Wagner's Eternal Ring: The Complete Production at the Metropolitan Opera ReviewWagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen is seeing more and more full productions across the United States - a feat of courage and lack of fear of huge budgets. Some of these "Ring Cycles' are more than successful than others and all of them are under scrutiny by critics and Wagnerites alike. The Los Angeles Opera Ring set off a series of volleys that are still smoldering, while the San Francisco Opera Ring has yet to be presented in its entirety so time will tell. The Metropolitan Ring as designed by Otto Schenk, Gunther Schneider-Siemsen and Rolf Langenfass seems to be one of the most generally popular versions of late and if this enormous book by photographer Nancy Ellison is any indication of the majesty of the production, for those of us who have not seen it in person this book is impressive indeed.
Part of the success of the book is the huge size - some of the frames cross the midline taking up two full extra long pages to give an idea of the scope of the production's design. The color is extraordinarily fine and the quality of paper is the finest available: this is after all a Rizzoli book. Ellison is an astute photographer and manages to capture angles and details with a very 'musical eye'. The atmosphere conveyed by these images is one of very dark tones and rather than altering the illumination for the sake of ease of photography, Ellison allows the production's lighting design to speak.
The photographs and the artist say it all, but there are comments and essays by Eva Wagner-Pasquier, Otto Schenk and James Levine that allow the history of the Ring to enter the presentation. This is a very beautiful book on every account and certainly one that Wagnerites around the world will want to add to their libraries.
