box Set) Overview

The Lord of the Rings - Part I - The Fellowship of the Ring ReviewMost people coming to this review already have a good idea what the story is all about from either other readers or people who have seen the movies made from this three part story. This is not a trilogy the three-part story so you can buy the individual books but it might be prudent to buy all three at the same time or a combined volume.
The reason I say buy the complete "Lord of the Rings" now is that you will just be picking up speed and getting everything straight in your mind and you will come to the end of this volume. Talk about a cliffhanger. This animal leaves you with several.
Even though the adventure takes place six years after the adventures in Tolkien's "the Hobbit or There and Back Again", the writing style is also a little more in-depth.
I am not going to paraphrase the story. J.R.R. Tolkien himself tells you what you need to know in the prolog.
Many people have read things into this story thinking it was maybe an allegory of things like the bomb; but Tolkien says himself that this is not an allegory.
Tolkien creates a rich world in which you the reader will feel you are part of the adventure. If you've only seen the movies than you've only seen a synopsis and you will not be disappointed in this book. The Lord of the Rings - Part I - The Fellowship of the Ring Overview

The Film Book of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings ReviewWith boys ages 7 & 5, I've been looking for a "storybook" version of The Lord of the Rings. This is the ONLY product out there, short of the Hear the Tape, See the Pictures, Read the Book Buena Vista version of the Rankin-Bass cartoons. I've purchased copies for my sons and nephew for Christmas, and I really like the effort (as much as I liked the cartoon movie). My only complaint is the same one I have for the film. It needs a second half. Note: even more than the movie, this book is geared for kids. The Film Book of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings Overview

The Lord of the Rings ReviewWhile the price of this book is steep, this is easily the best version of this book in print. The gilded pages and high-quality leather look, smell and feel wonderful. This is not the questionable quality leather used on previous versions, this is the real deal. More importantly, this version has, as J.R.R. recorded in letters, reproductions of the Book of Marzubul. These are the pages from the Dwarven book found in the Mines of Moria by Gandalf and the Fellowship. In the begining and ending of the book are also included maps that fold out to render Middle-earth for the reader, again as the author originally wanted.
This is the book that Tolkien dreamed of having published but couldn't due to the realities of post-WWII publishing costs and questions about a 400,000 word publication.
For me, there is an emtoional response to this book for two reasons. One, it is as fine or better than the book the author originally wished to have published and two, it is a beautiful piece of art all on its own, suitable for display. If you love books or love Tolkien or both, this is a must have and the centerpiece of any worthy collection.
(Some are commenting that the book isn't actually leather. Be sure to check your version as there are others available, but the information provided to me stated my copy was leather and if it is fake, it fooled me.)The Lord of the Rings Overview

The Curse of the Ring (Oxford Myths and Legends) ReviewI can't believe this book's out of print! It's still in libraries, though, I think. This is THE book to read if you love Viking myth (like me!). The rich flavour of the story is here, and good tale-spinning, and amazing artwork. The book should actually be for older readers, because I don't think children would grasp the concept in this old saga of love and blood and tragedy. A tale born of rage and wound with coiled bands of mysticism. This is the only retelling I've encountered which measures up to the grandness of the story. Beautiful wording and beautiful pictures. The Curse of the Ring (Oxford Myths and Legends) Overview

Tolkien: A Look Behind the Lord of the Rings ReviewContrary to the opinion of the reviewer below, who indicates an inability to remember what was read (which says quite a bit all by itself, doesn't it?), this book does its job admirably well. A popularized account of the literature behind the literature which Tolkien left for us, this book takes us through the wide range of mythic and legendary material from various historical periods in Europe & nearby regions which lie at the source of J.R.R. Tolkien's greatest fantasy works (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) and which influenced the great fantasist, himself. Not a book for scholars but apparently too erudite for some readers of Tolkien's works, this book takes us on a quickie survey of the legends and linguistic antecedents which influenced and captured Tolkien's fancy. At the same time it gives us a fairly educated survey of the history of fantasy literature itself. The book is meant to be entertaining for those who love to understand what they are reading -- though it's no fantasy itself, which is perhaps what our disappointed reviewer expected. Or perhaps this person was seeking the inside dope on Tolkien and his times. Whatever. At the least, this is a good source for those who want to understand the history of this type of literature and who want to go farther than just reading the material. It was for me. And it took me farther than I'd expected. Afterwards, you can go on to many of the sources themselves. This book tells you what they were and, often enough, where to find them. --- Stuart W. The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King ReviewWhat is more important in a book than the characters or the storyline of action and adventure? In Lord of the Rings the Return of the King, Tolkien creates an immense variety of important and interesting characters. These characters form a fascinating story that wouldn't be the same without them. Some of my favorite characters are Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. These characters are the heroes, but what would the story be without villains for the heroes to battle? Among the ranks of these villains are the Dark Lord Sauron, his puppets Saruman the wise, the Nazgul, as well as the many Orcs and Uruk- Hai that are their slaves. These characters are of many races. For example Legolas is an elf and Gimli is a Dwarf.
Tolkien creates a mystical story that demands to be read over and over again. This book, which is the third book in the Lord of The Rings trilogy, is quite possibly one of the best books I have ever read. When J.R.R. Tolkien wrote this book in nineteen fifty- six, the thirst of readers for fantasy was extraordinarily great. This trilogy provided a quench of this extraordinary thirst for fantasy. This masterfully written book which is in my opinion the centerpiece of J.R.R. Tolkien's career, is probably his all-time best. The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King Overview

The Fellowship of the Ring (Lord of the Rings (Pb)) ReviewI am not one who usually buys books-on-tape (or CD as in this case) but I have long wanted to obtain the Lord of the Rings so as to hear this incredible story over and over. After having read it several times, my book is in tatters and so I searched for an unabridged audio recording. Many of those that I have seen claim to be "unabridged" but the fact is that they are not complete! They give parts of the books in full but leave out many sections or chapters. This set by Rob Inglis is COMPLETE!!! It is very well read with no drastic voicing of characters. Characters are easily distinguished and thoroughly enjoyable. This set is not full of sound effects and music, so if you are looking for that this is not for you. However, I personally prefer the fact that this is not an over-production and is rather quite focussed on what I wanted in the first place, the characters and the story. Inglis does a marvelous job and I am very happy with this set. Again, not to harp on it but, this is a "complete" package well worth the money!!!The Fellowship of the Ring (Lord of the Rings (Pb)) Overview

The Lord of the Rings Poster Collection 2 (No. 2) ReviewThis collection features six works of Alan Lee who, along with John Howe, was one of the principle conceptual artists for Peter Jackson's films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings".
The six works featured in this collection are:
1. The Mines of Moria
2. Tol Brandir
3. The Golden Hall
4. Orthanc
5. The Siege of Gondor
6. Two Orcs in the Land of Shadow
The six works are large, stand alone posters on heavy stock contained within an attractive folder featuring "Orthanc" on the front cover. The prints--the originals were done in watercolor--have a black border with the name of the work and the artist at the bottom in small print.
These prints are an excellent addition to any Tolkien fan's collection. The Lord of the Rings Poster Collection 2 (No. 2) Overview

Literature Guide: Lord of the Rings (Scholastic Literature Guide) ReviewI am happy to see that teachers are finally adding the Tolkien books to the curriculum. J.R.R. Tolkien is arguably the best author of the 20th century, and his novels are rich in underlying themes that can potentially open children's mind to further learning. I have to disagree with another reviewer that said that adding Tolkien to the curriculum would make the novels tedious. Some of the most influential books in my life were read in school. By reading Tolkien in the classroom the teacher has an opportunity to guide children through this wonderful books, which can be a little overwhelming for some children. There is more to Tolkien's work than the plot of his novels. The author himself said there were important underlying themes in his work, and they are worth exploring. From my own experience I can say that although I read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings when I was 9 years old, I did not pick up on most of the underlying themes until I re-read years later. I wish there would have been someone to help me with my questions during that first reading too.
Finally, introducing great literature in the classroom makes sense. Too many children grow up without being exposed to good literature. In fact, the only thing many of them read is what they read for school. Tolkien's work, if taught correctly, can go a long way in helping children develop a lifetime love of reading that is so rare these days. Teacher's should take advantage of all the excitement brought about by the recent film versions of the books to get children interested in the story. Tolkien should not be treated as a regular text book, but as an exciting addition to the curriculum. This Literature Guide can help teachers break down all the complex information found in Tolkien's books into manageable concepts for schoolagers. I do suggest that the teachers educate themselves on the subject first by reading some of the books written by scholars on the subject so they can accurately explain concepts to students. Tolkien's work is complex. Children (especially the older ones) are bound to ask questions that about the book that are not answered in the Guide, and teachers should be prepared for them. After all, you can't teach something you don't know much about!Literature Guide: Lord of the Rings (Scholastic Literature Guide) Overview

The Fellowship of the Ring Insiders' Guide (The Lord of the Rings Movie Tie-In) ReviewThis book is apparently intended to be the equivalent for young readers of the "Lord of the Rings Official Movie Guide," which is also written by Brian Sibley (who was also the co-writer of the script for the BBC's excellent radio adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings," starring Ian Holm as Frodo). In many ways this children's version, although shorter and less detailed, is more interesting than the adult version. The "Insiders' Guide" contains some information not included in the "Movie Guide," such as the "Loom!" story mentioned by another reviewer below. Indeed, in general the emphasis of the "Insiders' Guide" seems to be a bit less on the production design of the movie, and more on the process of filming it and the experience of being on the set, than that of the "Movie Guide."
One interesting feature of Sibley's text as compared to that of the "Movie Guide" is that the chapters of the "Insiders' Guide" tend to begin with especially intriguing sentences intended to grab the reader's attention. Perhaps Sibley thinks this is more necessary when writing for children than for adults; I consider it a good technique when writing for any audience. ("Apollo 13," formerly called "Lost Moon," by James Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger, is an excellent example of the use of this technique in a non-fiction book for adults.)
Tolkien fans, and those moviegoers who have fallen in love with Peter Jackson's film, may well want to collect all four movie tie-in books: this "Insiders' Guide" and the "Photo Guide" (both intended for children) along with the "Movie Guide" and the "Visual Companion" (both intended for adults). Young readers seeking paperback books about the movie will find both the "Insiders' Guide" and the "Photo Guide" fairly good choices; the "Insiders' Guide" provides information about the movie's production and the background behind it, while the "Photo Guide" is the better bet for images from the film. The Fellowship of the Ring Insiders' Guide (The Lord of the Rings Movie Tie-In) Overview

Lord of the Rings Official Stage Companion ReviewI read this book before I saw the production (it arrived the morning before we left to see it), it covered every detail of the cast and crews journey which should prove to others that this interpretation was not just a money making venture but a sincere attempt to bring Tolkens world to the theatre. They succeeded since this production did push the ideas of storytelling to a place which was fantastically captivating. From each page thoughtfully chosen photos bring to life the memory of the Toronto and London productions. The costumes are fabulous to look on in more detail and the evolution of the ingenious stage design is just as interesting to read about as it was to see. The book largely focuses on the London cast and the brave steps they each took in bringing their characters to life ... if you were an Elf; you needed a head for heights and if you were a Hobbit a competent level of physical dexterity was needed, especially if you had to clime over members of the audience or if you happened to be a leaping Orc ... all of this is covered in the book, all the ideas reveal a level of originality which hasn't been seen in the West End for some time and perhaps not achieved as well. For all of the shows apparent growing success, it's early closure seems surprisingly unfair, for it is to be replaced by Andrew Lloyd Webbers new Oliver production-(Mr Webber wanted that theatre badly it seems); for myself the West End continues to be a place battling with artistic freedoms and business sense usurping them all too often but every once in awhile something unexpected arrives which takes your breath away and this book goes someway in preserving that first experience we had. A great book ... maybe Wallace productions will issue a dvd which utilises many of the videos which appeared on the web site ... I am sure there must be more production footage which still remains unseen?!
"Lothlorien is no more but her beauty is here reborn, you have used my gift well Samwise Gamgee...Frodo Baggins, jewel among Hobbits, if your hurts grieve you still and the memory or your burden is heavy come with us ... all your wounds and weariness will be healed ..."Lord of the Rings Official Stage Companion Overview

Untangling Tolkien: A Chronology and Commentary for The Lord of the Rings ReviewAn amazing accomplishment by a dedicated Tolkien fan.
That is how I'd sum up the book Untanging Tolkien. Michael Perry has first unraveled all Tolkien's "dates" -- which can be extrapolated from phases of the moon -- and then knit them together again in a cohesive outline, presented in much greater detail than Tolkien's own timeline (found buried in Appendix A of LOTR). By incorporating information from other Tolkien writings, the author of Untangling Tolkien collates additional facts about all the characters and the circumstances surrounding the War of the Ring, folding them all into this detailed chronology. He includes material that sheds light on possible parallels between Tolkien's work and events that were contemporary, and he provides original commentary that suggests some additional motivations for Tolkien's characters. Sidebars offer references to every source for the information presented and for each conclusion the author has drawn.
I found the format, with quick-reference bulleted lists and clearly delineated sections and subheadings, well-organized and easy to use.
NOTE: I read the third printing that was published in May 2004. Apparently the author has corrected many of the errors that David Bratman objected to (below). You won't find a better overview or a more throrough treatment of time and dates in LOTR than Perry provides in this book.Untangling Tolkien: A Chronology and Commentary for The Lord of the Rings Overview
