On the Arm of a Player ReviewWhen my copy of ON THE ARM OF A PLAYER arrived, I dove right in. I had no idea what to expect, as this is the first novel by Reese Ring. And let's hope there are many more to follow.
The storyline is quite exciting. Getting to know the main characters, and how their lives changed and intertwined, kept me coming back for more. There were plenty of twists and turns in the plot, so that it was never dull. Nor was it too fast paced or frenzied. Just when I thought: okay, what else can happen...well, an event would occur to add a new dimension to the plot. The story really built up its momentum and held my interest until the very end.
Ms. Ring's characters were believable, well developed, and sympathetic. Each had both charms and flaws which made him/her more true to life. I really wanted to learn what happened to Montana Skye, how she ended up, and what road her life took.
The book was gratifying and satisfying to read, and I look forward to her next work.On the Arm of a Player Overview

The Ring: The Last Knight Templar's Inheritance ReviewThe plot idea for this book is a good one. The beautifully designed cover and the blurb "the Last Knight's Templar's Inheritance" drew me in and I was ready for a hopefully well written Templar Treasure adventure. Wrong. Although the story idea was good, it unfortunately was not well executed. Parts of the story were written very well, other parts were written so poorly that I kept thinking throughout the book that it seemed like it was written by two authors. I have to also say that an awful lot of the story was very predictable which ruins the wish to keep plodding along. The issue I have the most complaint about is that the characters are so lame. Three main characters make up the story, three friends from childhood who inherit a legacy and are thrust into a thrilling hunt for the lost treasure of the Templar Knights. These three people have got to be the most immature young people I have ever come across. The dialog between them was so bad, the integrity of the main character of Christina was appalling, and there never was any deep character development for any of them. I cant say I liked one character in this book, they were simply shallow, sarcastic, and all had schizophrenic personalities that changed like chameleons. I would loved to have seen a more seasoned writer pen this same story. This author in my eyes is not accomplished or polished and it really came through clearly to ruin the story. I barely could finish it, many times I almost put it down, and in my eyes, the ending was simply not worth the overly long journey. Give this a big miss. In fact at this moment, for a very new book that was just released, I found it telling that there were so many many copies of it used for just a dollar or two. I guess no one wants to keep it.The Ring: The Last Knight Templar's Inheritance Overview

Bells, Rings, & Angels' Wings (Harlequin American Romance, No. 707) ReviewFrom back of book:
Humbug!
Libby Banes wished Christmas would go away--along with her husband, Tyler. But would Santa answer a wish from Willow Hills, Indiana, population 400?
Suddenly darkness fell, snow swirled and Libby could barely find her way home. But strangers answered her bell...and elsewhere family hung stockings without her. Then she saw Tyler under the mistletoe with another woman!
How could Libby make them believe who she was, and get her life--and her husband--back in time for Christmas?
******
This was a great book. Deeper than most Harlequin novels. I highly recommend it for a good feeling during the holidays!Bells, Rings, & Angels' Wings (Harlequin American Romance, No. 707) Overview

Five Gold Rings: A Royal Wedding Souvenir Album from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II ReviewThere's something irrepressible about a wedding of royalty. Even the most jaded of us is capable of maybe an 'awww' or two as we get to see a bit of a fairy tale come to life. There is pomp everywhere, from the fabulous gown and jewels that the bride is wearing, the wedding cakes and favours, to public displays of the wedding gifts.
This handsome little souvenir album is to commemorate an upcoming wedding anniversary -- that of England's Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who will have been married for sixty years, in November 2007. It is also a look at how Royal weddings have changed and evolved from fairly private ceremonies that were witnessed by close family members and courtiers, to now what is a spectacle watched by millions on the television and launching a flurry of books, magazines and various souvenirs from the pleasant to the grossly tacky.
The five weddings themselves occur in a period of time that spans just over a century, from 1840 to 1947, with the criteria that either the bride or groom would be a monarch of the United Kingdom.
The first wedding is that between Queen Victoria and her cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, in 1840. Victoria had been Queen of Great Britain for two years when her wedding was celebrated, and public curiosity was intense as to who she would choose to be her consort. With the rise of new printing techniques, there were now ways that the public could observe, albeit from a distance -- there were special prints and panoramas that were printed to feed the curiosity about the event.
About twenty years later, the next royal wedding occured, this time between Victoria and Albert's eldest son, Bertie, the Prince of Wales and the future Edward VII, and his fiancee, Princess Alexandra of Denmark, 1863. Now there was the art of photography to add to the documents; some of these were hand-tinted to create a nearly painting like quality. The gifts were also more opulent, and this time, were described in a special magazine that supplied all of the details from what the guests were wearing to engravings that showed various aspects of the wedding service itself.
Thirty years later, another wedding occured, this time between Bertie's son, George, Duke of York, and his cousin, Princess Mary of Teck, in 1894. This time, celebrations and public notice were high, with various royalties from around Europe visiting to pay their respects. The gifts were put on public display this time, and admission was charged, with the proceeds going to a charity. The bride's trousseau was described in various ladies magazines in lavish detail and illustrations.
The fourth wedding was that of George VI and Queen Mary's second son, Albert, Duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923. No one really expected them to become sovereigns of Great Britain, and so the celebrations were not quite as extravagant as might be expected. But one notable addition was that this was the first royal wedding to be filmed, and soon there would be opportunity for anyone to see it, all for the price of a ticket to the cinema, and sitting through a newsreel.
The fifth wedding was in 1947, with that of two of Queen Victoria's great-great-grandchildren -- Princess Elizabeth, and Prince Philip of Greece. After the dreary years of WWII, and the troubles of rebuilding, London was ready for a celebration. The outpouring from the public was immense, and it seems that all of England took the day off for a holiday. The marriage proved to be one of the most successful in the royal family, and appears to be still quite solid after nearly sixty years.
Each wedding goes into some detail about the clothing, providing pictures and closeups of the brides' gowns, showing some of the intricate sewing and decoration that went into the making. As was traditional, all of the clothing worn were made from British materials and designers. What I found especially beautiful were the samples of lace and embroidery, often with monograms and special designs incorporated into the designs. A very brief history of the couple is also included, talking a little about their childhoods, and what happened after the weddings. At the end of the book, there is also a listing of what music was performed at each wedding, with a few surprises tucked in.
What may surprise you is what you will not find in this book. There isn't any mention of Lady Diana, or of the notorious wedding of Edward VIII and Mrs. Simpson.
For anyone interested in royalty, and how what started as a private celebration soon became an opportunity for public celebration, this is a lovely, well-made and designed book. The photographs and pictures are unusual, many of which I had not seen before, and gave a sense of intimacy.
The author, Jane Roberts, is the Royal Librarian, and has compiled a beautiful little volume on the lore of royal weddings. For anyone interested in the English monarchy, it would be a nice addition to their collection.
Five stars. Recommended.Five Gold Rings: A Royal Wedding Souvenir Album from Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II Overview

One Golden Ring ReviewLady Fiona Hollingsworth needs twenty-five thousand pounds quickly to free her brother, Randy, who has been abducted by Spanish bandits in The Peninsula. However, the family fortune is depleted. When she sees Mr. Nicholas "Nick" Birmingham, the richest stockbroker in England, she gets an idea. The very next day, Fiona goes to Nick's office and offers to marry him in exchange for his help. It is fairly well known that Nick's deceased father had always hoped his son would make an aristocratic match. Even though Nick does not believe himself worthy of Fiona, he agrees. It does not take the pair long to fall totally in love with each other.
Lord Edward Warwick, the Foreign Secretary, had grown up unofficially betrothed to Fiona. Yet last year he jilted Fiona to marry another, Countess Maggie. The Crown needs the help of Nick, his brother (William), and his money. Edward goes to Nick, hoping Nick's patriotism will force his agreement. It does, but only because William has experience in stealthy dealings. If not for his loyalty to his country, Nick would have refused. Nick could not help being jealous that Fiona had once loved Edward for so long.
Fiona has truly gotten over Edward. She is deeply in love with Nick. She is even growing to adore Nick's illegitimate, eight-year-old daughter, Emmie. But she is jealous that Nick keeps disappearing at night and fears he is going to another woman. In addition to this, it is no secret that Randy frowns upon Fiona marrying so beneath their station. Yet Randy may soon be forced to eat crow.
***** You say that you want dreamy romance? Then pick up a copy of "One Golden Ring". This has got to be the most PERFECT Regency Romance that I have read this year. I actually found myself envying Fiona. You will not find any stupid characters that you will want to strangle. These characters are intelligent and realistic. I have high hopes that a couple of the secondary characters will get their own stories told someday soon. *****

Almost Perfect (Silhouette Special Edition; Reader's Ring) ReviewDr. Maggie Templeton was a top notch Boston pediatrician until her husband left her for one of her partners in her practice. Now Maggie just wants to get away from Boston so she's accepted a new position with a very prestigious California practice. As one of her last duties in Boston, Maggie must attend a gala for a new pediatric ICU unit that she was instrumental in establishing. Maggie's ex and his new wife will also attend the gala. Maggie needs all the support she can get to make it through the evening so she calls her childhood best friend Jake Meredith. Maggie's grandmother used to send Maggie to a dude ranch, which was owned by Jake's uncle every summer so she could get away from an alcoholic stepfather. Jake lived with his uncle after his alcoholic father committed suicide.
Jake recently became the guardian of his sister's two children and the dude ranch. Jake knows very little about children but he has a very good housekeeper to take care of them so when Maggie calls, he agrees to go to Boston. Although they have kept in touch by phone for years, Jake and Maggie have not actually seen each other since high school. When Jake gets off the plane in Boston each is amazed at how well the other grew up. After the gala, Jake gets an emergency call from his housekeeper's daughter that her mother had to have gallbladder surgery and will need to be off work for six weeks. With eight weeks between the end of her position in Boston and the start of her position in California, Maggie agrees to help Jake with the kids.
It's not long before Maggie falls in love with the children. She is also determined to teach Jake how to be a good father to the children after she's gone. Jake and Maggie also soon have trouble fighting their growing attraction for each other as well. They both carry a lot of baggage from their childhood that they have to work through.
The story is compelling and the primary characters are very well written. There are also some great secondary characters.Almost Perfect (Silhouette Special Edition; Reader's Ring) Overview

With This Ring ReviewOn one hand, it definitely was a page turner. I was hooked to the characters and the story flowed very well. I felt what the characters felt; the good, the bad, and the ugly.
On the other hand, I don't know if I liked the ending. There were some loose ends that I wish had been tied up, but I don't want to put any spoilers.
I would recommend this book because, even after hours after putting my Kindle down, I'm still thinking about Amy, Sam, and Justin and I think that is a good sign that the author did her job in making the characters feel real.
Side note- I also read her book Betting on Love, and I enjoyed it was well. I can see myself reading more of her books in the future. With This Ring OverviewA Love for All Time . . .They came from different worlds. With This Ring: Something Old/Something New/Something Borrowed/Something Blue (HeartQuest Anthology) ReviewTying these four wedding stories together is the old bridal saying: "Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue..." I especially enjoyed Dianna Crawford's story about a young Jewish immigrant's arranged marriage to a San Francisco businessman's Christian son. I fell in love with the characters, especially the gifted and spunky heroine, who learns about Yeshua from her at-first-unwanted fiance. Also, Catherine Palmer's story about a young Scandinavian woman with an infant, who arrives in Louisiana to find her husband dead, tugged my heartstrings. How she learns to trust God and give up her memories of her homeland as she falls in love with the exuberant Cajun hero makes for an engrossing and delightful story. I highly recommend this book! With This Ring: Something Old/Something New/Something Borrowed/Something Blue (HeartQuest Anthology) Overview

Keeper of the Rings (Futuristic Romance) ReviewThere are many mysteries in the Keeper of the Rings just waiting to be unveiled. Nancy Cane did a marvalous job of creating her fictional world. One of my favorites scenes involled something that I can only compare to a cross between Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and the last scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Keeper of the Rings is an edge of the seat ride as Leena and Tauring undercover a treasonist operation that is in directly leading back to Tauring himself. There are many secrets in Taurin's past that are slowly fed to the reader until nearly the last chapters. Questions may taunt the reader...like Why does Taurin cover his head when it gets darker? Where is Yllon? and what are the signifacants of the rings that circle Taurin's arm? The novel is well worth the read, so pick it out and settle back you are infore a ride you won't soon forget!!Keeper of the Rings (Futuristic Romance) Overview

A Gift of Love : Double Exposure / Just Curious / Gabriel's Angel / Yuletide Treasure / Five Golden Rings ReviewI normally don't care for anthologies, for two principal reasons. First, many stories in these anthologies suffer from being over-short; the usual 70 - 100 pages is simply not sufficient to develop the storyline in a sufficiently satisfying manner. Second, there is always at least one story in each collection which is disappointing and lets the others down.
However, I saw this book in, of all places, a bookshop in Manchester (yes, in the UK). An import, at a very reasonable price, so I decided to give it a try. And I'm delighted I did, having had several days of very satisfying reading from five authors, none of whose work I had read before.
These stories all have a strong Christmas theme, which is done properly, in sharp contract to many Christmas-themed books these days in which the festive season gets perhaps a couple of lines at the end with no other mentions anywhere in the book. Each story in this anthology *feels* Christmassy, in different ways. And yet each story is very different. There are two contemporary romances in US settings, two British historical romances (in the Victorian period, though again each very different), and one time-travel, again set in the US.
We have a modern career woman reunited with the childhood hero who devastated her years ago by a careless act; a still-grieving widow who discovers that the boss of whom she thoroughly disapproves has an incredibly romantic heart; a poverty-stricken young woman finds out how it feels to play the role of angel to a lonely widower and his son; a young Victorian choolmistress enters into an arranged marriage with a reclusive Earl so that his orphaned niece will have a governess, and quickly finds a way to melt his frozen heart; and a 1990s woman is transported back to Pioneer country, finding herself married to the man of her dreams.
I loved each and every one of these short stories. None - well, except perhaps the last, which ended a little abruptly - seemed over-short or insufficiently well developed. And each had its share of humour, angst, romance and heartwarming seasonal cheer.
Highly recommended!A Gift of Love : Double Exposure / Just Curious / Gabriel's Angel / Yuletide Treasure / Five Golden Rings Overview

With This Ring (Regency Romance, Signet) ReviewThis was my first 'short' regency romance and my first Carla Kelly book. I enjoyed it tremendously. The writing is fluid (thank you!), the story is original, and the characters are believable and well-developed. I cried for the soldiers who died. The descriptions of death and disease as a result of war were simple, but so real that you can't help but feel it. But mostly I chuckled and laughed out loud at Lydia's thoughts and actions. And thankfully, Major Sam Reed is no cardboard hero. He is brave and compassionate, but also somewhat of a liar (for certain reasons, he tells his family he married a nonexistant woman named Delightful Saunders and had a nonexistant child with her and talks Lydia into marrying him to save his tail!). I highly recommend this book! Very original. Very well-written. I had almost given up reading romance after some rather excruciating experiences with a hero and his manroot and another hero who was over-sexed to say the least. Well, I'm off to look for her other books! With This Ring (Regency Romance, Signet) Overview

The Talisman Ring ReviewThe Talisman Ring is a marvellous piece of comedy, high drama, farce, romance and wit. If you find Regency drawing-room dramas slow-moving, but enjoy the beautiful writing, and want something to set your pulse racing and your excitement on end - buy The Talisman Ring. If you love mystery, this book is considered by some to be Heyer's masterpiece from her mystery writing career - probably because it is not a mystery in the strict sense of the word. It is a late 18th century story of snowdrifts, misunderstandings, disguises, humour, murder, and stolen rings. The book is very romantic, with one of Heyer's most likeable casts - Eustacie de Vauban, the romantic, strong-willed French refugee, Ludovic, Lord Lavenham, refugee of justice, smuggler and rogue, Miss Thane, as sensible as she is romantic and inventive, and Sir Tristram, one of Heyer's sardonic dark heroes. With Basil Lavenham, the oily dandy, a charming innkeeper, his deaf sister, a couple of bumbling Bow Street Runners, and Hugo Thane, Justice of the Peace, this is a happy, very fast-moving novel full of the sort of corruption that the reader can forgive, and it is just the right length for a beginner. Younger readers, in particular, should thoroughly be recommended to read this book to introduce them to the world of Heyer and its high drama, stylised manners and wonderful language. The Talisman Ring Overview

His Wedding Ring Of Revenge (Harlequin Presents) ReviewThat about sums it up. Now I like an Alpha hero. No really. Strong, straightforward, knows what he wants...and if he's a bit dangerous to know, even better. I bought the book because it didn't seem to be the namby-pamby, politically-correct baby, bride pap we've been fed for years (the reason I turned away from romance). But this goes too far the other way--the man has NO redeeming qualities. NONE.
If he can say things like "You're the bastard daughter of my father's whore." to a 14 yr old, and she STILL wants and loves him, she deserves everything she gets. And all he has to say by way of apology is "I was angry." Despite his horrid verbal and emotional abuse, she loves him because he's beautiful, (he must be--we're told twice on every page), wealthy and is good in bed. How shallow and idiotic is that? I'm sorry, but this book signifies everything BAD about romantic stories from the 80s. Stupid women, brutish men. And it seems to me a little honesty on the part of EITHER character would have saved a lot of pages. In fact, the story would have been over before page three.
As for the writing, it's quite good (except I think "gagging for it" lowers the charcter from hero to scumbag. Given a meatier story, the author might have done well. But story is too thin begin with, and highly padded by pages and pages of excrutiatingly repetitious internal dialogue. Yes, we KNOW he's handsome. Get over it already. It is possible that this author could write a short contemp romance with engaging characters and a good plot. Not this time. His Wedding Ring Of Revenge (Harlequin Presents) Overview

Loving Mariah (The Wedding Ring) (Silhouette Intimate Moments) ReviewI must admit that I was not expecting the kind of story that I got from this book. I was used to reading the romance murder mystery stories by the author Beverly Bird. This story, however, is about family and the differences between two different lifestyles. Adam Wallace has never given up hope that he would one day be reunited with his son, who was kidnaped four years ago by his mother. Adam just never thought that a new lead would bring him to a very strict Amish community. Mariah Fisher seen the picture of Bo, Adam's son, on the back of a milk carton. She was already shunned from the community, so she took the chance and called in with the information on Bo's whereabouts. The happy reunion that Adam pictured with his son was slowly smashed to pieces when Adam realizes that his son not only has a new name, but a new way if life in this Amish community. Adam's pain is real and leaps off the pages. I got to the point where I was angry for Adam and I knew that I could not have reached the same painful decisions that he did. Of course, Adam had the support and care of a woman who was living her own sort of hell, Mariah. This was a very touching story, although I had a hard time with Adam's complete change of heart at the end. Throughout the whole story Adam is clear that he disagrees with a lot of the rules within this Amish community. He also leaves us feeling that he would never be able to live in the community among their rules and way of life. However, at the end Adam has a complete change of heart that was hard for me to swallow. The only thing that really intrigued me about this book was the main theme of a father finding his son after four long painful years and the difficulties that he faces in reestablishing a relationship with him. I have to admit I was not at all interested in the 'Amish storyline'. Almost every negative thing about their way of life is pointed out over and over. I would not rush out to buy this book, but it is an okay read, so do yourself a favor and borrow it from the library.Loving Mariah (The Wedding Ring) (Silhouette Intimate Moments) Overview

And the Bride Wore Plaid (Talisman Ring) ReviewKatherine "Kat" Macdonald is not your typical Regency heroine. She's a little taller than is fashionable, has a "lush" figure, she was born illegitimate and to top it all off she has a slightly checkered past. Because she's been ruined, her half-brother's society friends seem to think she's fair game to be hit on (and pawed at), but like the self-possessed, confident woman she is, Kat has no problem fending off the unwanted advances. And they are very unwanted, because when Kat was ruined she had her heartbroken by an unscrupulous rogue.
Devon St. John has ventured into Scotland to visit a friend--and also to outrun an enchanted family ring that "dooms" the holder to find their spouse. He didn't outrun the ring, his recently married brother planted it on his person before he ran away. When he discovers it, he decides the best way to avoid the "curse" of the ring is to distract himself with a decidedly ineligible woman--and his friend Malcolm's sister, Kat, seems to fit the bill perfectly.
"And the Bride Wore Plaid" is an upbeat style Regency historical, although it's a little less funny than it could have been and comes off mostly as light-hearted. I like that Devon is instantly attracted to Kat for her slightly larger-than-life looks, and their chemistry is great. The story drags a bit until Kat gets a little competition for Devon in the form of her brother's extremely beautiful sister-in-law. There's also a nice subplot involving some marital strife between Malcolm and his wife. Kat is a fairly likeable character. Devon is likeable too, although he is a little elusive; I'm never sure that I really have a bead on him and his motivations.
I only have two major problems with this book.
First, there's an irksome attempt at a fairy tale angle (which is thankfully not terribly overused) with Kat having a "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" thing going on. All of her giant "dwarves" are unnecessary and pointless; there are plenty of secondary characters without them.
My other problem is with Kat's "past". I can't say "And the Bride Wore Plaid" is the first book that I've been bothered by something like this, but it's the first I've reviewed where it came up so I'm going to go into it. I will say that the fact that Kat is not a virgin is integral to the plot; it's pretty safe to say that Devon wouldn't have been interested in her if she hadn't had a little experience. Here's what bugs me: why do women who've had extra-marital sexual experiences always have to regret them in historical romances? I'm at the point that I'd rather an author not write about experienced women if they're always going to have either had a bad sexual experience, or a good one that they enjoyed at the time but then greatly regretted. If a heroine is going to defy the dictates of her society and willingly have sex before she's married, can't she do it for a good enough reason that it wasn't a mistake? I'd like to think that most real women who had have affairs before marriage in those days did so because they truly wanted to and felt it was worth it. Obviously there would be some who regretted it, but I tend to think there would be a higher percentage of women who didn't. Okay, I'm done with that little rant.
In the end, this book is readable, but also nothing terribly exciting, so it gets three stars. I've read the rest of the books in this series about the St. John ring, but can't really say there's one I'd recommend more than "And the Bride Wore Plaid". If you liked any of the others in the series, or if you're already a Karen Hawkins fan, you'll probably like this book.
Sidenote: If you're a big Julia Quinn fan and you haven't read any Karen Hawkins yet, you should do so immediately. I don't know anyone who loves one of those authors without loving the other. Just so you know. And the Bride Wore Plaid (Talisman Ring) Overview
Devon St John has never had a problem in his life—until now. Born to wealth and privilege, surrounded by a warm and loving family, he has pursued a life of leisure, chasing the most beautiful women London has to offer. All told, he has the perfect life and no intentions of ever settling down in any shape, form or fashion. So resolved, he heads to his friend's Scottish castle, unaware that fate is already hard at work.

As the illegitimate half-sister to Viscount Strathmore, Melody Macdonald refuses to reside under his roof and instead lives in a thatched house on the edge of the forest that borders Strathmore Castle. Ever since she ran off at the tender age of twelve to become an apprentice to a master of stained glass, Melody has been deplorably independent and wild. When Devon arrives at Strathmore Castle, he is taken aback by the rude, overbearing, illegitimate Scotswoman who refuses even to pretend to possess any feminine wiles. Ring of Lies (Jewel of the Night) ReviewThis book boasts a multitude of interesting ingredients: two engaging characters who are perfectly matched, a priceless gem, several sinister bad-guys and a phenomenally cranky cat -- all in all, a great combination that makes for a very entertaining read. A fast-moving adventure plot, this story still manages to incorporate a heartfelt and honest love story.
When Ivy Michaels is called away from putting the finishing touches on her new restaurant to deal with the murder of her Aunt Fey, she finds herself embroiled in a mystery over two decades in the making. A safety deposit box key in her aunt's overturned, vandalized apartment leads Ivy to an envelope containing a collection of seemingly random receipts and some family jewelry -- and apparently leads the same men who ransacked her Aunt's apartment to Ivy. She turns to security specialist Dominic Riordan to keep any further intruders out. The attraction between them is immediate and unmistakable and, just this once, it looks like Ivy's luck with men might have changed.
But Dom has plenty of secrets of his own, and he knows far more about Ivy's new ring than he is willing to share. When it becomes apparent that the men who want the ring back are willing to kill for it, Dom and Ivy have to work together to uncover a long-cold murder and a cover-up that will have irreparable repercussions for them both.
Even though she has her fair share of flaws, Ivy is a very likeable character. She is warm and friendly without being helpless, and strong enough to be Dom's equal, both in fighting off bad guys and in their relationship. Her childhood with her aunt left her with a number of hang-ups about men, which become blatantly evident as her feelings toward Dom grow, and which slowed down the story a bit, but she has the courage to overcome them, and the bravery to do what is right, for her and for Dom.
After meeting Ivy's cat, it isn't surprising that she was attracted to Dom. Sergeant Pepper bites, and is generally dreadful to everyone but Ivy, with whom he is a big, loyal, fluffy furball.
When we first meet Dom, he comes across as bitter, arrogant and very, very angry, mostly with Ivy's godfather, congressional candidate James Brogan. Thinking that Ivy's relationship with Brogan is of a much more romantic nature, his intentions towards her begin as far more mercenary than romantic, especially when he sees her new ring and thinks she is involved in a crime he has tried to years to crack. It is only later in the story that it is revealed that he became a cop to solve his mother's murder, and that Ivy's godfather was responsible for getting him kicked off the force before he could do so. So, while his hostility and distrust are understandable, it took me a while to warm up to him.
Ivy is a perfect foil for him, however, and brings out his better nature from the very first. As his attraction for her moved from the physical to the personal, it became easier to see what drew Ivy to him and why she is willing to fight for, and alongside, him.
There is very little "mystery" in this mystery story. The answers to the main questions surrounding the ring are obvious to the reader long before they are to the characters, which makes for a frustrating read at times, especially when the identity of the villain lurking in the shadows is revealed in the first third of the book. It felt rather like, in order to get to the action, some of the opening scenes were glossed over, which made for some confusion, but not enough to spoil my enjoyment.
The book has the feel of a hard-boiled detective novel, with Ivy as an admirably competent damsel-in-distress and Dom as her hard-boiled detective heartthrob. The dastardly exploits that caused Ivy and Dom such trauma are neatly solved and their own relationship resolves a little quickly, but the excellent characterization and great sense of place make up for any structure problems the story may have. One can only say they put their crime-fighting talents to use, as it would be great to read about their future adventures!
