The New Munsell Student Color Set, 3rd Edition Reviewif you are a beginning artist, an aspiring designer or just someone fascinated with color, then this is a great publication to train yourself in the many nuances of color vision.
the format is a small black three-ring binder of 13 white card pages, and 13 small plastic baggies of dull finish color chips, somewhat smaller than postage stamps. each page presents an empty grid of color (light to dark down the page, and dull to brilliant across it) that you must fill in manually by placing each chip in its assigned position. there are no codes or color names printed on the back of the color chips to help you along, but there is an introductory page explaining the basic concepts of hue, chroma (saturation) and value, the three basic attributes of color.
accompanying the binder is a staple bound color primer by joy turner luke. although the production values are pretty modest, this is one of the best overviews of color i have read anywhere, particularly for artists and designers. luke gets into the history of color research, the basics of color vision, the details of color mixing (she has some sobering critical thoughts about the many commerical "artist's color wheels" on the market today), color design and more.
the color chips are fussy to work with; they are delivered unattached to the card pages so that you can sort and rearrange them in various color tests or color demonstrations, but it's easy to mix them up. i found it most convenient to glue them into place, so that they wouldn't get lost and were ready for quick reference. that tedious exercise apart, this is a very instructive introductory resource for young adults and color students of any age.The New Munsell Student Color Set, 3rd Edition Overview

500 Wedding Rings: Celebrating a Classic Symbol of Commitment (500 Series) ReviewAs usual with Lark books, gorgeous photos of incredible jewelry. My one complaint, and it is the same as all the other Lark jewelry books, is the inclusion of "non-wearable" and "exhibition" type pieces. Wedding rings made out of plastic or felt with weird tangly things off them is not worthy of inclusion in such a collection. I feel as if the pages taken up by the craft hour projects is such a waste. For the people out there who think completely unwearable and some, downright painful, jewelry is worthy of admiration, please Lark, save those pieces for their own volume. Metal Clay Rings: Silver Jewelry Inspired by Nature ReviewAfter owning and using several of Irina Meich's Metal Clay books, I was really looking forward to "Metal Clay rings." The book is beautifully organized and the well done photographs make following directions very easy. It was very disappointing, to find that she does not address how to make a practical durable ring. There was no information on what stones will fire well with metal clay. There is no information about what temperatures to fire different CZ to preserve the original color. The directions are simplistic and lacking specifics. A novice might enjoy this book. After working for several years in metal clay, I was very disappointed in the lack of depth in this book. Engagement & Wedding Rings 3ed PB ReviewAnd get a cup of coffee. And a high-lighter. And then just let this book do your work for you. Why? Because "Typical Joe" will wander into a nice jewelry store not knowing diddly about diamonds, sporting a deer-in-the-headlights look that serves as an aphrodisiac to the store clerks. The love Typical Joe! With their lush carpets, free coffee, revolving credit and halogen lights that would make a piece of tar light up like Vegas, the stores also provide an "education" about diamonds through brochures published by their trade association. But if you want the REAL skinny -- and not some puff piece that glosses over the important info -- get this book. It holds your hand, feeds your head and keeps your wallet MUCH fatter in the long run. ( I know am I going to get negative marks at the bottom of this review from annoyed jewelers...sorry, folks). I saved thousands of dollars.
For instance,I never knew about diamond brokers until I read this book. The appendix helped me find a good one;I saved a lot of money on the ring. I should mention that the purpose of the book is to educate on diamonds, not diminish the importance of a good jeweler (although, after I saw the mark-up on loose stones, I was livid. I'm all for making a profit, but most jewelers just GOUGE you). Point is, by reading this little book, you can learn a good deal of pertinent info and translate that into an immediate savings.
Buying an engagement ring, in theory at least, should be a one-time purchase. And no guy wants to mess it up. Get this book, understand the color, clarity, blah blah blah but focus on the CUT. If you understand that, you're miles ahead of Typical Joe. This book is well-organized, well-written and provides all the info you need to get a beautiful diamond from a position of strength.Engagement & Wedding Rings 3ed PB Overview

Beadmaille: Jewelry with Bead Weaving & Metal Rings (Lark Jewelry Books) ReviewThis book is fabulous! An innovative way to bring beads and maille together. The instructions are simple to follow, the pictures are in color and easy to follow, and the designs are gorgeous. I just received this book and cannot wait to start creating. The author recommends starting designs for those who are familiar with chain maille but not familiar with beading, and she recommends designs for those who know to weave seed beads but are not familiar with chain maille. I have done some chain maille but I am not familiar with seed bead weaving; however, her instructions are so clear that I am excited to start working with seed beads. Other elements are incorporated into the designs, such as bali style beads, hammered rings, etc. I would say this book is good for beginners through intermediate levels.
