Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book (Five -5- Ring Binder) ReviewYou need a basic cookbook. This is it.
No frills. No essays about the enduring history of kumquats, and how they saved Milwaukee 1,000 years ago. None of that. Just a cookbook with lots of helpful tips, to be used by ordinary people.
What do you get? A good old fashioned cookbook filled recipes you'll actually use, with ingredients you've seen before.
From this cookbook, I've made yeast donuts, breads, BBQ ribs, various sauces, and more. My copy has a few stains on it; good eating makes small messes. I like to think of the stains as battle scars.
Buy if you can the ring-bound version, as it will nicely open as you cook. I have the paperback edition, and use a bag of sugar to keep it open (place the sugar at the top of the open spine).
Helpfully included are photos of meat cuts, so you know pork ribs from beef ribs. There is a similar chart of grains and pastas.
Also, there are general instructions for preparing fruit-pie fillings, methods for cooking meat, and how to can produce. There's shopping tips, nutritional charts, measuring techniques.
Ever wonder the difference between cubing and dicing is? That, and many more great tips are explained here.
I fully recommend "Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book" for any basic kitchen cooking need you have. However, I am sorry, but detailed kumquat information will need to be found elsewhere.

The America's Test Kitchen Family Cookbook 3rd Edition: Cookware Rating Edition ReviewI enjoy the PBS series "America's Test Kitchen," so when I received this book as a Christmas gift last year I was very excited. Now, almost a year later, I have cooked my way through scores of the recipes in this cookbook and there is not a dud in the bunch. This book takes basic, American fare and boil it down to it's most essential (and flavorful parts), allowing you to cook tasty favorites. My only caveat is that is you are looking for quick meals, this may not be the best choice--many of the recipes are quite time consuming. Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book, 15th Edition (Better Homes & Gardens Plaid) ReviewThe 15th edition is not as friendly, easy to read, or informative as the 14th edition. The previous edition had more complete information, friendlier and more "comfort food recipes, and the print did not fade into the photo backgrounds as this edition does. Some of the basics (Macaroni Salad, German Potato Salad, Lollipops,Divinity, etc.) were replaced by more global concoctions (Ginger-spiced Cucumbers, Beet and Apple Salad, Curried Wild Rice Salad, etc.). The Taste of Home Cookbook: Cooks Who Care Edition ReviewI bought this as a gift for a bachelor friend that is a little wary about cooking actual meals. I've made some dishes from it and have made my own recipes based off some of the included recipes. I think it does a great job of keeping the ingredient list to easily found grocery items. The tags separating the sections is helpful to getting to what sort of meal you want. The ingredient index is also really helpful for finding a recipe that will use up that leftover ground turkey, or whatever else you have sitting in your fridge. My bachelor friend is still a bit intimidated by the recipes, always saying he doesn't have all the ingredients, and that he doesn't have awesome cooking skills, but I'm sure I'll make him come around to using it.
The downsides - like most cookbooks (maybe all) it doesn't have every single basic recipe in it. There also is not any nutritional information for the recipes.
Upsides - Handy splashguard to keep the page clean while you're cooking up a storm. Free issues of the Taste of Home magazine with the purchase (opt out of the subscription when the time comes.) Taste of Home Baking, All NEW Edition: 725+ Recipes & Variations from Classics to Best Loved ReviewI received my Taste of Home baking book and couldn't wait to start baking from it- see my picture under customer images for the Beautiful Swiss beer bread I made, it was delicious. The recipes include both sweet and savory, everything from two ingredients (palmier) to a bit more complicated like the apricot filled bread that needs to be started the night before, everything in between, and all baking levels.
Some very good and helpful parts of the cookbook are the equivalent chart, substitutions chart, and the first chapter on baking basics. Baking basics needs to be read first, so you know what flour, salt, etc they use, and what they mean by different words like the difference between stiff peaks and soft peaks.
With taste of home one isn't getting recipes that take four days to make, fifteen pages of techniques, and a bunch of one use only baking equipment. The ingredients are easy to find, most people will have 75% in their fridge and pantry already and the rest can easily be picked up in almost any market.
The book is pretty to look out, has a ton of pictures showing the end results, there are tips galore, at the beginning, end, and scattered throughout the recipes.
I usually don't like spiral books but with over 700 recipes it almost needs to be, or trying to lay the book out would cause spine damage. One very slick feature (shown on my video) are the page protectors included. Seriously, this is brilliant and should set the standard for all notebook type cookbooks.
Included is a year's subscription to Taste of Home magazine.
But it's all about how the food turns out. I try never to post a cookbook review until I've made several recipes, because books can look great and then I find out the directions are actually confusing or their are editing mistakes or the food just doesn't taste good. I spent two days baking (next thing I'm ordering from Amazon is a gel mat!) trying both savory and sweet. The beer cheese bread was delicious. I am usually disappointed in cheese breads because they aren't very cheesy. Taste of Home solves that issue by using a combination of cheese chunks and shredded cheese, so the flavor is all through the bread from the shredded cheese, while bursts of small cheese cubes hit our mouths. Although the recipe calls for swiss I bet this would be great with cheddar.
The walnut bars (page 79) made me laugh because they look so elegant with the glaze and crust, and they were dead easy! Delicious. The Palmier recipe is frozen puff pastry and sugar, but it worked!
I find the timing with my oven at the temperatures they use to be very on point. There do seem to be some gluten free recipes, a chapter on almost homemade that make use of mixes, a lighter chapter that honestly, I'll probably never use. Give me my butter!
Taste of home has produced a very usable and user friendly baking book that would be great for a beginning baker but still has plenty of awesome for more experienced bakers.Taste of Home Baking, All NEW Edition: 725+ Recipes & Variations from Classics to Best Loved Overview

Betty Crocker Cookbook: 1500 Recipes for the Way You Cook Today (Betty Crocker's Cookbook) ReviewReceived the cookbook today and spent the afternoon reading the newest version of the Betty Crocker cookbook. I was very pleased with this newest version of the "Big Red" cookbook as some of the old stand-by recipes were found along with plenty of updated or modern recipes including Chicken Korma or Chicken Tagine. You will also find some familiar comfort foods such as Chicken Pot Pie (with a lighter version recipe included) or Chicken and Dumplings. Beef recipes include Caramelized Beef Pot Roast, Meatballs or Meat Loaf.
There are specific chapters dealing with Grilling, Breakfast and Brunch, Slow Cooker, Vegetarian and a chapter offering recipes that can be prepared within 20 minutes or less.
With each chapter there are detailed photos showing select food products comparing what the food item was supposed to look like and with a photo of a food product prepared wrong. Even after cooking for over 40 years I found this feature very helpful as it never hurts to see how your cooking compares with the cookbook's photos.
Within each chapter there are graphics or photos included offering tips on how to prepare the ingredient in question. For example in the meat section graphics of cow, pig and lamb are used to show where specific cuts of meat are located. Following this information is how to prepare the cuts of meat.
There is a chapter called Do-It-Yourself that gives information on how to can, freeze or prepare food mixes.
Cookbook owners can also access a Betty Crocker web page with more recipes, cooking tips and ideas. Link access information is given in the cookbook.
The book is lavishly illustrated with dozens of color photos showing how the recipes should look once prepared
My only wish for the cookbook was the inclusion of the familiar portrait of Betty Crocker who used to be featured in every full-fledged Betty Crocker cookbook. This cookbook lacks her familiar face. I also wish they would return the familiar and cozy Prize Coffee Cake recipe found in the 1956 version of this cookbook. I also wish the Betty Crocker cookbook would return to the "Key" or "Master" recipe format where a master recipe is given with variations. The really beauty of this format is the ability to including a wide variety of recipes while also teaching the basic techniques of cooking instead of following a recipe.
I highly recommend this cookbook as it does include a wide variety of new and old recipes; lavish photos illustrating the recipes along with numerous cooking tips.Betty Crocker Cookbook: 1500 Recipes for the Way You Cook Today (Betty Crocker's Cookbook) Overview

Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook ReviewI am thrilled that Betty Crocker has re-issued this cookbook. My mother received a copy back in 1956 as a wedding present and it is the one I learned to cook from. I still use it more than any of my other cookbooks. The recipes are just "plain home cooking": no fancy ingredients, no complicated cooking techiques. However, I have never made a dish from this book that has failed to get compliments. It is a good book for beginners as well as the rest of us whose skills fall somewhere between "burns water" and cordon bleu.Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook Overview

Betty Crocker Cookbook: Everything You Need to Know to Cook Today, New Tenth Edition ReviewI have always had a Betty Crocker cookbook around. It was the first cookbook I took with me when I moved away from home, and it still remains the first book I grab for if I have *any* questions about a recipe I'm making.
The book is great for cooks of all levels. It has a lot of great introductory information - how do you boil an egg? What are the different cuts of meat? It provides a lot of easy recipes that taste delicious and are nutritious as well.
In addition, the book also eases you into many advanced recipes. Looking to cook a Thanksgiving dinner for the relatives? Trying to make a birthday dinner really special? This cookbook has the recipes for you, all easy to understand and with gorgeous photos.
This version is definitely an improvement on previous versions as well. There is information on grilling and vegetarian meals, something lacking in the last versions. They've also added in a number of ethnic dishes that are quite tasty.
