A Tolkien Compass: Including J. R. R. Tolkien's Guide to the Names in the Lord of the Rings ReviewPublished in 1975, this is a good collection of essays about Tolkien's fiction given that the essays are ostensibly written by "fans" rather than scholars. A few of the essays are, it must be conceded, naive in style and scope-- like the one which makes the rather obvious claim that the main theme of the Lord of the Rings is that "power corrupts". Quite a few others, however, are quite insightful, particular Charles Huttar's article on "Hell and the City", Robert Plink's analysis of the "Scouring of the Shire" chapter, and Richard West's analysis of the 'interlace' structure of The Lord of the Rings. Also Bonniejean Christiansen's article on the characterological differences between Gollum that were produced by the *major* revisions of the "Riddles in the Dark" chapter of the Hobbit is extremely valuable-- both for what she has to say about Gollum and for the fact that she offers side-by-side quotations from both the first and second editions of that chapter so the reader can see what has changed from one to the other.
Quite surprisingly, these essays aren't nearly as dated as a lot of other Tolkien criticism that came out at the same time or earlier. (The publication of Carpenter's biography of Tolkien in 1977, as well as the posthumous publication of the _Silmarillion_ and then later of Tolkien's letters has rendered a lot of older Tolkien criticism out-of-date or irrelevant). In fact, these essays are just as good and insightful as a lot of Tolkien criticism being written now (in fact, they're better than a lot of it!). The main reason for their continued relevance, I think, is tha they are clearly focused on Tolkien's fictional *texts* as texts that can be analyzed on their own terms. Rather than delving into lots of biographical details, into questions of authorial intention, trying to place The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in the context of _The Silmarillion_, or connecting them to Tolkien's alleged goal of creating a 'mythology for England', these articles focus on specific chapters, images, themes, and structures from The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, this gives them a kind of 'permanence' that other earlier Tolkien criticism has lacked. (Also, I think the emphasis upon Tolkien's texts themselves leads to more insightful analysis than the biographically-oriented authorial-intention-minded criticism that's still dominant among Tolkien criticism). The Early American Industrial Revolution, 1793-1850 (Let Freedom Ring) ReviewThe Early American Industrial Revolution, 1793-1850 (Let Freedom Ring: The New Nation) certainly does not seem like a history book to many of its readers. Its extensive use of subtle transitions between anecdotal stories and factual evidence truely makes the reader feel as if he's no longer living in the 21st century, but rather, has entered into an entirely new world of the Industrial Revolution. However, the book fails to describe fully certain key elements inherent to the Industrial Revolution. I would definately recommend this book to people who are interested in understanding a general concept of how the Industrial Revolution changed the course of American development, rather than those interested in a lenghty, confusing, tangent-bearing book.The Early American Industrial Revolution, 1793-1850 (Let Freedom Ring) Overview

The Lord of the Rings Instrumental Solos ReviewPersonally, I have really enjoyed this piano book. The pieces are meant to be accompaniments for instruments such as trumpet or clarinet, but they contain enough of the melody that they can be enjoyed on their own. "Concerning Hobbits" has to be the highlight of this collection. I have been playing piano for four years and am concidered intermediate to late intermediate, and this is exactly my level. If you are not that advanced, you can pick through the melody line written above the music. There are some very neat pictures in this book too. I would reccomend this selection very highly. (I would have given it 4.5 stars, but you can't give half stars.)The Lord of the Rings Instrumental Solos Overview

The Second World War, Volume 5: Closing the Ring ReviewIt is fortunate for us as readers that Winston Churchill not only had the qualities of a writer, but that he also found the time to put them to such good effect. Many a retired politician has written his personal memoirs-few of them have ever done so quite as completely. In the war, Churchill used secretaries to help him cover the multitude of daily tasks he needed to get through and afterwards, when living at Chartwell, his home in Kent, he kept up the practise of using an amanuensis instead of writing himself. This allowed him to get far more work done, since he could literally do it with his eyes closed. Nevertheless, we may feel sure that the text is his own. Proud man that he surely was, there is little chance that he indulged anyone in much editing. When we see his virtually unedited copy sent from the field from India, the Sudan and South Africa at the end of the last century, we can feel sure that by the 1950s, he was a competent composer of text indeed.
"Closing the Ring" is the story of the climax of the Second World War. Although he refused to admit it, Hitler probably knew deep down what everybody else could see very clearly after Stalingrad. The once mighty armies of the Third Reich were being forced to withdraw; some of the best divisions had by then been so savaged that little remained. Berlin was being mercilessly ground down to rubble by legions of British and American heavy bombers that ended up attacking their targets almost unopposed. It was the time when madness reigned in the Fuhrerbunker and when the Allies could see the fruit of their careful planning starting to ripen. Churchill was at once rewarded by the knowledge that he had been right in thinking America invincible, and at the same time he was sadly aware that an era was passing and the British Empire was fading away in front of his eyes.
This is a long sustained narrative, written by a man in full command of his enormous personal resources. In addition, Churchill had access to a vast quantity of documentation concerning the period, because he had written much of that too! Frankly, this is an admirable work of history, told with a writer's gift for spinning a yarn and I enjoyed every word of it.The Second World War, Volume 5: Closing the Ring Overview

The Lord of the Rings for Easy Piano Review"Easy" is a hard word. I'm just coming back to the keyboard after 30+ years away and I can't say what level of player I was when I left (past Fur Elise; stalled on the Moonlight Sonata). Have been buying a host of popular music for "easy" piano and it varies. Some is so simplified I have it down on the third time through; others send me to the flash cards to learn what those off-staff notes are. LOTR is right in the middle of the range.
--A few songs from each of the three movies. In Dreams and Concerning Hobbits are the ones I'm learning first; will go back to the DVD and listen differently to decide which of the remaining songs I liked enough to want to learn.
--For the most part, no more than four notes in play at any one time, and a lot places where the music is one note, each hand. A smattering of 16th notes but mostly quarters, some eighths, and half notes.
--Easy key signatures; mostly C and the rest two sharps or two flats max.
--Lots and lots of 12-note arpeggios without a lot of fingering assistance in the left hand.
--Notes range two octaves above and below middle C.
In sum? There are enough notes on each page that the song sounds good, yet easy enough to recognize the tune on the first or second time through. Plan: master this book, then buy the individual movie scores one at a time as I get better and want a richer sound.The Lord of the Rings for Easy Piano Overview

Lord of the Rings Instrumental Solos: Flute (Book & CD) (The Lord of the Rings; the Motion Picture Trilogy) ReviewI was completely impressed with the Lord of the Rings Instrumental Solos for flute.
I have been playing flute for about two years now after taking music classes both inside school and outside for additional advice. I was able to master this beautiful instrument in no time. And I hope to keep up my talent for it.
Now, the features you will expect of this book are:
- 12 featured pieces from each of the three films. These are "The Prophecy", "in Dreams", "Concerning Hobbits", "Many Meetings", "The Black Rider", "Gollum's Song", "Rohan", "Even Star", "Forth Eorlingas", "Into the West", "Steward of Gondor", and the great "Minas Tirith".
- Each piece ranges from at least one page to two; however repeats, rests, and Codas may make the piece longer.
- The book contains full sized pictures of screenshots from the movie.
- A level of playing that is challenging enough for a person of nearly any level.
- Well organized pieces that are easy to understand and read.
- A flute fingering chart at the back to make sure you are able to look up every note.
- A wonderful CD to listen to with full orchestral backup or to play along with. In my case, the demos on my CD feature a professional flutist who plays each piece. When you wish to know the tempo and speed of each piece, this really improves the experience. In fact, the CD is amazing enough to be sold as a sound track for the films by itself.
- This book is available for Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Horn in F, and Trombone. This means that if any concert bands are interested in playing familiar Lord of the Rings music, the pieces will always be in key for each instrument.
In my opinion, this amazing book has completely brought me on to a new level of playing. If any of you are musicians, reading this, you know the feeling you get when you create such a soul-full, emotional piece of music that your mind and audience is touched by every note that weave themselves through each melody? This is what I felt during getting to know each piece in this book.

Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring ReviewAs the title above indicates, I'm a collector of books set in Revolutionary America as well as the author of a frontier novel. I usually take my time reading a book because I like to savor it as I read. However, much to my wifes surprise, I finished the book in only a few days. I enjoyed the book so much that I wanted to keep on reading when I usually would have paused. The book reads like a novel and Mr. Rose has a unique talent for being able to transport the reader to the time of the revolution and put an entire conflict into perspective. He did a terrific job of capturing the pace of life, which can be a difficult thing to do with the written word. I have literally read over a thousand books on the revolution, and this book is in my top 5. Best of all the book can be trusted to be true to history and is not an attempt at revisionism.
