Emerald Empire 4th Edition (Legend of the Five Rings) ReviewEmerald Empire is a great addition to anyone playing/GMing a L5R game. It includes a lot of information players and GMs can use to play more "authentically". It includes a good number of character options for players. It's a bit expensive, but it's a great quality product with (as usual for 4ED) outstanding artwork.
I would also like to add that AEG customer support is very helpful. My copy had weak binding and was starting to come apart, so I emailed AEG and they sent me a new copy of the book for free. Super classy.Emerald Empire 4th Edition (Legend of the Five Rings) Overview

The Great Clans - Legend of the Five Rings RPG 4th Edition ReviewThis book fills in a ton of gaps in the history that I had questions on, and I would basically consider this book to be an extension of the core book. It is mainly background information and setting details, with some character options built in for each clan. Some die-hard old-school L5R players think that it's a little bit short, considering how thick the L5R background is, but as a relatively new player, this is a vast amount of information to fill a campaign with.
As I said, I would consider this an extension of the core boo, and completely essential. The Great Clans - Legend of the Five Rings RPG 4th Edition Overview

Legend of the Five Rings 4th Edition RPG ReviewBuyers who are familiar with the Revised 3rd Edition may be reluctant to buy the 4th Edition. That's understandable. I was wary myself, but I am grateful I took the plunge and purchased 4th Edition. This makes up for many of the mistakes of the past while forging a new future.
First, the book looks very nice. The artwork is exceptional, and the layout is professionally done. The type is on the small side, but the contrast is good. The fact that the type is so small in a book so large gives you an idea of just how full of information this book is. I'm not a fan of the section headings (Book of Water, et al.), but it's a stylistic decision that simply isn't my cup of tea. Others may disagree. Certainly, it's nothing I'd dock point off of. There have been a few typos, but they are mild; nothing like previous editions!
The book is very robust. The world of L5R has several years of stories crammed into it, and it's simply impossible to fit everything into one book. Still, this book has the most vital parts, while leaving some areas open for GM interpretation or sourcebooks. You have what you need to start a campaign, though the book intentionally makes some things vague so that it'll fit in almost any L5R campaign.
The rules are also well done. I understand this book has undergone some rigorous playtesting, and the hard work is apparent. A lot of the power differences between comparable Schools have been toned down so that while one school clearly has an advantage, it's usually not a runaway. The rules have been retooled so that success is based more on the dice than on what Advantages and Schools you have. Static bonuses are an endangered species; if a character receives a set numerical bonus or a "Raise," then it is indicative of how that character is supposed to be really good at what he does. L5R veterans may recall saying things like "7k3 +30." You're less likely to hear it in 4th Edition.
Veterans of L5R will also notice other changes, mostly for the better. The five stances make combat more dynamic and tactical--without resorting to battle mats with 5-foot squares. The Wounds distribution makes it likely that a character can withstand a solid hit and grit through the pain, rather than spiral down into ineffectiveness; I believe the idea I heard is that, "Combat should not be determined by who rolled the best initiative," and I think the book succeeds here. Also, the list of Advantages and Disadvantages has been expanded, including being blessed (or cursed) by a major Fortune, being positively or negatively influenced by one of the spirit realms, and even epitomizing or rejecting an aspect of bushido (or even its opposite, shourido).
There are still some things I do not like. While I praise the designers for balancing the rules, I am bemused by the Dragon tattoo, which seems to be considerably ahead in the power curve. I also did not like the maximum number of Raises being limited to your Void (I thought 3rd Edition was a step forward by eliminating that). These are very minor disagreements, which can be easily changed in a home game if you feel like it. They may make me roll my eyes, but I wouldn't reduce my score because of them.
Another down side is the price. Once you see and feel the book, you can see where the money has gone. This is obviously not a basement print job. Some may argue that no book should cost this much, but most RPG books nowadays are on the pricy side. At least you get excellent artwork, well-thought-out rules, and a fairly low typo-to-page-count ratio (page count is 400 FYI). Considering the hours of entertainment you can derive from this book, the price is actually rather reasonable.
Finally, this book has made me do something for the first time: Run my own L5R home game. That is high praise indeed if the shelves full of dusty game books are any indication. I've purchase and read many game books, but I never take the serious step in running a game based on them. L5R 4th Edition has gotten me excited enough to hunt down players and begin a new campaign.Legend of the Five Rings 4th Edition RPG Overview

Wind of Truth (Legend of the Five Rings: The Four Winds Saga, Fourth Scroll) ReviewThe book was a little bit disappointing. The author contradicts itself, especially in the last two chapter of the book... Maybe the reason for this was that the ending couldn't be written until the end of the last L5R's convention, where the new emperor was proclaimed.Wind of Truth (Legend of the Five Rings: The Four Winds Saga, Fourth Scroll) Overview

Wind of Honor (Legend of the Five Rings: The Four Winds Saga, First Scroll) ReviewAlthough the new characters introduced in this new saga continues the series' trend to be interesting and multidimensional, I find myself keep looking for references or a snippet about the characters from the previous saga (The Clan War saga).
I guess I like a complete ending similar to Tolkien's complete family tree style ending to the Lord of the Rings.
But I also understand the need to detach the characters to benefit those who hasn't read the previous saga (what are you guys waiting for? :)
One of the most interesting aspect of the series is the style of telling several stories that focuss on a single event but told from different perspectives. That's one of the thing that kept me reading. I'm glad to report that in this new saga, the style continues with numerous perspectives that starts to emerge with this first book (starts from the preamble by Mr. Bolme).
Ms. Soesbee is one of my favorite writers in the Five Rings universe. Her subtle sense of defiance, flowing narration featuring a show of contrast perspectives continues to delight readers.
I just hate to wait until next year for the next book... Wind of Honor (Legend of the Five Rings: The Four Winds Saga, First Scroll) Overview

The Steel Throne (Legend of the Five Rings: The Four Winds Saga, Prelude) ReviewThis is another book set in the world of Rokugan, from the Legend of the Five Rings game which has a Fantasy Japan/Asian setting. The previous books smacked of your usual game-based fiction weaknesses (usually just average writers working with someone else's world--which is ok for fan-fic, but not as satisfying usually, as good writers working in their own world). Ed Bolme is another gaming insider. This is good, since he actually knows the world of L5R. The best of the previous books was written by the one other author who also knew the material well. But I was impressed by Ed's writing. This is easily the best of the 8 books that have been published so far. The book starts when the Emperor Toturi is in the grips of possession by some dark power. The only way to save the Empire is by committing seppuku while he still has enough control. So Toturi finds himself in Jigoku, the world of the dead. The dark power threatens to shut the Gate between the living and the dead, so the living can no longer commune with dead ancestors (something very important to all of Rokugan)... The story is told with a lot of energy, strong characterization and a deft feel for the Asian/Samurai/Fantasy setting of the world. I enjoyed this. Although, I'm biased, since I've been following the story and the game for many years. The Steel Throne (Legend of the Five Rings: The Four Winds Saga, Prelude) Overview

Crab (Legend of the Five Rings 5) ReviewHida Kisada is a man who has spent fifty years fighting evil. Not some distant, vague concept of evil, but the actual thing: undead, demons, goblins, and the like. Every day, for fifty years, he has fought them or planned to fight them.
So why is it that he hooks up with them so willingly?
Granted, the initial offer takes two years for Kisada to mull over, but after that, it's easy - he sacrifices his clan's purpose, his desire for peace, and his son's soul all in one day.
Let me say that again: he effectively sells out everything he believes in, in a single day.
To be certain, this book isn't absolutely terrible. It's just that, as written, Kisada's not half the man Bayushi Shoju was (see the first novel in this series, there to find a similar character in a similar, but better-written, situation).
Worse, Kisada's not a tragic hero - he's a blundering idiot. He makes the kind of flagrant mistakes that should get people questioning his sanity and competence.
Finally, stay far, far away from this novel if you don't like the word "ropy" being used more often than the word "the."
What makes this novel worse than the Unicorn novel is that the Unicorn author at least had the excuse that the Unicorn never did anything. The Crab were arguably the biggest players in the Clan War, but you couldn't tell that from this.Crab (Legend of the Five Rings 5) Overview

Phoenix (Legend of the Five Rings 4) ReviewI gave the first 3 books 4 stars and gave this one 3 stars only because it doesn't wrap up a story like the other previous books. That would have been nice...
Having said that, I guess you'd have to say that "The Empire Strikes Back" was a terrible movie because it didn't have a satisfying 'good guys win' sort of ending. Or that the first two books of "The Lord of the Rings" were weak because they didn't wrap things up at the end of each.
Wrong.
This series is (I think) 7 books long. ...Like LOTR, you can't take one of these books and read it alone except for maybe "The Scorpion". Legend Of The Five Rings:Clan Wars" is a huge story that is slowly developed through each book. There are major plot elements from the previous 2 books that are described in this book and make it clear what the heck has been behind them. Specifically where the plague came from and who's sending out all these monsters and undead to wreak havok on the land. That alone is worth the price of the book.
This book takes place during the same period of time that books 2 and 3 take place. Although events from those books are only briefly touched upon just to give you some bearing as to when things are, I didn't mind. I read those events already and don't need to read about them again. "Unicorn" and "Crane" seem intertwined, but "Phoenix" is pretty much independent.
There is a lot of action in this book. Since the Phoenix use sorcery, there are a lot of battles that are not just desciption of what a guys sword was doing... although there is a lot of that too. This time there is a good deal of magic doing the fighting. Armies burst into flame, strong winds push bad guys around, rocks suddenly jut out of the ground to impale bad guys. Very cool stuff.
Some things someone posted that I thought were misleading:
1- "Then, magically, Tadaka is transformed into something EVIL. No mucking about here; Tadaka goes from an obsessed, but good, priest to a demon-worshipping man who murders his best friend."
This is not really true. Tadaka is changing, but he's not worshiping any demons. He's doing something else with demons, but not worshiping them. He also doesn't kill his best friend. It wasn't like this "friend" was someone he knew all his life... let alone was 'friendly' with. It is shocking when he kills him, but not completely out of character. I believe he did half-heartedly attack him earlier in the book (to make him go away... not something you would do to a 'best friend'). Tadaka is changing. He's been tainted by evil because he's accessed the Black Scrolls and is slowly being consumed by that evil. Using a Black Scroll is something that caused another character in the first chapter to turn evil. It's all spelled out... not coming from out of nowhere. Killing his friend is more like a device to show that he's not the same anymore. What's more, there's no telling if he really killed his 'friend' or not. Read the book and you'll probably see what I mean.
2- "He befriends natives of the Shadowlands, the hellish locale where Junzo lurks, but they somehow prove inept at surviving their own front lawn."
Not really. It wasn't their front lawn. They were actually taking Tadaka to a region that they are afraid of and don't go to. The trek took many days to get there, so it wasn't exactly their neighborhood. When some die, they are taken by surprise or natural selection takes over and they die because they were stupid. Only one in the group actually knows the terrain and that character DOES survive.

Although I liked this book a lot, there were two things that bothered me:
1- The word "cool" was used to describe something as being good. This was done by a character whose speech is a lot closer to an American than a denizen of ancient Japan, but it still seemed wrong. You could assume, however that there was a Japanese term like it that he used and that translates into English as "Cool". It still seemed wrong.
2- I think the author is running out of decriptions. He tends to use the same words to describe things over and over. I'm really tired of reading the word 'sinews'. There's always something going on with 'sinews'. Would it kill him to use the word 'tendon' once in a while? Also, there were two situations only a couple chapters apart (or so it seemed) where 2 different characters did the same thing. They stuck their swords through the eye and out the back of the skull of a zombie. I could be wrong about the sword going throught the back of the head in both cases, but jeezz. Another one through the Eye? Maybe there was a reason for this, but it seemed random enough to me that another body part could have been used. There are also a lot of other descritpions that you know you've just read a bunch of times already. There could have been different ways to describe the same thing if it had to be described again. When I read what appears to be the same sentence over again... sometimes just on the next page... it pops me out of the story and I'm reminded that there was an author to this book. It's not really happening, it was written.
Those are pretty small gripes. Other than that, it was a good read. I wouldn't recommend it unless you've read the previous books, though. But I wouldn't recommend "LOTR: Two Towers" without reading "LOTR: Fellowship of the Rings" first... This is a huge epic that requires you to read all the books to get the whole story...Phoenix (Legend of the Five Rings 4) Overview

L5R RPG Masters of War (Legend of the Five Rings (AEG)) ReviewA great read for anyone who is interested in the wonderfully rich world of Rokugan. Covering the three warlike clans, Masters of War presents details and history that have been missing from previous L5R products. I would almost state that this book is a must have for a serious L5R player/GM, as it presents a whole host of new schools and techniques of the three Clans that are discussed within its pages, including reprinting of some schools so as to be located in one easy to find place.
I eagerly await the remaining two parts of this mega-splatbook, detailing the 6 remaining clans and they're own particular areas of expertise.

L5R RPG Art Of The Duel (Legend of the Five Rings (AEG)) ReviewThis is a very good addition to the Legend of the 5 Rings RPG. It focuses on dueling, the normal way one defends his or her honor. It covers alternatives to the sword; magical duels, martial arts, courtier contests and even using games like Go or Shogi.
It looks at how each clan views duels and how they carry out dueling, including the Shadowlands. There are temples and dojos that teach dueling and new techniques to learn.
Now unlike previous L5R books that were presented in a dual D20/AEG format, this book is exclusive AEG 3rd edition. But since most of this book is color commentary, the little RPG aspects can easily be converted over to D20.L5R RPG Art Of The Duel (Legend of the Five Rings (AEG)) Overview

Wind of Justice (Legend of the Five Rings: Four Winds Saga, Book 3) ReviewAlthough it's not the easiest transition from short fiction on a website to a full-length novel, Rich Wulf pulled it off in a grand fashion: for what it's worth, in my humble opinion a fantasy book should have depth in the development of the characters, and should use the current events to further the universe's plot ... as well as to reveal more about the universe's past. Wind of Justice delivers on all those points and keeps the reader's attention till the end. If you're a hardcore L5R fan, you'll get answers - and more questions, just the way it should be. Thought Naseru wasn't the easiest Wind to like, maybe this book will change your mind.Wind of Justice (Legend of the Five Rings: Four Winds Saga, Book 3) Overview

Wind of War (Legend of the Five Rings: The Four Winds Saga, Book 2) ReviewWind of War was a huge disappointment. The author seems to have a very weak grasp of Rokugani society and custom. In fact, take out all of the bowing and references to katana and yari and this story could have taken place anywhere. There is no sign of the complex system of etiquette that governs all social interactions in Rokugan. The Scorpion Clan provides the story's villains but the characters behave nothing like the Scorpions of previous novels. Their leader is a buffoon, easily intimidated, short of temper and extremely heavy-handed - the complete opposite of what one would expect from a Bayushi lord. It is absurd to think that a political mastermind like Hantei Naseru would have anything to do with such a man. The Scorpion clan mandate to protect the empire at all costs, even if it means the sacrifice of their honor is disregarded and these samurai are reduced to nothing more than a band of thugs and extortionists. The plot revolves around Akodo Kaneka but does nothing to advance the story of the conflict between the Four Winds. In fact, the late emperor's other children do not even appear in the novel and only Naseru is even mentioned by name. Kaneka spends the entire novel defending a village of poor farmers from their Scorpion oppressors. The book is full of combat scenes that go on for pages but do nothing to advance the plot (in one scene, seven pages are devoted to a fight between Kaneka and a gang of thugs). The author frequently repeats himself (Lord Zuto is constantly narrowing his eyes and Kaneka is always rolling his shoulders and stretching his neck). Perhaps the most upsetting thing about this book is that the author clearly did not do his homework. Besides failing to capture the feel of Rokugan's complex society, there are events in this book that contradict events that have already taken place in previous novels of the series. For example, in The Steel Throne the Water Dragon dumps Hatsuko at the feet of a cowering Akodo samurai and commands him to care for her. For some reason, the author feels compelled to retell this part of the story, but in his version, Hatsuko shows up at the Akodo stronghold with a hand-written note explaining her circumstances. Did the author not read the previous novels? And how did this get by the folks at Wizards of the Coast? Are they not concerned with the quality of these stories? The Four Winds are potentially interesting characters and their struggle for Toturi's throne could make for an excellent series of novels. This potential is wasted however, if each character is handled in a vacuum as in this novel. What a shame!Wind of War (Legend of the Five Rings: The Four Winds Saga, Book 2) Overview

The Unicorn (Legend of the Five Rings: Clan War, Second Scroll) ReviewAlthough there aren't as many plot lines as in "The Scorpion", This book is just as good if not better. Better because the story doesn't have to deal with as many subjects and can spend more time developing fewer characters. "The Scorpion" had a lot to set up. "The Unicorn" is mostly about two characters, a Unicorn "Battle Maiden" and a Unicorn ambassador.
A lot of characters from the previous novel are here. Most are very much different from what they started out as in "The Scorpion".
After reading this one, I'm totally hooked on the series. I'm into the way the characters are changing and developing... specifically the hero from "Scorpion". It was also fun to watch the 'Battle Maiden' and her horse earn respect.
This series is a HUGE soap opera... with a lot of beheadings during battle. That seems to be a common way to die when there are swords about.
It resembles "Lord of the Rings" to the extent that there is a dark ominous bad guy whose power is growing (like Sauron). He uses goblins and ogres and other monsters as his minions (Like Sauron did). He has his own dark land (like Mordor). There are even Shadow Warriors that are basically clothing and armor draped over nothing more than shadows (like Ringwraiths). There is also a capitol city under siege (in "The Scorpions") that reminds me of Gondor. At least there aren't any Hobbits.
One interesting note so far is that these first two books don't really seem to have a bad guy. Everybody (even the Scorpion clan) are working for the better of Rokugan. The only real bad guys are the monsters and the dark bad guy called Lo Feng or something like that.
On to "Scroll 3"!!The Unicorn (Legend of the Five Rings: Clan War, Second Scroll) Overview

L5R Creatures of Rokugan Third Edition (Legend of the Five Rings (AEG)) ReviewAs far as supplements go, Creatures of Rokugan is pretty useful. The first few chapters deal with rules for playing spirits of various realms (including animal spirits), naga, and nezumi. Animal spirits are fairly well-done and appealing; they aren't extremely powerful, but have a number of very useful abilities that make them excellent additions for any group. Naga and nezumi have been updated and seem somewhat expanded compared to their earlier incarnations in the game; nezumi especially are very detailed and have a lot of style behind them.
After this come the various creatures, and there is no lack here. Instead of a "Shadowlands On Parade", we get a bit more diversity. Keep in mind, of course, that oni, gaki, and other hostile beings are more plentiful, but a clever GM will find plenty of extra creatures that should help them come up with some good ideas.
Is the book perfect? Sadly, no. I regret to inform you all that AEG seems to stubbornly refuse to proofread their work, or even run their text through a spell-checker. There's a lot of somewhat poor flavor text, and misspellings are so common that they'd give a teacher fits. Normally, I'm not really concerned with such things if the rules are sound, but several of the people who work with AEG have been in the business too long to be making these kinds of mistakes, and one would have hoped they'd have at least bought a copy of MS Office or something that can help them avoid the more obvious mistakes with nothing more than a few mouse clicks.
If you can overlook the poor writing quality and consider that you are buying this book to flesh out the land of Rokugan with more than just humans, you are definitely getting your money's worth. Just don't bring a lot of expectations to the store (or website) you buy it from.L5R Creatures of Rokugan Third Edition (Legend of the Five Rings (AEG)) Overview

L5R Fealty and Freedom (Legend of the Five Rings (AEG)) ReviewThis book is great for info on Ronin and the Imperial families, as well as helping players play one of these characters and help with mindset, history, and understanding how they fit in the world of Rokugan. The Scorpion (Legend of the Five Rings: Clan War, First Scroll) ReviewThis is definetely one of the best books I've read in a long time. The author did a great job with character developement and plot. Although I dont play the card game this book caught my interest a long time ago(when i saw the advirtisements for it in other books) and am glad to say it was worth the wait. The story is great and also the backround for it is also great because its different involoving eastern mythology instead of western mythology. Eastern mythology is interesting and this book had a lot of it. The book was also a great start off for what i hope will be a great series. I would highly recommend this book for anyone is into the fantasy genre. I hope the other books in the series will be as great at this one.The Scorpion (Legend of the Five Rings: Clan War, First Scroll) Overview
