Love Your Baby: Making Connections In the First Year ReviewAs a parenting author, psychotherapist & baby book author I has an interest in these products. I contacted the author and offered to provide an independent review. In agreeing to review these books I received a neat yet weighty parcel and inside I discovered some hidden gems. These books are unique, creative and educational. I have to say, I absolutely love them! I have so many good things to say about them I'm just not sure where to begin!
In the REAL brain development series there are six books for parents/professionals providing information about brain development through play, love and positive contact focusing on making connections in the first year and continuing on from age 1 to age 5. Each little packet has been prepared for easy access and each is jargon free.
I love the size of these mini books and the way they have been created; they are small and fastened together with a ring. It seems Deborah wanted to create these in a very easy and practical format so it is extremely easy for parents to use and take them anywhere. The ring, means you can easily flip to an activity that fits the current situation of the family (laundry, riding on the bus, cooking, waiting for an appointment, etc.) Each packet seems to be less like a book....and more like a simple to use and unique resource. Deborah has certainly achieved this with these little packets of joy.
These pre-eminent packets are a must read for all parents and professionals. The language is accessible and the pictures are delightful. My favorite consistent theme is hearing the voice of `our' children throughout. The child voice can be `heard' on the back of each page and it reminds you of what your children need to promote positive brain development. "My brain will adapt to whatever my world provides for me. For my brain to develop best, I need to have fun, interesting, loving experiences built into each day" McNelis (2008).
Each page provides you with information or an activity and then Deborah succinctly goes on to tell you all about what your children need for their brains to develop in the best possible way.
I think when Deborah produced these beautiful little books she had them in mind for providing ideas that some may not have been exposed to in their own growing up and to fit it in to busy working lives. But, she also kept in mind the busy professional parent who needs ideas just as much so they can spend quality interaction time with their children.
I think these packets should be given to each and every parent from their midwives, doctors or other healthcare professionals indeed any professionals working with parents or children to promote positive development. The `Love Your Baby' packets can be used to support their efforts in an easy way through sharing practical ways to promote and easily learn about ways that really support brain development. Many schools, early childhood centres, parenting programs, family resource centres, nursery or Surestart centres, should make these available and distribute them to parents.
These mini books support ALL adults to realise that these are the ways science show us that brains develop best.
My daughter-in-law said she feels that it would be great if health services distributed these packets to those planning a pregnancy and those who have discovered they are pregnant. And I concur! I would have loved to receive my very own "Love Your Baby" packet. Then pediatricians, health visitors or other health care professional could give out the next one each year following!!
If I were the CEO of a health authority or other such company I would jump on board and consider using these packets as promotional items to increase the Public Relations of the company! They could also be used as promotional items for agencies or businesses wanting to promote the healthy development of children. These companies could have their logo and contact information printed on the packets!
The cost is $9.99 /packet US or UK --- International orders can be purchased with PayPal and the shipping will be calculated. When purchasing sets there is a discount in the price ... $27.00 for a 3 packet set or $54.00 for the 6 packet set. I believe bulk orders for organisations, schools or business get discount pricing for quantities over 25.
For more information and to order these pivotal packets and more from the REAL brain development series contact Deborah McNelis at [...]Love Your Baby: Making Connections In the First Year Overview

Mom's Ultimate Family Organizer: A One-Stop Planner for Busy Moms ReviewI really was excited to get this planner and started filling it in right away (the size was GREAT for me b/c all the school papers, etc. fit right in without folding and stuffing). It's just the size of a regular binder. THEN I noticed the two-sided printing was just not done the best way! The backside should be reversed so that when you're flipping through the months you don't have to completely turn the notebook around. Same goes for flipping through the weeks. This would be so much more efficient, and the problem annoyed me so much that I'm having to make my own copies DONE THE RIGHT WAY. I guess you could always order refills, but I would honestly be using one side of the papers. I don't want to have to flip all of them over at the end of the year either -- just want them all in order, flipped appropriately so I can use both sides. Or hey, I don't mind using one side, but they need to give me 52 pages of "weeks" and 12 pages of "months." There are not enough pages as it exists now to use it "one-sided." Most organized types will agree, and if we send them a review, maybe they will fix this =) I'll get on that as soon as I can pencil it in, ha!Mom's Ultimate Family Organizer: A One-Stop Planner for Busy Moms Overview

The Ring Makes All the Difference: The Hidden Consequences of Cohabitation and the Strong Benefits of Marriage ReviewFocus on the Family's Glenn Stanton is a student of not only the social science surrounding and supporting traditional marriage, but also the culture, both religious and secular, in which it resides. With a strong command of these two spheres, this makes Stanton the ideal author to examine the chronic but worsening trend of cohabitation.
In the early 1970s, at the apex of the Cultural Revolution, American model Lauren Hutton, succinctly put to words the fears of her generation. In an interview with Time Magazine, Ms. Hutton was unapologetic when acknowledging that she lived with her boyfriend. When asked about the prospect of marriage, she said that it was "great for taxes, necessary for children, abominable for romance."
That such a lie took root amidst the tumultuous turn of culture's tide is not surprising. However, as Stanton convincingly points out with grace, just believing a lie doesn't make it true. Over three decades removed from Hutton's progressive perspective, there is conclusive evidence that the cohabitation experiment has failed, and miserably so.
"This is a rare instance where there's a chasm the size of the Grand Canyon between what many young adults believe and the proven reality of their experience," Glenn writes. "And it is not the moralizing preachers and traditionalists saying so."
Stanton wades through the scientific research indicating that cohabiting couples, if they ever marry, are 50% to 80% more likely to divorce than those who live apart prior to the big day. Cohabiting couples are also at much greater risk of suffering "serious relational impairments" - a gentle term for general discord and dysfunction.
Orthodox Christians will resonate with the early part of the book, which affirms the multi-millennial and Biblical case for marriage. Stanton saves the latter-half, though, for his most compelling and original material. Cohabitation, the author argues, clearly favors men over women. Ironically, liberation from marriage was considered a cornerstone of the feminist movement, and yet decades later, the research now concludes living together outside of marriage is nothing short of a relationship on the guy's terms, whereby a man enjoys easier access to sex, minus any formal commitment.
The tone of Stanton's analysis is redemptive, suggesting that despite disconcerting trends, the institution of marriage remains solid. Such optimism brings to mind the man who once suggested that the large number of divorces indicate that America is still the land of the free. Yes, replied his friend, and the marriage rate shows that it's also still home of the brave. The Ring Makes All the Difference: The Hidden Consequences of Cohabitation and the Strong Benefits of Marriage Overview
