Enjoying Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung ReviewThis item consists of 4 audiotapes which take you, via brief comments and musical excerpts, through the story of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelungen. The sound quality is very good. The music is from a live 1953 performance conducted by Krauss, which is one of my favorites editions of the Ring Cycle. The commentary by Speight Jenkins is thoughtful, relevant, and easy to understand. All in all this is an excellent overview of Wagner's classic for anyone new to the Ring. The Valkyrie: music-drama in 3 acts : first day of the trilogy The Nibelung's ring ReviewThis Opera Guide 21 (The Valkyrie) is among the finest editions in the excellent series published by English National Opera. While it is absolutely loaded with wonderful gems, my favorite feature (and the reason I HAD to own it) is the side by side presentation of the German text of Wagner's poem with the English translation by Andrew Porter.
Porter says, "This translation of "The Ring" was made for singing, acting, and hearing, not for reading." By using (almost always) the same number of syllables in each line of the text as in the German, it is possible to enjoy the German text and the music, while making quick glances at the side-by-side translation. The effect of this translation is powerful. It FITS the music, without being a literal translation, and without the flowery poetic translation in various degrees of free verse that seems typical of the genre. Having listened to about 30 operas in the last six months (most of them multiple times) I feel that this translation enhanced my enjoyment of this opera more than those I used with any of the other operas. The power of the rhythmic translation is amazing.
Additionally, there are five pages of leitmotifs presented in the book, which are cross-referenced at the spot where they occur in the text.
The several pictures of Brunhilde and her sister Valkyries from early productions (c. 1890-1914)are a hoot!

Wagner's Ring: A Listener's Companion and Concordance ReviewThose considering buying this book should be aware of what it is: a concordance written by a non-specialist. Readers seeking interpretive essays or reviews may be disappointed.
That point made, this book is a wonderful tool to improve one's understanding of Wagner's Ring. The concondance lists the appearance of all the important themes, issues, emotions, and characters. This would be particularly useful for students or others anaylzing the work. The organization and presentation of this section is clear. The addition of plot summaries, reviews of productions, and various discussions create a well-rounded volume.
The fact that the book is written by a non-specialist is most refreshing: discussions of characters, plot developments, and so forth are wonderfully lucid. They are insightful, without being burdened by some of the heavy jargon found in some works. Every page reveals the author's love and respect for his subject. His reviews of stage productions and sound recordings are informative and fresh. Here again, common sense prevails over musicological jargon.
In short, this book gives a wealth of practical knowledge about Wagner's vast opera cycle, and is a pleasure to read.Wagner's Ring: A Listener's Companion and Concordance Overview
