Second Grade Technology: 32 Lessons Every Second Grader Can Accomplish on a Computer ReviewThere aren't many tech curriculums out there, but this one beats all I've seen. I use it for K-5 (I could write this review about any of them) and it was easy to follow, each lesson built on the prior ones so students never felt confused or lost. Most tie in with classroom units which is important to me. They support national ISTE standards so I know I'm teaching my students what they need to know about tech. And, there are lots of extras in the K-2 books such as hints on teaching keyboarding, wall charts, explanations for Web 2.0 and more (check the extra pictures at the top--you'll see some of them). I think this is especially good for new teachers looking for a map, but also for more established teachers who just want to be sure they've covered everything. Mapping the World by Heart ReviewOur school has been using David Smith's "Mapping the World by Heart" curriculum for three years. My fourth grade class studies US History, and I have adapted the curriculum so that my class maps the United States by heart. Our sixth grade, for their last project before graduation, maps the world by heart. This is truly a wonderful project that challenges even the most gifted students, yet also gives different students a chance to shine in the classroom. Every year students, faculty, and parents come to the final dispay of our maps and exclaim, "There is no way that I could do this!" Imagine the pride that a ten or twelve-year-old feels when they have acquired knowledge that their parents find astounding. Many parents have framed their children's USA and world maps and have put them up in the home as artwork! The curriculum is broken down into mini-lessons and is very easy to follow. Even if you did not want to use the entire curriculum, there are plenty of good geography resources and lessons included. In my opinion, every student in the United States should be required to use this curriculum. It is truly incredible what geography our students know when they leave our school!Mapping the World by Heart Overview

I bought second grade and fourth grade in the series and found out it makes a huge difference having a curriculum to use when you're teaching tech. No more wondering how much to push keyboarding or when to start MS Word. It worked so well last year, I'm buying the fourth grade book. I plan to add a book a year. Fourth Grade Technology: 32 Lessons Every Fourth Grader Can Accomplish on a Computer ReviewI'm a very careful buyer so I spent a lot of time on the Look Inside feature of this book, and then on the Scribd version (you get different pages over there). It delivers exactly as promised. Not only are there a year's worth of technology lessons integrated into classroom units, using software like PowerPoint, Excel, MS Word, Google Earth, email, internet skills, there are also over a hundred safe internet sites for fourth graders--organized by topic, over twenty common tech problems that students and adults can solve by themselves, samples of lesson, reproducibles and even homework if you're a lab teacher. All I needed was the software.
As you might expect, because of the breadth of topics, there aren't step-by-step lessons, so if you're looking for that, you'll need to spend a lot more on about fourteen software-specific books. If you have computer basics, you'll be fine.

Its extensive use of subtle transitions between anecdotal stories and factual evidence truely makes the reader feel as if he's no longer living in the 21st century, but rather, has entered into an entirely new world of the Industrial Revolution. However, the book fails to describe fully certain key elements inherent to the Industrial Revolution. In this book you will learn all about circles, squares, rectangles, ovals and triangles and their specific qualities. It's very easy once you've seen them, know what they are all about and have seen many examples. You will learn that "A rectangle has four sides and four corners" and that "The corners are right angles." But, when those wacky cats and monkey get out their rulers, smile, wave and really show you what a rectangle is all about, you're going to SNAP! ... understand what one is in a minute and have a smile wider than a monkey's!

For some children the ability to learn basic geometric shapes can be very difficult. This type of book is a real boon to the visual and/or auditory learner; one will benefit from the wonderfully zany illustrations in this book and the other will benefit from the fun and kooky rhymes. By the time a youngster gets through with this book, he or she should be able to identify the elements of five basic geometric shapes and have the ability to compare and contrast one with the other with ease. This is the first "Math Is Categorical" book I've read by Brian Cleary and I'm hooked. I've loved of any of his "Words Are Categorical" had the privilege to meet and highly recommend them to any parent of a reluctant learner.
