Enjoying Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung ReviewThis item consists of 4 audiotapes which take you, via brief comments and musical excerpts, through the story of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungen. The sound quality is very good. The music is from a live 1953 performance conducted by Krauss, which is one of my favorites editions of the Ring Cycle. The commentary by Speight Jenkins is thoughtful, relevant, and easy to understand. All in all this is an excellent overview of Wagner's classic for anyone new to the Ring. The Valkyrie: music-drama in 3 acts : first day of the trilogy The Nibelung's ring ReviewThis Opera Guide 21 (The Valkyrie) is among the finest editions in the excellent series published by English National Opera. While it is absolutely loaded with wonderful gems, my favorite feature (and the reason I HAD to own it) is the side by side presentation of the German text of Wagner's poem with the English translation by Andrew Porter.
Porter says, "This translation of "The Ring" was made for singing, acting, and hearing, not for reading." By using (almost always) the same number of syllables in each line of the text as in the German, it is possible to enjoy the German text and the music, while making quick glances at the side-by-side translation. The effect of this translation is powerful. It FITS the music, without being a literal translation, and without the flowery poetic translation in various degrees of free verse that seems typical of the genre. Having listened to about 30 operas in the last six months (most of them multiple times) I feel that this translation enhanced my enjoyment of this opera more than those I used with any of the other operas. The power of the rhythmic translation is amazing.
Additionally, there are five pages of leitmotifs presented in the book, which are cross-referenced at the spot where they occur in the text.
The several pictures of Brunhilde and her sister Valkyries from early productions (c. 1890-1914)are a hoot!

The perfect Wagnerite: a commentary on the Niblung's ring ReviewI have read almost all of Shaw's published works which have come within my reach. I see the deterioration in the quality of his work as the aging process set in, and of his defense of such people as Djerjinski and Stalin. When he is profound, he is very profound and when he is off the mark he is way out in zoonieland. This book, fortunately, shows more of his great skill at criticism and assimilation of background data than his equally great skill at polemics. Remember, the compositionof the _Ring_ was an event of the past for him, and he was able to use historical source material. But what caught my attention was that the London newspapers of his own day ran letters trying to reconcile the "Brunhilde problem" in _Gotterdamerung_. All of this was a burning issue to the London intelligentsia. But, to the point: BUY this book because it is HILARIOUS, in the best sense of that word. This is Shaw, maybe not at his level best, but close to it. Learn while you laugh! The ideas propounded in this book have been burned into my memory because I have read them over and over. For those eager to approach the Ring and learn about this masterpiece this is the RIGHT book. One of the keys to understanding the Ring is based on its system of leitmotifs - recurring moments used to represent carachters, objects, events or emotions. These dramatic agents are very well explained (there's a sequence of other 4 books of Mr Sabor where you'll find the libretto translations and references to the leitmotifs as they appear throughout the work). A biography of Wagner precedes a chapter regarding the sources of the Ring. These are fascinating topics about the composer and his masterpiece. There is also a great chapter telling about the Ring story and its carachters. The Bayreuth story and a full bibliography, videography and a list of all the leitmotifs complements this excellent book. Wagner's Ring: A Listener's Companion and Concordance ReviewThose considering buying this book should be aware of what it is: a concordance written by a non-specialist. Readers seeking interpretive essays or reviews may be disappointed.
That point made, this book is a wonderful tool to improve one's understanding of Wagner's Ring. The concondance lists the appearance of all the important themes, issues, emotions, and characters. This would be particularly useful for students or others anaylzing the work. The organization and presentation of this section is clear. The addition of plot summaries, reviews of productions, and various discussions create a well-rounded volume.
The fact that the book is written by a non-specialist is most refreshing: discussions of characters, plot developments, and so forth are wonderfully lucid. They are insightful, without being burdened by some of the heavy jargon found in some works. Every page reveals the author's love and respect for his subject. His reviews of stage productions and sound recordings are informative and fresh. Here again, common sense prevails over musicological jargon.

Wagner's Eternal Ring: The Complete Production at the Metropolitan Opera ReviewWagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen is seeing more and more full productions across the United States - a feat of courage and lack of fear of huge budgets. Some of these "Ring Cycles' are more than successful than others and all of them are under scrutiny by critics and Wagnerites alike. The Los Angeles Opera Ring set off a series of volleys that are still smoldering, while the San Francisco Opera Ring has yet to be presented in its entirety so time will tell. The Metropolitan Ring as designed by Otto Schenk, Gunther Schneider-Siemsen and Rolf Langenfass seems to be one of the most generally popular versions of late and if this enormous book by photographer Nancy Ellison is any indication of the majesty of the production, for those of us who have not seen it in person this book is impressive indeed.
Part of the success of the book is the huge size - some of the frames cross the midline taking up two full extra long pages to give an idea of the scope of the production's design. The color is extraordinarily fine and the quality of paper is the finest available: this is after all a Rizzoli book. Ellison is an astute photographer and manages to capture angles and details with a very 'musical eye'. The atmosphere conveyed by these images is one of very dark tones and rather than altering the illumination for the sake of ease of photography, Ellison allows the production's lighting design to speak.
The photographs and the artist say it all, but there are comments and essays by Eva Wagner-Pasquier, Otto Schenk and James Levine that allow the history of the Ring to enter the presentation. This is a very beautiful book on every account and certainly one that Wagnerites around the world will want to add to their libraries.
