The Ring Went Zing: A Story That Ends With a Kiss ReviewI usually don't like cumulative tales. You know, the ones that keep adding things, and adding things, and adding things... They are most often too long to make effective read alouds and I get tired of reading them just as the kids get tired of listening to them. This one is a standout exception. This is a great length for story time and the action is hilarious from the beginning all the way to the end. There's just so much going on and the story flows so well that the kids don't get tired of listening and I don't find myself hurrying through to the end just to get it over with. The illustrations are busy and engaging. These are some really funny animals and the expressions on their faces tell a lot of the story themselves. With This Ring, I Thee Dread ReviewIn the first couple of chapters I wasn't sure I would like this book. The heroine was a bit of a man-hater and the hero was a bit of a wimp. Obviously their parents agreed with me. They blackmail them into an arranged marriage and an isolated four month honeymoon in a cabin the middle of the Alaskan wilderness with no outside contact. Away from the distractions of modern life, they have a lot of time to think. Through this four month period they learn things about each other and about themselves. Since they are 30 and 27 year old virgins, sex is not a part of the learning process which is refreshing in a romantic novel. By the end of the book they've grown enough that I can like them and they have formed a bond that will last.With This Ring, I Thee Dread Overview

Lyrical and melodious with a splash of whimsy, Adam Rex artfully intensifies the action as one seed grows into a tree full of circus animals...until the elephant shows up. The illustrations are masterful and fun and they incorporate the text flawlessly--yet maintain the circus feel. Not only do the readers see the action corresponding to the text, they also get frames of what happens between the pages, adding dimension to the story.

The Ring of Brightest Angels Around Heaven : A Novella and Stories ReviewI have only recently discovered Rick Moody & in a short period have read almost all of his books - this is my favourite. The stories here are reasonably varied in content, & he has a lot of fun taking liberties with form & style & content (what a story should be). These are not necessarily just straight narratives, but play around with ideas of meaningful coincedence & circles of happenings. It's always good to see a writer unafraid of taking risks in order to get at some sort of truth - it's what great artistry is all about (I think anyway). I too, along with the other person who has written a review, like the stories 'Phrase Book' (the girl who took a massive hit of acid) and 'The Apocalypse of Bob Paisner' (a term paper in which a guy flunking out of school relates his life to the Bible). One thing about Moody, apart from everything else, is that his characters here are always wholly believeable. Even if the situations are sometimes extreme, the characters ring true - they are created with a great deal of empathy, & if the reaction to them isn't always empathetic, at least it's with understanding. This, to me, is the most important feature. The last story in the book is quite self-revelatory. It's a neat idea - Moody uses a selection of books from his bookshelf as a 'Bibliography' & footnotes occasional ones in order to explain certain parts of his life. I think it takes a person a lot of courage to expose themselves implicitly like this (but it sure beats a publishers blurb on the back cover). Rick Moody is a very good writer & you don't get too much better in contemporary writing than Ring of the Brightest Angels Around Heaven.The Ring of Brightest Angels Around Heaven : A Novella and Stories Overview

With This Ring, I Thee Dread: A Contemporary Romantic Comedy ReviewTypically people aren't forced into marriage in this day very often. But that did happen for Ryan and Elizabeth. Their harsh reality of being forced to marry and live together in the Alaskan wilderness for four months is appalling to both parties. Elizabeth hates Ryan for his behavior during grade school. Ryan hates Elizabeth for her coldness toward him. Both learn that there were other forces at work in their relationships and their hatred is replaced by friendship. Of course, it all works out in the end. It wouldn't be a romance novel if that didn't happen!
The book is a delight to read! It didn't take me long at all to get caught up in the story, eager to see what would happen with every turn of a page. Ruth Ann Nordin brings to light a rare situation where two people who are forced to be together do come around to like and even love one another. Her style is fun and exciting to read! I can't wait to delve into other works by this fun and exciting author!With This Ring, I Thee Dread: A Contemporary Romantic Comedy Overview
