The Ring of the Nibelung Book 2: Siegfried & Gotterdammerung: The Twilight of the Gods ReviewThis is a beautifully illustrated and translated two-book comic adaption of Wagner's Ring cycle. P. Craig Russell's defends his belief that he could translate the opera music into images and create a powerful fantasy saga. The art is fantastic: Russell draws beautiful panels - the covers of these two books are a great example of the art inside. The translation into English is melodramatic (well, it's opera) and powerful. I can't praise these books enough. This is my favorite graphic story since I read, and re-read, Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, and these two volumes will be accompanying me on all my future moves. The Ring of the Nibelung Book 2: Siegfried & Gotterdammerung: The Twilight of the Gods Overview

The Redeemer Reborn: Parsifal as The Fifth Opera of Wagner's Ring ReviewThis is an utterly marvelous book that I would very much recommend to anyone interested in Wagner. The author discusses Wagner's Ring and Parsifal within the context of Hinduism, Buddhism, Greek tragedy, Christianity, and the Grail legends. The fact that the author is able to discuss Wagner's work within the context of all of these spiritual sources in many ways explains why Wagner's music is viewed in mystical and quasi-religious terms by so many of his devotees.
The author analyzes the impact of Buddhism and Hinduism in Schopenhauer's writings. Schopenhauer of course had a major impact on Wagner's thought and it is interesting to see the mingling of Eastern and Western culture in Wagner's output. The author's discussion of Greek tragedy and the Grail legends is also insightful and revealing. Fans of Joseph Campbell will enjoy this book with its cross-cultural references. Those interested in the ideas of Carl Jung, particularly his concept of the "collective unconscious", will also find this book appealing.
The belief that the opera Parsifal shares many of the same emotional currents as the Ring is an idea shared by at least one other author, Robert Donnington, in his also magnificent book, "Wagner's Ring and Its Symbols." It is fairly easy to see the parallels between Siegfried and Parsifal as both begin their emotional journeys as impetuous and immature youths. Both ultimately achieve a state of wisdom with that wisdom coming sooner and probably more completely to Parsifal. There are also parallels between Wotan and Amfortas as both are very troubled men attempting to seek some level of redemption and peace.
As stated above, I would also recommend Robert Donnington's "Wagner's Ring and Its Symbols." Both of these books provide tremendous insight into the phenomenal and incredible Der Ring des Nibelungen of Richard Wagner. The Redeemer Reborn: Parsifal as The Fifth Opera of Wagner's Ring Overview

Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung (Opera Classics Library Series) ReviewI was hesitant to include Wagner in my German lit course on the reception of the Nibelungen, but this book provided the answer. Its prose is so well written that it must truly be considered an artistic achievement in translating across mediums. Wagner is no easy read in its original form, and direct translations suffer, some graphic novels do an excellent job, but here the author combines the breadth of the Ring with an excellent efficient prose - truly magnificent!Wagner's The Ring of the Nibelung (Opera Classics Library Series) Overview

The perfect Wagnerite: a commentary on the Niblung's ring ReviewI have read almost all of Shaw's published works which have come within my reach. I see the deterioration in the quality of his work as the aging process set in, and of his defense of such people as Djerjinski and Stalin. When he is profound, he is very profound and when he is off the mark he is way out in zoonieland. This book, fortunately, shows more of his great skill at criticism and assimilation of background data than his equally great skill at polemics. Remember, the compositionof the _Ring_ was an event of the past for him, and he was able to use historical source material. But what caught my attention was that the London newspapers of his own day ran letters trying to reconcile the "Brunhilde problem" in _Gotterdamerung_. All of this was a burning issue to the London intelligentsia. But, to the point: BUY this book because it is HILARIOUS, in the best sense of that word. This is Shaw, maybe not at his level best, but close to it. Learn while you laugh! The ideas propounded in this book have been burned into my memory because I have read them over and over. Read this book if you can appreciate subtle jokes. The perfect Wagnerite: a commentary on the Niblung's ring Overview

The Ring Of The Nibelung: The Rhine-gold and The Valkyrie ReviewWhile telling entertaining stories of hideous dwarves, most beautiful maidens living in a river, magnificent gods, splendid heroes and war maidens, this Wagner opera-inspired book interestingly engages with several long debated philosophical issues.
The one that I enjoyed most was the problem of men's free will seen from the perspective of a God himself (a God very much similar to a Greek one).
If not else, the author achieved his purpose (declared in the preface) to raise the reader's interest about Wagner's works. Although sometimes hard to follow, the old style English lexical choices fit well in the atmospheres evoked by the story.
From beginning to end, it was an enjoyable read that I advice for all those who are even remotely interested in opera and/or philosophy or even a simple Lord of the Ring-style story. The Ring Of The Nibelung: The Rhine-gold and The Valkyrie Overview

Der Ring Des Nibelungen (Ring Cycle) ReviewWagner's Der Ring de Nibelungen is one of the most complex and significant artisitic creations in the world of opera. For those eager to approach the Ring and learn about this masterpiece this is the RIGHT book. One of the keys to understanding the Ring is based on its system of leitmotifs - recurring moments used to represent carachters, objects, events or emotions. These dramatic agents are very well explained (there's a sequence of other 4 books of Mr Sabor where you'll find the libretto translations and references to the leitmotifs as they appear throughout the work). A biography of Wagner precedes a chapter regarding the sources of the Ring. These are fascinating topics about the composer and his masterpiece. There is also a great chapter telling about the Ring story and its carachters. The Bayreuth story and a full bibliography, videography and a list of all the leitmotifs complements this excellent book. After reading this book the Ring will become an even more pleasing and understandable experience.Der Ring Des Nibelungen (Ring Cycle) Overview

Reflections on Wagner's Ring ReviewThere are few better suited to reflect on the Ring Cycle than John Culshaw. An instrumental figure in the titanic Solti Ring, Culshaw's Ring Resounding offered a clear, bright view on Wagner's phenomenon, a 16-hour opera cycle that has been regarded, with the Chartres Cathedral at Notre Dame, as one of Western art's pinnacles. Reflections does the same: it shows Culshaw's personal yet often virtually universal thinking.
This book was drawn from Culshaw's lectures, in the intermissions, which appeared on the Met Opera broadcast of the entire Ring Cycle some years back. Essentially this is a volume printed by popular demand. Reflections is a "middle ground" to read. The book's character analysis tends to be concise yet much more meaningful than the general pages and pages of review, and the same applies for the rest of the volume. The connections forged by this book between Wagner's Ring and general humanity are strong, and Reflections is certainly a good companion to the Ring for those who seek to find a greater awareness within Wagner's work. The photographs and illustrations are in the style of Wieland Wagner's famous Bayreuth productions. They seem, to me, a perfect choice for the book. John Culshaw's words are designed to get the reader thinking about Wagner's meaning: Wieland's sets and lightings are likewise very open to interpretation.Reflections on Wagner's Ring Overview

Wagner's Eternal Ring: The Complete Production at the Metropolitan Opera ReviewWagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen is seeing more and more full productions across the United States - a feat of courage and lack of fear of huge budgets. Some of these "Ring Cycles' are more than successful than others and all of them are under scrutiny by critics and Wagnerites alike. The Los Angeles Opera Ring set off a series of volleys that are still smoldering, while the San Francisco Opera Ring has yet to be presented in its entirety so time will tell. The Metropolitan Ring as designed by Otto Schenk, Gunther Schneider-Siemsen and Rolf Langenfass seems to be one of the most generally popular versions of late and if this enormous book by photographer Nancy Ellison is any indication of the majesty of the production, for those of us who have not seen it in person this book is impressive indeed.
Part of the success of the book is the huge size - some of the frames cross the midline taking up two full extra long pages to give an idea of the scope of the production's design. The color is extraordinarily fine and the quality of paper is the finest available: this is after all a Rizzoli book. Ellison is an astute photographer and manages to capture angles and details with a very 'musical eye'. The atmosphere conveyed by these images is one of very dark tones and rather than altering the illumination for the sake of ease of photography, Ellison allows the production's lighting design to speak.
The photographs and the artist say it all, but there are comments and essays by Eva Wagner-Pasquier, Otto Schenk and James Levine that allow the history of the Ring to enter the presentation. This is a very beautiful book on every account and certainly one that Wagnerites around the world will want to add to their libraries.

Finding an Ending: Reflections on Wagner's Ring ReviewWe are currently (2009)working our way through the Ring Cycle in Los Angeles and I find this an invaluable guide to the deeper philosophic meaning of these operas. It has a useful synopsis of the 4 operas at the end of the book including the hidden action between operas. It gives you a brilliant crash course on 19th century German philosophy with accurate discussions of Feuerbach, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche as viewed through the lens of Wagner. If you have no ax to grind about religion and faith you will enjoy the very detailed reading of the text and music in explicating Wotan's growth in understanding of his role as law-giver to the World, gradual acceptance of his ultimate failure and the failure of all "Gods" to impose any solution to the human dilemma. You'll appreciate the poignancy of his attempt to "find an ending," one that allows him to end his quest with dignity and meaning. The style is clear and elegant and I find the book deeply moving and profound. I also come to understand the young Nietzsche's adoration of Wagner whose Ring cycle is nothing short of a re-enactment of our attempt to find meaning out of life without the easy solace of religions and blind faith.
Parenthetically, it also reveals how shallow our LA Ring is and what a travesty Achim Freyer's staging has made of this magnificent work. But that is the subject of another discussion.Finding an Ending: Reflections on Wagner's Ring Overview

The Ring of the Nibelung ReviewAndrew Porter's English translation of the 'Ring' was written to be sung. It has been used in performances of the 'Ring' cycle at English National Opera and elsewhere. When reading this translation, and perhaps using it to follow a recording or broadcast of any of these operas in the original German, you should keep in mind that it is not a *literal* translation. Porter has taken some liberties with the meaning of the original text, in order to match the rhythms of his English as closely as possible to those of Wagner's archaic German. The translator has also attempted to capture some of the alliteration that is characteristic of Wagner's *stabreim*.
It is clear that Andrew Porter understands the text of the 'Ring' well enough that he was able to make this "poetic" translation without distorting the meaning of the original text. For a literal, accurate translation, the only one currently available is by Stewart Spencer (Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung: The full German text with a new translation and commentaries, Thames and Hudson, 1993). You might also be able to find in a library or for sale used, the William Mann translation (Centurion Press Ltd, 1964).The Ring of the Nibelung Overview
